Service excellent- love Holly! They are lucky to have her! Hostesses just ok - maybe there were 2? One was kind of rude when we'd moved tables after a busser said it was ok and she made us move back to our original home able saying that specific table was reserved outdoors. We were told upon making the reservations several weeks before that outdoor seating could just be noted not guaranteed. So why were we told this?! Embarrassing for our family- very bad form. Menu is nice but food seems to be more Bass Pro - trying go to appeal to the mainstream Midwest. Prices are on the high side for this kind of some of their food (cornbread, fried stuffed chicken etc.); trout was very good though green beans a bit boring. Cocktails are nothing interesting- sangria was sweet and hit wine- like. Atmosphere on the outside front is beautiful, pretty back deck, inside seemed lacking airflow/ warm and a little dirty (windows and doors were smudgy). We hate at Buzzard's Bar, which is the lower "less classy" part of Devil's Pool Restaurant. The restaurant was nice, and the service was great. I felt the menu was a little sparse, but everyone found something they liked so I can't really complain. My only complaint about the atmosphere was it was hot and needed some air circulation. They made my wife a special salad that wasn't on the menu, and she loved it. I got their chicken liver appetizer which was big enough for a meal. My mom got their small bowl of potato soup and their pork sliders. The bowl was big enough to fill her up, so she could only eat one slider but their BBQ sauce had "something spicy" in it which she didn't care for so she wasn't too disappointed to not eat the other two. My son got their catfish and was very pleased with it. My daughter got their tater tots and they came out very crispy with a delicious cheese sauce. Overall, a great meal! And it ended with a singer who was funny and engaging with everyone at the restaurant. read more

Veggies were boiled. I expected better for our first night at the lodge. It was only an ominous warning of the food we've experienced thus far. I canceled our reservation at Osage because of the disappointing lack of quality and the exaggerated pricing of our meals these last three days. Step it up a bit, food wise Johnny. We ate at Devils Pool last night ambiance fit the area. We both ordered cocktails pre-dinner and asked to order when we were close to finishing our cocktails so we were not rushed, which was fine, cocktails were good. Ordered wine with dinner and we both ordered side salads. The biscuits and flat bread came, ate the flat bread while waiting, side salads arrived, salads were good, but mine with the blueberry's and walnuts had a big weird clump of mushy blueberry stuff in it which I pushed aside. Then we waited and waited. Finally I asked another waitress to ask our waitress where our wine and dinner was. Two tables seated way after us already had their food and were leaving? Wine arrived with apologies and then finally the food. The wine was good, the Prime Rib was good. I ordered a half a rack of ribs and unfortunately the ribs which were piled high with this very spicy jalapeño onion stuff which I pushed aside, the ribs were so salty I couldn't eat them. And I have a medical condition where I'm on a high salt diet, lucky me, but I couldn't even eat them, way, way too salty. It's like the salt shaker fell in the BBQ sauce. Anyway, for me, coleslaw was sub par, why are chefs always trying to reinvent the wheel. Just make a normal coleslaw. The fries, I did not taste the garlic (truffle fries would have been much better) and the cheesy biscuit tasted like fish? So all in all the prime rib was good, ribs for me a disappointment. Our waitress did comp the salads for the food delay. I think they lost our order. I would try this restaurant again, just not the ribs. I'm hoping it was just a bad batch of BBQ sauce. read more

This restaurant is horrible. We went for breakfast. The eggs were fine but the potatoes had been sitting for a LONG time and were cold and shriveled up and dry. The sausage patty was dry and had no flavor. The cinnamon raisin toast...I wouldn't even feed it to the birds. Dry and tasteless. The pancakes were so underdone that they were still wet in the middle. We brought this to the attention of our server. He asked if we wanted anything else - we didn't. He then brought us a check with everything that we didn't eat on it. Wow. Way to stand by your terrible product, Big Cedar. read more

We get the breakfast buffet there every year on Black Friday. The buffet is exceptional, offering something for everyone. A delightful display of pastry, fruit, yogurt along with waffles, scrambled eggs, breakfast meats, biscuits and gravy, and more. There is an omelet bar that is very popular. They have always been accommodating of our large party and we've enjoyed having our post-Thanksgiving breakfast there for several years. The wait staff is quick to refill drinks, friendly and helpful. read more

Devil's Pool had an online menu for breakfast with a variety of choices and prices. On arrival with 2 adults and 2 14 year old and 2 13 year olds, we find the website at a big, upscale resort has not been updated. Only a tired buffet at $22 a head is offered. We are starving but wanted to stay in the resort. We are at Uncle Buck's waiting for 11:00 lunch and 12:00 go carts open. DP had 3 tables occupied at 10:00 AM, a clue that guests want better options for breakfast. read more

Great Sunday brunch option on property, but you will definitely need to call ahead and get a reservation to make sure you get a spot. I personally would love it if the brunch ran later, but understand that most people coming here probably eat a little earlier than I like to. I like that the Sunday Brunch has a lot of options, from an omlette bar to fresh fruit and pastries, and I think they do a good job of re-stocking regularly. As a vegetarian, it can be a bit tough to find substantial options, but the pastries and omlettes help make up for this, although I'm sad the gravy has the sausage already in it :( Overall, this is a great place for a nice family dinner or brunch and I would definitely suggest heading here as part of your Big Cedar Lodge experience! read more

Lovely location. Entrees were great but regret the app/dessert choices. Didn't care for the cheese/veg/ham/hummus appetizer. "White bean" hummus just isn't a good idea. The service was very good. The food was terrible. Our party of 4 got 3 different meals including prime rib, ribs, and chicken. All 3 were bad. The mashed potatoes were the worst we'd ever had. They were stiff as a board and tasteless. The ribs were dry, the chicken was blah, and the prime rib was fatty, grissly, and the worst we've ever had. Even the premeal bread, which I suppose was supposed to be like Red Lobster's cheddar rolls, was not. It was a special occasion and total disappointment. Prime rib arrived without Aus jus, horseradish, and steak knives. Got those 10 minutes later. Glass of wine arrived at end of meal. Never cleared table of appetizer or any dishes. After we got our check, Server disappeared for a long period of time with our cards. Spoke with the manager to track her down, and he was completely indifferent. (One of our party members said she ran into her in the bathroom while she should've been running our cards) Final bonus while waiting for shuttle to return to our rooms another patron got in a fight with host and slammed out of the door, yelled racial slurs, got in car and fishtailed out of the parking lot and shot off about 5 gunshots. read more

The only reason I would ever come back here is for the amazing corn bread. My ribs were dry and couldn't hardly eat them. Country fried chicken was bland. My husband ordered the catfish and he said the little place we stopped at in Springfield was 100X better. The kids meal chicken tenders was overcooked and dry. The waitress had recommended the blackened striploin fondue so we gave it a try. The meat was very tough and hard to chew. Overall it was a big disappointment. After ordering the 10oz Prime Rib Steak I realized that it was the most expensive combination of fat and gristle I had ever purchased. It was supposed to be our 50th anniversary dinner. My wife looked at me and she looked heartbroken for me since I didn't want to make a public complaint. The good folks sitting at the table next to us gently had the waiter return the same dish because of the gristle which the waitress arguably removed. $33.00 piece of gristle which took me exactly an hour to cut and try to find a reasonable morsel . So you arrive around 6 pm and are hungry from the drive and just want to unwind and have a beverage. Why the heck not try a place with a name like this? Our server, Amanda, was so cool. It was slow and she was super nice and full of spunk. I like to drink, so I had a tough choice of what to order. I ended up going with a Sam Adams. She replied with "Would you like a glass" and I replied with "I know in classy establishments you should do so, but I just want to drink from the bottle" she replied with "Do you see the decor around you? In a place like this, it is ok to drink from the bottle" Score one for Amanda. One of the specials they had was Buttermilk Fried Chicken, with seasoned carrots and mashed potatoes. It sounded good so both my friend and I ordered the same thing. While waiting for our food and enjoying the decor, Amanda comes out with a basket of cheesy garlic biscuits and butter. They were good and hit the spot, but a little bland. That is all good. Our food came out and the portions were huge. We had a whole chicken on there. Ok, not really, but we had quite a bit. I ended up eating a breast and the carrots and mashed potatoes. We ended up taking the rest back to the room with us. While I did enjoy their food, their prices are little on the higher end. Devil's Pool is located on the grounds of Big Cedar Lodge and we were eager to try it as we had heard, and seen, great reviews about it. Since we were staying on the grounds, we called ahead and they put us on the top of the waiting list and were seated within 5 minutes of arriving. Our waitress was new, it was her first week on the job, and we could tell she wasn't too knowledgeable but we worked with it. It was very weird to see her by herself, usually trainees are with someone for the first week. We loved the restaurant but because of the following, this is why its not getting 5 stars: The menu isn't big but it has a good selection. We made our orders (I got the nachos, my husband got soup) we noticed that people around us were being served burgers, fries, etc, which were not on the menu we had gotten. We finally asked the waitress about it, and with her being new she had to inquire herself, and we found out that it was the bar menu and it should have been offered to us. My husband requested to see it and realized it looked more to his liking than the original and luckily was able to change his order. Food came, nice and hot, and we all ate it up. Then came time for the bill. For some reason we were charged $10 more than what our bill added up to be while my parents paying their own tab did not. We never got a straight answer on why and it got to be a mess because we asked 2 people and got 2 different stories - one about it being the tip in case we didn't tip. So we waited a few days and it ended up showing correctly on our CC statement but very weird on why our bill got it and the other did not. For this being our first time at Big Cedar, it was a great experience. I hope that the trainees get a bit more training before set out on their own so hopefully the above doesn't happen again. read more
