Spectacular food. Chicken with green peppercorn is one of my favorite dishes in Columbus.

I arrived at noon and the parking lot was already pretty full for this very unassuming Chinese restaurant from the outside. There is plenty of free parking which is nice. When I walked in the atmosphere was great, I could smell good food and heard conversations. There's a large area with large round tables to right and to the left are booths and almost all of them were full. The menu was a mix of Americanized Chinese, traditional Chinese and included Dim Sum as well. There were a number of dishes we didn't know much about and there were dishes being enjoyed by other customers that looked delicious. The wait staff was more than happy to explain the dishes and/or show us on the menu what someone was eating. They took very good care of us and shared the tasks of bringing our food, filling water, and just checking in. Now the food. The food came out very quickly! We all received a well filled bowl of rice. First out was the string beans, perfectly cooked, not droopy, and the flavors of garlic and hot peppers. Even though the peppers were there the heat was not overpowering at all. Next was the shredded pork with garlic sauce. The textures of the pork and bamboo shoots were a nice contrast and the sauce was perfectly balanced and craveable. The special grilled lamb, I was told, was some of the best in the city. It was tender and well spiced. Even when he said he was full he just couldn't stop eating it. For the dim sum order we got the shrimp dumplings, soup dumplings, scallion pancake, and sesame balls and they brought a soy sauce and a chili oil with them. The shrimp dumplings were tender but the dough was pretty sticky. I think this is normal and they were tasty with some of the oil on them. The scallion pancakes were very thin and gummy, this is the only thing we ordered that I would not get again. The soup dumplings were very small but packed a lot of flavor. The dough did stick together a bit so unfortunately some of the soup did leak out. The sesame balls were the hit and we're just the right amount of sweetness that we considered them desert. They were large, at least 2" in size, with a wonderful sesame seed covered exterior and a soft, sweet center. Chuan Jiang Hao Zi is a wonderful somewhat hidden gem. If you want traditional Chinese cuisine including all the different offal they have it and I would totally try it here over anyone else if I was brave enough. Portions were a good size for the price. Spicy Dumplings w/ chili oil - Excellent Crab Rangoons - Above Average+ My family ordered Mongolian Beef, Kung Pao Chicken & Hunan Chicken. I had the Kung Pao Chicken & it was by far the best I'd ever eaten. So many layers of flavor & heat. (a bit spicy for me, but I struggled through & loved every bite) Will definitely be back to explore some of the more "exotic" dishes on the menu. (Wasn't feeling to adventurous this trip) The restaurant was well decorated & the staff took great care of us. Passing by the city found this restaurant has dim sum menu and decided gave a shot. Ordered dim sum menu: Chive buns- delicious highly recommended ; taro balls- quite salty and really can't taste anything ; couldn't help to wonder did chiefs taste the stuffings before serving? ; shrimp dumplings- not much flavor on its own unless dipped into the soy sauce- even though still missing some flavor; pork shumai it is not bad. Kun po chicken- it tasted really really spicy , if you love spicy definitely this is your dish! Overall the dishes are not consistent tasteful/flavorful between dishes which is too bad. read more

We ended up at Chuan Jiang Hai Zi for Christmas dinner around 4:30 PM since most restaurants were closed, and this place was packed -- clearly a popular choice, and the strong Yelp reviews are what brought us in. After being seated, it took a bit before our server came by with menus and waters, and then another 15 minutes or so before our order was taken. I started with the egg drop soup, then ordered the shredded pork with garlic sauce. The sauce had a nice semi-spicy kick with bits of garlic, tossed with noodles and green peppers, and finished with green onions. My wife ordered the chicken with string beans, which was grilled chicken breast with stir-fried green beans, a slight charred flavor, and served with white rice. We stuck with water, though the cocktail menu did look tempting. First things first -- the food was really good. Big portions, served hot, and full of flavor. No complaints at all on the food side. Delicious and satisfying, especially on a busy holiday. Now...the service was a little strange. My pork dish and rice came out about 15-20 minutes after ordering, but my wife's food didn't arrive until another 20 minutes later. No apology, no explanation -- just dropped off. It was awkward eating separately, especially on Christmas. I'll chalk it up to being overwhelmed, understaffed, or slow in the kitchen due to the holiday rush. If you go when they aren't slammed, you'll probably have a much smoother experience and actually eat together. Let me preface this review as being an outlier! This review is for my experience on Christmas Day for dinner. I considered not sharing it, but want to because of transparency. We made a reservation in November for 5 for 5:30 on Christmas. They told us to come early otherwise they can't hold our table. Not really how reservations work, but we love this place and wanted to come again for this Christmas (we went last year, also). Our party arrives early and it was obvious that they were behind. A bunch of door dashers just standing around in the entry and at the desk waiting for food pickups. We get places right next to them (not ideal). We were given menus and were told she couldn't take our order yet but got us waters. After a huge wait, we placed our order and settled in for the next long wait to get our food. The problem wasn't waiting, but I had a huge issue with other people practically sitting on our table and crowding our space. It was really awkward. I think delivery pickups need to be streamlined because no one wants a bunch of strangers standing over them while trying to be patient while waiting for food. As food starts to come out, egg rolls were stone cold. We ate them anyway because we were so hungry. The rest of the food came out in waves which was fine - everything was so hot and delicious -- zero complaints there! The servers worked REALLY hard to accommodate all the people who were there. It wasn't perfect, but I'm sharing in hopes that they consider a new system for food pickup people and proper reservations. Big groups who were say after us were getting orders in and food received before us. It wasn't great, but I'm willing to try again. Super yum! There's a plethora of Szechuan restaurants in Columbus, but this place had larger portions sizes for a better price. The stuffed eggplant off if the dim sum menu was HUGE - it was an entree in itself. The dry pot cauliflower was delicious, just wish it was a little spicier. And the salt and pepper fish was nicely seasoned, just wish they left it in the deep fryer for 30 seconds more. Overall delicious food! read more

Chuan Jiang Hao Zi continues to impress. This time we ordered their wonton in chill oil, their dry beef, hot pot, their fish fillet with green peppercorns, and there sorted, Chinese water, spinach. Everything was excellent. The fish fillet with green peppercorns had a nice kick to it, the beef hot pot had thinly cut cauliflower which was delicious. Went to this place on Christmas day. The place was nice and clean. Great lighting and very busy. I ordered chicken and green beans. It came with a side of white rice. The food came 20 minutes after my husband received his food so we didn't get to eat together. The food was just sat down on the table with no explanation for why it took so long, no apologies, nothing. Food was served very hot. The green beans were nicely sauted and crunchy. The chicken was tender and the rice was perfectly sticky. I hope the service is better next time because the food was great but if a table of 2 has to wait 20 minutes between us getting our food it will be the last time we visit. read more

I just finished eating my takeout order of house fried rice from Chuan Jiang Hao Zi. I was really excited to try them since my fellow Yelpers have given them a 4.5 star average. Maybe fried rice isn't their strong point... but it was only okay. It tasted fine, but the rice was overcooked and too mushy for my liking. One order of this fried rice is $14 plus $1 online ordering convenience fee. For $15, I could get the same sized container full of meat with a side of rice at other Chinese restaurants. My fried rice had chicken, beef, and shrimp but they weren't particularly generous with the meats. So I don't think the value is good either. Maybe I'll get a chance to try their other dishes somewhere down the line, but best I can give them at this time is 3 stars. read more

This spot's super convenient -- right on Ackerman near campus and around the corner from Tous les Jours. We walked in and got seated right away, which was nice. We've got a go-to dim sum place in Columbus, but since we were around OSU, we figured we'd give this one a shot. Ordered a few things off the dim sum menu and a couple from the regular menu. For dim sum, we got the Pork Shumai, Chicken Feet, Beef Omasum, Shanghai Soup Dumplings, and Stuffed Eggplant. The Soup Dumplings and Stuffed Eggplant were definitely the winners. The Shumai was massive but kinda fell apart -- the wrapper didn't hold up. The Chicken Feet weren't cooked long enough, so they were hard to eat, and the Beef Omasum didn't really have any flavor -- pretty bland. From the regular menu, we tried the Spicy Pig's Large Intestine in Dry Pot and the Porcini & Pork Short Rib Soup. The Intestine had good texture but was super numbing from all the Sichuan peppercorns -- spicy for sure, just a bit too much. The Soup though? Amazing. Simple, flavorful, and the porcini mushrooms really made it shine. Would totally get that again. Service was quick and friendly, no complaints there. This is the best food I had in Columbus. The foods are very authentic and foods all come with white or fried rice. We ordered special grilled cumin lamb and deep fried chicken. The chicken isn't super spicy but my favorite was the cumin lamb. The food portion was large and we had leftover good enough for another meal! They also have a great beverage selection. read more

Authentic Szechuan in Ohio? I was a doubter. Chuan Jiang Hao Zi proved me wrong. Fish Fillet in Szechuan Green Pepper Broth - 5/5 A must try. Lightly floured whitefish in a Szechuan green peppercorn broth, garnished with Szechuan green peppercorns. Soft, tender fish in a numbing broth. Special Grilled Lamb - 5/5 Everything you want from a lamb dish. Nice spicy seasoning, soft tender lamb. Wonton Soup - 2/5 I'd skip this one. The broth had a bit of an unusual flavor and the dumplings did not taste fresh. Water Spinach - 4/5 Fresh, vegetal, and a great way to cool yourself down in between bites of spicy goodness. I'd also avoid any of the American Chinese food on offer here. One member of our dining party tried it and was not impressed. Stick to the Szechuan classics. They must be good as they sometimes sell out of these. House fried rice. We got two orders of This for six people. We probably only needed one... the sizing is generous and they dont skimp on ingredients. We all were very pleasantly pleased. It had pork, beef, shrimp and maybe some chicken along with ample veggies. Delicious. Not Greasy Beef with broccoli. The beef was surprisingly tender and had that buttery melt in your mouth texture. I hate beef and I found this dish to be very good. I would even have eaten it if I was served it as it was quite good. And I dont usually voluntarily eat a meal containing beef. Lol. General tso chicken. Keep in mind this is an authentic chinese restaurants and gen tso is American food trying to be chinese. This was okay. It had big pieces of super fresh brocoli but the chicken didnt have that rich american brown sauce. It was more traditional and cooked into it. Sweet and sour chicken: another americanized dish. Not the greatest. By the time we got back to thebfairgrounds this was the only dish that was straight up cold. It needed to be coated in sweet and sour sauce which warm whichbit didnt get the opportunity to do. This was a dud. Disliked it strongly. Hometown braised pork: big chunks of braised pork with orka? I didnt have any but there wasnt hardly any left. They said it was good. Garlic eggplant: Show stealer. This was the winning dish. The eggplant is the asian style bright purple eggplant. It was so flavorful and not mushy. There wasnt any left. We all tried it and each loved it - this we would get multiple orders next time. Heck I am getting some either today or tomorrow, as I cant stop obsessing about it. My friend from China said that and the chive bun were his favs. I strongly recommend this place. This is the second trip in and both times it has been excellent, food fresh, nice sized portions and ready in a reasonable time. The place is nice and clean with a lot of seatings. The server was friendly but the person who brought the food just slammed the plates on the table. Service is fast. The best thing I had was the shredded pork in garlic sauce. It said it was spicy on the menu but it wasn't. It was really flavorful with tender pieces of pork with nice crunch from the veggies and mushroom, but if you like it spicy, you might want to ask for extra spice. The fish soup was interesting-I didn't care for it but the tingly sensation you get from the peppercorn was something I never experienced and am still happy I tried it. Soup dumpling was a huge disappointment. It was cold and tasted frozen. The sauce that came with it was so so salty with no vinegar or ginger. OMG...this place is now the standard for Chinese food in CBus in my book. It is the most authentic Chinese food you will find in CBus. I have now been twice and have been blown away at the flavors and taste of the food. I have loved everything I have ordered so far. I also love how they offer authentic dishes you will not find at any other place in Columbus. Dining area is very clean. They have two areas: one for traditional family style dining and one for that is more of a traditional booth setting. They have a few TVs around. Service is amazing. The chicken and white rice is good but the general so's sauce is really watered down!!

Dim Sum was ok. Sesame balls were giant but good. Soup dumplings, shrimp dumplings, and pork shumai did not have much flavor. Scallion pancakes were good. The Mongolian Beef was the best dish at the table! Wontons in chili oil were not spicy at all. The dishes that were supposed to be spicy were lacking in spice. My family and coworkers have all been here multiple times in the same week, because the food is that good. I initially came here to get my wife some carry out, and made a note to come back and try it again when we had the chance. Just on a whim, we stopped in again and had a great meal with rice and the traditional boiled fish. I realized that they have a deep fried spicy chicken dish that I absolutely love as well, so I convinced my coworkers to come the next day for the lunch special. (The lunch special menu is a great value, by the way and highly recommended) Then we liked it so much we went again the next day. And the next day with my family again. This restaurant was a few minutes from our hotel. We went in and the place had a great ambiance and was very clean. Seating was plentiful and the aroma was fantastic. We ordered our food and it was delivered to the table after our appetizers. The food was cooked to perfection and was enough for a great meal. Came here on a recommendation of my good CBus local buddy and it lived up to its recommendation and then some! The all day dim sum items is wonderful to have! I would've engaged in that had I not ordered a bunch of all day dim sum back in CLE on V-Day... Came here with my white BF who tragically does not like the Sichuan mala flavor profile but you know what, you never know what you end up discovering, so we ordered plenty--red chili oil wontons (only okay. The wontons were on the small side and no cilantro but the presentation was ON POINT), hand shredded chicken cold chili noodles with bean sprouts (I've ordered this at many different places and this has been the best version! Perfect width noodles with that chewiness and just a chili flavor with no mala...crunchy, smooth, cold, springiness, a melange of textures!), mapo tofu (I thought it was pretty good although some ground pork and peas would've completed it! BF couldn't handle this one but I thought it went so well with the rice!). The presentation of every dish was amazing. Prices were mostly expected, not overly high but not cheap either. Love the selection and authenticity of the Sichuan dishes. Taste was great and portions were pretty good. Service was very warm, friendly and speed of food coming out was FAST. We waited less than 5 minutes for our first dish to come out. Italian restaurants and American restaurants, take note!!! The location is great too because it's in this plaza of other shops...Tous les jour being the absolute draw of this place!!! Plenty of parking and the customers were a good mix of real Chinese people and adventurous white people and lots of mixed crowds! We stopped in for lunch before a Buckeyes game, and it was absolutely the right call. The service was friendly and perfectly timed--quick enough for a game-day meal but never rushed. We ordered chili dumplings, sweet and sour chicken, cashew chicken, lo mein, and the fried rice, which deserves a special shoutout. The flavors were incredibly authentic, and the fried rice was especially good--perfect texture, well-seasoned, and clearly made fresh. Every dish we tried was delicious, and you can really taste the quality in the ingredients and preparation. Totally unexpected to find delicious and authentic Szechuan food in Columbus, Ohio. The place was immaculately clean, the services with quick, friendly and efficient. The portions were huge, but we needed to get a few dishes to share. One of my favorite things to eat is the Chongqing Chicken (spicy fried chicken) and this place hit the mark, the chicken was crispy and spicy. The been and broccoli was one of the best I've had and it did not taste like American fast Chinese food, which is usually what I expect. My husband loved the spicy wontons. And the mapo tofu was good, but was probably the least favorite out of everything we ordered. We had plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day and still didn't finish everything. Beautiful decor and ambiance at Chuan Jiang Hao Zi, and the presentation of the dishes were nice. Unfortunately, the food itself didn't quite live up to our expectations. The wait staff were super friendly and we were greeted with a warm welcome upon entering, however neither one of us were wowed by the taste. One thing that was a bit odd was that they brought my husband's food out before mine, even though we ordered together. The dishes we ordered were decent, but nothing that particularly stood out. Maybe we just caught them on an off day? To their credit, they did accommodate my request to substitute tofu instead of chicken, which was great. However, the sesame tofu I ordered tasted more like hot and sour tofu instead, which was a bit of a letdown. If they can work on the food quality and consistency in service, I'd definitely consider coming back for the lovely atmosphere, presentation, and friendly staff. read more

All of my favorite Chinese restaurants have closed in recent years: Lee's, China Dynasty at Lane Avenue, Peking Dynasty on Fifth...sigh. Then, along comes this place! (I am uncertain how it's pronounced, but it means delicious food to us!) Greeted warmly upon arrival, and seated in a spacious dining room. One open area of tables; one area with booths. A pictorial menu in English and another for those who prefer more traditional, less Americanized fare. A strong array of appetizers and a vast selection of main courses. Everyone has different preferences, so recommendations are meaningless, but I love the vegetable noodle dishes and pot stickers, my wife loves the chicken and beef dishes. Lots of students from nearby Ohio State and many commuters and business folks eat here. Ample parking nearby in a large lot. And a liquor store next door if you're carrying out. Our advice: order enough to fill up here AND have take away for later home consumption. read more

I was a fan of Fortune in their previous incarnations, and it was sorely missed by many, so I was eager to try this. Was nearby a couple of times today and decided to stop in. Even if I hadn't been a fan before, this experience would have turned me into one. It's in a strip under the City apartments, but inside it is bright and airy, and classy- modern but traditional, if that makes sense. Not old-school, like the few remaining classic Chinese-American places in town. The atmosphere and menu are more up to date and authentic. You can get the things you remember, but also many interesting and unusual dishes. I came in intending to have a lunch special, but was tempted by so much more. I wanted several things, and the server walked me through some options. I went with the lamb- it doesn't say cumin lamb, but that's what it is. A huge mound of tender, flavorful beastie, with sauteed onions and a few other veggies, but mostly a lot of meat. No bones. A little spicy, and just heavily spiced. Yum. I got it with fried rice, good but nothing unusual. I also tried the chive-shrimp dumplings. Excellent. Someone mentioned the dim sum seeming previously-frozen, but these were not. Fresh, nicely crafted, big dumplings that held together and tasted amazing. Subtle compared to the lamb, so a nice counterpoint. I didn't need them- by the time I finished them and had more lamb, I didn't have quite enough to take home so I cleaned my plate, but was overstuffed. So good though. Service was excellent.
