Call on a Sunday afternoon requesting a quote, and left a message. I got a call back within 15 mins after leaving a message. Mike returned my call promptly was very helpful and informative on the field. After provided some information regarding my new residence, he informed me that the only ISP are AT&T and San Bruno Cable. Other small time players in the ISP (sonic, dslextreme and rawbandwidth) uses AT&T network and does not service my area, so unfortunately I am stuck with the two options, both are terrible after reading through the reviews on Yelp. Unfortunately, there are no viable options available, so I guess I have to settle with AT&T. If Raw Bandwidth ever expand I will switch in a heart beat simply due to how informative and quick on their feet of people that works there. Thank you Mike for taking your time to explain the detail and explain my options. I wish San Bruno will do-away with the Municipal Internet/TV and let Comcast and other provider into the field. I've been using Raw Bandwidth service at home and in business for about 15 years and could not be happier with the service. I'm part of the Bay Area community of Linux programmers and system administrators and exposed to lots of information about network service providers as well as having a good deal of direct personal experience with various network service providers. We're a critical bunch and look for quality and value. And we have no tolerance for what the English call bullpucky. Colleagues enthusiastically recommended Raw Bandwidth as they had been using them for years and been happy with the service. In our circle, we pay attention when someone has enthusiasm for a vendor. I went with Raw Bandwidth for home service, then for my and other small businesses. I think I've had two outages during the 15 years and they were not the problem of Raw Bandwidth but rather of AT&T whose copper lines carry the DSL service. I'm not sure who all comprises Raw Bandwidth but Mike sets the highest standard for technical competence, responsiveness, dedication and integrity. As others note in these reviews, he is very patient and respectful in dealing with customers and goes out of his way to be helpful even if he is not making money from the transaction. Raw Bandwidth has made a business of offering DSL service (more properly ADSL) using the copper lines that have served our telephone system for many decades. The ADSL service model has allowed entrepreneurs like Mike to participate by providing components of the overall service. Unfortunately, the networking landscape is now marked by the presence of giant, rude oligopolies such as Comcast and AT&T using broadband and fiber optic services instead of ADSL over copper lines. These service models are more monolithic and don't lend themselves to entrepreneurs handling some parts of the service. A result is less competition and customers left with fewer choices. I look forward to a time when networking is more decentralized (distributed maybe) and individuals and entrepreneurs can play a bigger part in a competitive environment giving the consumer choice in networking service. Mike and other conscientious workers will be winners in that environment and the oligopolies will, I hope, be history. read more

Couldn't recommend 'em more highly. I've had Raw Bandwidth as my ISP since 2003, it's been excellent, highly competent, rock solid reliable service, heck, in 13+ years of service and being their customer their DSL service over the exact same copper pair to the central office has been more reliable than AT&T's Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) (ye olde landline) over the exact same copper pair! Unfortunately, effective 2019-12-19 they're discontinuing this particular DSL service offering :-/ - though they do still have many other offerings (including I believe also some other DSL offerings), but alas, not one that (well) fits me and my particular needs for my current location. So, ... after 16+ years of fabulous service, I find myself now needing to find another ISP that will cover what I require (notably including a smallish (about 5) number of static IPv4 addresses, and unfettered access to The Internet (e.g. TCP port 25 open in and out - I run mailservers and listservers, among other services, commonly need unblocked access in/out to troubleshoot stuff on/across The Internet, etc.)). read more

I read all the positive reviews about Mike and I was ready to remove AT&T as my service provider. I had a phone call with Mike to discuss my internet needs. He answered all my questions and was very honest about his services. It's a very different experience that any other internet provider. I never felt pressured throughout the call either. I just had my DSL tested and installed by Mike about an hour ago and I have to say the whole experience from the ordering over the phone to having him personally in my home connecting me to their service was absolutely pleasant. I had AT&T for 7 years now and anytime I needed to deal with them, I had to wait on average a half hour before I can get a customer representative to assist me with an issue. This was the same deal when I finally called them to disconnect my service with them. With Raw Bandwidth, it was completely the opposite! When I called to order the Standalone ADSL2+ I was already talking to a live person (Mike specifically), placed the order and within business days, he was in my house to set up my service. Mike was extremely knowledgeable and professional. He communicated with me and advised the steps I needed to take to make the transition of service from the faceless AT&T corporation to Raw Bandwidth in days leading up to the installation. I chose to the 3 mbps plan which is the cheapest plan they have but so far it's good enough for me and I can load any pages with the same ease that I had with AT&T DSL. This is the type of customer service that wins me over any day and I'll be excited to do business with a small company like this for a long time to come. read more

Unfortunately they do not (North San Jose, near Milpitas), however Mike went out of his way to help me select an ISP that would work given my rather unusual circumstances (cannot run cable into the house because the property owner won't allow it). I've had service from Raw Bandwidth in Berkeley, San Francisco, and San José. It's always been reliable as can be -- I remember 1 or 2 brief outages in a total of 3 years of being a customer. Mike once came to my place at 9 PM to install my DSL. I have the lowest-priced residential DSL option and it's always been good enough for me. I sent Raw Bandwidth an inquiry on a Saturday, asking if we were in their coverage area and whether they could beat the speed and price of our current carrier, DSL Extreme. Mike responded the same day (!) explaining how all the ISPs in my area, including them, currently have to use AT&T equipment and how switching to their service would not be a noticeable improvement. So, although it would not be worth it to switch ISPs at this time, if Raw Bandwidth ever does offer a better service I'll switch to them in a heartbeat. What a breath of fresh air Mike is! He is very knowledgeable, responsive to emails, super patient and does not pressure you into service that you won't need, he provides good honest feedback based on your situation. After about a week of communication, Mike came over for the install. I live in an older apartment building so the telephone wiring is bit tricky to say the least. We went around my building looking for ways to bring the internet/phone line into my apartment. All the options seemed daunting but Mike was patient throughout and continued to suggest different ideas no matter how difficult the install would be. He never gave up, he was determined to find a solution. Finally we agreed on a solution but it would be a very tricky install. Mike and I spent 2 hours crawling, climbing into tight spaces snaking cable through tight crevices, not once did he complain, he kept at it until the job was done. The install took longer than anyone expected but Mike was patient throughout. The desire to get the job done right was very evident. In terms of the internet service itself, thus far has been very reliable, I am able to get the advertised speed and haven't gotten received any downtime yet. The price was very reasonable. He offers month to month or a 12-month agreement which waives the installation fee, knowing that I can rely on Mike, I signed up for the 12-month agreement. Thanks Mike, you rock! read more

Mike went above and beyond to set up my internet connection. I have minimal connection needs and a challenging situation to access my apartment and the phone boxes. The big companies were charging way too much for the minimal service I need. Plus, AT&T repeatedly failed to set up service due to internal communication problems. We moved from East Bay to Millbrae only to find out that the service AT&T has in our area is like the slowest... Then Mike came to rescue! He's very knowledgable and his price is very reasonable too for the internet package provided. We quickly decided to hire him as our internet provider in our new home. We moved in on a Saturday and we can't live without internet and desperately wanted to have it installed sooner rather than later. Mike offered to come on the Saturday night, the day we moved in. He came around 11pm or so and finished installation around 1am... which is pretty crazy! But we got internet on the first day we moved in!!!! How fantastic is that! This alone no other major internet providers can beat! The installation is free if you're committed for 1 year. Yep we're gonna stay! Lately our internet went in and out a bit and we called Mike again to come take a look. We called on a Saturday and he showed up at our door step on Sunday... He quickly started trouble shooting and diagnosed the problem. We had some work done around the house and probably those workers moved the equipment around and the cable came loose. After he fixed that, our internet is back up running and stable again! We have a large place, about 2500 sqft, with the help of a router+extender he recommended, so far we have no issues and internet is good and stable in every room. Can't be more happy about that! I live in Menlo Park, and I have the 6 Mbps residential DSL option with static IP. In short: The service is always available, and when I have questions Mike ALWAYS answers. Once I was having problems he came to our place, camped there for a few hours until the problem was resolved (it was at my end, not with his service and equipment) and did not charge for anything. I contacted Raw Bandwidth about getting DSL to my house, and within a day Mike was able to come out and set up the service. After doing a speed test, Mike explained to me that for my particular location and video streaming habits, it would make more sense for me to go with one of his competitors. He also gave me a ton of advice on how I might want to set up my wireless network and how much bandwidth I should expect to use based on what quality of video I stream. I just moved to Shelter Creek Lane, San Bruno yesterday and I am looking for an Internet Service Provider. AT&T's DSL can only provide 3Mbps download speed; San Bruno Cable has decent speed but seems terrible on Yelp and sets a 500Gb bandwidth cap on their flyer. But Raw Bandwidth Communications' plan seems better then the above companies': No bandwidth cap, 20Mbps download speed with $50/month. I emailed them this afternoon and I got a reply right away with the detailed explanation of the plans. Also, Mike said he can come this evening to set everything up. This is really great service, since it's Sunday today and tomorrow is also the Independence Holiday. Mike came this evening and got everything working. If you value your time, and need a reliable connection, you'll consider this the best ISP on earth for residential DSL. Say goodbye to the burden of dealing with vapid support technicians and impotent customer service personnel. No 45 minute waits on hold. No call center in India. If you have a problem with rawbw, you deal directly with Mike, the owner/operator. No runaround. No escalations. No guessing. No BS. One example: A few years ago I experienced an outage while websurfing at 3 am. Called the support line intending to leave a message, but was shocked to find that it rang through to Mike's cell phone. He was already in his car, on his way to the office to investigate the trouble that caused the outage. (Turned out to be a power failure.) Another example: I had a very difficult to debug, very infrequent intermittent problem with my (self-supplied) DSL modem. Even though he didn't supply my equipment, Mike was familiar with the model, and, over a period of *weeks*, he helped me conduct experiments to narrow down the issue (including shipping me equipment to try out, free of charge). Each interaction with Mike was no more than a quick e-mail exchange or a 5 minute phone call. Is a major ISP gonna provide this kind of experience? No way. Having a static IP standard is cool, too. read more
