Overall - nice but severely overpriced bakery Get: the country bread (can also get 1/2 loaf which is amazing) Cons: the prices are truly astronomical - $11 for 1 chocolate almond croissant (more expensive than the Ritz in Paris and certainly more expensive than comparable croissants) I got the chocolate almond croissant, plain croissant (for a benchmark), tomato galette, and 1/2 load of country bread. Overall impression - the bread is a reasonable price for artisanal bread (~$12 for entire loaf). The croissants are very overpriced - they were nice croissants but I've certainly had better in the US and in France for nearly half the price. The almond filling is very much a gelatinous almond filling as opposed to a delightful almond crème - I would say half of bakeries opt for this marzipan or jelly style filling but I think a creme-based filling elevates the pastry (but don't get me wrong - I love marzipan in many other desserts). The plain croissant was nice. The tomato galette had a heavenly crust!!! I added a few red pepper flakes that I think added to the flavor - very nice. Apparently they've got some of the best croissants in town. Rightly so! While they serve non-croissant stuff, a lot of the baked goods are different croissant options. They're large too! Although, not heavy at all. Pretty easy to eat one yourself. I got the ham and cheese croissant, a chocolate cookie, another croissant with cream and strawberry on it. All very delicious! I will add that it's a bit pricey. I get it though. Croissants are a piece of work. Not easy to make. They seem popular! A line formed behind me while I waited to order. The staff is super nice. A fresh warm loaf of olive polenta bread to start the day is something I didn't know I needed in life. Now I know too much. I had high expectations with all the rave reviews. This really did live up to the hype. I also expected high prices - that also lived up to the hype lol. 4 items for $44. However, I need every single one of these baked goods again soon. Next month! You walk in and it's a small space -- order at the counter. There is usually a line I've heard and had a handful of people ahead of me when I arrived at 8:15 am on a Friday. Line moves quickly though. Everything is to go. It's hard to describe how fresh everything tastes. Like you slept in on a Saturday morning and are waking up to fresh pastries cooked by grandma. But instead it's Dan the Baker & team, and you can feel and taste just as much passion and care vs a grandma - if not more. The olive polenta bread was steaming as I cut into into it (see last frame). It doesn't get fresher than that. Salty and savory goodness. My friends recommended the cruffin which is a cross between a croissant and a muffin (more like a croissant). This was unique. I got the pumpkin cheesecake which is a limited flavor and this was thanksgiving dessert in a breakfast bite. I was taken to the feeling when you're so full from all of the brown/tan colored thanksgiving foods, but you can't skip pumpkin pie or cake. I've been to Dan the Baker several times, and while it enjoys a reputation of having some of the best bread and pastries in the city, I always feel a little confused when I leave. There is not really an ambiance, as everything is take out. However, I do like that they offer a plastic freezer bag for your bread, as it is the most expensive loaf in the city and letting it go stale would be an actual crime against your finances. Honestly, the price is part of the allure. They are luxury bread in the city of Columbus, designer label baked goods. There is often a line of excited folks looking into the display case, met by friendly staff. My most recent visit I picked at a cardamom knot and an almond croissant in the car, both were quite good. The cashier gave us a complimentary chocolate rye cookie after finding out we were visiting from Chicago. The gesture made our day! Great products but definitely a once in a blue moon treat for me. 3 items came out to over $30. This past weekend I got a Ham & Gruyère croissant, the cardamom bun, & the raspberry vanilla cruffin. The cruffin & the knot were out of this world. I would eat a thousand of those cruffins in every possible flavor if I could. I'd love to be able to try it all but it's just so expensive. As a baker, I understand & appreciate the craft totally. It's all worth the price no doubt. Just not something I could buy regularly unfortunately but man is it all good. Staff is friendly. The croissant itself was a bit chewy though. The savory croissant was notably more flaky and buttery than the sweet one. It's a bit expensive...actually, one of the most priciest pastries I've ever seen, and I live in Chicago/lived in NYC. I am guessing it's because the ingredients are super high quality. There is no seating, but I heard they used to have a toast bar pre-pandemic. Since there are many coffee shops nearby, it was easy to find a second location to chow down on our goods. Got a couple beautiful pastries from Dan the Baker today: the morning bun came highly recommended and let me tell you - this thing does not disappoint. It's the right amount of flakiness on the outside and packed with warm cinnamon on the inside. I also got their ham and gruyere croissant as well and it was amazing AND massive. What more could you ask for? Also got the sourdough, which I have yet to try, but it smells amazing and my cat tried to take a swipe at it too so it must be great. They also gave me an extra plastic bag and reheating instructions for the bread as well! read more

I love love the breads and pastries, genius! The quality is more than wonderful but I still think the prices are too high, super high I will say. To pay one wonderful pastry almost $14 or one bread $15 is crazy in my opinion. Last week I bought an organic 100% whole grain wonderful sourdough bread at The Mill in San Francisco for $9 (just to compare). One of my all time favorite bakeries! I learned of this place from going to the Clintonville farmer's market years ago and have been to their Toast Bar many times since...never disappointed. The bread is fresh and rich in depth of flavor and the pastries are incredible. Went again this morning (around 10am) and there was a wait outside the door. There is just one employee inside and they're only open Friday-Sunday 8am-2pm so the line makes sense! It was cold out but the line moved quickly enough. Got some black mountain bread, a cinnamon morning bun, and raspberry vanilla bean cruffin. The black mountain is always a favorite but you can't go wrong with any of their breads. Why don't I frequent here more!? This is my second time going to Dan the Baker. There's no indoor seating, so it's a quick stand-in-line and order type of deal.... but beware of their limited hours before going. And it's hard to find... it's located off a side street in an industrial building I think. The pastries are so flavorful and satisfying! We enjoyed the soft, flaky, buttery layers in all three treats we got -- the ham/Gruyère croissant, cinnamon sugar muffin and plain croissant. Each one was split amongst two people. This gem of a place is tucked away behind Dublin Road and can be a bit hard to find if you are just going by street signs but it is worth the extra effort to find! They have great covid precautions and their bread is AMAZING. It is on the higher end of pricing when it comes to bread ( $7 for a baguette). I got a country loaf and it was baked to perfection. Good but very pricey. Also only open Thurs-Sun. Peach danish had little flavor, maybe the peaches were not quite ripe. We were most excited to try this yet it turned out to be our least favorite. Sourdough is not sour like true sourdough, but still has good flavor. It doesn't taste like sourdough bread at all but is good. The cruffin must be tried - a knock off NYC Domonique Ansel's cronut. My husband and I both ordered breakfast (avocado toast with scrambled egg for me, ham and cheese tartine for him) and we also got coffee. I ordered an oat milk latte and he got the cold brew toddy. Overall, everything was good. The price is a little higher than I would typically pay for a croissant, cruffin (croissant/muffin combo) or bagel, but it's worth the cost. This place is def off the beaten path but so worth it! The seating area inside is small and they stock their pastries first come first serve. Luckily we arrived early, were able to sit down, and all of their pastries were in stock! We ended up getting the egg, ham, and cheese tartine, a chocolate croissant, and their hot chocolate cruffin. Their tartine was a very generous portion and my wife and I were able to split it. Smoked ham. Parmesan that falls onto the table when you take a bite. Amazing. As for their hot chocolate cruffin...this was so unique! Chocolate pudding on the inside, toasted marshmallow on top. The pastry was crisp on the outside while moist, sweet, and dense on the inside... allowing you to peel it apart. It's a masterpiece. One critique is I wish they had a menu on the wall. I was slightly overwhelmed walking in at first trying to figure out what was in their menu until I realized they have laminated menus on the counters. Excellent, delicious. Amazing. Some reviews might be confused on how being a profitable baker works and want some cafe experience but the margin vs reality on exclusively baked goods operations won't allow for a Panera experience. You can loiter somewhere else. You get amazing products to take and enjoy with your friends and family from Dan's. Asking for more is missing the point and would surely result in a need to inflate their fair prices. This isn't dining, but it is delicious and to expect otherwise is to miss the point entirely.
