I'd do 3.5 stars here. This spot is always busy and easily runs out of things quickly. What I enjoy about this place is that you can buy single items and not whole orders of 4 like other places. Food is fine, good and quick. Custard buns have the perfect pineapple top but could be filled more. The egg tart is good but I found the crust a little salty. The chicken bun is good but the filling is a little small, the rice rolls are smooth, turnip cake is soggy, so if you are hoping for crispy edges/tops don't bother. Overall, friendly service and you'll get a good amount of food for low costs. read more

I came by here because I was in the area and have been wanting to try this dim sum place out. I usually go to Homestyle Dim Sum, and after trying Dim Sum King out, I prefer Homestyle Dim Sum. Parking: is always terrible in the ID, but with Dim Sum King being on the main road, I found it even harder to find parking for this place. I usually find decent parking at Homestyle/closer parking. What is nice about Dim Sum King is that you order things by the singles, so if you want 5 shrimp dumplings, you can order 5 shrimp dumplings, instead of in sets. Things I liked: - shrimp dumplings - fried meat football things - shumai I did not think the service was that great/unfriendly. We also got BBQ pork buns (bbq and steamed) and I thought both were 'just ok'. I was not the biggest fan of their egg tart, it just crumbled to the touch. The shrimp dumplings were my favorite. There's nothing quite like discovering your new favorite dim sum spot. Intense research was conducted prior to this visit, and the reviews certainly did it's job to draw me in. First impressions: The space was larger than I imagine, it was busy, but everything seemed to be structured. There is a piece of paper with a pencil for you to mark your order when you walk in. There was any sign indicating to do so but ordering is very straightforward. Everything was mostly already prepared, so this spot seems especially great if you are on the go. I ordered an assortment of Sweet White Cake, Baked BBQ Bun, Beef Rice Roll with Soy Sauce, Sui Mai, and Turnip Cake. The highlight for me was the Sui Mai OH MY..they were the thickest and freshest Sui Mai I've ever had. They're literally 2x the size of the ones I had in NY. I would come back for those alone! The Baked BBQ buns also did not disappoint. The bread had the perfect softness and the BBQ inside had just the right amount of sweetness. I will definitely be back here for my dim sum cravings. Not a bad place for cheap quick takeout dim sum by the slice. Place your online order in advance to make sure you get what you want otherwise they sell out. I recommend the steamed dim sum like har gao, baked buns (ridiculously good), chicken feet and sticky rice. PROS: Fantastic easy to find location, generally available parking, great prices and straight forward no frills menu (limited but that's a good thing, they offer a few things done very well and keep it manageable based on their capacity:size). Only a few confident loud and no nonsense women run the show, and I love it! I enjoy supporting women owned or operated restaurants, very important and necessary in this business. CONS: didn't like their fried stuff, was extremely greasy (fried meat ball). This happens when the frying oil is not at a optimal high temperature, very small size of har gao for the price, beef rice noodle was just okay. My biggest disappointment was the egg tart. Let's be clear, this is not an egg tart it's more of an overbaked too sweet eggy custard with sweet shortbread crust. Real egg tarts are made with flaky phillo dough with a light melt in your mouth filling and not overtly sweet. The combination of salty sweet filling with flaky pastry is what you can expect from Harbor City. I prefer Harbor City to dim sum king for egg tarts and rolled rice noodle. However, the taste was a bit approximate (e.g. the dan ta's crust tasted more like a graham cracker pie crust rather than the usual flaky layered lard crust). Yesterday was my first time coming here and I really enjoyed it! You write your order on little menus that are on tables in the front and hand it over to the ladies at the counter who will pack up the items. It was a little confusing on where the line started so I do wish there was a sign to let you know where to hand over the order and where to pick up/pay. A lady who was also ordering let us know it wasn't her first time there and she's still confused lol. The menu itself isn't very extensive compared to other dim sum places I been to, but I'm not surprised considering it's takeout dimsum. I really liked the siu mai, ha gow, and shrimp cheong fun. The rice wrapping was soooo soft and chewy and the size of each item was big. It was apparent that everything was freshly made and cooked to perfection. I never had fun gor before so we ordered to try it, but turns out it has celery inside! I don't like celery so it was a dud but I appreciated the large size of the dumpling. Of the baked items, I enjoyed the sponge cake and egg tart the most. The egg tart was very buttery and almost melts in the mouth. It had a shortbread crust. The sponge cake was very pillowy, soft, and so tall. We also ended up getting 2 chicken buns, which I think was a mistake because we didn't order that, and while I wasn't huge on the cabbage filling, the bun itself was soft and chewy. I didn't really like the filling for the steamed and baked char siu buns either (I thought it needed more flavor) but my boyfriend enjoyed it. Lastly, they had mango pudding in the fridge. The mango flavor was fresh, flavorful, and didn't taste artificial. For 4 siu mai, 4 ha gow, 2 fun gor, 1 order of cheong fun, 2 chicken buns, 1 steamed and 1 baked char siu bun, 2 egg tarts, 1 hot dog bun, 1 custard bun, 1 coconut bun, a mango pudding, 1 crispy football meat bun, and 1 sponge cake, the total came out to be almost $42. It was enough food for about 3-4 people so not bad. I can't wait to come back!! Family business that has been operating for a while to support the community. They've encountered some obstacles along the way such as having a car run into their building, which is why it's boarded up and looks a bit interesting, but they continue to operate nonetheless. I used to order frequently before COVID and had a fantastic experience during the Chinatown Food Walk. As many reviews note already, this is a la carte dim sum where you can order as little or as many pieces as you'd like. It's not high quality dim sum, but the value is insane, it's cheap, flexible, and accessible. There are tons of amazing dim sum places in Chinatown, but a la carte is a very unique experience with a lot of potential to benefit the community. I cannot stop raving about the a la carte. It doesn't affect me that much, but I see the benefits and accessibility. People can try new things without much risk which is awesome, but there's a bigger impact. Those who are struggling may pop in and order a nice bao or bun to ease their appetite. Donations to those struggling are actually usable here because the prices allow for change to be utilized effectively. It's because of this that I believe Dim Sum King deserves so much support as it helps the community, regardless of our situations. Craving dim sum? Satiates that craving. Wanting to try new things? Can do that without much food waste. Don't have much money? Can still order. The congee here is very popular and often sells out fast, so I'd recommend that alongside your order. Every dim sum item is close to what you'd expect at other restaurants, but maybe half a star less? Everyone is clumped in with each other and not 6 feet apart. This is only during rush hour. Everything is only good when you dip it with the sauces (soy sauce + chili oil). Chicken feet is a little off with flavor but still an 6/10. The rice rolls with shrimp seems to sell out really fast but the beef one isn't so bad. The beef rice roll only taste like rice rolls, you can't taste the beef at all. Just dip with the soy sauce and chili oil and you will be fine. Shrimp dumpling is the BEST! Overall, I find the quality to be perfectly reasonable for the price. Ha Gow is dainty, smaller, and flavorful, and hey, it's only $0.90 a piece. Egg tarts are the "cookie crust" style; the filling is velvety smooth and flavorful. Football is always a good choice, but I chose the vegetarian spring roll this time. Shui mai is always reliable too. I have eaten at DSK in the restaurant, but more commonly it's for take-out. This type of take-out focused dim sum business is very common in San Francisco, Vancouver, and Los Angeles where there are bigger Chinese/Asian population. I was very pleased when DSK opened many years ago with this business model. With COVID, it's currently all take-out only. They re-arranged their tables so it's a one-way walking path to order and to leave. If there's a line, you can fill out the piece of paper. If not, you can walk up and tell them what you want. I have a fondness for DSK, because they carry some of the lowest cost buns and baos that are a staple for the poorer elderly in Chinatown. A $0.75 plain steamed bun could be lunch. DSK provide a vital service for this hidden community. If you can, go and order "normal" items so they can continue to offer low cost items and support these elderlies. I have only ordered Dim Sum King through Uber eats and I just say it comes hot and fresh! I love how flavorful their dim sum is. I've ordered the egg tart which is nice, slightly sweet and very flaky crust! The shu mai is a thick boy and super deliciously juicy. The pan fried buns are soft on the outside and the meat filling is nice and juicy. The sticky rice was perfection. Nice and sticky loaded with filling. The chow mein was perfectly seasoned and super slurpable! I tried more items but I think you get the gist. I also like how you can order by the piece so you can try one of everything! A solid 3.5. This dim sum place is in my neighborhood - my best wishes for them as they close today due to the protests the night before that caused vandalism. Since the whole COVID-19 outbreak, Dim Sum King had closed down, then re-opened - now they have a nice path once you walk inside for maintaining physical distances between one another. You order from their order forms by checking and indicating the quantity. Then you bring up the form to the front and they fill your order. Shrimp dumplings are on the tinier side, while their pork shu mai are huge. They have the white sponge cake, which I crave from time to time. Unfortunately, they didn't have the pork and century egg congee when I tried to order it last time. Lame. Price is not bad and they charge for each piece as opposed to sets of 3/4 like other dim sum places. The quality is alright, but I definitely have had better. I found the siu mai , har gow and lotus leaf sticky rice to be pretty good but the char shu bao's filling lacked taste/heft and had a weak pink color than bold red. Came here after work with a coworker because it was the only dim sum area that was open at 7 am. Service was probably one of the worst. I'm not sure if we came at a bad time, but they treat you like you're a criminal waiting for their turn to get food. They have the attitude like they're the absolute Michelin star dim sum place in Seattle.... Which brings me to my next gripe. I'm from Southern California where we have a lot of really excellent cuisine from all parts of the world. Quite honestly this place just wasn't good to me at all. The Har Gao was too sticky in consistency, and lacking the flavor that most places deliver. My advice to the staff of this place is if you're going to deliver subpar dim sum, you could at least serve a better attitude. The one star for this review isn't only because I had to give 1 star, but because the only thing I did enjoy was the pound cake that they sell.
