I hadn't been to a Torchy's location in ages, so while I was visiting Austin I had to stop my to get my fix. Earlier in the day I had already been to Velvet Tacos, so I was able to do a more direct comparison. It wasn't like I remembered, the hot sauce on the side is still pretty good, but the tacos themselves were fairly bland and very bean heavy in flavor. The service was fast and the staff was friendly, the ambiance was nice too, but definitely not worth it in my opinion unless you're right by it and very hungry. Nice big clean space with friendly staff. I went in between lunch and dinner and ordered two tacos, the brushfire and the crossroads along with chips and queso to share. The brushfire was just okay, it sounded more flavorful than it tasted (Jamaican chicken with jalapenos, mango and sour cream) but the crossroads was delicious. There was a decent amount of brisket and when you added the sauce it came with on top it was super flavorful. Really solid taco. I think I also just like corn tortillas more than flour in general. i love torchy's for their tacos and queso. i recommend the beef fajita with the green chilli queso and chips. their queso is so creamy and rich with flavor. however, i recently went to try one of their torched bowls due to a promotion of getting it for free. i was sadly disappointed. there are only a few options, so i tried the moon tower with grilled shrimp. i enjoyed the flavor of the grilled shrimp but overall was not satisfied with the bowl. it was okay but wasn't filling and i wouldn't be happy to pay $12 for it. service was friendly and inside was clean with lots of seating areas. would highly recommend recommend their tacos and queso not so much their bowls. read more

According to the big guy with the glasses the queso being a third filled up is acceptable and I need to stop complaining. I went over smiling to let him know but he wasnt having it. Apparently it gets docked from his check for a fully filled container that I paid for. Then had the audacity to come over with my full order said he put an extra queso in the bag, with an attitude. A taco chain that came with a lot of recommendations, but ended up being a touch disappointing. The menu is a bit overwhelming with taco names that don't say a whole lot about what each taco is. I waited to use the kiosk to order so I could see some pictures and better grasp what was on each taco. Started off with some chips and queso, queso was actually really good and came with a huge amount of chips, this was actually my favorite part. Then I waited for probably close to 15 minutes. It was 12:30 but there was only one person in front of me when I got there and the restaurant was only about half full, thought it would be faster than that. When I got the tacos the meat was actually room temperature, not hot at all, and with the toppings being cold, the whole thing felt like it had been sitting out for a while. That definitely took a huge hit to these not tasting that great. One of the tacos I got was the Democrat. A beef barbacoa which was by and far my favorite one. This was a pretty big taco compared to the ones I'm used to in San diego and there was a good amount of meat on there. Would recommend this one. The next taco was a specialty one for December called the Swinger. It was achiote pork with grilled pineapple and some other toppings. Again the meat was almost chilled, the grilled pineapple completely took over the flavor of everything. The meat didn't really taste like it had much flavor, it was kinda fatty, and not crisped up at all, more of a chewy texture. Wasn't great. Finally the fried avocado taco. This one I most excited about and it was hands down the worst one. Here all the ingredient were cold. There's basically just a salad on top of lettuce, tomato and ranch, way too much. There's refried beans on the bottom which weighed too much, tore the tortilla and just were a bland mush adding nothing to this taco. The fried avocado literally was just two small pieces on half the taco, after two bites I opened it up and sifted through the lettuce to find nothing else in there. Very disappointing. Overall, I feel like there's a lot of promise here, and maybe I ordered the wrong tacos or came on the wrong day. But this experience still left a lot to be desired. read more

I have always liked torchy's tacos, I ordered the baja shrimp, migas, and Mr. Orange since the republican has changed from sausage to brisket (used to be my favourite). Well-known as the taco fusion spot of Austin, this Torchy's location was a Starbucks Reserve-ish ambient upgrade to what I remember was as a fast food taco joint with amazing orange Torchy's sauce and hard plastic seats. This could be a lowkey Michelin pasta spot if it wanted to be. What keeps it from grandiose downtown vibes though--service was simplified with kiosk ordering and plate delivering. I don't get the hype around Torchy's Tacos. I usually find my way here every year while attending the SXSW film festival, mostly because it's conveniently located to several theaters and they often give out coupons to attendees. The menu is overly complicated, which leads to long lines to order. I've never had a taco I absolutely loved here, and I've gone every route from simple (Baja Shrimp) to complex (Mofaux), but the flavors are always boring and bland. I also feel that these tacos are grossly overpriced, and you really don't get what you pay for. My go-tos are usually the grilled salmon, fried avocado, or chicken fajita tacos. Something else to note: I've had the Mr. Orange grilled salmon taco twice, and each time the fish had a very unpleasant, overly fishy taste to it (which to me indicates an issue with freshness). The taco presentation is usually sloppy, too. I wouldn't mind the kitchen's carelessness so much if the food tasted better. Locals will always say that these are "huge" tacos and "one is enough" for a meal. That's a lie. You need at least two tacos for a normal sized adult meal, and maybe even 3 if you want to try different flavor combinations. Don't bother with the runny queso or any of the appetizers. Ditto with the fountain soda. I've been to this location multiple times and have NEVER had a fizzy soda. The fountain is always flat. You'd think I would've learned by now, but at least I am warning you. The dining area is large, but there never seem to be enough seats. I've had to stand up to eat before, and it's so unpleasant. The atmosphere is casual and the ambiance is upbeat. I've always found the employees to be friendly and helpful, eager to answer questions with their extensive menu knowledge. Torchy's is definitely one of those "you have to try it at least once" kind of places if you're in the south. I got the pork, beef, and shrimp tacos along with a side of cheese nachos. The tacos were good, but definitely on the more gentrified side of things. You're not coming here for authentic street-style tacos, but they do have some fun flavor combos and creative twists that make them interesting. The shrimp taco had a nice crunch, and the pork was probably my favorite of the three. Beef was solid, nothing crazy. The cheese nachos were super yummy and probably my favorite part of the meal. It's on the pricier side for what you get, and while it's a cool chain with a recognizable brand, I'd recommend checking out more authentic taco spots if you're really looking for the best Texas has to offer. Came for early dinner on a Sunday to avoid the crowds. Line was short. It was our first time there and they were helpful with recommendations. They were courteous and professional. Place was clean, neat and decorated nicely. Between the two of us we ordered four different tacos so we could each sample four. I'm partial to flour tortillas and their homemade version was amazing. They were tasty, and held up well to all of the ingredients and sauce, and were just the right thickness. All varieties were flavorful, well balanced and delicious. We gobbled everything up. The fried chicken in the Trailor Park was crunchy and moist; the taco itself has a slight kick to it. The brisket in the Crossroads was well seasoned and tender. It was good but we preferred the flavor of the brisket at other places that we have tried (Rollin Smoke or Coopers); granted we know this is a taco place so we aren't knocking off any points for that. Torchys was giving out little $5 coupons during SXSW, so I knew I had to stop by and give it a go. Plus, I had lived in Austin for over a year and hadn't yet had the chance to try one of their most iconic establishments-- criminal, really. As it turns out, what was truly criminal was the quality of this Torchy's Tacos. With full respect to my other Yelpers who apparently had a decent experience, I was blown away by just how bad this downtown location was. For starters, the staff I interacted with were incredibly apathetic towards service and total vibe killers. C- on that front. Also, the decor of the place was abdominal. The interior looked like that semi-trashy sports bar off the highway that your dad went to as a kid, which was definitely not what I was expecting from 1) a taco spot and 2) a venerated Austin institution. Regarding the food, also C-. I got three tacos, and honestly found all three to be really lackluster. The chicken was meh, and the toppings felt like a homemade taco bar where they just slap the meat on and then apply all the toppings on top. There hardly any cohesion with the taste in my opinion. Admittedly they were big tacos, but I think that's expected when you're selling each one for $5-$6. Overall was not impressed with this Torchys, but I definitely plan to stop by the one on South Congress at some point to see if that's any better. read more

I didn't know Torchy's was an Austin original since my first experience with them was at one of their locations in San Antonio. I will say though that Torchy's formula of breakfast tacos all the time but with a few other non taco dishes thrown in for good measure. The tacos though are just a tad on the more pricier side for tacos but for a downtown location you could definitely do a lot worse. I went with their taco of the month as well as the Democrat and Republican tacos. It was lunch time and I was especially hungry so I decided to try out their hillbilly queso dip as well. Given the location of this Torchy's, lunch time is going to be busy. While it could be hard to find a seat the service is quick and efficient; the only issue is the mob of folks who are waiting for to-go orders. If you've been to one Torchy's you been to them all but that's ok because the food is good. A little high in price? Yes, but still good, served quickly and it's always a good place to take people to for their first experience for Austin tacos, breakfast or otherwise. read more

Upon walking into this place, it looks like an upscale restaurant that sells tacos. On first glance, the tacos are not cheap, but one can expect this from a place that has tacos that are more in line with Tex-Mex. You order your food at the counter either with an employee or one of the tablets and then you seat yourself until your food comes to you. Additionally I ordered the Baja Shrimp taco, trailer park taco, and the brushfire They indicated that some of their tacos are very spicy but even their level three tastes sweet to me. I started off with the brushfire which had good taste and a pretty good sauce. Next, I tried the Baja shrimp taco which was well-balanced. From there, I tried the trailer park taco which reminded me of a taco bell "taco" but way too salty and I couldn't finish it. I last tried their taco of the month, which was their tailgater taco, which was one of the worst "tacos" I have ever tried in my life. There is a whole mound of strong, mediocre tasting blue cheese which overpowers the entire thing and frankly is not much better when you take it off.
