On our way to a concert, we decided to stop at Modica's, a place I've visited several times over the years. I ordered ahead, and lucky me--my order was ready for pickup in under 10 minutes. On previous visits, I've sometimes waited closer to 15-20 minutes, so this was a very welcome surprise. I ordered the pastrami sandwich on a roll, and they certainly didn't skimp on the meat. It was generously piled high--exactly how I think a good pastrami sandwich should be served, with so much meat it practically falls out with every bite. The pastrami was flavorful, and the portion was impressive. My husband ordered the beef dip and gave it equally high marks. His sandwich was also generously filled, and he said the beef was delicious. These are seriously substantial sandwiches. We could only manage half of each before the concert, which turned out to be a bonus--the other halves became a very satisfying late-night treat. A true Italian paradise. I got to spend a week learning the ins-and-outs of the downtown LB food scene. Modica's Deli was one of the few places that absolutely blew me away.. yet had me crawling back for more. This Italian deli is dedicated to serving up sammies to locals. Their menu is extensive and includes hot and cold sandwiches, charcuterie, salad, soup, pasta, plus pre-made deli favorites. They also have an extensive list of wine onsite, in case you want to add some oomph to your next business meeting. I ordered the 16" Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Grilled chicken, romaine lettuce, tomato, provolone and mayo. It might sound simple, but this monster of a sandwich was incredibly tasty. We stumbled across this little old-school Italian deli while in Long Beach, and this is exactly the type of place I love finding when traveling. Nothing overly fancy or trendy--just good food, HUGE portions and that neighborhood deli feel. The star of the show was definitely the pastrami sandwich. When they handed me this thing, I was like... WHO is supposed to eat all of this?! The amount of pastrami they pile onto the bread is ridiculous in the best possible way. I added marinara, cheese and jalapeños, and that combination took it to another level. Pastrami with marinara sounded different, but TRUST ME--it works! The marinara gave it that Italian twist and balanced out the richness of all that meat. Their marinara is actually something Modica's specifically prides itself on, so adding it was definitely the move. We also tried one of the cold deli sandwiches, and once again they did NOT skimp on the meat. Everything tasted fresh, the veggies still had a nice crunch, and the sandwich was packed from top to bottom. And then there was the bakery case. I should've just kept walking...but obviously I didn't. The chocolate chip cookie was absolutely MASSIVE--look at the picture compared to my hand! Crispy around the edges, loaded with chocolate chips and definitely big enough for two people. We also grabbed the banana crumb, which was moist, sweet and had that buttery crumb topping all over it. One thing I really appreciated about Modica's is that you actually feel like you're getting your money's worth. I ordered this as takeout recently while in Long Beach, and Modica's delivered on a tasty stuffed sandwich I'd definitely get again. The sandwiches are packed to the brim with meat, cheese, and veggies. The roast beef especially has double to triple the amount I usually expect. Friendly staff. I had the veggie mozzarella sandwich and found it to be ok but not great. The bread was very soft, and I find caprese sandwiches are best with bread that has a bit of crunch to it. The tomatoes were colorless and flavorless. It's a pet peeve of mine when restaurants serve unripe tomatoes, but for a sandwich like this it's even more disappointing. This is one of the only Italian restaurants in DTLB. Broadway Pizza and Buono's are pizza places that are more "Italian restaurant" than you think, but this place is really the only true Italian Restaurant in DTLB. I give it 1 star for the nice owners and family. I give it 1 star for sitting outside on a nice day and enjoying the outside vibe. I give it 1 star for average food. The menu however, has major issues. The bread they use for the garlic bread, the pesto bread, and the pastrami sandwich doesn't hold up. The white part of the bread gets mushy and has a bad texture. That's the case for all hot sandwiches and garlic breads. I recently ordered the chicken parm, and the chicken was cut into small pieces and was burnt. I like my meat cut up in rice dishes such as paella and jambalaya, but cut up chicken parm seems low class and it wasn't great. I also recently ordered the Italian sub. It's a shame you have to pay extra for cheese. IMO, an Italian sub should have both Provolone and Mozzarella cheese. Their sandwich comes with no cheese and is an extra charge. Bummer. Also, they have a variety of Italian-style sandwiches, but none of them have the classic salami, mortadella, and capicola combination which is the authentic combination from my experience. To top it off, the Italian Sub doesn't have red onion or black olives. Meh. There are more menu issues. In the end, there's nothing I find above average. I don't discourage you from going if you're in the mood for a nice Italian meal on the sidewalk outside in nice weather, but there is literally nothing I've found on their large menu that is above average. The menu is flawed in too many ways. At least the family owners seem to be very nice and that goes a long way in deciding who to give my hard earned money to. read more

A local favorite for good reason. Came by with two friends to grab dinner and. let the rain subside. I checked out the meatloaf sub and it was perfect. The soft roll, the hot meatloaf topped with cheese and sauce. Yum. My friends had the lasagna (always good, he always gets that) and the pasta with mushrooms. Two of us purposely left room for the carrot cake which is fabulous with its cream cheese frosting. Not made in house but it's made locally and is to die for. Communication is key. If you do not do any kind of substitutions please just say it. I ordered a sandwich that had three different kinds of meat. I do not like salami so I asked for extra ham instead. The lady politely told me yes and at the same time added a charge for extra meat. I guess she didn't realize I could see the itemized charges on the other side of the register When I saw this, I told her I do not want EXTRA meat. I just want more ham instead of the salami. She asked another lady who was going to make the sandwich and she gave me a total attitude and ended up saying ok. Of course when I get my sandwich there is no salami and nothing in place of it. They even left out the cheese. I also requested NO mayo and she mixed my chopped onion in mayo. I hope you people find your peace in life. Thanks guys. As I lay here in pain with a food baby in my belly in my hotel bed, I must share my experience that I just had at Modica's Deli. Let's jump in, despite my inability to even stand at this moment... Ambiance - You can dine indoors or outdoors. There's room for small and large groups, though the interior is smaller than the outdoor dining area. Food - I'm carrying a food baby, and it's Smokin Joe's! I was hesitant to get a pastrami sandwich that had marinara on it, but it works! I got the 8-inch which was more than enough food. I can't even imagine getting the 16-inch. I also got a piece of cake to-go and holy moly it was a huge slice! I couldn't even get through half of it before having to throw in the towel. The chocolate suicide cake is no joke. Delicious, but bring a few friends if you want to finish it. Service - The guy who I interacted with was very friendly and helpful. Everyone seemed friendly and it was a good vibe overall from the staff. Overall, this was a great, but extremely filling meal. I have no complaints other than I am bed-ridden and can't seem to awake from my food coma. Would highly recommend trying the Smokin Joe's, or one of their other tasty sandwiches! I stopped by this spot with friends while on break for a conference. It is conveniently located near the beach, a significant plus. Despite its extensive menu, there are few vegan options, which is surprising and disappointing for California. However, all of the colleagues who did get to enjoy their food were raving about the food selections that they had. So, based on those recommendations. The food is good quality, especially considering the price. Also, it was impressive how quickly the food came out! There is plenty of seating inside and outside of the restaurant. This place is a must try in Long Beach! I got the spinach tortellini with their homemade pesto sauce - I love their pesto sauce!! Their portions are also very big and it comes with bread for every plate so I always have some to take home. I also got a side of meatball and sausage and everything was so flavorful. You can't beat the price since most of their pasta dishes are under $15. Parking is street parking and metered so might be challenging during weekends but I never had issues. We were STRUGGLING to find a decent, not super expensive nor super lowly rated restaurant near the Long Beach Convention Center that was open for dinner. Thank god for Modica's Restaurant & Deli! In comparison to everything else in the area, super affordable and huge portions too! You can easily order an entree and split it with someone if you're not super hungry. Service was quick and courteous and helpful in answering our questions. We got the: 1) 16" Italian Sausage Sandwich: -It was generously slathered in spicy marinara sauce with cheese on an Italian roll. -Bread was nice, warm, and soft. Sausage had a distinct peppery taste. -It was a ginormous sandwich to be honest and we split it with 2 people and if we had refrigeration or storage at the hotel room, we could have easily taken it back with us instead of scarfing it down there. Way more than enough for 2 portions to be honest. 2) Mediterranean (I think) Dip: -This was on their Happy Hour special menu I believe. -It came with some sundried tomatoes, pesto, grated parmesan, and dip with 8 pieces of garlicky pita chips. -Great appetizer! Oh my goodness, we returned to Long Beach for vacation after many years and were thrilled to see Modica's is still here and thriving. I see it described as a deli, but it is soooooo much more.
