As a chef from dallas, I was a bit apprehensive for the first 30 seconds and then I was greeted by Ella at the bar.. immediately warm and welcoming. She made not only a fantastic cocktail but also a great conversation! Then comes in Jenny , an equally prepared foodie, cocktail professional and with a heart of gold. The food is to die for. We shared bone marrow tacos, a crab dip that was out of this world and a smattering of other delicacies.. This review I dug up is from a while ago, things may have changed-- I believe the happy hour is very different now! January 2020 was my first time at Comedor in Downtown Austin. My companion and I went at 5 PM on a Friday, during their Happy Hour (it ran til 6:30). In daylight, the door to Comedor is dark and non-descript, easy to miss, playing into the somewhat-limited, somewhat-upscale vibe for which they're aiming. Note Happy Hour (HH) is/was purportedly at the bar only. This is fine by me, as we were able to be seated there, but may limit accessibility to HH once the bar fills up. The food overall was great. The HH target was the recommended Taco Flight, and I added the Mezcal flight to mine. My partner got a Margarita and Yellowfin Aguachile app to start. Both the margarita and yellowfin were delicious. The yellowfin in particular had an excellent menagerie of flavors: salty, fatty, spice, citrus, smoke, zest. She ended up getting another Yellowfin mid taco flight. As we each got a taco flight, we enjoyed breaking down both the events of our days and flavors unfolding with each course. Each taco that came explored a different take on what Comedor believes a taco can be, via ingredients and cooking method. Seafood, veggies, beef, fried, braised, simmered... It was a great showing. The tortillas and accompanying or applied sauces varied as well. Rooted in tradition, but creative, each one was a delight, even my least favorite. I was most impressed (though it wasn't my favorite) by the veggie one, as I never order veggie tacos. With each taco came a mezcal pairing for me, which I can sum up as a fine experience but something I'll skip next time. I appreciate various liquors including Mezcal, but prefer them chilled. I did not note the names of each (though I did look at each label) but know I had a favorite of the flight, which was earthier and sweeter, and least favorite, which was fusel-y. The service was good, the bartender took our orders and delivered drinks and Mezcal, and servers brought food. However, the attentiveness was not as high as some other places in Austin (think Hai group), using my water glass level as a measuring stick. I'd think sitting in front of a bartender would assist in that, but I ended up co-opting my companion's glass when mine was empty. The dishes came out with nice regularity and we left at 6 PM. We ended up being very happy with the food and experience, and I look forward to going back. The happy hour deal is solid value for tasty tacos, but I won't be doing the Mezcal flight again. The normal menu is a bit pricy looking but I can't speak to any of the actual food on it. I easily recommend going (early) for Happy Hour. read more

It's ambitious, the presentation here is almost always artwork, and the wait staff is on-point. But I felt the dishes needed more balance. Because the happy hour is ordered à la carte (instead of being a progression), it didn't quite work for me. For example, I started with the kanpachi crudo, which had a vinegary finish and left my palate unbalanced. That imbalance continued into my taco de pescado, which was really dry, and badly in need of more salsa verde to tie things together. Aside from that, the taco was hard to fold; too loaded with fish to close. The bone marrow tacos, which everybody tells you to get, were successful - briny, decent texture, hitting those umami notes. On the other hand, the croquettas de arroz, despite being warm, crispy, and served with a creamy and acidic aioli, fell short on umami, which was really shocking since they have plenty of pork. I'd get the repo ginger again - complex acidity and spirit forward, just delicious - and the fruity isla privada is so drinkable, it's outright dangerous. The dress code inside is not really enforced - I saw people dressed from business casual all the way down to casual. It was nearly 100 degrees on the day I went, so I wish I'd known I could've gotten away with a polo and shorts. read more

Fantastic experience here! Pros: Food, Service, Vibe/Ambiance Cons: not a fan of service charges, and this is more an Austin thing and not the restaurant's fault. But many women dress up nicely (dresses, hair, heels, makeup etc) while you still see so many dudes in like t shirts, shorts (jorts) flip flops etc. Anyway the interior of the restaurant is stunning - very high ceilings, huge windows with a dark vibe inside - could be a NYC/Vegas type restaurant. Good for dates, friends etc. Great place to dress up and have amazing food and fun drinks! Our server was Ella, who was incredible! Native Texan, so friendly and charming while being super knowledgeable and attentive. The service truly elevated the experience. As for the dishes: ++ Tuna Crudo ++ Fish Tacos ++ Mexican Chocolate Pot + Tacos de Res + Papas Fritas + Helado de Plantain There were no misses in our dishes! In fact, the Tuna Crudo and Fish Tacos go on the list of top Austin dishes we've had. While I recently loved Este, their fish tacos didn't stand out while these were just amazing. The Tacos de Res tasted good with the ribeye and I would surely get them again, but they were a bit on the greasy side. They're not a must have and I continue to think Este's Catchetada is the pinnacle of tacos in Austin (or the country, and comparable to La Buena Barra's taco de rib eye in Monterrey, MX). Although there are other desserts I'd like to try the Mexican Chocolate Pot is magnificent. I am excited to have had Comedor and I'd absolutely return and want to to take friends/family visiting. You can tell there is a lot of thought and creativity behind the menu, and visually, the dishes are stunning. That being said, I personally found it a bit overrated, especially considering the price point and the amount of hype surrounding it in Austin. The cocktails were strong, but felt a little stiff and didn't really stand out. The short rib taco was flavorful, but extremely oily and felt a bit one-note. The crudo was fresh, but for a fine dining restaurant, the portion was quite small and the dish itself didn't leave much of an impression. The dish that impressed me the most was the bone marrow. It was roasted beautifully, topped with gremolata, and served with soft tortillas. That dish had the richness, balance, and creativity I was hoping to experience throughout the meal. Another factor that affected the overall experience was the seating. For the price we paid, being seated so closely next to another table made the atmosphere feel less intimate than expected. If you're someone who loves fine dining and wants to stop in for a few dishes and cocktails, this could be a great spot to experience. However, if you're planning on having a full meal, expect to spend around $200 to $300, and I'm not sure the overall experience matches that price point. $6 drinks is such a steal for happy hour! Happy hour only at their bar, so request to sit there if that's all you're going for. Stand out drink was the espresso-based carajillo. Best drink I have had all summer. It is luxurious feeling in here for an affordable price. Gorgeous and hidden away in design, almost intentionally setting itself apart from the busy wallpaper of downtown buildings with its black exterior and lack of any big signage to declare its presence. Went for a birthday celebration. Our server Jason was really good. Most of us were vegetarians and he walked us through the menu with patience. It was packed for a Friday evening. We had reservations and got a nice booth. I wouldn't have liked the tables , for the shear number of people. We all ordered a drink and a plate. None of us paid less than $80 each. There is tax and then there was hospitality tax and also tip 25% (which I gave) I think food was $40 but tax and tip was another $40. Our friend returned her enchiladas. It was stuffed with 100% carrot bites. The quesadilla was very bland, thank goodness for the spicy sauce. I really think they could have upped their menu with zucchini, broccoli, avocados or asparagus offering. Overall happy with the ambience. The place looks like a bunker from outside but don't let that fool you, there's a lot of natural light inside and you can even see the owl building while you're seating. Such a wonderful hidden gem. And I do mean hidden. We walked by twice and just happened to turn to see the sign at the right time and right angle. Seeing it was around 8pm, the black sign on a black building def didn't help. Once inside. We could see that the glass bricks are sorta one way, where you can see out but not really in. Clever. This has a very dark and intimate setting. We sat at the bar and were the only two there. Durham took great care of us providing ample time to review the menu and offering suggestions. We ordered a bottle of the Riesling and it was delightful. For food we got the suncheese tostado which is made of sunflower seeds with toppings. Very delicious and tastier than expected. Lobster flauta and it was extra crispy, the flavor was great, but if you're sharing, or heck even bitting it, be careful. And the 44 Farms NY Strip steak which was amazing as well. Comedor is an amazing restaurant! Their food is top notch and they often host special running events followed by delicious brunch at the restaurant. I'm mainly familiar with Comedor from their run club, geared toward Austin food industry personnel but welcome to all. Started 6 years ago by chef Philip Speer, the run club strives to "unite minds to achieve life balance and camaraderie through running." Today they held a tough 13-mile run to Mt. Bonnell, in collaboration with global brand Satisfy. It was cold and windy, but the brunch in the warm. hospitable restaurant made up for all the difficult hilly, chilly miles. The brunch buffet featured delightfully prepared light, custard-like eggs topped with cojita cheese, perfectly spiced potatoes, Satisfy-branded corn tortillas, and custard dessert cups topped with blueberries and bananas. We enjoyed a great late night dinner here. The highlights were the aguachile, bone marrow tacos and cocktails. The misses were the quesadilla, a real miss, and the caesar salad, not horrible, just not great (though the croutons were delish!). The aguachile was light, bright, and just the right amount of spicy. The tacos were much heavier, but they were so flavorful and unique. That said, you need to be able to wrap your head around basically eating a FAT taco because that's what it is. Our server talked us in to doing a mezcal luge at the end of dinner? What's that, you ask? (I didn't know either) That is when you do a shot of mezcal from the bone that held the marrow. So gruesome! It was a nice touch though! Don't threaten US with a good time! Overall, awesome meal. Why 4 instead of 5 stars? The restaurant is a little hard to find, and I took in consideration that the salad was meh and the quesadilla was pretty bland with a heavy tortilla. So, I'll preface this review with this place has great food and service. But honestly, I was annoyed with my experience. I heard about the happy hour here so I booked a reservation at 5 pm with my wife. We showed up at 5 pm sharp. Even though the restaurant opens at 5 and we showed up at 5, we ended up waiting about 15 minutes to get seated. Mind you, happy hour is only one hour here. As soon as we sat down, we were handed their food and drink menu. It did not display any happy hour items. We asked our waitress if we could see the happy hour menu. She informed us that you have to sit in the bar area to get happy hour prices and that the bar area was full. So, we made reservations at 5 pm, we showed up at 5 pm and somehow, we were unable to get any happy hour items. The regular menu has the same items as happy hour, but triple the price. We had planned to try more items on their menu. However, once we realized we could not get happy hour prices, we only ordered two food items and no drinks. Two food items alone cost about $60 and didn't fill us up. Personally, I felt bamboozled. I'm not sure why you would promote and advertise a happy hour knowing that happy hour is only available for people sitting in the bar area. The bar area can only fit maybe 10% of the people in the bar. It feels like they try to trick you to come in with advertising happy hour but don't give you the full details on how to get the happy hour items. The food and service were good, but I was so turned off by having to pay triple the price I was expecting to that I'm not sure if I would return. read more

My colleague and I visited Comedor in the Warehouse District of Austin on a business trip, drawn by the strong Yelp reviews. Absent those you reviews, we never would have found it -- the façade is nearly black, and so is the sign, so it's easy to miss -- but the experience is definitely worth seeking out! We sat at the bar and shared several apps tapas-style. I ordered a standout cocktail made with Añejo Tequila -- bold and balanced. We began with tortilla chips, queso and a selection of house salsas - truly authentic and well done. The Bone Marrow Tacos (quelites, smoked butter, pecan gremolata) were exceptional; we liked them so much we ordered another round. The Quesadilla (heirloom masa, mushrooms, quesillo, smoked Fresno salsa) was gourmet and memorable. Order two, they're modest in size. The atmosphere and service both felt elevated yet relaxed. This was our first time dining at Comedor. We were a group of 4. We were seated at the back of the restaurant which gave us a view of the modern glass enclosed section of the restaurant. The margaritas were delicious. Our server was very helpful in guiding us thru the menu to ensure we ordered enough dishes. We did not try their famous bone marrow tacos, but we did enjoy the tacos de pescado, the enfrijolada, which you could add the huitlacoche for and extra $12 but they were out of it. We loved the grilled beets, carrots, papas fritas, and the tacos de res. Despite how satisfied we were we decided to try the Citrus Pavola - the only disappointing thing we had. This is a $$$$ restaurant so if you are wanting to try it, go for Happy Hour, only available at the bar. The entrance can be tricky to find as the building and the sign are black. read more

Wonderful date night - service, food, ambience The first thing you notice about the restaurant is the low hum of talking (because everyone is enjoying the dishes!) My bf and I sat in a booth facing the dining room which made the experience feel a bit more theatrical. Started with the delicate lettuce salad - super tender and nicely balanced with the crunch of the masa croutons. generous portion is plenty for two people. Next, we tried the fish tacos, which were perfectly crisp and served with a refreshing salsa. The star of the show, of course were the bone marrow tacos. We could've easily eaten three more plates of these. The toasted pecan topping makes it filling. Again the homemade masa tortillas are what make the dish extra special. Really enjoyed and had a great meal at Comedor! Located in downtown, so you can either find street parking or do valet which is right next to the restaurant! The interior of the restaurant is really beautiful during golden hour as the light from all the windows above shine and makes for great photos too! It does get dark though inside once it turns to night, which gave it a more intimate atmosphere! There were some ingredients and dishes I was not familiar with, and our server was really helpful with all our questions!! For food we ordered: Cobia crudo: this was probably my favorite dish of the night. Dill with grapes are surprisingly an amazing combination and the fish in the coconut habanero sauce was sooo good! Tacos de Pescado: these are up there with my favorite fish tacos!!! The fish was sooo fresh and the coating was perfectly crispy without being oily or too heavy! The salsa verde on the side brightened up each bite! Solid dish! Papas Fritas: this was good but nothing extraordinary. Kind of felt like the aioli was lacking and would like more spice. NY Strip: This was cooked perfectly medium rare! I loved the negro butter sauce. Perfect for the steak. Loved the turnip and confit on the side too! Comedor is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants with a modern ambiance with amazing food and drinks. The glass brick walls and the modern interior with a patio with doors that open to the outside is a well thought out and functional dining space. We made a reservation for a birthday dinner and sat inside and were greeted by the hosts on arrival and escorted to our table right away without a wait. The service is always above and beyond and this night in particular the server was very attentive and friendly. We started out with the Comedor margarita which is Blanco Tequila, Citrus-Blend, Simple 20% ABV Cointreau and it is one of my favorite margaritas that I have ever tried due to the orange and lime and smoky salt flavor combinations. I was excited to see a mezcal Oaxaca Margarita option on the menu. Oaxaca Margarita Reposado Tequila, Créma Cointreau, Lime, Lemon. For starters, we had the infamous bone marrow tacos with Quelites, Smoked Butter, Pecan Gremolata. This is one of my favorite dishes here but the portion size had been cut by half as we received 2 bones instead of the normal 4, but the price point did not decrease by half. When I mentioned this to the waiter, in a kind gesture they brought another bone to the table. For the main course, we had the 44 Farms NY Strip, Chilhuacle Negro Butter, Turnip, Garlic Tomato Confit. The steak was cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth with a rich savory flavor. NY strip is not my favorite cut of meat and I normally would order the ribeye here but it was no longer an option on the menu, but never disappointed with the NY strip. Had a side carrots with goat cheese which was a nice complement to the meal. Since we were celebrating a birthday, the server brought out a grapefruit dessert that was really good. This was the first time I had tried this particular dessert. Only issue we had was that the staff took our masa tortillas and instead of packing them up to go, they brought out new tortillas and added $6 to the bill which was an unexpected charge. Read some other reviews that the desserts weren't the best - but we loved the Chocolate Tamale. On taste alone 5/5, but the portion sizes are small. 2 crackers for hummus...and 4 meatballs. Our service was amazing once we got to the table, but from walking in the door with a reservation it was about 45 minutes until we had our first bite of food. We waited 15-20 minutes to be seated. Heard other parties complaining as well about the wait-time with reservations, and there were about 15 people waiting on the inside in a small area. Price, portion sizing, and wait with reservations gives this place a weak 4 star for me and would have to be a very special occasion for us to return because it was very good! read more

I held this review for a while hoping Comedore would respond to my email. They never did. So here's what happened. I don't drink. At dinner with colleagues, I pointed directly at the "Sendero" on the menu when our server took my order. He looked and told me it was his favorite drink on the menu. My friend, also sober, arrived a few minutes later, and I recommended it to her based on his enthusiasm. It was so good I couldn't tell the difference -- until I started feeling intoxicated. I pulled the server aside and asked if there was alcohol in our drinks. There was. There are apparently TWO drinks on the menu with the same name -- one alcoholic, one not -- and he'd brought us both the alcoholic version. I never would have caught this on my own; non-drinkers don't read the cocktail list. This ended an almost two-year streak of not drinking for me. I could have been pregnant, on medication, allergic, in recovery, or simply choosing not to drink. The restaurant doesn't get to know which, and shouldn't need to. A menu that uses the same name for an alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink is a problem waiting to happen, and a server who doesn't double-check when a guest points at the non-alcoholic section is the trigger. Then the bill came. I realized only the next day.. they charged us for both the alcoholic cocktails AND the non-alcoholic ones brought as replacements. I emailed the restaurant to give them a chance to respond before posting publicly. Silence. Food aside -- this is a serious service failure with real consequences for sober guests, and the lack of any response after the fact tells you what you need to know. read more

Comedor is a very visually striking restaurant. The modern architecture is both minimal and bold, with clean lines, open space, and a dramatic courtyard vibe. I especially loved the vines climbing the outer walls, a beautiful contrast of softness against concrete. As for the food, there were a few standout dishes. The fish tacos were a highlight--bright, balanced, and wrapped in an exceptional tortilla that really made them shine. I really like their home made tortilla. The mushroom dish was earthy, rich, and full of depth. The bone marrow, while beautifully presented, was a bit too salty and heavily seasoned for me. I missed the clean, unctuous flavor that usually makes marrow such a treat. Dessert was maybe a bit too adventuresome for me, with their chocolate masa not to my taste. read more

This place was INCREDIBLE! We came here for our one year marriage anniversary and it did not disappoint. The aguachiles, bone marrow tacos and Milanese were all standout dishes. I also have to give a shoutout to the incredible banana ice cream dessert. Our server was so nice and helpful and the overall ambiance is really modern and open. This place has the coolest vibe. Super dark interior and neat open patio that backs up to a building, so the whole place feels exclusive. Service was great. If you're not sure what to order, they'll curate a "tasting" for you and bring out (what I assume) is their favorite or most popular dishes. The food I will say was a little bit of a let down. I feel they probably excel at appetizer type plates. The crudo was amazing, but needs bread to soak up some of the sauce, so maybe ask for tortilla shells. I personally loved the fried fish tacos. The bone marrow was the best. It had a pecan topping that made it kind of sweet, but keep in mind it's bone marrow so basically fat/grease. The chicken had a nice crisp on the skin. But needed more side dish. Do not recommend the desserts. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed by the two we tried. One tasted like it had burnt plantains, and the other was a weird 'hard' meringue with fruit and ice cream, I just didn't care for the textures. We came to Comedor for a birthday celebratio. Our food and service was nothing short of amazing. Charlie and the kitchen staff orepared the most delicious items. The presentation was beautifu! The dessert was wonderful, thank you Mo! We had so much fun with our server Zach and everyone that came to our table. Our table was kept clean and ready for the next course. Great food, I loved the interior and ambiance. Service was slightly off in that our server didn't seem to know much about the food menu or drink menu when asked, but apart from that the food was delish. I will be back. This is also a good place to bring a date. read more
