One of the first things you will notice about him is that he is an excellent listener. He doesn't just hear you, then immediately try to sell you something you don't want, he actually listens without interruption, takes notes, then does his best to provide advice within the stated parameters of what you conveyed to him. While sales people in a store or on the phone typically want to talk you into an expensive piece of equipment for their commission benefit, Si will actually tell you that you don't need to spend money on that piece of equipment if it doesn't fit within your stated needs. He will tell you that a less expensive piece of equipment will serve you well. As electronic equipment becomes increasingly complicated, it's good to know you can turn to Si to provide pragmatic and objective advice. Si is also very organized and clean when he performs an expert installation. He labels all wiring for easy identification and cleans up after he completes his work. If you have questions, even after you've paid him, he actually responds and cares enough to address any concerns. He even goes above and beyond what is typically experienced nowadays: When I needed a new remote for an older amplifier/receiver and couldn't track one down online, I assumed I would have to make to do until Si suddenly emailed me and told me he found one online and it was being mailed to my house. I didn't ask him to do that, he just did it because he is a thoughtful person who cares about his clients. I bought a house with speakers built into all of the rooms, but didn't know if it was worth investing the system further. I sent a yelp message asking for a quote for a consultation and Si showed up the same afternoon to take a look for free. I am located in Alameda and it was a fairly straightforward question, but it was still very kind of him. He looked at the huge jumble of wires coming out of the wall and started immediately explaining what he was looking at. At my request, he explained the different price ranges of what I could do with it. One of the things I said was that I wanted an opinion, should I invest in making the system usable or not? When I first moved to Alameda some 8 years ago, I contacted Si at Hidden Connections about mounting a small TV in our breakfast nook. I have had Si Lewis (Hidden Connections) install three TVs of various sizes in my house at different times. The TVs all were wall-counted with the power cords hidden within the walls and tied behind and into the nearest power outlets. One was even tied into the roof antenna through the attic and down the wall to the power. I am so pleased with the work that was done for all three installations. Hidden Connections does very professional work. Si is the owner and is professionally friendly, knowledgeable about all phases of the project, protects the project area with floor tarps, and cleans up the installation site when done. We've been struggling with our home wi-fi network reach. I finally convinced my husband that we needed to invest in running cat-6 wiring throughout the house. Pete and the rest of the team were great. I needed a ethernet cable run from downstairs to upstairs (it's been running out the window this summer, but with the rain coming...) The staff communicated quickly and clearly with text which is SO much easier that voicemail or email. Pete did an awesome job, figuring out a way to run the cable with minimum disruption. His installation is so discrete that my husband came home and thought the job had not been done because he could not see any holes or cables. As a bonus, Pete left his work areas cleaner than when he started! Only downside was the price. Felt a little steep. Although, to be honest, I did not get a bunch of bids, so could be totally in-line with the competition. I called them because of the great yelp reviews, they responded so quickly and helpfully that I just went with it. For us, money well spent and much better than a home repair job with a million curse words, holes and trips to the hardware store. At my request, Si came to my home to diagnose my home theater problem: my plasma TV stopped working, and it was not clear if it was in the TV or the separate receiver. After some thoughtful procedures, he ascertained the problem was in the receiver. To deal with this problem,he clearly outlined 4 options and the costs of each. Although one option (a work-around) was by far the least expensive, it meant I would have to use 3 or 4 remotes to use it; so I decided against it. I was impressed by his knowledge of the whole set-up and especially by his honesty and forthrightness in presenting the options.( He did not indicate his preference for which option I chose, and he did not pressure me in any way.) I decided on purchasing a new Marantz receiver from him (same price as online) and arranged for him to install it Within a few days he arrived with the receiver and expertly installed it. Having just moved into a new home I wanted to install and mount a TV cleanly above our fireplace. I was going to do it myself but I would've used those ugly wire tracks and done a horrible job. This place is incredible! They do the most amazing things with stereos, tvs and everything audio-video! We had them program a whole house remote and now we can finally use all our stereo equipment easily. It has been great for listening to CDs, IPODs, radio and even vinyl.
