I heard they had fried cheese curds! That's all the motivation I needed! Alas, I was very disappointed...in the cheese curds. The batter flavor was overwhelming and it really wasn't a batter. They were breaded with something like Italian bread crumbs. I don't know about you...but I love cheese and I wanted to taste the cheese but all I got was heavy breading. Just based on this, I would give it 1 star. This place would have gotten 3 stars because my burger was great. Meat tasted very fresh (not frozen at all), the veggies were crisp and piled on and the bun was super soft and buttery. It was damn good, I would say, but it gets 2 stars because my fiancee's Reuben had a hair in it. When she brought it up to the counter they just shrugged it off and said they would make another. I'm not saying we should be getting free stuff but I was expecting a little more passion in the reaction, all we got was apathy. Whatever...I should have known. I don't do "fast food" for a reason. For two sandwich meals (upgraded one to a cheese curd side) the total damage was $18. This is what I would consider an upper tier fast food burger establishment. It's on the verge of being a custom, hand made burger but still falls within fast food parameters. All that said, these are very good burgers. Today I had the Wisconsin Swiss Melt (double) which is two beef patties on grilled/griddled slices of rye with melted swiss and sauteed onions. What I like about their burgers is that they can hold their own without ketchup or sauces letting the beef flavor shine through. Also, while I generally don't like bigger sized fries, these guys serve up perfectly done crinkle cut fries. Definitely worth an occasional visit. read more

That moment when the staff is so rude to you because they made 2 of your 4 orders incorrectly but can't be bothered to make it right because at the drive though they say "come on up to the window" and by the time you get to the window they're conveniently closed???? Snotty manager will not provide name but my assumption is that she's the manager as the majority were wearing blue and she was the only one in a black shirt. It is fast food made with real ingredients. The burgers taste good as do the fries and onion rings. The frozen desert is called a custard but that is a misnomer - more like a frozen soft serve. There is always plenty of staff and they are bubbly and helpful. It is a quick and easy stop when you are hungry or you want your burger fix. Culver's is the kind of place where you'd rather not consider the calorie count. Perhaps for this reason, we try to stick with *just* the ice cream at this place. Despite having a wide variety of ice cream flavors at their disposal in the freezer, I do find it somewhat disappointing that they are limited to chocolate, vanilla, and the flavor of the day when you want to eat. Contrary to this criticism, I can never turn down a simple waffle cone with chocolate ice cream. It's so good. My significant other, on the other hand, indulges in their more indulging peanut butter caramel creations. He reported that it's dangerously good and has a love-hate relationship wit this place due to its proximity and the health implications from eating here too often. What I considered most interesting was the service. When we ate in, we were waiting for quite a while when there were literally only two other customers in the restaurant. Since we only ordered frozen treats, we had no idea why the guy who came out to check on us was confused about what we ordered. It was okay, since we were able to watch a recap of the Superbowl the entire time. Strangely enough, the service in the drive-thru was better. Culvers is about the only place in Tucson where you can get decent fish and shrimp. I'll keep going there just for their North Atlantic cod. Yummy. However, their french fries stink. They look and taste like the were just heated up after taking them out the freezer. Tasting raw with not a trace of brown or crispness. I've stated switching to onion rings and they are yummy but they are the authentic ones rather than those composed of ground up onions and tend to unravel in your mouth before you can swallow. onion rings = SO COOKED THERE WAS NO ONION LEFT INSIDE THEM and they were hard, as in too long in the oil. pork tenderloin = I asked for pickles - there were 3 little slices. And the sandwich was pretty DONE, too.. very dry. I'm from Iowa and there are no pork tenderloins in Tucson so this is my only choice. My visits here are few, I'm usually pretty disappointed in the sandwich. I'll come back in year or so when I forget how crappy the tenderloin sandwich is. This meal cost me over 10 dollars. Why do you go and choose to sit at a fast food restaurant at night, especially if it is beautifully decorated and have lots of TVs to watch basketball and etc.?? To relax and have fun, right? Or to forget about your problems at home. I especially like Culver's because it is an American classic! Decoration makes you feel at home! A good and old-style home! It was 10pm on a Friday night and I had one more hour until the restaurant was closed (This Culver's on 1st & River closes at 11pm on Fridays). It was a perfect relaxation for me with the 80's Rock music on and all that delicious food was in front of me and this very happy and dancing-with-the-music young lady who works there comes and "only" asks how am I doing? I said thank you, great. Then, she suddenly starts to spray this cleansing spray and starts to clean all the tables right in front of me and the TV I'm watching. I was suddenly very down, because I felt I was rushed, I felt she wanted me not to be there, most importantly the smell of the spray was seriously ruining all the things I cherished at the moment. She did not even ask if I would be bothered or not and cleaned like 7 of the tables all facing me right in front of my nose. I have never been a rude person in my life and I was just so unhappy with the situation and I decided to stop eating until she leaves hoping she would maybe understand. No she did not stop at all. By the time she danced with the music and finished cleaning all 7-8 tables around me, my burger was not the same burger at all, it was cold and everything. Can you believe that? I just wanted to have some peace there.. I could have taken it to my home, but I had prefered to be in that cozy atmosphere of Culver's at 1st Ave. She didn't even understand why I stopped eating, even though I was the only person eating in that corner. Finally she went away and I was half happy but could finally enjoy my burger, the music and basketball game in that lovely corner of the restaurant. However, only after 30 seconds, she comes directly to me asking if it would be OK with me to vacuum clean that corner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was just in shock. I just got up and moved to a different table and finished the rest of my meal quickly, uncomfortably sitting very close to other people and left the restaurant asap. Here's the question: Aren't restaurant hours for the customers to enjoy their time being there? It is so in decent restaurants, I know. Plus, why do you build a lovely and cozy fast food restaurant inside with all that American classic style atmosphere? Isn't it for people to enjoy their time in there? Why do you have to clean everything before the restaurant closes? What is this selfish attutide? I know employees also want to go home and it is right to go home. But, restaurant policy should not let them do the things they should be doing after hours. I know this is not a fancy steak restaurant, but I thought they were trying to be an elegant high class fast food restaurant compared to McDonalds and Burger King and etc.. So I went to go get myself and a coworker our lunch. I haven't been to this location since the last time they messed up my order, but since it was the only burger place around me, I had to go there. While ordering, I specifically asked for no onions. She repeated the order back to me and it was perfect. When I came back to work, I started eating my burger until I realized there were ONIONS. But this was not as bad as the last time when I was rushing to get home (I should've checked before leaving, I know). I ordered two Deluxe value baskets. I ended up getting two cheeseburgers with no fries. So I called and asked for the manager since I live about 30 minutes from there. She apologized and told me she would send me coupons. Fries were good, but my burger was mediocre at best. The bun was cold as if they had just shortly removed it from the refrigerator and the cheese was not melted on the meat patties. My double burger meal and my son's chicken tender meal totaled $18. I can find much better value at many other restaurants. read more

Great comfort food & custard! They have the best drive-thru onion rings that I've found in Tucson. Their cheese curds are great along with their fish sandwich. They have such a wide selection of choices on the menu that it's never hard to find something you like. if you go inside, there is a freezer with many different kinds of their daily custard mixes, so you have more choices for buying a pint. They used to (& maybe still do, if you ask), have a special price for buy 4 pints of custard at once that made it much cheaper than 1 pint at a time. My only gripe with them is that they don't have lids for individual custard servings. I don't always want to eat my custard right after my meal & if I have my dog with me, I have to be sure she stays out of my custard! read more

Ever since Haagen Daas discontinued their 5 ingredient Lemon ice cream that was soooo good, tart, custardy, not too sweet, I have been missing it. I was excited to see that a frozen custard place was opening and finally made it through their drive thru yesterday. Now, I must have been naiive and inexperienced, because although their sign says 'frozen custard' I was assaulted by big photos of hamburgers on my approach. I didn't see any custards anywhere, and a voice was yapping at me from the magic box, so instead of just looking further at the menu, I asked. ' do you have any custards that are citrus, like lemon or orange?" The voice answers back, dripping with snotty superiority "we have the flavor of the day, which I ALREADY TOLD YOU is C A R A M E L. Got it? That's why we call it the FLAVOR OF THE DAY." Now, if a server talked to you like that, would you stick around? Hopefully this new business will shake out the wrinkles, train up their employees a bit better, and improve their customer service. Or not. The staff is friendly and helpful. The restaurant is clean, but very, very drab. The food is OK (not great), but expensive when you compare it to In n Out or Five Guys. But what was really annoying is that we were charged approximately $2.00 for "deluxe condiments" on the hamburger. What are the deluxe condiments: tomato, lettuce, onion, and one (1) pickle slice (thin.) All in all, find a better burger at more reasonable prices elsewhere. read more

I'm no fan of the food. At several locations I have tried the fish (cod) and at first it was good; but then my stomach turned. Ok, so, I figured it was how they deep fry the fish, which does not cook fish all the way all the time. So, I tried it another time, my friend ordered the fish again, this time she got sick. I had the burger. Not the best burger. On other visits, I ordered a milkshake (too sweet) and a "concrete mixer" (sweet but tolerable, and, my own fault: Snickers and caramel). While I am not impressed with the food, myself, I can see how others might enjoy it. And here is where Culver's stands above the rest: The employees. My husband and I waited for a while for our food, and decided to go up to the counter to see if something was wrong. It turns out they made the ticket, and brought out our order to the wrong table. The manager immediately remade our ticket, brought it out to us right away and gave us our food for free. When we went back to the counter to get ice cream after lunch they paid for that for us as well. They made what was only a minor inconvenience much better by wonderful service and being so friendly. We will definitely be back to this Culvers again and I highly recommend anyone else do the same! read more

Poor customer service. Too many young people that have no customer service skills whatsoever. Even the managers are lacking skills. If you're unhappy in your job, then find another or act like you like it and do the job you're supposed to do. Wow, I must say this place is pretty good. This chain is like Whataburger for us Texans. The burgers are really tasty and I love that they give you crinkled fries instead of the shoestring ones. They taste crispy and give you a different taste. Burgers are delicious and so are they cheese curds and ice cream. A little bit more pricier than Whataburger, but it is worth it. The restaurant is extremely clean, which for a fast food place is not too common, especially here in Tucson. I would definitely recommend this place. read more

Just can't do much better, na, scratch that, you CAN'T do any better for "fast" food than this particular Culvers. Everything I've tried, from pretzel bun burgers to a traditional Patty Melt to fried shrimp dinner, you just can't do any better especially this quick.
