A happy accident led my husband and I to DanDan, and I'm so glad it did! Were it not for the so annoying construction immediately surrounding Milwaukee Public Market that prohibited us from finding a parking spot one night, thereby prohibiting us from our intended dinner destination, I would not have had the need to find a nearby stand in for the night which led us via Yelp to DanDan. I guess this is the first time I've ever been grateful for construction!
But grateful I am, as DanDan was a near perfect little gem from the start.
Easy lot parking- hallelujah! (It's shared with an office building, so after 5 it's easier. There's also street parking.)
Walked in with no wait, seated right away!
Cool, relaxed and yet still energetic atmosphere.
The servers were patient and helpful with my questions, and worked as a team throughout the evening so that we never wanted for anything. I'm vegan so I did know they had options here for me, and that's always half the battle for me. For my appetizer, I had the most delicious veggie momo (dumplings) that were delicate and plump and full of flavor, and complimented by an even more flavorful dipping sauce. And from the moment I saw General Tso's Cauliflower on the menu, I was a happy camper. It did not disappoint. I'm generally a girl who prefers my veggies over cooked, a little softer than is recommended. I don't know why, and I know it's not ideal to deliver the most nutrition. However, despite my preference, that wouldn't work for this dish anyway, but I can appreciate so much how perfect their technique is on the cooking of the cauliflower and its batter. Cauliflower was firm but not crunchy, soft but not mushy, with a thick perfectly executed batter with crispy edges, and of course smothered in a mildly spicy General Tso sauce. Served with steamed rice, the portion was appropriate (though I could eat double that deliciousness) and just insanely tasty. I was thrilled!
My husband also enjoyed his pork egg rolls, and Mongolian beef entree though he did mention it was overly salty, which didn't surprise me much as that is often my experience generally speaking in regard to Mongolian sauce at any restaurant. Additionally, I ordered jasmine tea for $5 and it came out in a pretty double serving teapot and automatically with a side of probably local honey, which I would have omitted had I known.
The prices are moderately higher than I'm comfortable with by maybe a couple bucks each entree ($14 for mine) or app ($10), not terrible, I know, and because I enjoyed everything so much, was privy to vegan options, with excellent service and atmosphere, I don't mind the price point too much. The modern and cool Asian fusion aesthetic utilizing exposed brick and wood elements made for a vibrant and fun dining experience. I really recommend this restaurant, and just for fun, visit their website and read their about us/history page which I found really cute and written with whimsy. Oh, and you must take a trip to the bathroom! Lol Weird suggestion, I know, but they've recently installed hanging red and dramatically lit umbrellas lining the hallway. Fabulous! So, go; bask in the large parking lot, savor in the flavors, and take a trip to tinkle town. read more
