Good. Very good even. But not the best bakery I've had the privilege of enjoying in Seattle. Still, completely good in its own right, and I can't think of anything better in its immediate vicinity, so that counts for a lot, I'd say.
So, picture this. It's a beautiful Friday morning in mid-May, and Seattle hasn't really seen a whole lot of sun. So someone, and I'm not naming names here, decides that it would be a great day to play hooky and spend downtown and along the waterfront, just basking in that glorious ball of light in the skay. So someone, still not naming names, did just that.
First stop, Dahlia Bakery. Ooh, anticipation. Okay, so park, walk, turn face up to sun. Check, check, check. Get to bakery. Yay! Hmm, greeting isn't that pleasant. Boo! Order asparagus and fried egg sandwich and an order of beignets. Yay! Stare, while trying desperately not to drool as there were two very hot men in the tiny shop with me at the time, at the amazingly scrumptious and decandent baked goods on the wall. Yay! Marvel at the mini coconut cream pies in the refrigerator case. *drool* Oh, darn it! Covertly eye the two cuties who were playing on their phones. Yum!
Name is called by same unpleasant greeter. Pronounced "Brian", in spite of the six times it needed to be repeated before being spelled. Whatever, give me my beignets and sandwich, lady! I don't need you anyway! Take beignets and sandwich and wander out of the store after a brief, but obviously meaningful few seconds of eye contact with Burberry tie hottie. Score!
Walk the four blocks down to the little park at the end of Pike Place. Hey, it's the cheese festival! More things I love! Sit at round table, gazing off towards West Seattle. Ahh, the red cranes. Hmm, birds are accosting me. I don't like birdies, Sam I Am. Fine, this sandwich is calling my name. Mission: Ignore Crows commences.
Mmm, delicious roasted asparagus, cheddar cheese, fried egg inside of a delicious (and it actually might have been the best part) English Muffin. Eat your heart out, McDonald's. THIS is a breakfast sandwich featuring an English Muffin. Oh, the crow is on my table. Don't think I won't hit you with my book, mister. Hmph. Oh, little chickadees. Well, you're still filthy birds, but you're cuter filthy birds, so I'll feed you little bits of the bread. Cool.
Now, the beignets. This is a little process. Get out the little containers of perfectly sweetened vanilla mascarpone and rhubarb (!!!!) compote, and place them just next to the bag of beignets. Take out first beignet. Tear in half and take a nibble to see how good it is without the glorious accoutrements offered. Yum. Very delicious. Now, dip un-nibbled half in mascarpone. Nibble. Oh, wow. Really, really good. Does mascarpone always taste this delish? It should! And the rhubarb compote, so good. Tiny bits of rhubarb in the thick saunce...it's like they knew I was coming in that day. Or that "Brian" was coming in.
Share beignets with two little children. What? I know how to share! Sheesh, oldest child here. What was mine was ALWAYS two other peoples, too! Anyway, beignets shared with children, English Muffin shared with the little chickadees, and nothing for the crows. Winning! read more
