My 1/2 sandwich looked like 1/4 sandwich and my soup was half-filled. This is is ok. I would say the location is nice with two front sides with one facing the main street and one facing the plaza. I would recommend parking in the back, facing the plaza for the parking. I like the comfy red retro home style that brings a great vibe. The sandwiches were not what we expected as we got roast beef with cheddar and creamy Caesar. I was a bit disappointed with the medium/small portions for the price and feel like I could've gotten it at deli delicious. The sandwiches are something you can make better at home, they gave more Caesar sauce than chicken and was in a few bites soggy bread with vegetables. The roast beef was better but with an overwhelming amount of mustard to enjoy which also made the bread soggy upon eating it as soon as we got it. The service was not as welcoming for the look and feel of the location. They were cold and frustrated when I asked questions. It also took 20 minutes for two sandwiches with one being cold and not heated. They were kinder to the regulars but cold to new customers which felt odd and exclusive. I wouldn't recommend this location with soggy bread and slow service. read more

I've never heard of this place before a Google search of sandwich shops near Cal State Long Beach. Quite a few places popped up in the search but I decided on this place based on the menu. My initial intention was to take the sandwich to go but once I saw what a warm and cozy atmosphere it was I opted to eat there. I had the chicken avocado sandwich on wheat bread and it was one of the freshest and tastiest sandwiches I've ever had. Not to mention the customer service was top notch as well. Service was awful, an older lady was making my food & gave me a nasty attitude. All I asked if my food was ready since I had been waiting 20 minutes. She then responds with "I don't want to give you raw food." It shouldn't be raw if I had to wait 20 minutes. Keep in mind, there were only 2 other people inside so it wasn't too busy. read more

This kind woman answered all of my questions and recommended me a beverage with coffee infused ice cubes!! It was extremely delicious and my new favorite coffee by far! The woman helping me didn't seem interested in dealing with me when I asked for an extra small plate or when I asked for the wi-fi password. A friend and I were hoping to get a little bit of work done with our laptops so we sat at one of the four-tops they had. The place didn't seem busy but the same woman asked us to move to a smaller table though in case a bigger party comes along. There were plenty other tables open. We obliged and moves to a tables that was cramped with both our latops. I don't know. About 20 minutes after moving, she came by and apologized for moving us and gave the reason that she thought a big party was coming in... In actuality, I think she peeked over my shoulder and saw me drafting this review. Lol. I'm all about supporting small businesses. But I just didn't feel welcome here. Update: Two years later, I'm still loving this place! I'm even living in North Hollywood now! Homework, exams, and stress keep piling on me lately. I need a place to just relax and enjoy myself. Cafe Lorel is still THE place to go. I'm still surprised every time I go here because three seasonal/new coffee blends change! Of course you can order the previous ones (my favorites are the Black Forest Blended Latte and Funky Monkey [I helped invent this drink back when I was exercising at the time!]). I like to custom order my drinks usually, but I'm just so indecisive! Food's still as comforting as always. Some creamy broccoli cheese soup to go with a tuna melt today, along with an Iced English Toffee Latte. Then to finish it all off, an almond pastry with powdered sugar melted in my mouth with lemon ginger tea. ahhhh... If you happen to be near CSULB or are a student there, support Cafe Lorel!
