I've been going to this Maudie's location on South Lamar for years, and at this point I know exactly what it is and what it isn't. I always think it's important to set expectations. If you're looking for a polished, design-forward Tex-Mex spot with a modern vibe, this isn't that. The interior is older and a little worn in. The patio gets the job done, but it's sitting right on Lamar, so expect traffic noise. It's loud, it's casual, and it feels comfortable being exactly what it is. What it does offer is consistency and ease. We can walk in at pretty much any time, including weekends, and get a table without thinking too hard about it. Service is fast in a way that feels intentional but it's not rushed. Orders come out quickly, things are rarely missed, and the staff is consistently friendly without overdoing it. Food-wise, it's a mix of dependable staples and a few personal go-tos. The chips and salsa are solid, the mango frozen margaritas are reliably good, and I always come back to Pete's tacos and the enchiladas perfecto. The fajitas are fine, but not THE reason to come here if that's your thing. The real value for us is how usable the place is with kids. We can come straight from school pickup, get seated immediately, hand a kid a crayon, and have food on the table fast. There's no pressure to linger, no pressure to dress up, and no sense that you need to "match" the space. You can just show up. It's also one of those places that feels very Austin in an older, less curated way. TVs are on, games are playing, and the crowd tends to skew more local and low-key. No one is staging photos or trying to turn dinner into content. It's not the best Tex-Mex in town and it's not trying to be. It's the place you go when you want something predictable, relaxed, and quick-n-easy without having to think about it too much. read more

I came in for a margarita to kill some time before going to Alamo to watch a movie. I got my drink directly at the bar but couldn't stay there long because the smell of the kitchen was so overwhelming. It smelled so unclean, like old decomposed oils and food and cleaning solutions. It was bad. My margarita was also not good, I think I got the Gills one, 2nd down on the options for Margs. It was mostly ice and just didn't taste good at all. I waited to use the restroom and a staff member left the restroom before I entered. It was dirty inside and the whole sink was covered in water and there was dust on most of the surfaces. To me, it just seems like the employees probably hate working there if they don't take a moment to tidy up the restroom of the place they are employed. It just seems like an old run down restaurant with stale air, old furnishings, gross carpets and unhappy employees. read more

They have a pretty decent selection of appetizers for $6 each and $7.75 Signature Margs. I went with the Nachos Supreme and Mexican Martini. The Mexican Martini is a great deal since it comes in a shaker. You get about 3-4 drinks out of it. They don't have a super huge parking lot to park, but you can try to find some parking on the street. read more

This is the "weird uncle" location in the Maudie's chain. It's not slick like the other locations. It's a little divey but the folks are nice. You can tell half the clientele are regulars. Same menu as the others. Chilaquiles is still the go to for breakfast. Add grilled Serranos and it's on point. Good lunch specials. Enchiladas or the really good chile relleno for dinner. I was in Austin for SXSW and Maudie's Too came highly recommended by a former local, so I hopped a Lyft to have lunch. It totally wasn't worth the hassle and expense. I was hoping for tasty Tex-Mex since I was in Texas, but this place disappointed me in every way imaginable. The "dive bar" vibe is casual and comfortable, with a good-sized outdoor patio. We sat inside since it was a nice day and the patio was packed. This isn't a fancy atmosphere, and usually that's a sign of killer good food. The food here, though, is just okay. I'd more accurately call it "mediocre." We ordered queso and chips, chicken fajitas, enchiladas, and a margarita. Nothing was anything to write home about, and it was standard-issue fare. The fajitas looked like they came out of a bag, and the veggies didn't have that nice caramelized texture. The biggest travesty of all: the tortillas are not homemade. The black beans were disappointing, as was the queso (looked like something I could've made at home with a package of Velveeta). The enchiladas were the best thing about the meal. If you're seeking authentic style food with tons of spice and flavor, you're going to be disappointed in Maudie's Too. Even the margarita was forgettable. We went here for an early dinner with our son and daughter in law on a Saturday. We arrived and were quickly seated (chips and salsa were being brought to the table as we sat down) and asked for our drink order. Our drinks we brought out quickly and the server then took our orders. We had guacamole and queso as appetizers which were plenty big enough and delicious. Our food arrived quickly and everything was hot and tasty. The el jefe tamales (my wife's dish) were served with beans and rice. The flavor was great, but it was odd that they were not wrapped in corn husks. The beans and rice were both flavorful and went well either way the tamales. The fajita tacos were well seasoned and very tasty (according to my son) and the quesadilla was very good and stuffed either way delicious filling. I had the chicken chile rellano which came with rice and beans and a couple hot flour tortillas. The beans and rice were very tasty. The rellano was served open face stuffed with shredded chicken and topped with cheese. It was ok, but the chicken lacked full flavor and the cheese sauce was a bit runny. I received great, accommodating service here. I arrived before a rush of people. My meal hadn't arrived and I was ordering dessert. So I was at the table a while. I was feeling pressure from myself to speed up due to the number of people waiting, so I apologized to my server. She very kindly and *genuinely* told me that there was no reason to rush, I should enjoy my meal. No pressure for me to move along to free the table. My quesadilla was delicious! The chicken was cooked just right, and the cheese melted completely. There was a great deal of pico on the side provided as well. My sopapillas were fried perfectly and bigger than I anticipated! A very delicious way to end my meal. Finally, a chip and salsa comment--we all know we judge places on the quality of these! The service is good and they have a decent happy hour but I just can't get behind their food and it might just be due to the fact that I don't love their version of Tex Mex. Salsa has a great kick to it - and chips are perfectly cooked and crunchy. I used to love coming here with my friends for drinks and food. It's been a minute. After seeing some films, I stopped here for a late lunch before heading home. There were only a few tables, albeit one of 6-8, but service was quite slow to get my menu and drink order. I got a Fajitas and Greens Salad which wasn't the best. I don't know why I expected this place to be authentic or of quality. The salsa provided with the complimentary chips is always a dead giveaway for what you're about to receive, and this salsa was basically tomato sauce out of a can. No miscellaneous chunks of tomato, onion, cilantro, or peppers, just tomato sauce The prices seemed honest, but once I received my meal I realized why they were suspiciously lower than expected. I ordered the "Mexican Special", which comes with a "crunchy beef taco" and "guacamole salad". The beef taco was just plain ground beef in a plain taco, nothing else, and the guacamole salad was basically a dollop of guac out of an ice cream scoop with some shredded lettuce and chunks of tomato on top. The rest of the meal was two enchiladas with plain refried beans and plain rice, which wasn't bad, but it's kinda hard to mess something up when it's completely drenched in cheese. The service was fine, we were constantly checked on, I don't have any complaints there. They were nice and made sure we had everything we needed. The ambiance on the other hand was subpar. The main room is way too small for the amount of tables they have shoved in there, and it felt like a constant battle to yell louder than the table next to you just to hear your own party. Overall I'm hesitant to say it was overpriced, but it was definitely not of the quality I was hoping for. I would have liked more care to be put into spices and seasonings to give the food more flavor. I don't have experience with the financial logistics of running a restaurant, but I've definitely had tastier and more satisfying dishes for the same price I paid for this meal, so I know there's room for improvement in some capacity. read more
