Walked up to the counter last night (2-27-26) with my wife and helped ourselves to the menus. They were moderately busy last night, but we were able to find a few open stools at the counter. Other patrons waiting for their orders already had been served old water. Several minutes went by and none of the three employees walking back and forth bothered to greet us, say "We'll be with you in a moment", or even make eye contact. I was not in the mood to stand up and raise my hand for attention. I shouldn't have to ask for basic service from a supposedly established business and when it wasn't that busy, or should I have? The Original Dewar's Candy Shop in Downtown Bakersfield is home to some of the best ice cream California has ever seen. It's simple, but special. This location is small with a 50's style long soda fountain counter. While it's giving all the retro feels, I do much prefer their other locations because they are a bit more spacious and better when you have more than 2 people. At this location, you're all stuck in a long line down the corner or trying to fight for the few table seats they have. The counters are tough to sit on though! The seats are bolted in and don't move, so you either fit or you don't! Space limitations aside, their ice cream is the best. I have so many go to flavors because there are just so many good ones. I like the cookies and cream and birthday cake, but occasionally I'll go chocolate brownie, mint chip or strawberry cheesecake. On this occasion, they were featuring the cherry chip that was a fun departure from their usual menu. Dewar's Ice Cream is the best. I came across this place on a TikTok when in the area and knew I had to try it. You can either order for dine-in or to go. There is limited seating, but it is super cute inside. We went in a group and were still able to snag some seats even though it was busy. I tried their s'more brownie, which was super delicious. Other people in our group got ice cream and milkshakes. To be honest, I only come to this location for 2 things , that is the vanilla or strawberry ice milk and the peanut chews that they sell by the pound. Every time I've visited this location, the staff are really friendly and quick to come to the counter. No matter how busy they are doing other things. The Vanilla Ice milk reminds me of my East Coast lifestyle when we used to take the second snow of the winter to make snow cream instead of having ice cream, because we were too poor or just thought it was too expensive. Overall, every location that we go to is a great experience. The fact that they have a full soda bar in every location I've been to, makes it easy to get all of the treats you're looking for. Dewars Candy is a staple and we always have to stop in when we are in town. This was my first time to this particular location and to be honest it wasn't my favorite but that's because it's so much smaller than the one we usually go to. After waiting for 10 minutes without a single word of contact or any attempt at service, we decided to walk out. It was incredibly disappointing. This was, without question, the worst customer service experience I've ever had. Management should be ashamed that their staff provides such a low standard of basic customer service. I have tried many options here but my go to is the black and white or when I'm sharing with my son we like to get George's special. Stopped by for dessert with my family. My son and I purchased three bouncy balls from the toy machine, and were then accused of stealing another childs bouncy ball that was dropped. The father of the other child insisted that we did not take the ball, but the employee Joey still found it necessary to come to our table and acuse us. My mom was born and raised in Bakersfield and spent her Sunday afternoons at the original Dewar's after church. She and my dad relocated decades ago, but there's never been a shortage of Dewar's stories. Well today was my turn! In town for business and decided to stop by for a strawberry shake. I felt like I had stepped back in time; the beautiful nostalgia and coziness was special. I was craving chocolate covered strawberries so a chocolate fudge/strawberry shake was my cold, creamy, yummy substitution. Ms. Cindy took my order and I shared why I stopped by. She asked if my mom still lived in town (I thought that was so nice of her). Cindy also told me how to take ice cream home to my mom (we live up North) in the future. My colleague ordered a cookies and cream shake and we both thoroughly enjoyed them. I got a small bag of chews to enjoy back home. Thanks so much for the info and your kindness, Cindy. This place was so cute! It was super nostalgic like you stepped back into a 1950's soda fountain/ice cream shop. Complete with checkered floor tile and a bar with cute twirly pink chairs where you have a seat and these sweet ice cream hops make you old fashioned sundaes, shakes and banana splits in glass serving dishes. Our ice cream bar tender was Stephanie and she was sweet and she let us try the vanilla ice milk vs ice cream to see which we preferred. My hubs loves these old school ice cream places, whereas I usually prefer new places that offer some sort of different flavors or experience but this place was so old school retro that nobody else makes them like this and therefore qualifies as being different as well, in a classic way that is missing from regular ice cream shops. My hubs got the traditional banana split which was probably easily splittable between the 3 of us but he is greedy and doesn't like to share. My daughter got the red and white shake, also probably made for sharing but nope, not this girl, she takes after her dad. She really loved the marshmallow cream on it but def couldn't finish it. I got a small sundae with Vanilla ice milk (gelato?) and Orange sherbet topped with pineapple and rainbow sprinkles. Also shareable but wasn't. It was really good and my choice was pretty good and I highly recommend this flavor concoction. Small is very large and a child's size probably would've been good but I wanted the 2 different flavors. Ok maybe I am also a greedy non sharer?!? I was in the mood for something light and simple which was their sundae which I got Cookie Dough with fudge and almonds no whipped cream. The dude ended up getting a Reese milkshake. We were handed a pager which was a short wait and our order was up. The servings are so huge but I was a champ and finished it. The ice cream is so light and delicious not too sweet and addictive for sure. They also serve food as well along with sweet treat and had a whole candy shop. The place is pretty cute , clean and organized. Probably one of the best ice creams in Central California in my opinion. We were very satisfied with our visited and cannot wait to come back and try more flavors and options.
