Came here for lunch on a weekday. So the place was very quiet. Only a few other tables were occupied. Arriba Abajo as you walked in just gave me all the vibes of a happening place when you want to hang out with friends and have a great time. We ordered the braised ribs rolled tacos for appetizers. It was so fresh and kicking' with all kinds of flavors. I wish I had ordered another one. The avocado sauce layered on the bottom was just enough to keep wanting more. For lunch I ordered the Carneasada Fajitas with chimichurri and my husband ordered the Carneasada Taqueria. With my fajitas came a side of frijoles, green rice & flour tortillas. Corn flour was the other option. Both meals came in pipin' hot & the smell coming from both was very aromatic, zesty & spice. Amazing taste, flavors, just the right amount of marinade on the Carneasada with a hint of lime. It was so delicious while enjoying the ambiance. Our server was a delight and took very good care of us. I came here on a rainy evening to grab some drinks with a few friends. We had originally planned on going elsewhere but it was rained out so we decided to give this a go. Because Arriba Abajo is mainly an outdoor space, they had to move everyone indoors which meant that they were completely booked. Thankfully, we were able to find a few seats at the bar (also super packed). We ended up ordering a pitcher of their passionfruit margarita & their queso. Bith were really good and I liked their unique take on queso (Ive never seen anyone add chimichurri to it before). The bartender was very attentive and informative about any questions we had. One of the main appeals of Arriba is the outdoor rooftop so Ill have to come back to fully enjoy it! read more

This Mexican themed bar and grill in the Thompson Hotel (Tommie) in Downtown Austin is a great escape from the hustle of the city. It's up on the 4th floor next to the roof deck (which means you can place an order to take outside and lounge under a giant umbrella or sneak into the pool (you can reach your arm over the gate). The fish taco and carne asada are both excellent and they have a fantastic drink menu (which is expensive though). Service is mediocre depending on who you get. I've had amazing experience and other times just felt really neglected or ignored...but in general they're good. I really want to go back and try the $150 Mezcal Omakase Japanese experience one day when I get afford it. It's 6 courses with drinks. Let me know if you've tried it. read more

The place is nice to go and have a cocktail and a few bites to eat. Both the inside and outside have ample seating and the outside you get to experience the Austin skyline. The service is very hit or miss. Some of the staff is friendly while some others have the act that that they do not want to be there. The good came out pretty quick but had to track someone down a few times for water. The passion fruit margarita was delicious and perfect for a humid afternoon. The chicken al pastor pizza perfect to share, make sure to order more chimichurri sauce to go with the pizza. The polenta duck was a surprise and filled with flavor. But the five stars is for the guacamole. The Chicken Pibil Quesadilla "Pizza" (chihuahua, cotija, oaxaca, smoked tomatoes, jalapeño, chimichurri, crema, epazote) was good, but the guacamole was stellar, and we are picky. It could have been the pomegranate or the pickled jalapeño or the red onion (all listed on the menu), but I really think they juiced a whole lime. It is like "try to replicate at home" good. Food was good but not extraordinary. I really wanted to like the mushroom taco but the corn tortillas disintegrated. The mushroom itself didn't seem to have any marinade or spices on it. Atleast I could not distinguish any flavor. The mushroom itself was large , not chopped up and bit chewy and meaty. So in addition to soggy tortilla when I bit into taco the mushroom slid out along with toppings. I ended up ditching tortillas and eating mushroom + filling with my knife and fork. Cocktails were delicious as were chips and guacamole. I think I would definitely come back for drinks and apps but given I don't live in Austin that may be a while away. Such a cute spot! I came here with a girlfriend to hang out and have a light bite, and we were so surprised by how good the fajitas were. Beyond the food, the overall aesthetic of the restaurant is just beautiful. The service was very nice as well and gave great recommendations on food. My family had dinner here this past weekend. The setting is really nice. Mexican themed but upscale and trendy. The service was very good. The food was generally good but not great. We had: Quesadilla Pizza (4/5) - Wasn't sure quite what to expect. The portion size of this dish is HUGE. It didn't taste like a qusadill nor a pizza. More like a very hearty dish served on top of a flatbread. Pretty good though. Guacamole (4/5) - Generally a good version of a guac. Pretty tangy and I really liked the flavor/texture of the added pomegrantes on top. Prawn Fajita (4/5) - The server did tell us when we ordered that although it says prawns, expect more normal sized shrimp. Appreciated that heads-up and she was absolutely right (so why call it this on the menu)? Well flavored and cooked. The side of rice and beans did not add much to this dish (not good versions of these). My wife had the duck carnitas - duck cooked like carnitas served on top of a bed of polenta. The place is pretty, the staff were attentive, the noise level was a medium but the food just wasn't what I had hoped. The battered fried shrimp were mainly all battered. first thoughts "this place is a vibeeee" and boy was I right. We hadn't made reservations for this Friday night @ 6 pm but luckily it wasn't a big issue, now we didn't get a sit down service table but were able to sit at any of the tables or bar tops where we could go up for the bar to order food/drinks. & that was perfect & really all we needed. We settled for the outdoor bar since we had 2 other people joining us. We came at the perfect time as the restaurant started filling up 45 min after and would have been impossible to find a seat. Chips and salsa were delicious though only one salsa really was good the rest were subpar. The chips however were fantastic (not enough though and we had to order more). Now for the mezcal margs we ordered... they know how to make a mezcal marg probably one of, if not the best I've had. However I will note the bartenders that night weren't the friendliest, each time I went to order I waited patiently and often they met me with direct eye contact and just moved on to someone else and even just stood behind the bar. As a first time customer I was confused as I thought "maybe I was supposed to order somewhere else?" No- that's exactly where I was supposed to go so it was a tad uncomfortable and though I don't expect the bartenders to be conversationalist I do expect a warm and welcoming tone and unfortunately that just wasn't the case. Now, though the service wasn't the best the vibes, drinks, and company we had made it a great time! We had a long day and were really hungry, Yelp brought us here! The patio seems to be a good touch on beautiful days or nights, huge, spaced out from other tables to still enjoy private dinners and beautiful decorations. The inside is nicely accented with decorations as well! Even though the place is pretty big we understood that of course they wouldn't seat where they didn't have staff to cover, I'm not sure what happened between communication but it seemed the host was a little annoyed we were there. He had a slight arrogance or attitude when communicating. We ignored and continued to enjoy our evening, after being seated our server was great! I would give this place no stars if I could. Never before have I felt so unwelcomed at a restaurant. It was a Saturday night, and my friends in I were downtown looking for somewhere to eat. We found their sign down on the street and decided to try them. Immediately upon walking in, we felt unwelcomed. We waited 10 minutes at the front desk for someone to even address us, and then were told to wait while they cleared off a table for us. Twenty minutes later, we went back up to ask about the table and were actually told by the staff that they forgot about it. Finally a table was set for us and we sat down. We all ordered drinks and asked for water at this point. The water was brought, but we waited and waited for our drinks. After another 20 minutes and watching the bartenders (who were not busy this evening) make no moves to make our drinks, we got up and left. I have never had such an experience at a restaurant before. I absolutely love coming to Arriba Abajo. My girlfriend and I come here often and have tried almost everything on the menu at this point, and we've never been disappointed. Some of our favorite dishes are the duck and the salmon -- both are amazing and full of flavor. The drinks are also incredible. Our favorite is the Arriba carajillo... wished more ppl ordered this since they don't make much of it , which has a horchata flavor and is honestly one of the best drinks we've ever had. The atmosphere makes it even better. Sitting outside on the rooftop patio with the view and great music makes the whole experience perfect. I found this place online and we were really excited to try it out. Overall, the food was good! I had the Lobster Quesadilla Pizza and absolutely loved it, super fresh and delicious. We also enjoyed the guacamole, chilaquiles, milanesa de pollo torta, ceviche, and the tuna crudo. Unfortunately, my friend ordered the Steak & Egg Fajitas, but the steak was burned (we actually asked medium cooked) and she couldn't eat it. We went at around 1PM on a Saturday! There is no parking attached to the building we parked across the street (Paid Street Parking) There is indoor and outdoor seating. I absolutely loved my experience at Arriba Abajo. As soon as you enter, you can hear the music and feel the vibes. The restaurant has a beautiful outdoor section filled with couches and tables. There's even a pool if you want to go for a swim and obtain a day pass. There's great ambience. For food, I'd recommend the Lobster Quesadilla Pizza, Carne Asada Fajitas and Chile Crusted Prawns. My husband and I stopped at a restaurant located in the hotel we were staying at in Austin called Tommie Austin. For an appetizer, we ordered shrimp ceviche, which came with chicharrón. I had never tasted anything like it--it was so good that I didn't want to share with my husband! The service was excellent; our waitress, Jordan, was the best! We made reservations to celebrate a friend's birthday and really enjoyed the overall vibe and food. The restaurant is located inside the Thompson Hotel downtown, which is chic and classy. We shared the barbacoa flautas and carnitas tacos, both were delicious! The only downside was the inconsistency around bringing in an outside cake. We had been told there would be a fee, which we were fine with, but when we began cutting a few slices ourselves, the manager (who mentioned she was new) took the cake away and said only the kitchen could cut it. Later, we noticed the table behind us cutting and serving their own cake without issue. This inconsistency left a sour note on what had otherwise been a great experience. We did, however, appreciate the younger staff member who listened to our concerns on our way out and was very apologetic. Her kindness helped end the night on a more positive note. read more

There should be clear indicators that you guys run up the music quite loud when it's still the evening. We had a 6:30pm reservation and it was a small group of girls for a birthday. Around 7pm the music that was perfect turned off and a DJ started playing and it was so loud that a few of the girls had to leave. It was very hard to have any conversation and was distracting. I would say without that, it would have been a stellar experience. My friend and I came to the Thompson Hotel for a Don't Tell Comedy show. Since the doors didn't open yet, we decided to grab a drink at Arriba Abajo while we waited. It happened to be prom night, so the staff let us know there weren't any available tables, but bar seating and open spots were first come, first served. We were fine with that and ordered mocktails at the bar. Service was quick and the staff was friendly. The bartender even gave my friend a heads-up not to lean on the counter because of sticky residue, which was thoughtful and appreciated. The drinks were great and the vibe was relaxed. It wasn't too loud so it's a nice spot for a casual date or a night out with friends. The space itself is also really cute. We used valet at the Thompson, which I believe was $16 for the first 1 to 3 hours. After that, it's a flat $30. Not $16 plus $30, just $30 total. It worked out for us since we were able to split the cost and didn't feel like dealing with parking. read more
