Back after a short hiatus, I haven't been eating as many new meals, just bookmarking future ones but I went to DanDan again recently and it was one of the best dining experiences I've had in my life.
Order consisted of:
Egg Rolls
Chicken Wings
Salt and Pepper Squid
Tom Kha Soup
Short Rib and Foie Gras Potstickers
Beef Chow Fun
Duck Service
Laotian Fish Fry
Happy Chicken
Szechuan Green Beans
General Tso's Cauliflower
In an attempt to keep this review a pages shorter than War & Peace, I'll say that: Beef Chow Fun is the best in beef Chow Fun in Milwaukee, Happy Chicken is still a consistent flavor fantasy, and the General Tso's Cauliflower is still better than your favorite general Tso's chicken.
My go to at any Chinese restaurant is the Egg Rolls, and for some reason I've never had them at DanDan, but I got to try them with a group finally and they were phenomenal. As a sweet and sour junkie, I'll say that they do it perfectly. It's not some abstract overly sweet sauce, it's perfectly balanced, to me it tastes like all of the best parts of the packets of sweet and sour I grew up with.
The Chicken Wings were also very good. I'd say that DanDan is up there in terms of the best chicken wings in the city. I feel like it's impossible to dislike the seasoning on these wings.
At the request of my 10 year old cousin with a fascination with ASMR, we got the Squid. Which again I loved. My girlfriend occasionally likes to get the salt and pepper shrimp from Fortune (which I think is like just meh) but the squid here is perfectly crunchy, perfectly tender, perfectly seasoned.
Tom Kha Soup is one my girlfriend's favorite things to eat at DanDan. At first when we tried it a few visits ago I was like "hmm. Okay. This is solid" but I'm so glad she wanted to get it again this time. It was almost velvety in texture, it was delicious.
Short Rib and Foie Gras Potstickers ended up being more a game time decision looking back on it, I'm not sure it was absolutely necessary but it definitely put points on the board so we must give credit. I liked them a lot, I think when I was ordering I kinda was just running down the page of what sounded good and ordered them. Everyone enjoyed them.
The Duck Service at DanDan is a three course duck, a Soup, a traditional Peking style, and then in a Chow Fun.
-The Soup course was absolutely delicious, it tasted like chicken noodle soup with a much deeper flavor, it's the only Soup I've ever had that could stand next to my mother's chicken and dumpling.
-My newest obsession, the crispy skin, the hoisin sauce, the scallion pancake, I hope to one day sit and indulge in an all you can eat DanDan Peking duck.
-The Chow Fun was also really great. A good addition to everything else we ordered.
I've been trying to do more fish at Asian restaurants, particularly Thai and Chinese. The idea of sweet and sour fish arouses my taste buds and the Laotian Fish Fry didn't disappoint in the slightest. If you have a fish lover at your table, do them a favor.
Szechuan Green Beans were an attempt to healthy up the copious amounts of fatty foods we had, they were a table favorite.
All in all a great experience. I would highly recommend anyone who's a fan of spicy or sweet and sour or if you have loved ones in town this is a perfect place for a small group. There was six of us and we left with more leftovers than I wanted but that just means the experience is prolonged which is also great. read more
