Such a cute Hawaiian-owned donut shop in the Ferry Building Marketplace! The staff was super sweet and helped with our flavors: coconut, lilikoi, and ube. Coconut was my favorite. Each donut is about $4.50 and a great light snack.

I love malasadas. What a pleasure to find a California spot for this tasty treat. They offer a variety of sweet fillings in the soft, fluffy fried bread. Get a four pack for a discount. OK. It's not as good as my home state Hawaii favorite location because I'm totally biased. But I totally recommend it. Get some coffee or some ice cream nearby and I guarantee your day gets better.

OCEAN MALASADA (OM) located at the Ferry Building Plaza Marketplace. MALASADAS are a Hawaiian staple of Portuguese origins, essentially a fried rounds of pastry dough, dusted with sugar & cinnamon. Modern day malasadas are filled with delicious custard or a variety of fruit jellies. When you can't go to Hawaii to pick malasadas up, try Ocean Malasada. Ocean Malasada's are a bit smaller than what you'd find in Hawaii but maybe that's a positive point. You can find OM stationed inside the Ferry Building Marketplace, snug in a corner by one of the entrances, near Humphrey Slocombe ice cream. Counterperson was very nice and helpful with questions. I'll start by saying It's very difficult to buy ONE malasada. Don't try this. You're there, buy 'em up! You won't regret it. Maybe just don't get on a scale right away after enjoying them. Lol. Being good, and with every bit of restraint I could muster, I got the 3-combo box! One LIKIKOI (Passionfruit). One GUAVA. And one HAUPIA (Coconut). It's all good. Like asking which child is your favorite - cannot be done! They also have NUTELLA. Enjoy your favorite flavor or try one you've never had before.

Used Ocean Malasada on EZCater for our office and it was a huge hit. Ordered about 72 in total with a variety of flavors, including Nutella, Hopia, Guava, Traditional and Mango. The office did quite enjoy the variety of options and the donuts were light and fluffy. Overall a solid choice for dessert for a big group of people. Delivery arrived a little late, but wasn't too bad as they were coming from Downton SF to SSF, so we let the time slide. Will probably order again for the office at some point, but I would love to stop by the Ferry Building and check them out.

Replacing the vegan doughnut stand, they're serving up malasadas with vibrant island flavors. I'm a fan of filled doughnuts, so that's already win in my book. Plus they're not vegan, which makes them taste a little richer and lighter. Lilikoi: Brilliant contrast with tangy fruit cream against the rich and sugary doughnut. Love the fluffy texture and firm chew. Guava: A little more subtle than the lilikoi flavor, but still nice and tropical. Similarly creamy and fruity flavors. Ube: Love the bright colors and creamy filling. Closer to an indulgent custard, so different from the fruitier options. I'm such a fan of ube everything nowadays. Haupia: Filling felt skimpy on this one. Was creamy though, coconut creamy. Probably the most subtle of the flavors tried.

Came a little after the lunch rush on a Saturday & they were already out of almost everything except their original & guava. I was really looking forward to their ube & lilikoi. The malasadas were...decent. Wish they were a little more moist? Otherwise not bad & their filling is yummy. I know they're a little shop just inside the Ferry Building, but I hoping in the future they have a bigger stock of everything so they don't run out mid-day, especially on weekends!

As soon as we walked into the Ferry Building, you have to go in with the expectations that you're going to buy something to eat and/or drink. Of course, Ocean Malasada was the first thing we saw. Clean counter, clear menu, friendly staff. Ended up getting the kids a Nutella filled and a Haupia (sweet coconut) filled malasadas, and of course, had a take a bite and try them out. Walked around the Ferry Building checking while snacking on these was perfect. Of course the sugary dusting on the outside ends up all over your face, but thats a good problem. The malasadas were semi warm, fluffy and just dense enough where it felt like you were eating something with some substance. Not quite what you would find in Hawaii, but pretty close.

    Lilikoi malasada!

Next to one of the entrances of the Ferry Building, this small stand brings some nice Hawaiian feels with their malasadas! It's a fairly minimal stand, it appears the malasadas are prepared somewhere else...but they tasted very fresh on a nice Saturday morning! I got the plain and lilikoi ones, both are good but I really liked the lilikoi. A nice tart flavor added to the sweet pastry. The guy working the counter was helpful answering my Q's, friendly service. Great find in the ferry building, esp on a farmers market day!

    Feel free to zoom in!

I still love Donut Farm, even if it's faded in the wind as a temporary pop-up kiosk. This year, I got to see Ocean Malasada, famous for its Hawaiian donuts and ones with cream filling. Four flavors in one box worth $18: traditional, passion fruit, coconut, and guava. The other ones in each pouch have Nutella. Other than the outer sugary glaze, the guava I try is good as tart and sweet. Glad I made it to Ocean Malasada earlier at noon before they're gone like before. Props to a Hawaiian fella! Hope his business doesn't go away quickly before I might have another.

Leonard's? Pipeline? Not quite but pretty darn good. After reading somewhere in the past week or so, I knew a visit here was inevitable. The following Saturday, I remembered to come here after finishing my shopping and met Parker. He enthusiastically greeted me and said the only flavor he had left was ube, not particularly my fave. The following Tuesday, I met Kelly who told me all flavors were available. Besides buying a few to try at home , I bought a few for friends who worked the market. Knowing that they wouldn't be the same the next day, I cut the three that I bought in half and had a dessert tasting menu. I started with the original malasada (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=wOk-NfRQOJxqp6thQpCaFA), a basic one topped with sugar crystals. The flavors were on point, just as the texture and chew. Unlike other ones on the mainland, I didn't find these dry. Next was the lilikoi malasada (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=HegmBpIJHKgCYFQMqX7DpQ); the filling was on the thick side and custard like. It was okay and the passion fruit flavor was subtle. I finished with the guava malasada (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=PL2BfilOZJKICSvqCW9JPA); the filling oozed from it after cutting and the guava flavor was more prominent but still on the light side. I actually enjoyed the original one the best. The hours are very customer friendly, daily from 8 am to 3 pm. I will likely try the haupia next time. Both times that I came, there was no line. Look for this stand just inside of the entrance near Gott's.

This was a fun little surprise to find inside of Ferry Building! Unfortunately they aren't served warm, but the Hawaiian flavors were all there. We picked guava to share and I enjoyed the guava filling, but again just wishing it was warm! It was also a bit pricey for just one malasada at $4.75, but at least it's going toward a new small business.

It ended up taking us over two hours to get our pastries, and by the time we reached the front, some items had already sold out. This time, we decided to arrive right when the line opened at 7:45am on a Friday. Personally, I'd rather get there early, wait a little over an hour, and have the first pick of pastries than arrive later, wait even longer, and risk missing out on items. We were the third party in line and placed our order around 9:05am. By 9:15am, we had our pastries and drinks. After our first visit, I wasn't completely convinced the wait was worth it. The pastries were good, but the long line and wait time didn't feel justified. This visit, however, may have changed my mind. We ordered: * Madame Lorraine * Chorizo & Tot Croquiche * Morty P * Strawberry Vanilla Bean Bun * Pistachio Cardamom Sugar Croissant * Rocky Road Double Chocolate Cookie * Classic Croissant We also got two drinks: the S'mores Mocha and the Cherry Vanilla Almond Cappuccino. Don't skip their drinks, their specialty coffees are just as creative as their pastries. I really appreciate their rotating menu. Their pastries are always so creative, and I love that they experiment with unique flavor combinations that you don't typically see at a bakery. Some items are definitely more memorable than others, but I enjoy that there's always something new to try. Their pastries are well executed. The croissants are flaky and buttery. This visit, my personal favorite was the Chorizo & Tot Croquiche. Overall, this visit was a much better experience than my first. If you're willing to wait in line, I think it's worth checking out. Otherwise, you can always try your luck with their Hotplate presale.

The bakery was pretty quiet when it first opened, but after COVID it gained popularity on IG and now there is almost always a short waiting line here. There is also another location in Fremont. [Parking]: Metered street parking only and the shop is located in a busy part of the neighborhood (Irving Street Chinatown aka the "Third Chinatown"). I got lucky and immediately found a 30-minute metered parking spot nearby. [Ordering]: There was a short waiting line, but luckily it moved fairly quickly. Be prepared to place your order as the staff did not really answer my question when I asked "What are the most popular items here?" Customers can also place online pickup orders via the bakery's website. [Menu]: Per Pineapple King Bakery's Top 10 Items list and Square online menu, some of the most popular items include Guava Butter Pineapple Bun and Croissant Egg Tart (Portuguese egg tart). All drinks come with a complimentary Pineapple Bite. *** Egg Custard Tart (regular HK egg tart - $2.35): A solid egg tart, but it wasn't very flaky and tasted cold. Croissant Egg Tart (Portuguese egg tart - an upgrade of the traditional egg tart with croissant crust and caramelized top, $3.90): Definitely an upgraded version of regular egg custard tart and the croissant crust made all the difference. Guava Butter Pineapple Bun (one of our most popular items - cold, sweet, and smooth butter inside a warm pineapple bun - $4.65): S-tier bun with a soft & pillow-like texture. Hot Hong Kong Milk Tea drink with a complimentary Pineapple Bite (small, regular sweet - $5.25): I sampled the drink and it had the right balance of slight black tea bitterness and a hint of milk with just the right amount of sweetness. *** Top-notch pineapple buns and I can definitely see the appeal. Now that I know the drink comes with a complimentary Pineapple Bite, I actually prefer pairing the Pineapple Bite with the drink rather than ordering pineapple buns with various fillings on their own.

The other pastries are nothing special. I had a large order of a few boxes ($70+) and asked for a bag. I've always wanted to try this place since I see a line every time I walked by. There's a lot of foot and car traffic. It's definitely a busy area so expect to park in one of the nearby residential areas or be extremely and walk/bike/bus here! Upon stepping into the tiny shop, I was enveloped in the sweet smell of chocolate chip cookies. It was tempting to put that in my bag, but I stuck with my game plan. They do self serve for all the baked goods and drinks except the pizza and focaccia. You tell the cashier what you grabbed. There's self serve complimentary water on the side too. Got a pecan swirl, one of each square focaccia flavors, and a half pizza (hot). The pizza flavor of the day was triple mushroom with sesame ginger garlic vinaigrette and mozzarella. It was 10/10 delicious!! Do note that they don't heat up the focaccia. Personally, after tasting everything, I'd say the pizza is more worth it than the focaccia "pizzas". The pecan roll was quite addicting too. You can also skip the line if you want to order online on their website and schedule a pick up time, but my gift card didn't work so I just waited in line.
