I've been going to Dewar's for several years now. They are not short of disappointment..until today. Today we purchased 2 sundaes. One was and Black and Tan and the other a large chocolate with caramel and peanuts. There was obvious disparity and the chocolate sundae was lacking the caramel. They serve the same tasty desserts in a to-go cup, seemingly expecting you to run home to enjoy it. They do have booths if you'd prefer to eat in, but it's clear that this place was designed to get you moving quickly. They even have a drive-through. So while this location isn't quite the place you'd want to take a date for a memorable evening, like the other diner, it is a good place to go to satisfy your sweet-tooth. They offer a large selection of flavors and toppings. I wasn't able to compare exactly, but it certainly seems to have the same options as the main location in town. It's also the same top quality flavor and service. I appreciate that we have both options in town: one that focuses on setting and experience, and the other that focuses on food and speed. I typically would have given Dewar's a 5 star review. I have never had an issue with service, quality of product, or cleanliness. This time, however, the drive thru service was poor. I was ordering a half gallon of strawberry ice (which usually costs $12.50) for a graduation party tonight. Geena, the cashier, said they were out of half gallon Strawberry ice, but she could serve me 2 quarts, which would be the same amount of ice cream. However, it came out $24, nearly twice the price for the same amount. Before I could ask about the price difference, the cashier had already ran my card. When I did ask, the cashier sharply said, "it costs more because of the plastic, and we had to pack it. I don't make the prices," and handed me the bag. Because I had the graduation party to go to, it's whatever. You're better than this, Dewar's, and so is your staff. read more

We came here for the first time yesterday, I was excited to go after reading reviews and talking to neighbors. So we go through the drive thru during quarantine which is fine, the wait was maybe a total Of ten minutes from arriving, ordering and paying. Not bad at all. The girl at the window was very friendly and nice. The ice cream, we got two different Sundaes and a milkshake. I don't know if it's normal to put a sundae in drinking cup, the did. We received all three in cups you'd drink out of. It was mostly ice cream, super small amounts of toppings and the peanuts were gross they were basically crushed and powdered. It was weird. The vanilla ice cream wasn't very tasty at all. I actually had vanilla ice cram and moo creamery the day before. Way better! Anyway, not sure we'd come back here again when it wasn't even that great. My husband and I have loved Dewars ever since we were little. They carry an excellent selection of home made ice cream and chews. They have several locations in Bakersfield and the chews are famous outside of BAKERSFIELD!!! Our favorite is the Black and Red with marshmallow cream and hot fudge. Dewars even does birthday parties for kiddos. I have been to several at the Calloway location and it's great. They have a little game room with a small bounce house and after the kids get to play for a bit they serve a scoop of ice cream to all the guests. You get to order any flavor you want and one topping. I have had many great experience with Dewars and I will keep coming back. read more

The drive thru is awesome. Quick ordering, quick delivery at the window, in my opinion. I feel like it should take so much longer to make a banana split plus whatever everyone else in front of me is ordering. But I've never spent more than 5 mins waiting. And that's even an overestimate. It's just hella expensive. Yum! I forgot about this place cause of all their locations I don't live close to one. Weird huh? My favorite thing is a Black and White with crushed almonds. Dagnabbit Dewars!! The carelessness of your staff is so irritating! Every time I go through the drive through I get home to a bag full of ice cream. We used to be loyal fans, especially of the lower fat Peppermint Stick ice milk. And I know prices have risen for all food items recently. But, in 2021 a half gallon was $11.50. Last fall it was $13.50. Just went in today for a special treat of a 1/2 gallon, now is $15.50!! Seriously? We're done, unless out of town family come through. I can get Breyers at Vons for $6 or less if on a sale. And some store brands are less than that. Sorry Dewars, you lost a customer. Hope you don't price yourself out of business. The Dewars location is unique as it is the only one I have seen that has a drive through window. You enter the drive through on the South side of the building. The interior is decorated in the light pink and sea foam green so familiar in the classic Dewars soda fountain shops. The theme is large polka dots which appear both on the walls and suspended from the ceiling. This location has a much more modern feel than the downtown Dewars. The menu posted on the wall lists 23 ice cream flavors and all the classic Dewars combos, the Black & White, Black & Tan, Red & White, and Grandpa Jim's Banana Split. Dewars is also famous for their chews, taffy candies which are beloved favorites of Bakersfield residents. They cost $14.49 for 1 pound box which includes a mix almond, peppermint, caramel, peanut butter). My favorite flavor changes weekly, but I love them all. I decided on a single scoop of peanut butter fudge in a sugar cone and did not regret it. It was absolutely HUGE and only cost $1.99. Honestly, I'd have been satisfied with half that amount for the money. It is worth noting that the drive through window is open a full hour later than the store itself on weeknights. read more

Dewar's makes some of the best ice cream anywhere. My Mother n law swears that their Strawberry and Chocolate flavors are the best ever! I like this location on the corner of Ming Ave. and Buena Vista Rd. They even have a drive thru!! As compared to Dewar's other two locations in town, I am really happy about one thing. I can now see the ice cream flavors in advance!! Cannot do that at their other branches because the ice cream is not displayed very well if at all. My fave ice cream spot in Bakersfield. And it's all because of that marshmallow! Black and white, tan and white, red and white...anything white but my go-to is black and white. Hot fudge, marshmallow, nuts with vanilla and chocolate (but I always tend to swap that chocolate for coffee). They also have options for ice milk (as opposed to cream) but I can say I've actually never tried it. If I'm coming here, I'm going for the ice cream. Duh. First timers we were at this local business. Took us too long to come here! Loved the old photos of the founders on the walls that all tell a story on how this amazing place came to be so long ago. Eat in or out, lots of space. I liked how the kids' ice cream was in one section (to the right in another showcase, the dairy-free ice cream/sorbets all in another section beside that and the full fat guilty pleasures are on the far left. Friendly service for sure! We were able to try many different kinds of ice cream and was given advice on how to put it together in the right cup to save the most cash! I love that they have a coffee ice cream. It was very good, creamy. I liked the strawberry too. What I settled on was the chocolate brownie. WOW! They know how to do a good chocolate! No wonder everyone loves it here! Hubby got the Reese's. They do NOT skimp on the real peanut butter cups in this ice cream! Loaded! I tfounded he prices to be very reasonable. Esp. since 1 scoop really means 3 scoops per person! (no half scoops allowed) This location has a drive-thru so if you know what you want, you are all set! I watched as one employee male a milkshake for another customer. A lot of work goes into this! Will return! Update - I had to send a gift to Texas.. what the heck to get? Dewar's candy of course, exclusive to Bakersfield. My friend loved the assorted box and I also sent her the Wiki print out of what Dewar's is all about. I know Dewar's is an establishment...but keep mind that this is a Dewar's Express. The beauty of it is the drive-through. What a super idea, especially in the intense Bakersfield heat. You can keep cool in your car, pull out and order. The Soda Fountain Menu is pretty much the same as the original Dewar's in downtown. What is missing is the variety of chews as well as the gift area portion of items to buy. I've had the Black and White. It is amazing...vanilla and chocolate ice cream topped with hot fudge and whipped marshmallow topping. The Black and Gold is great if you are a peanut butter lover. I get it with the nuts on the side so they don't interrupt my ice cream bites. There are many positives: tons of parking available, and credit cards are accepted. The inside is clean and overall the workers are friendly. My major complaint is the way the sundaes are served. One worker was particularly helpful talking about the difference between ice milk and ice cream. The ice milks have less fatty cream and are a bit more "icy". I understand using a "to go" cup for the drive-thru portion since it keeps things neat. But, when I ate on site, they still served the Black and Gold in a to-go cup! So, the toppings (liquid peanut butter and marshmallow) were all on the chocolate scoop and by the time I got to the vanilla ice cream, it was naked. I'm docking one star because I think sundaes should be on a dish! It does not have be a glass dish but even a hot dog dish thing would work! read more

Dewars is a wonderful place, so I made it a point to take my BF who has never been. I was super excited to see there was an express so close to where we were, since it was already after 9pm. Since it was listed being open until 10pm I was stoked, only to get there to see the sign on the door says they close at 9pm. And the gal cleaning up front just shurgged her shoulders and gave me that "sorry, we're closed now" look. Since I am visiting from out of town, I didnt know the drive thru was still open...a fact that should be stated somewhere, or that gal should have told me we could use the drive thru. It wasn't until i drove past it and saw a line full of cars that we circled back. I'm glad we did, but it was still super frustrating. We got a black and gold and it was awesome. I also got a 1/4 bag of chews for my BF since he's never had them before. I'm sorry but they are almost $6 and you get like 8 peices of candy...not worth it. All in all, we will visit Dewars again, but probably not the express, unless we are in a rush. read more

I have to say, during this whole unfortunate Covid experience we are all experiencing, this specific location has definitely stepped up to the plate to make it the most enjoyable time off possible. I've been going here weekly since I was furloughed in March and throughout the uncertainty of the world currently, every employee at this location has had a smile on their face, extreme kindness and care every time I have come. I truly believe this is why the lines have been wrapped around the entire parking lot, but yet we all still wait in the long lines.. and trust me, it is worth it! Apart from the beyond great hospitality, obviously the ice cream is fantastic. It tastes amazing! And for the price you definitely can't beat it! I love the drive-thru. I am able to get great Dewars ice cream treats without having to get out of the car. I am a sucker for a simple chocolate shake that is made just the way I like it and my husband is way more adventurous and tries new things all the time.
