Barbacoa Tacos on the right
Minh D.

This place serves tasty tacos with homemade soft tortillas. Their chips and salsa after 11am is free and salsa is amazing. I love the Barbacoa tacos. The server was kind and attentive and price was reasonable. The place could have been a little cleaner though.

It's really more a three and a half star than anything. Fine, but not great. Got Carne gusada on flour and shredded chicken on flour. The Gusada was better than it looked, since it looked like bologna chunks, instead of beef. Tasted OK, only moderately tender. It's amp on it for me. The chicken was better. Seasoned well. Substantial portion. $3.50 for each and two was a meal. Where it really fell short were the floor tortillas. Thickness was fine, but they didn't try to warm or crisp them up at all. Bland. Will try again for breakfast.

Mole enchiladas

Took my friends to dinner on Wednesday. The chips and salsa are good! They both ordered the enchiladas one beef and one chicken dinner. They both enjoyed their meals. I asked the server about the mole. She said it was good so I ordered the Mole enchiladas. I overheard some discussion from the kitchen and I think they didn't have more or something. My limited Spanish. The dish took more time while my friend's were eating so I guess they had to make some mole. It was not very good! The enchiladas were smaller than my friends and had little meat inside. The sauce was not reminiscent of moles in the past. Disappointed e ordered a carne guidada taco. The meat was tender but the sauce was off. The margaritas were large and good. I had not been to this Taqueria Arandas before but I had enjoyed other locations in the past.

Coffee and salsa

My recent obsession! I find myself frequently thinking about the chilaquiles quite often. (Pro tip if you order the red sauce and carne asada) The cozy interior and friendly waitresses remind me of the taquerias on the east side growing up. The prices here reflect that time too. You can order a breakfast that feeds two and a cup of coffee for under $20. And complimentary chips and salsa! The parking is easy, they have a main parking lot as well as a few extra spots to the side of the building. The also take cash, card and ApplePay!

Carne Guisada

The food quality has changed. I ordered Carne Guisada. The beef was dry. The sauce was barely any. The rice was cold. There was more juice than Charro beans. The food used to be really good. The service was good. Prices are still reasonable. The restaurant is still nice and clean. I used to recommend but not anymore.

I've driven by El Alma many times being in the Austin area, but I never went until last Thursday, and after surviving a brief monsoon, I was glad to get a few drinks and eat some good TexMex with my large party just before a wedding. The best way to describe El Alma is that it is TexMex that is Austinified. Everything feels a little more unique and special than your classic TexMex options. I started off with a Mezcal Margarita that put a little hair on my chest and got me going. My group ordered two of their Nachitos, which were these nice nachos. For my main entrée, I got 3 Al Pastor tacos on corn with a side of their rice and beans. Their pastor was served with pineapples, onions, and cilantro with limes on the side. They were great and I immediately crushed them all. I thought their rice and beans were pretty good as well and a step above the typical TexMex rice and beans. The server was pretty attentive throughout our whole visit, and I honestly have no complaints about what they had to offer. Pricing on the meal and drinks was pretty standard for Austin, and I didn't think anything really took me out of the experience. On top of that, for being in Barton Springs, there is quite a bit of parking. I would love to come back at some point in the future and hang out on their rooftop bar because that seems like a lot of fun. Shoutout to El Alma for being a TexMex oasis saving me from the MoPac traffic. RIYL: TexMex, but better than your average

As I was leaving my hotel I bumped into some coworkers outside and mentioned I was heading here for dinner. A person passing by overheard me and stopped to rave about how they're the best tacos you can get in Texas. The speakeasy feel was awesome and relatively easy to find despite this being my first visit to Austin. I had the carne asada tacos and they were delicious. I also ordered a side of chips and salsa but my weak tastebuds embarassingly couldn't handle the spice. Seating was limited but I was carrying out anyways. Everything was seriously delicious, rich, and flavorful. The meat was juicy and tender, and they were very generous with the portions. If all the seats inside are taken inside the restaurant, you can dine in the bar area or outside in the alley. This taco speakeasy spot is so good, we came back the next day with our friends. We will definitely be back in the future!

So we were thinking of tacos or Mexican food and my daughter suggested this spot as she had come here with some friends and really enjoyed their sopecitos. I had never had a sopecito! What is that! So we had to try... We were lucky to arrive at the right time (9 pm!) where we got their last table!! Make reservations or something because this is another one of those places that fills up! So- we were taken care of immediately: chips and some very hot salsas were set on the table while we chose. They menu is in QR code format, but we asked and got paper menus as well. Well I got the chicken sopecitos , my daughter got the pork ones and my partner got the meat tacos. Everything was delicious, the food arrived promptly, the portion size was perfect and bountiful and everything was super enjoyable. I really enjoyed trying some New Mexican favorites. Next time I will try some other delicacies since I always get tacos tacos burritos or quesadillas: time for some new items on the menu! Enjoy!
