Boy do I wish it had been a drinking day when I was at Mezcal and Salt! * * * Mezcal and Salt is a nicely furnished midscale Mexican restaurant on Montopolis Drive. The clientele is working class but the room feels middle class all the way. By day the place gets tons of sunlight making it a cheery happy place. By night, there are colorful neon lights to keep the festive spirit alive. * * * The house specialty is Mezcal cocktails. They make no fewer than 10 of them. I have not seen any of these in any list of house drinks I have ever seen. Even though the establishment is called Mezcal and Salt, They only stock three kinds of Mezcal. I will make two ignorant guesses: a) Those three Mezcals are chosen because they have different tastes. The house cocktails use each of the three for specific purposes in making specific drinks. b) Those house Mezcal drinks are probably wonderful. The waitress bubbled enthusiastically about one of her favorites. I don't think she was giving a canned sales spiel. I think she meant it and she loves the drink. * * * There would be no reason for waitresses at Mezcal and Salt to ever need to give canned sales spiels. The establishment draws large crowds. At 3:30 pm on a Sunday towards the end of the Almeurzo del Domingo rush, there were still plenty of people in the restaurant. More importantly, new customers kept coming in. There is a giant vacant lot next to the restaurant with signs marking the lot as extra parking. A restaurant only buys a next door lot for parking if they really need it. * * * I was food only that day. What I had was a mix - but a mix that was good enough to make it easily worthwhile to come back. My chips and salsa were perfectly adequate but no great shakes. My ceviche tostada started as being no great shakes. But they had lime and bottled Salsa Victoria on the table. They had the lime and Salsa Victoria on the table for a reason. Once you put lime and Salsa Victoria on the tostada The tostada went from ho hum to great eating. I went from bored to in love. You don't blame a Southern restaurant for putting salt and pepper on your table and serving you under-salted food. You put on your own salt and pepper and then everything is perfect. The same applies with lime and Salsa Victoria here. It is part of the kitchen's plan. * * * I totally want to come back on an occasion when I can dig into those Mezcal drinks. Since I would have a long drive home, The rest of the plan would be eating my way through a decent chunk of their menu. * * * Any place that needs two parking lots to hold all their customers has to be taken seriously. read more

We forget how close this place actually is to Manor...we both went the Lunch size Carne plate..one with Beans and Corn Tortillas the other was double rice and flour tortillas...Flour wins hands down...Service was fantastic, friendly and attentive. Our next visit will be for breakfast. read more

My colleagues and I came here for lunch one day. We were excited to see this place being built. At first thought the bundling wasn't going to make during the construction process, but it finally was finished. They have a drive thru and available parking in the open lot next door. First off this place is very open and spacious, definitely great for groups. They even have an open bar as soon as you walk in. For the food it was very delicious and worth every dollar spent. It is expensive; however, their portions are the value. You won't leave this place thinking it was expensive and not worth it. Again, the food was worth every dollar spent. Lemonade was fresh and free refills. This was a plus for us because we are used to being charged for each refill with competitors in the Austin area. The staff here all friendly, very welcoming, and they are very attentive to your needs. I am planning on coming back again with more colleagues and bring my family here one day. read more

The hostess greeted us as soon as we walked in with a smile. It just recently opened and everything is brand new inside. The bar is fully stocked and the drinks looked really good. We had appetizers and taco plates. Everything came hot and was delicious. I came for lunch and they have lunch specials and drink specials. All the staff were very friendly. The restroom was big and clean. Our family will be coming back to try more of the menu. read more

Traveling through town and saw this across from the gas station. Breakfast tacos are huge and stuffed. The Barbacoa and Carne Quisada tacos were amazing. Will stop by when back in town. Friday margaritas! Queso was ok kinda thick and clumpy I give it a 3 out of ten I had the crispy tacos with rice and beans and the refried were an absolute 10! Margarita did its job and gave me a good buzz! Whole experience I would rate a 5 out of 10! I'm so impressed with the quality of food and especially the impeccable service of this restaurant. We had a very large group for a birthday dinner, the group unexpectedly kept growing. The staff was very accommodating and professional in dealing with my boisterous family. The food was fresh, hot, and delicious. Solid lunch place if you want a heaping portion of -insert whatever Mexican dish you like- in a nice, clean pleasant environment. The flavor wasn't ground breaking, but I have no complaints. Underwhelming first time experience. Stopped in Monday around 4pm and was really excited for this place to open. Pros: Friendly hostess, quick seating and comfortable booths. Skirt steak plate was juicy and potatoes had just the right amount of crispiness. Cons: The queso compuesto (not pictured) was swimming in grease and was very watery. Grilled chicken plate was dry despite the sauce and lacked seasoning. Will be back once they work out the opening kinks to update my review. Awesome tacos, cheap beer and great service. I can only speak concerning the tacos as my wife had fish tacos, I enjoyed skirt steak tacos and my son had ground beef kids tacos. All fresh and delicious with a variety of salsas. Model oro was on special for $2 a beer, top shelf margaritas were a little steep at $18. Service was fast and friendly! read more

Went here for lunch and the place was busy. The decor is nice, although more contemporary-style than Mexican. Service was friendly, attentive, and efficient. However, the food was quite bland. With so many options in Austin, there is just no reason to settle for that. The worst part was that they nickel and dimed us for everything. We asked if the unusual cubes in the chicken tortilla soup were cheese (they were), and ended up with a plate of shredded cheese to the tune of $2. They asked if we wanted more (not "another") horchata when the glass was only half-empty. Answering yes cost us more money. All in all, it was almost $53 after tax and tip for 2 people for items from the lunch menu plus non-alcoholic drinks. If they can continue to get business with these tactics, more power to them, but it won't be from me. read more

My husband took me here for my birthday. We arrived during happy hour, which was surprisingly slow, we had the whole place to ourselves. The drinks were very tasty and went down easily. We had top shelf margaritas. we had guacamole for appetizer and shared the beef and chicken fajitas. They were exceptional.! read more

The first time I went here was the first week of Grand Opening. My son and I were excited to try this out. The lunch menu was great with lots of choices. I had the chili verde chicken enchiladas and I really liked it. My son had some kind of smothered burrito with queso. He wasn't too impressed with the taste. So the experience was favorable for that first week. I told a relative about this place and we decided to meet for lunch about 3 weeks after my first visit. There were 3 of us there for lunch. The menu had changed and it didn't have as many choices and the chili verde chicken enchiladas were no longer available on the menu. The server said they updated their menu based on their first few weeks. So I ordered a different item that I was not satisfied with on the flavor and my order two companions ordered different items and were not at all satisfied. So we were all disappointed. The service however was good, nothing wrong with the waitress, but I would definitely say that the problem was with the quality of the food. I probably wouldn't go back read more
