Switched from ATT dsl ($50/mo) to Common ($40/mo). Common is something like 10 times faster and cheaper. During the recent windstorm, Common service went out for day while power in the neighborhood a few blocks away was completely out (and apparently the Common signal is relayed from that direction). Common gave us a one month credit for that incident, which was nice. The antenna on the roof is interesting; we are getting used to it. That's the only downside. My friend was able to get his antenna mounted on his chimney stack which aesthetically is a significant improvement. But because we have big trees in the back yard, they had to use the tripod style to mount on end of roof (because their directional antennas require unimpeded line-of-site), which is definitely more obtrusive. I suspect that once more people sign up on the tree-free side of our location, we might be able to get them to move the antenna to the chimney stack since they would have more line-of-sight connection points available from our chimney stack. read more

If you can get connected to common networks, do it. Not only is the connectivity great, but the customer service is beyond any internet company I've ever dealt with. I had problems getting my internet enabled light switches to work with the common networks router. I sent an email to their customer service on the off chance that there was something they could/would do for me. Clint emailed me back very quickly. He remembered helping a customer with a similar problem and was able to reconfigure the router and make it possible for my switches to be used. I've been with Common Networks since their "trial". I am an Alameda customer and have been very impressed with the overall service, but also the customer service and responsiveness. Fast speeds ... yes, it has gone down a few times, but this is normal especially for a new company getting it just right. For the price, there just isn't anything that compares. Common Networks is a Super Star operation! After dealing with AT&T for over a month to get a simple internet upgrade (major fail) I discovered Common Networks through word of mouth on Alameda Peeps FB page. Jonathan actually showed up early & got the job done with complete professionalism (including a ladder 4 stories up no problem). Install was seamless and he had me up & running in no time. I am now paying a fraction of the price each month that AT&T was charging me for years (total rip off!) plus my internet speed is well over 4 x's faster! So yes! It's a a total pain to have to call & try to negotiate the big monopolies to lower their price, upgrade your service or any other kind of "deal" you can make with a 12-24 month contract. Blech. Then the techs don't show up. The right hand doesn't know what left is doing (your account is cancelled.. oh wait, it's not! Call the tech again So you can miss another 1/2 day of work while they don't show up... again & again). I hope you get my point. Common Networks showed up earlier than expected, internet speed is up over 100 gigs (they like to over deliver their advertised 75 & so far its awesome), $50 flat rate per month, No contract or hidden fees. Got the big antenna way up top & small space age modem inside. It's a no brainer people. If you live in Alameda & are suffering with high prices or low speeds Common Networks is the way to go. I was even able to book my install date online within days of deciding to switch. So it's been a Win Win all around & couldn't be happier to have dropped the sh*t show of AT&T. We Common Networks install their equipment in October 2019 at our San Leandro home and we have been very pleased. The installation was quick and neat. The signal strength and reliability has been incredible. Their equipment is high quality and their technician was excellent. We switched to over air TV almost 20 years ago and stream most of our programs and movies. We have had experience with Comcast, Dish, Century link in another location and AT&T, Common Net is the best. Since installation we have had some extreme weather with rain and wind and have not experienced any reception issues. The download and upload numbers have been fantastic. Signed up in Nov 2017, they had it up and running a few days later. I work from home and need that internet working consistently ALL day, and it was. Wasn't yet hitting the advertised speeds but it was good enough to cancel my Comcast service. And then, out of nowhere last week their customer service gets in touch to ask me how it's going and I say fine but still waiting for the speed to get up to the promised 75/75. And I guess I've just been so demoralized by Comcast cause lemme tell you I was stunned!! and shocked!! to get an actual response hours later from an actual person acknowledging the actual problem. Two days later, guy comes to tweak the roof gear a bit, and ever since.... I'm consistently measuring over 100mbps up AND down. Congrats Common Networks, you did it. What an absolute sh!t show. In June we had one solid painful week of outages, not fun when trying to work from home during the Covid-19 shelter in place! I finally got someone on the phone only to tell me that they share a fiber connection and the co-partner was making some "unannounced" changes that they were not told about. I've worked in networking for over 20 years, and unless you're running a new fiber connection, it does not take a week to fix a previously existing and working connection unless a fiber seeking backhoe has taken it down, even then, the telco tends to resolve these types of issues within days, not weeks. The following week they send an email stating that their pulling out of the Sunnyvale market, and that they will refund June and provide July free of charge so we have time to switch to another provider. Never saw a credit for June, and they charged me for July. I contacted them and so far I'm getting run around. Today, July 2nd, they went down hard right at midnight (typical maintenance window time, coincidence?). Try calling their customer support to get some kind of status, and you get voice mail. I've never had great speeds from Common Networks. Typical speed tests would be around 25Mbps, not the 75Mbps as advertised and that I was sold. Long lag times during network tests. When I brought this to their attention in the past, it fell on deaf ears. As much as I dislike Comcast, my experience with these fly by night ISPs has been less than stellar. Now that Comcast has a 100Mbps service for $35/mo, it's simply not worth the risk and lack of service (both customer service as well as actual Internet service). read more

Customer of Common effective September 2017. Very happy with service and support, Up/Down speeds exceed those promised 90% of the time. I'm not a manic Speedtester but I run often enough to find the service consistent. New customers should however be prepared for drilling and strapping on the roof and I confess - I wasn't. That said I was very satisfied with the install (complete within two hours), the engineer was attentive, prepared, and open to my requests for the cable location both outside and interior to house. No drilling required in the floor and utilized an existing (retired) coax location. Engineer also pointed out that many old houses in Alameda have chicken wire in the walls which can create a Faraday cage effect in certain interior locations and I've found this to be true. Roof mounting of antenna is rock solid, no shaking or rattling in recent wind storms. My experience with Customer Support has been outstanding, replies to my email received within hours. Highly recommend Common and happy I made the switch. read more

Had Common installed in March 2017 and have been very happy with it. Installation was professional, and they ran the cable to the place I already had all the infrastructure (ethernet switch etc) for the wired network in the house. A month or so later they returned to switch one dish to an omni (we have a lot of neighbours now also using the system, many of whom are pointing at our antenna for their connectivity I believe). Performance-wise, the thing normally gets just under 100Mbps down and recently has been over that up (yesterday, our eero system recorded 102 down/138 up when it did its daily speed test). I was paying Comcast more per month, and getting maybe 25Mbps down and usually no more than 5Mbps up. read more

Started my service in January of this year and the internet connection was consistent. However, starting in late May, service interruptions happening more and more often. It began with slow speed then losing connection few minutes at a time, and then the outages longer and longer. I reported on June 19th, I got the following response: "We've gone ahead to pull up your site and we're seeing frequent microoutages in the network. We apologize for any service disruption and for any inconvenience this has caused you and your house hold. We're going to escalate this issue up to our Network Operations team for further assessment. It looks like this is an isolated issue for this address, and the team will be able to look into the hardware onsite. When they are able to share any next steps for resolution, which can typically take about 24-48 hours, we can keep you updated with that additional information. We will bump this up with priority so you may hear back sooner than the time frame mentioned." The technician finally came June 30 (reported on June 19), more than 11 days later. He installed the hardware and left. No details about what is going on. The service was consistent for 1 day (but at a low speed of 10 Mbps) and then start dropping again. I wrote back to customer service and raise my concern again, but no one get back to me (no update since 6/27, the technician just dropped by unannounced). I am ready to cancel and go back to Comcast. read more

I am not much of a techie despite my millennial street cred. That said, I just signed up with internet with these folks after years of comcast and im in love. I have hated comcast for over a decade and felt trapped by their internet monopoly. Common Networks to the rescue! They are incredibly good at customer service, faster and cheaper than comcast and did the install in a few hours. My HOA was concerned about the roof installation. Common Networks showed up like a boss and not only did they keep the roof safe but they removed (for free!) an old piece of junk antenna that was poorly attached and a hazard. Mostly loved them before they were SOLD OUT to "MonkeyBrains". But in the past month, Monkeybrains.net has FAILED to deliver even the most BASIC of connectivity. See my internet outage list included as a pic. I CANNOT carry on a WebEx meeting without a Drop, no watch a movie, no download a significant file. Has been reported to Monkey and common multiple times. The response from Monkey FAILS to commit to any improvement. this has been going on for about a month. Having worked for Cisco Systems (11Y), Juniper Networks (9Y), and now another well-known company, I have never seen any transition of any company or ISP (as our customer) been handled so COMPLETELY terribly over such a LONG period of time. THERE appears to be no resolution, SO I WOULD ADVISE EVERYONE TO WAIT A YEAR before considering either name as a suitable ISP. They need to FIRE their chief of operations and Technical Management staff for complete ineptitude. Here was their response to my second plea for a fix: Andrew, Thank you for your ticket and the information behind. We do apologize for the inconvenience of the transition. The reality is the network is moving into our hands over the next month. We are attempting to keep the network alive. It is unfortunate you are not getting the ideal transition you would like. We are not getting the ideal transition we'd like to see either. It is important that our clients have patience and perspective while we undergo this transition. We understand how important internet is, we live and breathe it here. We have clients who appreciate the process and those who go elsewhere, even if it is for a short time. We get it. But this process is essential. I am finally off Common, and it was a bad beak-up. As I said in my first review, I began experiencing issues with Common almost as soon as people started staying home, and the problems got much worse in late May/early June. After that, for a while they appeared to have fixed the problems. Shortly after, I received a notice that Common was going to end service in my area effective August 8. About a week and a half ago, the connection kept becoming unstable from about 10:30 am to 7:30 pm. EVERY DAY. With multiple customer service inquiries, they told me that my location was experiencing issues and that they were trying to fix it. Only yesterday - as I was having a different provider do their installation - I received another email saying that my problem was due to them taking down equipment in my area and they would end service on August 1, not the 8th. It's fine for a provider to leave an area. It's business. But don't tell your customers their service is going to work until a certain date when you KNOW it isn't. This last bit of treatment by their customer service left a bitter taste in my mouth, and it will keep me from recommending them to my friends and family in the East Bay. read more

Long story short, I've been without consistent internet for a week now and they haven't really helped at all. Been with common a for just below two years now, and candidly, I'm satisfied as a customer. Their service has perpetually degraded despite several technicians coming out to look into the situation. Communication from their customer support is generally slow and lacking solutions. They boast 80mbps up/down, to which I've never had a speed above 25mbps download, and 50mbps up. And combine that with frequent drops, speed degradations, and outages - all of which occur weekly - I'm struggling. The price was good, but the local big telecoms have reduced their prices to match, and are generally offering better speeds. As much as I wanted to support the local business, my advice is to go with one of them over Common Networks. read more

I have to agree with Aaron P. - fast speeds interrupted by zero connection is useless to me. It's also very frustrating and that frustration is compounded by an utter lack of support from Common. I will be changing providers ASAP. tl;dr We have experienced multiple hours-long periods where our download speed has dropped literally to zero. No work, no news, no TV, no Zoom, no Email, no nothing! Oddly enough, uploads sometimes still function. Apparently, the rooftop antennae operate as some kind of poorly coordinated mesh network with no redundancy, multipathing, or recovery. Mesh technology has been around for a while, they might improve if they apply themselves to it but there doesn't seem to be a will to do so. They do appear to be able to manually recover your connection, but they're not responsive when you ask so you get to wait and wait and wait. For support, you can be equally ignored over the phone, by text, or by email. Your urgency is not their concern. Not everyone will experience these issues to the same extent. It probably depends on where you sit in their ad-hoc network. If your connection depends on a single pathway then you'll go down when it goes down and you'll stay down as long as it does. This would explain the discrepancy between the higher ratings and the lower ratings. Read the lower reviews before you make your decision. There is no way for you to predict what your experience will be in advance unless Common can tell you - so ask them before you sign up. read more

Our mental health clinic, California Counseling Associates in Alameda, needed to change our wireless/internet provider and chose Common Networks. It is a local company and has lots of happy customers - including our own colleagues and acquaintances. We are very glad that we chose them. The installers, techs and billing staff members we've worked with are all professional, wonderful to work with, and actually love their work/jobs!!! I recently had occasion to troubleshoot a wireless issue with one of their several extraordinary technicians, Phillip. He and I worked together by phone for a couple of hours to try to unravel the wireless/cabling issue, that became apparent after our divorce from the previous company. He needed someone with tech knowledge at our end to have eyes on the issues, so I called in our local IT professional, Oscar Velasco; they worked together by phone and solved the problem. Phillip continued to show kindness and utter patience, as he always has; so did/does Oscar. It has been a complete joy to work with Common Networks and with Phillip. Do you like fast, reliable internet? Oh, in that case, you may need another provider. VOIP calls (which require a stable connection) cut out; remote desktop environments (which require a stable connection) drop; streaming video will stop; basically anything that requires a stable connection will fail. So then you call Common to complain, or better yet text them! Here's what you can expect, if you text, they typically respond 4-10 hours later with a response like "It looks like your network is fine on our end, must be your device." If you call, you can expect to wait on hold for about 10 minutes then get their voicemail which tells you to leave a message. So while they SAY they are available to help, their customer service is so delayed that it's rarely helpful. Why do I continue to use Common if it's so bad? Well, mostly because of the giant antenna on my roof that, if removed, would put a giant hole in my attic. If I'm going to have to endure that antenna, I might as well get internet. And also because AT&T is even worse, somehow. read more

I had previously been a Comcast customer for nearly 20 years and friends and colleagues gave favorable reviews of Common's service, reliability, but above all..price. I was ready to cut the cable cord. Their signup was was a breeze and they could have a technician out in just a few days. No installation charge. The technician even showed up just a little early for his appointment. Despite some small hiccups following installation, for 5 months we have been very happy with our 80Mb/s service. But a couple days ago I, and my neighbors, received an email saying Common was dropping our community. " We are ending service in your neighborhood. After much thought, we've made the difficult decision to stop providing service to your neighborhood on November 30, 2020. We've appreciated the opportunity to be your internet provider, and want to thank you for being a Common customer. " To appreciate how extraordinarily unexpected this is, consider this email message sent to Common customers on Aug 27: "...after seeing an increase in demand in your area recently, we're working hard to upgrade our network equipment to meet it. Good news -- you should notice improved speed and performance in the coming weeks! We know fast and reliable internet is critical to our customers, especially now that many are working and learning from home. We appreciate you choosing Common!" being dropped is not simply a matter of signing up with a competitor. A Common installation requires a mast to be mounted on the rooftop. Installations are about speed and convenience (for the installer) so the cable from the mast is run under eaves or down rain spouts and a hole is drilled in the wall. Inside the wall Common provides a router...at no additional charge. Great! So many of us gave away our old router or sold it. You have to use Common's router...but hey, it's decent quality and free!) So being dumped unceremoniously means holes in the roof/singles, a hole in the wall/siding, and time to go shopping for a new router. Bottom line is that I really liked their service. Great performance. Outstanding price. But being dropped...after receiving a message that due new investment as a result of increased demand, we should expect even BETTER performance soon, you feel like you have been tricked. To my knowledge, the main island of Alameda is not affected. This is slightly insulting...like we are a low-value neighborhood they don't want to waste anymore money on.
