We live about 5 minutes away and they accommodate larger groups and that's ultimately why we come. I would have gladly given this place 3 stars if it weren't for the horrible service we experienced last time we were there. To be fair, I did take into consideration all the times I had been there before and that's the only reason why Eggs Etc didn't receive one star.
Is the food amazing? Not at all, but it certainly is good for what it is. . Typical breakfast fare you'd find at any diner--larger portions with a good mix of regular all-american breakfasts and tex-mex influenced meals.
I usually get something I can throw avocado slices on and the fiance is generally happy with he steak and eggs--for the price and portion size.
Now, onto the horrendous service we received a few weeks back. My fiance and I host a sleepover for his younger cousins a handful of times a year. Tradition calls for a breakfast out together before we call it a day. We got there and waited for a table large enough for 7 people. After being seated, we quickly decided what we wanted and spent the rest of the time chit chatting. After noticing that no one had come to our table since we were seated, my fiance got the attention of an employee who walked past him and asked if we could place our order. At which point, the employee (who turned out to be more like the owner/manager) snapped back, "I'm not a waitress here. And if you want a waitress to come, you should all have your menus closed. She's not going to come if she thinks you're still deciding."
Pure attitude. Yes, half of us had our menus open--but that's beside the point. What kind of dumb code is that? I know that closed menus are an indication we're ready, but at this point, no one had approached our table. Plus, they have a rather large menu some of the kids had it open so they could refer to the item when ordering.
After placing our order, things were pleasant enough. Until I found something odd about my french toast. There was a green spot on the second slice. I didn't want to say anything, but his cousin caught me staring at it and asked me if it was mold--the exact same thing I was thinking myself.
I fidgeted around with it thinking it could be a food item that would have come from the grill. Whatever it was, it was in my bread and there was nothing to pry off. I get the attention of my waitress who initially says it's green onion. I use my fork to move the bread around to show her it's in the bread and it wasn't a superficial piece of food.
"Oh my gosh, I'll take care of this right away. I'm sorry," she said and took off with the plate.
She came back about 10 minutes later and said it was a blueberry and she'd take care of it on the bill for me. Mind you, I had only had one piece and we all knew it wasn't a blueberry. It's green for one, and two the was no actual piece of food. The bread piece was green.
Bill comes and she charges me for the french toast. We remind her of the mold, at which point she says it was a blueberry in the end, so it wasn't bad. Ugh, if that's the case, I'm not paying for a dish I didn't eat or one you didn't bother to replace after whisking it away. And either way, I told her we both knew it wasn't a blueberry or she wouldn't have shockingly whisked my dish away.
Waitress: "So you don't want to pay?"
Fiance: "Not for a dish that had mold. And certainly not for something that she didn't even get to eat. You never returned the "safe" food or replaced her meal"
*silent staredown.
W: "Fine" storms off.
Eggs, Etc. You guys are generally okay. But boy, you guys were all a bunch of jerks that day. I mean, you provided service that defies all kinds of logic.
And that's why I probably won't be back. Long beach is not short of breakfast spots--hello Starling Diner, Coffee Cup, Aroma Di Rome, etc--and you were already at the bottom of the barrel.
Oh--and if you go anyway, don't get the biscuits and gravy. It's bland, mushy crap. Gravy from a jar has more flavor. Seriously. read more
