We were in town for a short trip before heading down to Mexico City so I had it in my mind that I'd hold off on all mexican food until then but my sister-in-law found this place one morning and said the breakfast looked good so we headed over. It was a little far out from where we were staying but I liked that it gave us a chance to check out another area of Austin. The building is set up nice and stands out with its bright yellow exterior and cool Virgen mural. They have a nice outdoor eating area and a good amount of indoor seating and the restaurant was clean throughout with a laidback feel. The menu is well laid lout with clear descriptions of everything. Loved that they had all day breakfast and the ability to pick tacos or burritos as well as tortilla type. I was very intrigued by the puffy taco option as I don't see that on many menus back home. My brother and his wife ordered breakfast tacos and burritos and I ordered a puffy taco with cochinita pibil. We all liked our food and I was happy I went with the puffy taco as it was really tasty. The cochinita pibil was pretty good too but I've had better. The salsas really helped make the tacos better though and the sandía agua fresca was refreshing. read more

Food: Precooked and thrown together, so cold. (Store was freezing, 85 outside, condensation on glass, had to get a jacket out of the car). Service: Menchaca location cashiers must make minimum wage because they are telling customers "we don't have change". I hear this every time I go into this restaurant. They keep your change, only give you bills back if due. This is a deceptive practice that borders on thievery. I observed this happen multiple times while I sat in the location. I didn't notice if there was a tip jar. Tips should not be stolen, they should be based on the food and service provided. So, if you don't want your hard earned change flat out stolen from you, bring change so that they will have some. I doubt this will change their practice. I have notified Carlos R. with a voicemail. Man, I haven't written a review in a while, but I ordered some queso, a potato, egg, and cheese taco, and, most importantly, the chilaquiles. The queso was good but not great. I think I'll like my queso a little less thick and more spices. The taco was also good but not special. The chilaquiles, though! Oh my goodness, I chose the verde salsa, and it was delicious and honestly tasted better and provided more food than $8 can get you just about anywhere in Austin. It comes with scrambled eggs and a side of beans. The black beans were great, the chilaquiles also come with avocado (right?! amazing). I feel like I've now done my public service. read more

It was fine. The food was fine... except the chips- they're soggy. The drinks were fine- had the horchata aguas frescas. The service was fine. It's a small joint with limited seating, so it's a bit sterile in the atmosphere department, but it's fine. It is nice they have vegan queso (and regular) and farm eggs. I'm glad I checked the burrito before biting in, because not only was it late, but the only two items I selected to be excluded were on the burrito. I mean, it's written right there on the bag? They aren't easily removable like tomato on a burger either, so I wasn't able to eat the burrito. I like to use LunchDrop to try new places that I can also enjoy on my time off work, but I will not be going to El Chilito. To all my fellow vegans and meatless eaters, all you need to know is the Brentwood from El Chilito. Get it in burrito or taco form (which can be made with a corn, wheat, or puffy shell) and enjoy a fresh medley of sauteed spinach, mushrooms, potatoes, avocado, and pico de gallo. No need to omit or replace anything, which is a lovely thing. The chips (fried in house) and charred salsa are also quite lovely if you want something snacky to go with the meal. I tend to order delivery because I'm lazy AF these days, but even then, service is crazy fast and always comes in hot. It's a foolproof choice when in need. read more

I want to be transparent, my companion ordered food from here after a night of debauchery, so this review is based upon the 'morning after' taste buds. We ordered an amalgamation of things to include a variety of tacos, chips, salsa, black beans, etc. However, I specifically ordered (for me only) the carne asada taco and chips and salsa. Carne Asada taco I added fresh jalapeños to give my entree a little AM pick me up. Unfortunately, the jalapeños could not save the dried-out meat nor could the slathering of charred tomato salsa a top the taco. Perhaps this was an 'off-day' for this spot or maybe it was just me? Went in for a plant based burrito or taco and was sad to find out that the one I had originally wanted had been taken off the menu, however!! The super friendly staff helped me to pick another option, which I really enjoyed. The burritos are huge and super affordable! What I enjoyed about the one I tried was how vegetable heavy (and tasty) it was, coupled with beans and rice. Hoping they bring back the plant based queso, but until they do I'll be coming back for good vibes and guacamole. I pick up for Lunchdrop (a lunch delivery for businesses) as a side gig and EVERY single time I pick up here they are on time, friendly, and I'm offered a drink (Can I get you a coffee, tea or water?"). No other place in almost 3 years of picking up lunches at restaurants does that happen. They are kind and thoughtful humans!! I don't remember signing up for emails, but somehow I got a marketing email from el chilito that they have $5 burritos on Wednesdays, so I went. I got the La tinga (spicy chicken) burrito. It was decent but not the best tinga I've ever had. It had the chicken, rice, beans, and lettuce. I also got churros for dessert and those were pretty good. Let me start with the service - the man that checked me out is tall with a beard and wore a hat ( didn't get his name ) but he provided one of the best customer service experiences I've had in a while. Super flavorful & all tacos are $3 on Tuesday. I tried a chipotle chicken and carna asada. The tortilla chips are very tasty as well! The moment I took a bit, I wanted to order 2 more to go. Ordered here to go and they messed up the order. My partner is vegetarian and they gave them a chicken taco. My shrimp taco was bland and had a bad taste. None of the tacos were labeled so it was hard to know what was what. The service was not friendly and I felt like a burden coming to get my order. There is plenty of parking, and restaurant was clean, and these things matter, but the quality of the food also matters. The tortillas were so dry and crumbly on my taco, that they fell apart, there was not much filling inside of the taco, so I definitely do not recommend the tacos here. I guess I can say I do recommend the Horachata, its delicious :) I am concerned, that the staff did not get the cashier or let the cashier know when we wanted to order more food. Did not acknowledge us and just walked past us multiple times. While we stood and waited up to five minutes, until the cashier came back. So, there is a red flag, and I do not think this is something that happens all the time at this restaurant. However we ordered chips and queso, and took some of it home. There was an actual staple embedded inside of one of the chips, luckily we saw it so we did not eat it and swallow something metallic like this. But this goes to show quality of care in the food is not good. Will not return soon. read more
