We celebrated our anniversary at ATX Cocina and had an incredible night. The entire restaurant is gluten-free, which is a huge plus, and the food absolutely delivers -- don't sleep on the Hamachi Crudo. Our server Alexa went above and beyond all evening -- he arranged a champagne toast and a beautiful dessert for us, and at the end of the night the staff surprised us with a personalized anniversary card signed by so many of the team. It was a genuinely sweet touch that we weren't expecting. The food was outstanding across the board, but seriously -- order the Hamachi Crudo. You won't regret it. It's actually kind of insane that this place has a 4.2 at the time of writing this review. I literally just ate at a Michelin star restaurant in ATX two days ago. This place is better. Flat out. The food is unreal. The hamachi crudo is the best raw seafood dish I've had in any kind of short-term or long-term memory. The carne asada has a masterful balance of just enough smoky flavor and spice. As someone who's been cooking Mexican cuisine for decades, it's very difficult to properly assess how balanced those chiles will turn out. The pork chop was also unreal. We ate every bit off the bone. We live in NYC and eat nothing but great meals. This place is a standout for us in ATX. Can't wait to come back here when we are back in Austin. read more

Pretty mixed. The enfrijolada I wouldn't get again. It had a strong lemony flavor, especially from the veggies, and it took over everything. I wanted to taste the poblano, ricotta, and mole, but the acidity was too much. Guac was really good. The small slices of jalapeño gave it a nice kick. Chips were way too salty though. Esquites were just okay. I usually like a little sweetness, but these leaned more savory, not really my thing. Queso fundido wasn't for me either. The pickled chiles didn't work, I think onions and tomatoes would've been better. Machete was the best part. Huge portion, really good, and I added corn which made it even better. read more

Had Mother's Day lunch with my son at ATX Cocina. It has a modern high energy vibe. The service was very slow. We had to wait forever to get drinks. Then we were ready to order, which again took forever. She took my order and walked off without even asking my son. We waited for about 15 minutes after we asked for our check. She seemed to be way more attentive to the larger groups around us. I'm usually a very generous tipper...she could have made just as much as the table of four next to us. It seemed as if she wasn't that interested in a table with only two guests. The food was decent but a bit overpriced for the quality. I asked for no peppers in the guacamole, and it ended up being smashed avocado. I've never had quac that didn't have onion, tomato or cilantro. I had the crab tostados. There was a good portion of crab but not much flavor. My son had the chilaquiles. The meat was very flavorful, but the chips on top seemed kind of odd, couldn't really get to the good stuff without moving them. Usually they are on the bottom. ATX Cocina has one of the best happy hours in Austin in terms of food quality! The HH menu is small but curated well! Happy hour is from 5-6pm Monday through Thursday and it gets busy! I started with a strong house margarita and followed it up with a lychee martini (not on the HH menu) The martini was really pretty but tasted more like a strawberry lemonade. Tacos de Pescado and Tacos Alambre were delicious!! I also ordered Hamachi (not on the HH menu) which was the best hamachi I've ever had, seriously! The flavors were tangy, sweet and paired perfectly. I enjoyed the Tacos de Pescado just as much as the hamachi the pickled cabbage was the surprising star of the plate! Our server (Taylor?) was very sweet. She explained the menu well and made great recommendations. Parking is very tricky in the area so I took rideshare! This place was amazing! Highly recommend reservations (that fill up quickly might I add)! Our server, Jordan, was knowledgeable, friendly, on-point and the service is overall awesome among the entire staff. The food was so flavorful and delicious- we ate until we were stuffed! The Caesar salad is huge; 2-3 people can easily share this. The sopes were our favorite appetizer, and the queso fundido is like none I've ever had (those homemade, fresh corn tortillas that come with it are to die for!). The drinks were fabulous (ATX margarita and Paloma are house favorites) and we shared a Patron flight (highly recommend). My husband had the carne asada (perfection) and I had the crab rellano (mind-blowing good!!). Jordan spaced out our meal perfectly throughout the evening! This is a restaurant that my family returns to when we visit Austin. The experience is very elevated and well worth it. Highly recommend starting with guac and freshly fried tortillas. (I look forward to trying the queso next time). As for entrees, I LOVED the carne asada. It was cooked perfectly and flavored so deliciously. The Salmon was also really good, complemented with a miso sauce (a nice mexican-asian fusion). My cousins enjoyed the crab relleno and pescado tacos. The fish of the day was a branzino and it was a whole pound, two large filets, much more than I've ever seen for an entree at any restaurant. We supplemented the meal with the elote, and it was a plentiful portion shared between 4 people. I would recommend dining indoors because the outdoor dining is right on the side of a busy road, so you get the noise, heat, and exhaust of the traffic. read more

4 of my girlfriends and I had a Galentine's Happy Hour dinner here and we loved it! We ordered a bunch of apps to share and selections from their happy hour menu such as the tacos de pescado, tacos alambre, aged beef tenderloin, pickled chiles, with shoestring potatoes (so yummy), flautas and tamales. We also ordered queso fundido from the main menu. Of course, we also had great drinks to go along with our food. Everything was tasty and came out quickly. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is bright and modern, very open and with that being said, can get quite loud. The down side is there is no parking and it is downtown Austin, so that is tricky. It's best to take a car share ride or the city bus. Overall an enjoyable evening. We had a pleasant dining experience overall. I appreciated how well they handled reservations--our table was ready right when we arrived. The restaurant has a modern, airy aesthetic with lots of natural light, which made for a lovely atmosphere. Our server was friendly and attentive. I had to send one of my drinks back because it was overly tart, and he handled it with grace--no fuss at all. The Caesar salad was excellent--bold in flavor and definitely shareable. That said, it was overdressed and ended up a bit soggy. The hamachi crudo was a highlight: fresh, flavorful, and the crispy plantains used to scoop the toppings were a fun and tasty touch. The machete was good, though it had a slight bitterness that we suspect came from the tortilla. I chose this spot specifically for the carne asada, and that ended up being the biggest letdown. While it was reasonably priced and cooked medium rare in the center as requested, the outer edges were overcooked and the meat itself wasn't as tender as I'd hoped. But with that being said, almost everything I had was very delicious. The sopes and hamachi crudo were incredible! Closely followed by the salmon which was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The short rib was cooked well but I'm not sure how I felt about the mole, could take it or leave it. Skip the esquites, very underwhelming. The coco no loco was addictive, I could've had 5. This place was a wonderful spot for a pleasant brunch. The architecture and wooden curved ceilings along with warm inviting atmosphere were very eye catching and welcoming from the get-go. I initially made an outdoor reservation, but changed it to indoor in-person just because it looked so great inside. Fully gluten-free menu, and they accommodated all allergies well. My friend and I had the filet de lomo, guacamole, tetela, huarache, and carne y papas. They were all standouts across the board, but I would say that the tetelas really stood out as a highlight. Very interesting dish unlike anything I've tasted before, and I'd order it again in a heartbeat. It's pretty rare for a vegan dish to win me over so hard as well, but it was truly delicious and unique. The cook on my filet was good. All masa used between dishes were noticeably high quality. Service was attentive. Overall great experience, and my friend repeatedly thanked me for choosing such a good spot. We plan to try Bulevar next, as they're the sister restaurant to ATX Covina and we'd love to have another similar experience. read more

I live within walking distance of ATX Cocina and go there fairly often. The food is consistently very good--the menu is creative and flavorful, and I especially recommend the ATX margaritas and the guacamole with chips. That said, it's not inexpensive, so be ready for downtown Austin pricing. One thing to note: getting in can be surprisingly difficult. The host stand tends to be a bit unwelcoming, and walk-ins don't stand much of a chance. I've found that reservations are a must if you want to avoid the hassle even when it seems like there are plenty of places to sit down. I like the bar and recommend that if you're a party of 1 or 2. The menu was limited, but had a good variety of selection. We got a grilled fish, brussels sprouts, a chicken taco/quesadilla. Everything was very flavorful and fresh. Still a great spot! We came with in-laws from out of town and everyone really enjoyed it. Ambiance is very trendy and upscale without being overly pretentious. They did sit us right behind the hostess stand (like we could reach out and steal menus) which I assume is because we had a toddler--all the other kids were in the same section. Our waitress was great and gave good recommendations. Everything is gluten free and most stuff is dairy free already or easily accommodated. We started with the hamachi crudo, coctel de campechana, guacamole, sopes and queso fundido. They also brought a kids cheese quesadilla for our 1.5 year old. Everything was delicious! Fresh and flavorful. For mains, we got the short rib and tenderloin with the esquites and papas. The short rib was very good, tenderloin was good but nothing spectacular, and the sides were probably my favorite. The sopes and esquites were the stand out items. The only major disappointment was the house margarita. It was watery and sour and lacked much flavor. I think it's cause they use crushed ice rather than proper on the rocks cubes. It was not good at all. My FIL got the Frida Kahlo and I got the Coco No Loco and added tequila and lime--the second round picks were much better. Had dinner at ATX Cocina with some good friends. This was my first time eating here and was a perfect stop on my Austin food tour. This upscale Modern Mexican restaurant is located in Downtown Austin. They have an elevated menu with many excellent options for a tasty meal. I ordered the ibérico pork chop and it was an excellent dish, we had a couple appetizers the hamachi and the coctel de campechana (octopus & shrimp) crudos, both amazing and I had a couple of bites of the other entrees and both were very good. I'd check this restaurant out again and I would highly recommend coming in for an elevated Mexican dining experience. read more

It was a pleasure dining at their sister restaurant Bulevar Mexican Kitchen. When we were invited to a team get together at ATX Cocina, we jumped at the opportunity. We arrived a little early so we could post up to the bar and order a cocktail as my colleagues arrived. I enjoyed the 'House Margarita" if you would. I was at first wondering how it would be, since they were efficient in having it pre-made to make it easy to pour. Suffice to say, no worries. On point and the barkeep remembered not to put salt on the rim as requested. Seems as of lately, there is usually at 50/50 chance salt will be added when I ask for it not to be. Our table was for 14 and tucked in the back of the restaurant to right of the entrance. We ordered up a plethora of their appetizers. Coctel de Campechana, Octopus/Shrimp, tomatoes and chili's were delightful and slightly charred. Hamachi, flavorful citrus, tiger milk, fresno puree notes worked well with the fresh fish. Tamal and Sopes were vegetarian apps and were delight with black beans, farm greens, yogurt and the such. Part of their Masa offerings. We moved on to entree's and I couldn't resist jumping on the Lump Crab Meat stuffed Chile Relleno, with a red, spicy salsa. A generous helping of crab meat, lovely charred relleno. Delicious. We unfortunately had to leave at 9pm, so we missed the dessert opportunity, but from all counts, I'm sure the selections which we able were probably carefully prepared as the rest of the meal. I will say, that while at the bar we met a couple that worked at the Bulevar location, which says a lot for the fair. The service and timing was done to a plomb. They staged the appetizers and explained them as they set them down and when those were almost done, the next wave came in on time. Once the orders for dinner were picked up, they also came out in a timely manner. I was able to snag another margarita, the Frida Kahlo, a creative blood orange margarita and I enjoyed a nice Chile Chardonnay while completing my dinner. If we are downtown, we will be back. Perhaps sit at the bar and enjoy some of their happy hour taco's and rita's from 5-6pm. The restaurant is lively and conversations were hard to have, which is generally always the case when you are sitting in large table, but don't let that deter you from visiting. read more

Came here later at night on a Thursday, around 8:30 pm, it was still busy with most of the restaurant full and only a couple bar seats open. I sat at the bar put in a drink order with the bartender who was a bit short with me. She proceeded to make quite a few other drinks. About 5 minutes later another bartender came up and asked if I needed a drink, and I told him that I already had placed an order, but still was waiting. A few more minutes went by and the first bartender looked over at me, saw I still didn't have a drink, and then began making it. Bit annoying but whatever. I went ahead and put my food order in. I went with the queso fundido and the crab chili relleno. The fundido was a bit more solidified than I've had in other places, so it was a bit harder to scoop up. It also came with tortillas rather than chips which was different than what I'm used to, but the waiter had no problem bringing me some chips as well. There was brisket buried under the cheese and the whole thing was quite delicious. It was also a bit greasier than I've had in the past, obviously it's cheese and is going to be greasy, but the pool on top I feel could have been removed or at least reduced. It's a pretty good sized portion, a good split for two people. The crab chili relleno was a very cool presentation, a big pablano sort of overflowing like a cornucopia with crab. I guess it was stuffed with a cornbread and cheese, it was sort of a soggy mess of stuff on the inside. The plate was swimming in a sauce that I could only describe as something overly sweet and a touch sour. It was very runny, and way too sweet, it completely overpowered everything. The pepper and the crab were delicious but I feel the whole dish would have been so much better without the sauce. It was supposed to be something with charred tomatillos, so I was expecting something closer to a salsa verde, but this didn't taste like it had tomatillos at all. Not sure what happened there. The drinks were good. I got ATX which is just their house margarita. It looked like the mix came out of a draft and then they poured the tequilla into it. It wasn't shaken at all and it really needed a quick shake or at least some stirring to chill it down. Not sure if that's how they always do or the bartender was just rushing since I'd been waiting so long. But the first few sips were quite pungent due to this. I was struggling to get any bartenders attention to get more water and order another drink. Service was pretty terrible even though most of the bar had cleared out by this point. I finally got another drink order in and asked between two which was more direct. The bartender oddly didn't know what I was saying, and I tried to clarify which one is a more spirit forward cocktail. This was the Miguel Hidalgo. A combo of rye whiskey and anejo tequila. Very unique, and went surprisingly well together, really enjoyed this cocktail. Overall the restaurant is pretty and has a nice vibe with a big open air feel. Some small misses on taste and service, and a little on the pricier side, but I wouldn't pass on another meal here. read more

ATX Cocina is a modern take on some classic Mexican flavors. I went there on a Tuesday night, and they were still super busy. Even with a reservation we still had to wait a little bit for our table. They have a large bar at the front where you can sit at to wait for your table, and it was packed as well. The restaurant gives off a warm and engaging atmosphere suitable for a place to meet with friends and socialize over dinner. Their menu has so many appealing options, so we had to ask our server for his suggestions. We decided to go for a more tapas style meal so that we could try more dishes rather than go for their larger dishes. My absolute favorite dish was the Pulpo y Chorizo which consisted of the most tender octopus on top of chorizo and a crispy tortilla. Next favorite were the Sopes. Although it looks like it can be a one or two biter, I'd suggest cutting it up before going in for a bite since each piece is packed with toppings. I'd pass on the Crab Tostadas and the Papas the next time around. The Crab Tostadas had a surprising amount of crab on each piece but otherwise didn't have much flavor to it and just tasted like crab on a chip. The Papas were a bit too sweet for my taste. Based on what I had ordered, it was very hit or miss, but what was good was really good. I'll most definitely come back to try new things and curate a go to menu when visiting.
