Dewars sundaes can't be beat, marshmallow topping is sublime, The ice cream itself is creamy and hearty. Line was long when we came in on a Sunday evening. We both got small sundaes and sat inside and enjoyed our treat. Service is fine and the inside and outside seating is great at this location. Prices have gone up so we don't come as often as we used to but it's nice to have every once in a while as a treat. read more

Got back into my car went and got in line gentleman walked in front of my car placed a cone and told me the car in front of me was the last customers of the day at 8:59. Even though this place is small, it's great. We really enjoy Dewar's and when we are near here, it's a great quick spot to pick up some of their yummy goodies. Ice cream selection was ok - very typical basic flavors without anything super trendy or new. For anyone looking for basic flavors, this shouldn't be an issue as they do have quite a bit of flavors to choose from. They ice cream was just OK too. It was a bit gummy/foamy for my liking, but it was for sure smooth and creamy. The price was kind of high for what it is. For the similar price, I think I would go to Sweet fix only because i'm all for trying new and interesting flavor combination. My favorite ice cream in Bakersfield!! The toffee nut flavor is so delicious especially if you had the marshmallow fluff on top. I also like their seasonal girl scout cookie flavors! Definitely a must try ice cream shop if you're ever in the area. They also have a drive thru service which makes it super convenient to get ice cream late at night. read more

When you are in need of a sweet fix, like very sweet, Dewar's is going to be your BFF. The best flavor by far (in my humble opinion) is their cookies and cream. It is really creamy and tasty and the cookie pieces are in every bite. I was influenced by other Yelpers to try the Black and White that comes in a large styrofoam cup, but it was way too much for me and the fam. Sure, it's a lot of ice cream but it's also pricier than getting a few scoops and it's just over the top sugary with the marshmallow fluff and the hot fudge. The shop is really small and there's this guy who was hanging out on the patio when we went. To put it bluntly, he seems menacing. He picks his nose and then yells at the staff behind the counter. As a customer, it was disgusting and off putting because he was touching things and spreading germs. Seems like maybe he is a regular customer based on his conversation with the counter staff. I understand that everyone is different and some don't know how to behave in public. But the staff should be cognizant that this will prevent others from wanting to spend money at their establishment. Also, they only have two dairy free options! So I took one of each home to sample. The watermelon ice is okay, but the strawberry tastes artificial. In my opinion, they aren't that good, just full of sugar. More and more people are lactose intolerant, so having a few better options would be great for business. read more

A family member was visiting from Europe, and this was her first time in an American style ice cream parlor. The employees were not busy and just stared at her uncomfortably while she was trying to decide which flavor to order, as if to rush her decision, instead of offering suggestions or being friendly--as has been my experience before. I've been going to the original location on Eye for many years. I get this is a "Dewar's Express" but this low level of customer service is unacceptable. Customers should be made to feel welcome and comfortable, and the staff should encourage a good experience--not rush you to make a hasty decision, especially when no one else is on the store. If this is how Dewars employees represent the store to visiting family and first time customers, we won't be going back to this location. ... Went through the drive through and a young man took our order. When we got up to the window to pay, I entered my tip amount and tapped my card on the card reader. He then turned the card reader to face away from me, tapped a bunch of buttons on it, and then asked me to use my card again, but faced the screen away from me. I asked to see the screen so I could verify the amount. He seemed annoyed, tapped some more buttons, and then faced the screen to me, which thankfully showed the correct amount (after all his button tapping) He was rude the rest of the interaction, seemed annoyed, and even joked with the other employees about us. I am a sucker for ice cream, and Dewar's has some of the best! Although I am impressed by the list of flavors, toppings, and wild combinations they offer, I am always going to be predictable and order the "Black and White" but sub in Coffee ice cream! Delicious! I would love to offer up a higher star count on this location because the ice cream itself is so perfect, but the drive thru experience hasn't been as good to me as the other locations. The long line for the drive thru is not so bad in and of itself, but I don't think I have gone through yet without having to go inside to correct something that I was sure should have been right in the bag. My nut allergy besties - please be aware that there are nuts prevalent in the place and I have had a lone peanut slip its way into my order, even after forewarning the staff of my allergy. On a Saturday night, Dewar's Express in the SW was a no-brainer to avoid the crowds at the other locations. What this Dewar's lacks in size, it makes up for in convenience. I'm almost certain the entire menu is available here minus the long waits for tables or counter space at the other spots. Here you order at the register and sit at one of the 6-8 tables inside, and there's patio space that's a great option the warmer months. The service is no-frills: You place your order and walk 5 feet to pick it up. For those who don't need the Dewar's old-timey soda and ice cream fountain experience (e.g. locals who've been there/done that since childhood), Express lets you enjoy all the flavors and favorites but on your timeline. They even have a drive-thru. Plus, my family used this a good time to pick up some Chew's - again without having to grab a ticket and wait. This place lives up to its name for sure. read more

On a sweltering day this is an Oasis to be in. Always nice and cool. The place is always clean and the ice cream is exceptional! The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is the prices. I only visit every couple of years because they have that implied tip on the payment kiosk and the prices are high enough to begin with. For my daughter to get two scoops in a cup and a milkshake for myself with tip is almost $30, again the product is top notch but I just can't justify paying that much for a little ice cream. read more

I don't know if the owners retired and kids have it now and got greedy, but the portion sizes have shrunk considerably, the prices have increased significantly, and the quality has degraded in their ice cream. I ordered a tan and white, and the cup was MUCH smaller. The ice cream was light and fluffy and melted super quick. I'm a huge fan of old fashioned ice cream and prefer it over grocery store ice cream on any given day. I am in love with their Black and White, which is basically a hot fudge sundae with a scoop of vanilla ice cream at the bottom, hot fudge in the middle, and a scoop of chocolate ice cream on top, finished off with marshmallow cream on top and your choice of bites (I prefer walnuts). It's oh-so-yummy good, and I swear, you'd be addicted to it. I'll forewarn you though, that if you're counting calories, this will totally kill you. This sundae has got about 2600 calories. But if I were you, I'd make your cheat day count. Also, the prices have gone up in the past few years. So the Black and White I was used to paying at $5.35, is now $8.65. A half gallon of ice cream is also about $14. So I'd say, this is a great place if you want to spoil yourself with a yummy treat every few months or so. My boyfriend loved it but I wanted to take him to the downtown location we didn't get a chance. It's not some thing we eat all the time really like once a year. I recently came to Dewar's Express drive-through with my cousin on a late night dessert run for a chill sesh we were having with some friends. While the line was long, I personally felt that it moved pretty quickly, considering the amount of work being done. (As anyone who has ever worked in any ice cream shop can attest, scooping cold items for hours on end is rather physically challenging.) Even though I was already full before I got here, I felt compelled to order a scoop of lemon chip ice milk with gummy bears. My cousin ordered an array of other items, including a banana split, a black and tan, and several other sundaes. Right when the cashier told my cousin the total, she happened to be looking at something shocking on her phone. "Aw, man!" She exclaimed. "No, sorry, I was looking at my phone, that's fine." Maybe you had to be there, but we were cracking up. I think the total was close to $50. Anyway, my lemon ice milk was delicious. Kind of like a less-creamy, icier gelato, but just as sweet, and more refreshing. I had a few bites of my cousin's sundae, and it was out of this world. I think it was called a black and brown, or a black and white? Which leads me to my one and only criticism of Dewar's, which is that their menu is not easily accessible online. Prices got bigger but portion sizes are way smaller and customer service does not match the price you pay. We spent around $50 for a family of 4 and when we got home noticed the extra toppings that are pretty expensive were not added. I called to let them know and they told me to go back but it was already 10pm so I told them it was too late to drive back. So they told me to come back another day for free toppings‍ I asked if they would give me an ice cream and they said, "no" just the topping. I just explained that when we are spending so much money good customer service would be to offer me a free ice cream to make it worth my drive. We went back and forth and I asked to speak to the manager and he said she was on break. At that point since I wasn't happy with the resolution I did ask the shift manager Alex who made the final decision and he said the manager Abby. I was confused because he wouldn't let me talk to her stating she was on break but then he contradicted himself saying she was the one who made the call. At that point I just asked if he could credit my card what I paid for the toppings and he said yes. I don't know why that wasn't just offered to me from the beginning instead of just telling me to go back another day for a free topping. It wasn't until I asked for the managers name and mentioned I would be leaving a review that he muffled the phone and then suddenly said the manager was available to speak to me. I know it's not fun to address issues as a manager but that's a part of the job. At that point I was over it and just asked for them to refund me for my toppings and I was done. I just feel when you spend so much you should receive quality customer service. This is not what we experienced and I'm super disappointed. They are just too expensive now. Loved Dewars my whole life, but they are pricing themselves out of my life. The to go drive through is interesting but even living close by, the ice cream melts too much to be really enjoyable when I get it home. At the overpriced level it is, I get really upset when I get home with melted ice cream. These days, I only go there if out-of-town family ask to go, or to send chews to the same folks. I've really fallen out of love. The fun experience that once was a trip to Dewars has become more like a visit to an assembly line where the staff aren't particularly happy to see me, the product is overpriced, and I don't feel it was a fun experience. You just can't go wrong!! We headed over after watching a wonderful musical at BCHS, and we definitely made the right decision. The staff was great. It was Maison's birthday and he was taking orders. The couple in front of us asked a million questions and he handled it all with such grace and as if there weren't 15 people in line behind them and 25 cars in the drive-thru (and there really was).
