I really enjoyed my takeout from this restaurant, although I SWEAR it's called "Sushi Express" now. I honestly only walked in bc I thought they had sushi... they don't, lol. As someone who grew up in Westerville I've been eating at New China Express for well over a decade. In all of that time I've tried a handful of dishes. Including orange chicken, sesame chicken, sweet and sour chicken, fried wontons, and wonton soup. The sweet and sour chicken here is simply unmatched. The chicken is so perfectly battered and fried to the best crispness. The sauce is sooooo thick, red, sweet, sour, everything. It's all I order now after trying other things, it's just perfection. The fried wontons are my favorite appetizer, super crispy exterior with a juicy flavorful filling. I can't recommend this place enough if you're looking for some great chinese fare. The one thing I'll say about this specific location is that it's in a bit of an odd location now that it moved after Kroger bought the strip they were in. read more

A good place in Westerville is New China Express. It's good food and lots of it. The portions are all massive. It has a few healthy choices. There's several tofu and vegetable options for a good price. I had the Tofu With Vegetables. It's about $6.35 for the regular portion. This was massive. It's crazy to think there's a bigger size. It could have had more spice but it was still good. The overall taste was pretty mild. It comes in a light sauce so it's not too hearty. The portions are so big though so it's good to share. It has many other cheap meals. They also have cheap lunch specials but unfortunately none of these include tofu. If you're in Westerville looking for good Chinese go to New China Express. My husband and I ordered take out from this location. I got sesame chicken and rice, husband ordered sweet and sour pork and rice, and we ordered dumplings. The sesame chicken was awful. Hard little nuggets of chicken that you couldn't chew without breaking a tooth. My husband said his sweet and sour pork had an odd taste like it was old or not cooked properly and the dumplings were very chewy and had no taste. I don't expect to get 5 star cuisine at a fast food Chinese restaurant but we paid for a meal we couldn't eat. I called and left a message for the manager. She called back promptly and promised to issue a credit back to my account since we threw the food away. She even sent me a text message confirming it. I have never received the credit and now she will not respond to messages I have sent inquiring about the credit that was promised. Really a nice way to treat your customers! The sushi was not on the menu but written on a board near the cashier. I placed a carryout order for Sesame Chicken, which came with a drink for lunch deal and added a California Roll. The food was cooked up fast. Watched the cashier make my sushi which was beautiful, fresh, and very tasty. All this for near $10. They give you huge portions. It doesn't look like much, but you can pay far more and get far less elsewhere (trust me, I have). Chinese food is pretty ubiquitous, but it is surprising how much variation there is in quality. In the interest of full-disclosure, I should say that although I've been eating Chinese food my entire life, I know next to nothing about it. I am totally unqualified to say that this place is "authentic" or any other adjective which requires knowledge. What I can say is that New China Express has food that me and my family really enjoy at great prices. The three of us will split two entrees (their Kung Pao chicken is the best I've ever had and my wife/son like the Sweet and Sour Chicken) and some steamed dumplings (which are terrific), and a few egg rolls and be out the door for less than the three of us could eat at a fast food burger place, and with leftovers to spare. I've only eaten in-store once or twice. The place is clean and modern, but hardly upscale. You order from a counter and come up when they call out your order. Nothing wrong with it, just not fancy. I really wanted to like this place. The restaurant is very clean, fresh looking, and inviting. Portions are large, but the food just wasn't up to par. We got vegetable lo mein, and general tso's, and fried rice. The Lo Mein was our best of the three, but still lackluster. General Tso's was very disappointing, it was very soggy, not crisp, and was semi sweet without any spice at all, the fried rice was also very bland. Other reviews appear to be pretty good, but i wont be able to give it another chance after this visit. This didn't even come close to buffet quality in my view. read more

Craving some Chinese food we called in our order for pick up. Upon our arrival the order was sitting there ready for us. Awesome! We ordered steamed dumplings, egg rolls, combo fried rice, garlic chicken and honey beef. The dumplings could be great with some finesse. The filling had great flavor but the wrapper was way too thick and doughy. This was the best our meal had to offer. The egg rolls were cold. The fried rice tasted like rice with soy sauce and a little vegetables and meat. The honey beef was too cloyingly sweet. The garlic chicken had zero flavor, like they forgot to season it...with anything (certainly no garlic was added). This could be the worst Chinese food we have ever tried. read more

For the past 6 months I've been told over and over again by a friend that New China Express has superior Orange Chicken to that of Panda Express. Except they call it Honey Chicken here. I finally took him up on the challenge and tried New China the other day. This locale is bright, clean, and fresh. The pictures hanging above the counter are your typical "Chinese Take-Out Stock Photos" but are crisp and appetizing to look at. They might even be photographs of what is actually served at New China. And the prices! New China is so dirt cheap that you would expect lesser quality food and ingredients. Instead I was treated to an overwhelming serving of Honey Chicken made with quality meat and Fried Rice so fresh it's still fluffy. So was New China's Orange (Honey) Chicken better than Panda Express. To be honest it was about the same to me. What really sold me was the fried rice. It was light, fluffy, not greasy, and with just a hint of Soy Sauce on every bite. For $5.15 you could split this meal with another person and still have leftovers. read more

I was looking for something new (as I am almost every week) and stumbled across this place and chose it as a place for a lunch meeting with a friend. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. It's located in a strip mall next to a Kroger but don't let that deter you, it's clean, sanitary and you can tell that the management took the time with the décor to incorporate a "modern" feel to it. Posts were right...good stuff...not healthy, but it has flavor. Regarding price...the General Tso is on their lunch specials board and priced at $5.59, with drink included. Honey orange chicken is $5.99, but the drink is NOT included...drink and tax put me over $8. I think they know what they have with the HOC. Speedy service...food was hot. The combination shrimp fried rice is a go to of mine when I'm in the area. Along with the friend rice, I tend to venture with a chicken plate and won ton soup. The chicken is always juicy and cooked to my liking. Over the years they had made this establishment more appealing to a dinning in experience with a flat screen TV and welcoming decor. The most impressive thing about this establishment is that they pump the money back into the store making it more up to date. This is an indication of a good business owner. Who says good food can't be found in a strip mall? New China is located in a Kroger strip mall and it's definitely some of my favorite Chinese food in Westerville. The food is so good, especially for what you pay for it. For about $5.50 you can get delicious honey chicken (my personal fav) and even have enough for lunch the next day because the portions really are THAT big. You definitely get the best bang for your buck here. This was the first place I ever ate Chinese food and also where I spent many an off campus senior lunch in high school, so I do have an ever so slight personal attachment to it, but I promise I'm not biased and it really is worth trying!
