My review of this cafe is short and sweet. It is unpretentious, unassuming, and doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. Yes, no credit cards. How many reviews for this place have mentioned it? I'm not sure why this is such an apocalyptic event, especially when they have an ATM inside the restaurant. I had the Dinner Bell Sandwich which was a large, fresh French roll with piles of roast beef, gooey melted cheese, and grilled mushrooms and peppers. The beef was lean and tasty. The sandwich came with a good helping of fries, again basic. My dining companion had the tuna melt and enjoyed it. The service from our waitress was attentive and genuine. I gave the place 4 stars, because yes, I'm a fan. It is a perfect stop for a no-frills, diner style breakfast or lunch. And now, to address Happy C.'s review. I normally don't refer to another review, but with the ridiculousness of that review, I wasn't able to refrain. Happy seems to initially be obsessed with the no credit card thing, to the point of encouraging the restaurant to increase their prices in order to cover the processing fees. One sentence later, a complaint is lodged about the current prices being too high. Regardless of this bit of schizophrenia, a) the prices are completely reasonable. I have a picture or our check posted on here. I can't see that it is in any way not an appropriate price for two large lunch sandwiches, fries and drinks. b) if a no credit cards policy is working for The Dinner Bell (and it obviously is, since as the sign says they have been open since 1939) why change it? You say you "knew this going in" and were "prepared", so what's the problem? "No one was overwhelmed with their food". Since when was a diner breakfast supposed to be overwhelming? And by the way, what did you eat that was underwhelming? Or did you even eat there at all? Methinks that you possibly work at The Lone Spur. And finally, the apparent carnivorous plant that kept "creeping over onto the table". Obviously The Dinner Bell has missed a huge marketing opportunity if they have Little Shop of Horrors type plants that move on their own and try to sneak their way across your table and steal your food. In all the Yelp reviews I've read for restaurants, this has to be the funniest/most ridiculous statement I've ever seen. I investigated said plant, and can attest that I didn't see it move or "creep" during my dining experience. I even placed my finger on one of the leaves, and must confess I broke out into a cold sweat, wondering if my finger would be devoured by the monster houseplant, that was probably hopping mad since it "was too large (and not kept up) ", but it must have been full after possibly dining on some leftovers from the previous table as they, no doubt, were in a panicked frenzy over at the ATM machine getting money out since they hadn't seen the 3-4 signs located around the cafe stating they don't take credit cards. So the best way for me to describe The Dinner Bell is "basic". And sometimes basic is just fine. Oh, and they don't take credit cards. read more

Will not be returning after poor service. After being seated we waited for an extra long time to order and then watched someone seated several minutes after us have their order taken before us and if I wouldn't have said something she was going to forget about us for even longer. They were busy but food took longer than it should have to come out and when it did come out one of the orders had the wrong side. They made it right but only with more time waisted. Hands down best breakfast potatoes I've ever eaten! Walking to the back of the building to get to the café, I was a little concerned... if you go there you'll see why. Once we walked in, the café was small but very clean and welcoming. We ordered a granola and banana waffle, side of country potatoes and side of eggs. The waffle was tasty, but they really skimped on the granola, there was no crunch whatsoever. The country potatoes were amazing, perfectly seasoned with bell peppers and onions. I could have just ordered those and been a happy woman! This place is super cute and has excellent customer service. As far as the food that I had, not good. My husband and I went for breakfast, he had a basic 2 egg breakfast w/hash browns,toast,and sausage. I had the chicken fried steak & eggs. We both ordered our eggs over medium and they were way overcooked, my chicken fried steak tasted like Denny's version exactly, and that my friends is gross. My husband said his sausage tasted "off" and both of us had burnt toast. There does seem to be a lot of locals that come here, so maybe the food I had was an exception, or maybe the come back for the service??? Found this place by accident wandering around the town and decided to go in. When I passed a table with a cinnamon roll, I knew I had to try one. Ended up ordering a cinnamon roll and a burger and fries, everything was excellent and the service was really good. This place is definitely a good spot to hit up if you have the chance. read more

Meh. We finally came after hearing from everyone how great this place was. I got an omelet and it was ok, rather forgettable. Everyone else said the same thing about their food except for mom. She got the waffle and it was stone cold. She couldn't even get half way through it, it was that bad. Thought about asking the waitress to do something about it but she was scowling so bad that we didn't dare ask her for anything. Also, cash only which is kind of a bummer. Just had breakfast here after walking out if Apple Pan , great friendly service , breakfast came out in under 5 min and was del. Used to be our go to breakfast spot but new prices force us not to return $3 for a cup of coffee ! Really ! So breakfast for two will cost you close to $30 with out a tip , was wondering why it was almost empty on a sat morning , feel sorry for the staff there which will suffer from lack of customers . What a cool little place! Don't freak out if you show up for breakfast and there's a line (there usually is from what I've seen); try to sit on the back porch. YUM! Service was good too, though I hate measly little coffee cups, but that's just me. The apple smoked bacon was delish, and make sure you get the country potatoes instead of the hashed browns. My friend got the asparagus and tarragon omlette and raved about it. Two others at the table got the chicken fried steak and it looked awesome. And YES, they accept credit cards now... If you are nostalgic for a small town diner feel from back in the 80"s, this is the place to come. As soon as you walk in, you feel comfortable. The menu is unpretentious and full of comfort food like open face turkey sandwich with brown gravy. I had lunch here with my 5 year old~ we got there at 2:30pm (the place closes at 3pm) so I was a little hesitant to stay knowing the waitress prob had already started cleaning up, looking forward to her shift being over. Nonetheless, the waitress was real friendly and welcomed us to stay. Then I ordered decaf coffee . . . she told me she had already emptied out the decaf coffee pot . . . so I was going to order something else but she told me she would be happy to brew me a fresh pot which she did. My son and I had a pleasant lunch there . . . since the food was comfort food with no hidden surprises, my son also happily ate his meal. I asked my son whether he thought this place was thumbs up or thumbs down and he gave it a two thumbs up. As we were getting ready to leave, the waitress even gave me a to go cup of the decaf coffee since she said she was just going to dump the pot anyway so why let it go to waste? Review for breakfast: The Dinner Bell Cafe tries to be better than the standard diner. You really want it to succeed, and sometimes it does, such as by making fresh sausage patties and frying them crispy, and with a better than average corned beef hash, and with a very good homemade salsa having just a bit of string. But then too often it falls below the mark, such as with lukewarm coffee and rubbery scrambled eggs. The ambiance, too, is very basic, and the seats in the boothes are too low (or you could say the tables are too high). If you are going to an event in the Sharlot Hall museum, it is conveniently right next door, but it is small and will be crowded if the event is a popular one. I guess I would say that if you are passing by, give it a try -- you might hit some of the particularly good items. I think I will come back for lunch someday. read more

If you take the side walk around back there are places to sit with a nice view of the creek and walking path. Service is HORRRIBLE. All the wait staff was rude and cold except for the bus boy. He at least smiled at us. When we asked if we could sit outside the waitress told us, "Sure if there is room," then started wiping down a table. I had to send my husband to ask if we could change our table. We also asked for tuna on my sons $4.50 grilled cheese and they wanted to charge us an extra $4.95 for a scoop of tuna. read more

I had a first for breakfasts in Prescott this morning. Normally, I leave pleasantly full and carrying a to-go box. This morning at Dinner Bell that wasn't the case. I ordered the French Toast combo: French toast, 1 egg and bacon. I splurged and got the cinnamon roll upgrade which was to come at no extra charge. I ordered an egg white for my egg option for which I paid an additional 99 cents. When my plate arrived, I was very underwhelmed. I had 2 skimpy halves of a sliced cinnamon roll, tge equivalent of 1 piece of bread.. My egg was not the egg whites I'd ordered, but an over hard, sort of scrambled egg. I sent the plate back to the kitchen to fix the egg white issue. When my plate returned, all the cook did was pick out the egg yolk and send the plate back as there were still traces of egg yolk attached to the egg white and only half the amount as I had before. Remember, I paid extra for my egg whites. I actually left the restaurant still hungry. Will be a while before I go back and definitely will be letting my friends know of this poor showing. read more

It was a perfect Saturday afternoon and we wanted some breakfast in an outdoor space. To get to the "patio" you have to wrap around the side of the main building. There we found a enclosed room with huge windows but still technically inside. They have a few true outside patio tables but they were taken. Oh well, huge windows with a view worked. Service was a bit hectic and slow but the food was good overall. Wouldn't say we were amazed but it was quaint and a nice meal. read more

Nightmare. Rude waitress who complained from the very start of how hard her shift was and said she'd like to leave right now. I started to have some empathy for her but she continued to give poor service and was visibly unhappy. Grumbling when another couple of customers walked in. Clearly put out and miserable. She made me feel completely unwelcome and my patronage was a huge inconvenience to her. I told her when she brought our food that I was a nurse who worked 12 hour night shifts and sometimes I had really tough shifts when I'd like to go home too, but you just have to "grin and bear it." She left our table in a huff and went to her 2 coworkers and told them mockingly what I said to her. It was in the small back room. I could hear them talking about me and what I said, then they all turned and looked at me. I told her to be a professional! This was a nightmare. 3 senior citizens out at their favorite restaurant for breakfast and basically not being welcome then being harassed. She tried to make up for it when she brought our check by saying "thank you for your service " and I said same to you. We left and I couldn't shake off this experience for the rest of the day. Going out to eat is a treat for me these days. My 86 year old mom was in town to visit and this was my choice to sit by the creek and have a nice experience. It was far from that though. read more

Ugh I ordered Roastbeef sandwich it was a dark black color tasted like cardboard the French Fries were made in Grease the obviously wasn't hot enough which made them soggy dripping in grease the waitress never asked why I only took a few bites out of the sandwich and left all the fries I want to think that it was just a bad day or a cook that was new or just didn't know what they were doing the restaurant has been there forever and it's a cute place I'd like to try again hopefully I won't get sick read more

Mom works in the front waiting tables, and Pop cooks for you in the kitchen! The staff is super friendly, and the food is worth going back for. Not huge, but made very well. They have not gotten "Too big for the britches" even with their regular customers. They treat all like family came by for breakfast. Give it a try........if you can find a seat!! read more

This morning I had a wonderful dining experience at The Dinner Bell. Ten of us showed up on their beautiful tree lined patio for breakfast. The servers very graciously moved tables and chairs together for us, smiling all the way. Then our server Laura efficiently and with such a friendly demeanor took our orders, kept refilling coffee and water, brought out our food in no time, and split the bill just as we asked. I have had better eggs benedict, but this was good, plus this was a cute little out of the way place that we have been meaning to go to for years. I work in the service industry so I completely understand bad days but I have never experienced this amount of disrespect than I did from multiple waitresses there. They were rude the minute we walked in and we could hear them talking bad about us for ordering waters instead of coffee or juice, when we got our food the waitress slammed my plate on the table and went and continued to talk badly about us. A gem if you are looking for plain good food. This is totally non-frills. I had pork chops, salad, veggies, and cottage cheese for $10, and it all decent if plain. There was a large group of young people having lunch, and I was impressed that all their dishes came out at the same time. A local friend suggested this place. It is slightly hidden on the side of the building. I think some call it the Creekside Cafe and Casa Alvarez. Apparently due to some ownership changes over the last few years. We stopped in for breakfast...I had a pancake combo (w/blueberries)...which included eggs, sausage & juice. Plenty to eat and pretty darn good. I definitely recommend you try this place! Parking is on the street and it can be a bit of a pain to find a spot...but is worth it. read more
