    Tofu General
    Steve A.

Dragon Land is one of the best Chinese places in north Columbus. It's mostly just a takeout but it's a bargain for not so bad food. The place looks pretty average but almost no one eats in there. It's built for taking out. They have really great portions and prices. I had the Kung Pao tofu to go. It's about $7 for the lunch portion. It comes with lots of vegetables. It's not what everyone wants, but it gets boring if it's mostly just protein and rice. The best thing is how much of a steal the portions are there. It's great for several meals. The portions are massive even for the lunch so no need to get the bigger one. I like these places like Dragon Land. It's cheap and you get a lot for what you pay for. This is a good way to get something cheap for a few people.

    Crab Rangoon- one bite missing...

Happened to be nearby, but it is quite a bit out of my way. If this was in my neighborhood I'd be here often enough to get fat. There is life in this strip mall, but you need to keep your eyes open. Dragon Land is on the east end. It's small, and nothing fancy, but it is clean and comfortable. The owners are great- friendly, helpful, easygoing. I tried my usual dishes for a first-time Chinese place visit, for comparison purposes, but there is a lot of interesting stuff on the menu for some other time. Started with crab Rangoon- they were good, but not amazing. Not a lot of crab inside. I had the Mongolian beef lunch special, which came with average fried rice and a good egg roll. The entree was tasty, with tender beef, lots of green onions, and a mild sauce. I'll be back if I'm up this way, to explore the menu a bit. I'd say my typical testers were just good, but it looks like there are things they do better.

First time wandering in here. And the owner knew I had never been there! She told me all about being in that spot for 20 years, and asked me where I normally go for Asian food. When I ordered the Phad Thai I was rewarded with a " good choice." I cannot claim to be an expert on Thai noodles, but I really did enjoy this lunch. She warned that it was spicy, but it was pretty mild compared to the warning. I enjoyed all the extra veggies and the large number of shrimp for a $7 lunch deal. I wasn't aware that I ordered a lunch special, but the combo came with an egg roll. That was the only thing that fell a little short for me. My preference is a lighter, thinner wrapper on egg rolls. This was a bit thick and doughy. Just not my favorite. I was enticed, before I left with my to-go order, that I should call in my order and ask for fried dumplings as they take 20 minutes. That would be too long to wait for a walk-in order. I will keep that in mind for my next trip! I'm retry sure she will remember me.

To go General Tsaos lunch special with egg roll

Okay you open your Yelp app about places to eat around your new job and you see positive reviews so you go I'm locked and ready to do this. You go to the place and it's kinda awkward because there's this group of gentlemen who are ordering but she gets confused who ordered the hot rice. Im thinking okay this can get better I order carry out. It's really suspicious when it comes out too fast. I got the lunch General Tsos with a choice of fried rice or white rice and an egg roll. The egg roll is nothing but mush and tasteless. I think they are frozen and it tastes like nothing and when you look inside it it's just mush. The General Tsao has to be frozen. The dang breading on the chicken hurts my teeth and gums just to try and eat it. When I throw away most of my meal it speaks volumes. I'll not go here again and neither should you. Ick.

    Singapore noodle lunch special

Another great Mom & Pop hole in the strip mall kinda place. After reading many Yelper reviews I finally made the short trip over to try out this neighborhood Asian eatery. I scored a lunch special, drink, eggroll and Singapore Noodles (my test dish for most first tries at Amer-Asian restaurants). The eggroll for me was disappointing for my own tastes, thickly wrapped and over-fried like it may have been fried a second time. Thankfully the Singapore noodles overcame that eggroll. A mix of thin rice noodles, shrimp, pork slices, egg and veggies tossed in a mild curry sauce. Friendly service in this small dining room easily adds that extra star in this review. Saw a steady stream of happy take-out customers during my visit so I can see why this is a great little neighborhood joint and worth stopping by if you find yourself in this neck of the woods.

When I walked in the atmosphere was great, I could smell good food and heard conversations. There's a large area with large round tables to right and to the left are booths and almost all of them were full. The menu was a mix of Americanized Chinese, traditional Chinese and included Dim Sum as well. There were a number of dishes we didn't know much about and there were dishes being enjoyed by other customers that looked delicious. The wait staff was more than happy to explain the dishes and/or show us on the menu what someone was eating. They took very good care of us and shared the tasks of bringing our food, filling water, and just checking in. Now the food. The food came out very quickly! We all received a well filled bowl of rice. First out was the string beans, perfectly cooked, not droopy, and the flavors of garlic and hot peppers. Even though the peppers were there the heat was not overpowering at all. Next was the shredded pork with garlic sauce. The textures of the pork and bamboo shoots were a nice contrast and the sauce was perfectly balanced and craveable. The special grilled lamb, I was told, was some of the best in the city. It was tender and well spiced. Even when he said he was full he just couldn't stop eating it. For the dim sum order we got the shrimp dumplings, soup dumplings, scallion pancake, and sesame balls and they brought a soy sauce and a chili oil with them. The shrimp dumplings were tender but the dough was pretty sticky. I think this is normal and they were tasty with some of the oil on them. The scallion pancakes were very thin and gummy, this is the only thing we ordered that I would not get again. The soup dumplings were very small but packed a lot of flavor. The dough did stick together a bit so unfortunately some of the soup did leak out. The sesame balls were the hit and we're just the right amount of sweetness that we considered them desert. They were large, at least 2" in size, with a wonderful sesame seed covered exterior and a soft, sweet center. Chuan Jiang Hao Zi is a wonderful somewhat hidden gem. If you want traditional Chinese cuisine including all the different offal they have it and I would totally try it here over anyone else if I was brave enough. Portions were a good size for the price. I highly recommend checking them out!

I had the Kung Pao Chicken & it was by far the best I'd ever eaten. So many layers of flavor & heat. (Wasn't feeling to adventurous this trip) The restaurant was well decorated & the staff took great care of us. Quick and attentive service. We started with crispy dumplings (6), crispy egg rolls (2), and a scallion pancake. Bing, their crepe, wasn't available our night. My dining companions loved the pancake - for me perhaps a bit too much drizzled sauce. It was helpfully quartered when brought to the table so sharing was easy. The dumplings were indeed crispy and probably my favorite with a standard dark dipping sauce. The egg rolls were standard and perhaps a bit undersized and over fried, but a good creamy dipping sauce was a pivot away from the sweet chili sauce that usually accompanies such apps. Ramen is clearly the focus of the menu and three of us had ramen with chicken and one with pork. They spoke favorably of the broth and the combos of mushrooms, boiled egg, greens. I had the rice vermicelli with chicken that they called a salad. I was expecting the classic Vietnamese staple but this one had some adaptations, perhaps to a fusion or one might say less ethnic nod. Small things but the ample portion served in a small bowl made it hard to mix the rice noodles, lettuce, carrot, cucumber and chicken that is a common approach to the dish after drowning all the ingredients in both sweet sauce (nuoc cham), siracha and/or hoisin sauce. It only came with the nuoc cham. They brought Siracha when I asked for it, but I'm a fan of having these condiments on the table standard. Again, had the sense that the business lunch crowd that is probably the primary audience isn't likely to be as focused on the more authentic ingredients. The chicken was also not grilled and sliced but had a pleasant preparation. Just know it won't be the charred flavor that is so common. Finally, not to obsess on this one dish, but cutting the lettuce leaves more would enable easier chop sticks combos of the ingredients in single bites. Overall it worked for us. I am definitely the most focused on (my companions would say obsessed) on connection to what these dishes should be. If adaptations work well for you, Tiger+Lily likely will as well.

Seriously those wontons are one of the best things in the whole city. They're SO good I could eat a few orders of those alone and be happy. Egg rolls are nice, but just a simple egg roll. Nicely crispy and tasty with the spicy mustard. The Sichuan sliced beef was the perfect thing for a chilly rainy dinner. We love spicy so I'm a bad judge of heat level, but this is spicy but a numbing spicy. Lovely spooned over steamed rice. The cabbage and bean sprouts were my favorite bits in this dish because they added a crunch. Might ask for extra next time!

Plus, I figured hibachi can take awhile, and I usually don't have a long time for lunch. Today I had a little more time, and I made a point to head over. I wasn't sure if there would be dine in, but there is, plenty of seating inside and out. Inside there are seats at the counter, plus booths, plus I think a couple tables. Menu is pretty basic: hibachi and a few sides. I got steak and chicken, with fried rice, and you pick two vegetables so I picked cabbage and bean sprouts. You get a Yum Yum sauce, and you can add others, but I didn't need them. And the sauce container they gave me was plenty big. The steak was tender and perfectly cooked, the chicken was tender and flavorful, cooked in a nice sauce. The fried rice was great. The vegetables were perfectly cooked. And it all came out in about five minutes. They had a steady stream of carry out customers, but they still got mine on the grill, apparently as soon as I ordered it. Fast and good, and competitively priced for hibachi. A big portion, but not a huge, two days' worth of leftovers portion. But I was stuffed and couldn't finish it all. When I saw the drink cooler with just water and a few juices, I figured I'd have to go with those, but they do have fountain drinks. And they actually have a pretty good variety, cola, diet cola, cream soda, blueberry, cherry I think, and a few others. Anyway, several pleasant surprises, the food lived up to its reputation, I was in and out fast, and for not a whole lot of money in this day and age. I will be back.
