While walking around China town, I came across this stand. They had a few bakery items on display. You order from them in the front as you cannot go inside. They have a window with the items they have and pricing on the wall. I ordered a mini moon cake since it was the occasion. I didn't know what to expect from it. It has a thin soft but firm dough on the outer layer and the inside is a dense texture. Not sure what it was. I got a bag an almond cookies which the attendant said were very good. I agreed! Reminder me of pecan cookies. I also got a sweet and crunchy pastry. I thought they would be like buñuelos but they were very sweet. To much syrup in my opinion. Very friendly guy taking orders. He speaks several languages, even Spanish. They only accept cash and Venmo.

Bakery in SF Chinatown, but you don't go in - you order from outside and they bring your order out to you. Basically a grab and go. I know of this place because the cow ears snack and the egg tarts. This time I got the egg tarts finally, and they were delish. Made for a good snack while walking around Chinatown. The egg tart was a good size and tasted fresh. Crust was flaky and the inside was smooth and rich. Try one if you're in the area.

Dahn taht - $3.00 but so good!

Only tried the dat taht (egg custard tart), but it reminded me of Chinatown in L.A., back in the day. Buttery, flaky crust and rich custard inside. It's $3 a tart, which is definitely more than when I was a kid, but I get it - prices are higher everywhere. Still delish. Almost got the sesame ball with red bean paste (big!) but we were going to eat lunch, so we didn't. Little mom and pop shop with authentic old school feel. The elderly lady reminded me of an auntie. Lol. Whenever I'm in SF, I'll come by.

So sad to post this but Eastern Bakery has gone downhill and keeps on rolling. The only thing that they still have going for them is their coffee crunch cake BUT unfortunately, terrible customer service won't bring me back. Ordered two 8" inch round coffee crunch cakes (a WHOPPING $45 a pop - cash only) and although the taste of the cake is still spot on, they are NOT consistent with the way their cakes look or the attention they give to their cakes. and Ali's ordered one Chinese rice krispy (which generally is shaped in a square but this time it looked like a bunch of leftover pieces that were rolled together in a mashed up ball) and three pieces of their sweetened rice cake (which definitely was not fresh and was hard, when generally its very soft and springy). Called the day after to ask if their Chinese rice krispy was still made in a square and they confirmed it was. When I told them that I picked up two cakes and the other four pieces the day before, and how disappointed I was in the pastries because of the lack of freshness and how terrible they looked, the rude lady who speaks both English and Chinese perfectly, hung up on me! Customer service is definitely not at its finest. No apologies or acknowledgement whatsoever. Last time I'll be a customer and think twice before you become one.

Another amazing place in Sf in Chinatown the eastern bakery dies it great! Their red bean and custard buns were fantastic so flavorful and good and the owner was very friendly and welcoming. Price is ridiculous three or four dollars for each bun with all that flavor Omg. Can't wait to visit again!

Recently read an opinion article on the sesame balls here so I thought I'd give them a try. The author was right. These are one of the best I've had in SF. When nice and hot, they were perfectly chewy and just melts in your mouth. The red bean was also not too over powering like others. At $3 per balls, cash or zelle only with one man manning the shop.

Eastern Bakery is one of those great San Francisco finds. Tucked away in Chinatown, it's easy to walk right past the modest storefront in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. But don't let the unassuming exterior fool you--it's a real hidden gem. There's no indoor seating here; all orders are placed at a small stand by the door. The windows are plastered with handwritten paper signs that serve as the menu. At first glance, it feels a bit overwhelming, but once you dive in, you'll realize it's part of the charm. The real stars are the mooncakes and the coffee crunch cake. I first heard about the cake on Reddit and was curious to try it as an alternative to my usual go-to at Yasukoi Sweet Shop in Japantown. I don't believe this cake is even on the menu plastered on the windows, so you'll have to ask for it blindly. Eastern Bakery's version is sweeter, with little pieces that are slightly burnt. That contrast--the rich sweetness of the cake against the bitter crunch--is surprisingly addictive. Personally, it was just a touch too sweet for me, but still worth the experience.

The filling was me. Not much barbecue seasoning or sauce to it and it's too ground.

So, maybe today was a slow or bad day, but the barbecue pork was extremely disappointing. I came here because I saw a video on Instagram. And we wouldn't come back. The barbecue pork bun was not tasty. It was very big, but that doesn't make it good. The price also seemed high. Definitely not worth waiting in the line.

They only take cash or zelle here :') I was introduced to a new Chinese snack today! It was fried noodles stuck together (rice crispie-style) with some sort of syrup? It was honestly very much up my alley of sweets I like but my only complaint was that the noodles were too oily like they weren't properly drained after frying.

The Eastern Bakery was one of the stops on our walking food tour. It's a very busy spot and quite small. Their moon cakes are delicious, fresh, and homemade. The stressful experience of ordering and paying disappeared once I took the first bite. If you can be patient, you should stop by this bakery.

    Michelle K.

Honestly the egg tarts were really good! They weren't perfect but they were definitely tasty. I think there's a lot of other egg tart bakeries that are a lot fresher. If you're nearby and want a quick bite, then go for it! But if you're able to hunt and dig around for a better spot, I'd probably do that instead :)

    Vans C.

Sure this place is historic - i.e, old and rundown. No entry to the store so you can only point at the tattered, aged tags. I got an ugly egg tart and it tasted like it was sitting for days.

    Jay L.

For fifteen years, I have been visiting Eastern Bakery; it never disappointments! The pastries are dependably fresh, and among the best you will discover are their mooncakes--rich in taste and exactly balanced. The service is polite and quick; the personnel always makes you feel welcome. The shop exudes an old-fashioned, nostalgic appeal that accentuates the experience and transports one back in time. This is the spot to visit if you're searching for real Chinese pastries in a cosy and conventional environment. strongly suggest.

Can you freeze the coffee crunch cake?

Do they deliver (ie: Door Dash)?

Has anyone ordered Mooncakes from them and had them shipped out of state? How was the experience?

Yes from California to Nevada plus I ordered wife cakes as well. They shipped well and were good as expected from Eastern. I shipped to my Mother in Law so if there was a problem I would've heard about it FOR SURE😉

We treated it as an adventure and a price to pay for the best rated pastries in the city. Did it once but not sure if I have the heart to wait 2 hours in a queue. The pastries are top notch though. The pistachio cardamom croissant is the bomb, I would get multiples next time. Their savory pastries are amazing too- got the herby olive twist. The Orange rosemary was super good as well, such an amalgamation of flavors and texture. They were sold out of the Coffee Caramel Pain Au Chocolat and a couple other pastries, so missed those. The bakery doesn't have much space to eat inside, so take them to Washington Square or wherever you are headed and enjoy your hard earned pastries.

I could see the balloon that held all of the anticipated excitement my husband had of showing me a "new" spot (it was new to me) all but heartbreakingly deflate. Sigh. Not wanting that crestfallen look to prevail, I told him we'd try again. A hole in the wall that is takeout only, the customarily drab sunset weather doesn't do the vibe any favors out here. When it's overcast & cold outside, does anyone want cold pineapple buns to go with it? That was my first experience, so I was curious about how the do over was going to go. Night & day... Yelpess with the mostess Cherylynn was spot on when she said the buns need to be warm & eaten asap. This is key to experiencing a stellar treat over a humdrum one. On our 2nd visit they were hot. They were pillowy. They were divine. Gloomy sunset weather? It could be RAINING outside & I wouldn't care right now. It was a total 180. Butter. Do it! I suggest you go for the gold, kerrygold Irish butter. Matcha. I love matcha so it's an automatic order but it's a definite winner. Not too sweet, because matcha isn't naturally sweet. Custard. The Ube filling BAKES INTO the interior & it is amazing! I wished I'd gotten 6 of these. The puffs. How friggin adorable. Just throw in 6 puffs. Or 18. Then dip them in the side of custard that comes with. If you get extra to take home (& you should), all you have to do is be sure to reheat them as per the directions on the box. Just place them on a baking sheet lined with foil, or an oven rack (I've done both, both work), at 325 for around 10 minutes. I think 12-15 minutes is actually ideal. I couldn't believe how soft they were after this. Like new! The next day, after being refrigerated all night! I know weird, but fact! A couple of days later I requested that we go again next Saturday. Like when you were a kid & you couldn't wait for Friday because Friday's were pizza night. Lovingly, they arranged for us to meet up for dinner Friday night. We had discussed with my cousins before visiting them that my wife wanted to check out two renowned bakeries in the Bay Area, Tartine and Arizmendi. My cousin and her husband graciously and kindly offered to drive us around downtown San Francisco Saturday morning to visit these bakeries and we had such a great time on our personalized Bay Area foodie tour narrated by my well-informed cousin-in-law (CIL). Our first stop on this belly stuffing foodie tour was Tartine, which served one of the yummiest almond croissants I've ever eaten. That pastry alone warrants a visit to this highly rated and highly reviewed bakery. Since our CIL was in the know about The City's downtown eateries and bakeries, he recommended that we start out early to visit Tartine because he said that lines to these places could get crazy long. Thankfully for us, we got to Tartine before it opened and were second in line to enter. Tartine is a well chronicled bakery with locations around the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Seoul, Korea. The location we visited is on Guerrero and 18th streets in the Mission District and it's across from Pay And Save Grocery. Parking might be challenging with street and metered parking. As soon as you enter the bakery, there's a hipster and local mom and pop business vibe. You're greeted by glass cases displaying beautiful cakes, pastries, breads, loaves, scones, and cookies. There are stool seats and elevated chairs where you can eat on planks of wood either facing the steady flow of customers or looking outside. I liked how there were paintings hanging from what appeared to be from local artists. The staff were friendly and took care of us pretty quickly. Tartine was our first stop in what would be a fun foodie adventure. Since I always start my day with a cup of coffee, I ordered caramel cappuccino. The foam on top had a beautifully designed heart from the barista, but I like my coffee sweet and after my first sip, I knew I had to add some type of sweetener. I used a lot of their complimentary honey to make it sweeter. My wife, who works in the baking industry, had placed Tartine on her list of places she wanted to visit to experience their scones and pastries. If my wife knew about this bakery, then I knew that I'd be indulging in baked goods of the highest caliber. Of course I let my wife pick what she thought were the best items, but I asked the customer who was the first person in line what Tartine was known for and she said their almond croissants, so when it was our turn to make our selections, I asked for Tartine's Frangipane Croissant, which has almond-cream filling and brandy. Brandy?!!?? Honestly, I don't remember tasting any brandy, but what I do remember was flakiness of the croissant, the thick cut almonds on top, the heartiness of the croissant, and the generous amount of almond-cream filling. It was a beautiful looking pastry and the taste was even better. Seriously, one of the most memorable croissants I've ever eaten. My family and I are blessed to have family willing to take time out of their morning to take us on a guided foodie tour to some iconic bakeries and local eateries. Our first bakery stop was Tartine and after eating that delectable almond croissant, the other bakeries would be hard pressed to beat them.

Our cousins were familiar with both bakeries and graciously volunteered to be our foodie guides as we drove to these two bakeries Saturday morning. After visiting Tartine and B Patisserie, Arizmendi was our final bakery and our last stop on our Bay Area foodie tour. Just like the other two bakeries, Arizmendi was a popular destination, it was different than the other two in the selection of the pastries, and I highly recommend their corn cranberry scone and their cheese focaccia. Arizmendi is also located in the Mission District specifically on Valenica and 24th Street. The bakery is in between a Royal gas station and the KitTea Cat Lounge. Parking consists of street parking and just like the other bakeries, parking could be challenging, but Arizmendi is worth the trouble parking and walking to this confectionary paradise. This bakery is a business where their baked goods are enjoyed at home since there is minimal seating. What's unique about this bakery compared to the other two is how the baked goodies are selected. It is self serve where it's a little hectic trying to maneuver around other customers to pick the pastries and breads you desire. The young black lady behind the register who checked us out was courteous, friendly, and took care of us quickly. As you enter Arizmendi, there are four wooden display cases with plexiglass holding scones, cinnamon rolls, muffins, pies, croissants, focaccia, cookies, and shortbreads. As you peer through the plexiglass to decide what to select, make sure to grab the provided wax to pick up your baked goods and place them in the provided bags. One of our friends asked us to grab scones, so scones were one of the items we knew we were going to purchase. My wife selected other items, but I asked her for a focaccia because my cousin said that Arizmendi was know for their pizza breads. I highly recommend you purchase their corn cranberry scones. These scones are hearty, the cranberry is plentiful, and I really enjoyed these while I was drinking a coffee at home. The focaccia I picked was a cheese focaccia made with poblanos, kale, and queso fresco. That square pizza bread was a savory revelation where I devoured that as snack after heating it in our home toaster oven. It was cheesy, the poblanos and kale were tasty, and I completely agreed with my cousin's assessment about their pizza bread. We're so grateful to our cousins for taking valuable time to serve as our foodie tour guides during our trip to San Francisco. Bay Area denizens are blessed to have three bakeries where they can satisfy their pastry, dessert, and bread cravings. We're fans of Arizmendi's scones and pizza bread.

The only downside is that it's not given to you heated. Eating it cold was not optimal. The banana "tart" because I don't recall the exact name, is to die for! It's sweet, it's sooo good! It's like banana crack. It has caramelized parts to it, and you won't want to share it!! The double backed pistachio/blackberry croissant is a food group all its own. It's everything you want in a pastry! The Thai tea was just OK. Super pricey for the amount. It's not that traditional taste profile. The people that work at Neighbor big house are friendly, expedient with service, and this definitely needs to be on your secret places to try when you're visiting SF. It's not that we want to gatekeep, but you are gonna want all these pastries to yourself!
