I want to Angie's with family and friends because we had a large group and they had TVs for the nba finals unlike other Mexican restaurants we looked at. And though they could accommodate a same day reservation for a group of 14, I think I know why. We were the only people there for most of the the two ish hours, which should have been a sign. Although the server was nice, she repeatedly got drink orders wrong (why not just write it down?). The chips and salsa were good, but the entrees themselves didn't feel very authentic. They used grated American cheese on the tacos, and the quesadillas were just American cheese between tortilla (despite the menu mentioning chicken, sour cream and guac). All in all it wasn't the worst food I've ever had, but certainly not worth a trip when you're visiting Austin. read more

This is a cute tourist "I came to an Austin Mexican restaurant" type place. Migas were soggy chips and eggs not 100% horrible but for someone who doesn't know any better they'd think this is great. Beans and papas weren't bad they had a home cooked feel. The carne guisada flavor was good for the 5 pieces of meat on the Ranchero Deluxe plate, table salsa was spicy which was great. The food was good and served fast during lunch. The parking spaces in front of the restaurant were the narrowest that I have ever seen. Say hello to dinged doors. The hot sauce was some of the hottest that I have experienced. That's a plus because it was so hot (and I love hot sauce) that I could barely eat it. That's another plus in that I saved many calories by eating only a couple of chips. The servers were friendly. My wife and I had the puffy tacos. They were just ok, but good. We happened upon Angie's downtown and thought we'd stop in for some brunch. We were able to seat ourselves and they brought us out chips and spicy salsa quickly. We each ordered a coffee, which was fresh, and we split the migas with a side order of barbacoa. The pros: everything was decent, but the highlight was the freshly made corn tortillas. The cons: Some of the food seemed a bit bland and the side of barbacoa was $5 and it was a very small portion. I guess I expected a bit more. This place is wayyyyy overpriced for the they are serving. 1 beef enchilada no rice or beans is $6.50. they also add 20% gratuity for a party of 5 or more. Two things that makes Angie's stand out from the rest: the salsa and those sweet, sweet corn tortillas. The salsa is hot enough to burn anything bad inside of you out. The corn tortillas can be used to mop up your tears of joy as you consume them. The Mexican plate is the best of all worlds. They use their corn tortillas for the taco, their enchiladas are really good (cheese), and then you get two more corn tortillas. Text book Tex Mex. Why not five stars? I can't believe this is my first time at Angie's on 7th! I'm glad I stopped by! It's a classic Mexican Restaurant which has been in the East Austin neighborhood for 20 years. The food is classic Mexican staples, they offer HH daily until 7pm, service is impeccable and has a parking lot in front of the restaurant! There is an altar of Virgin Mary statues by the entrance which lends to the ambiance of the restaurant. They are dog friendly in their patio which is a big plus! We will definitely add this to our go to spots here in East Austin when we're craving for Mexican food! read more

I went to this joint last night, and the best thing there was my date. I got there at 7:00 and was the only person there, which was really surprising. A coworker recommended this joint a few months ago, and my date recommended it as well. To me, it was just o.k. This seems like a family-run restaurant with many items home-made. The food doesn't have much presentation or bells and whistles but I really like it that way. Everything was hot and fresh. I ordered Steak A La Mexicana and it was much better than I had expected. It wasn't unbearably spicy and the steak wasn't overcooked or anything. The chips and salsa were really nice; I think it was best salsa I've had in a while, but the chips were too broken. The corn tortillas were home-made and is a bit thick just fyi. This has been in my Collection for quite some time. Service was friendly, but very slow....but they were giving it there all. Started with the basics with Chips, Salsa and Queso....which we didnt get until after our food arrived...when we reminded them. Its was good, and even better with the pure fire salsa...addictively spicy. Wife went with the Beef Enchiladas and double rice. Was good, but they only offer one kind of sauce for all the Enchilada dishes. I went with the Chicken Enchiladas, Beans and Rice. One major flaw was the fact that there was NO way it was Chicken....It was Turkey...I eat enough turkey thru out the year to know exactly what it tastes like. Just makes nervous exactly when the turkey was made. Its was dry but tasted OK. Along with it being piled on top as well make me question the whole dish. If you're hungry for old school TexMex, Angie's is the place. A casual restaurant with a open and airy dining room. The hot sauce and chips are complimentary, which is more and more rare these days. This is my second time that I've been there and each time, it's been good. I had one of the plates and it came to me quickly. Taco, Picado, Enchiladas and a big class od Dr. Pepper. We dropped by Angie's today and I realized this charming restaurant had become one of our favorites and yet we'd never reviewed it. Glancing through other reviews, we both found it surprising that anyone would claim the food is not authentic Mexican. Well it's actually not nor does it pretend to be. This place is authentic Tex Mex and even more accurately, East Austin Mex! That said, what could be more autentico than house made corn tortillas? Mmmm just the aroma calls up the ghosts of abuelas patting their morning fare into rounds. What's not to love? Phil adores the chorizo which is not at all greasy (like so many) and is packed with more flavor than any we've found in town. My fav is the barbacoa which is pure cheek meat with very little fat. I venture that it is also the best in town. The refried beans are textured and also full of flavor and the salsa always delicious, though it can be picante, so "watchale" (as they say on the East side). Another favorite go-to is the chicken soup, which is perfect for the cool days ahead. Oh and the margaritas are lovely and generous. Sometimes the staff is busy and we know to be patient, but we've never had an unpleasant encounter at Angie's. They work hard and give good service as a rule. This is one of those lingering gems of local culture that cannot be replicated. We treasure these little corners full of character that carry the history of the area and serve darn good food in the process. If a few persnickety wanna-be Austinites or impatient tourists are put off by a little clutter then I say great, they can stay away and that leaves more Angie's for us locals. The food was good but service was horrible we didn't get offered refills we didn't get checked on if we needed anything else and when we ask for refills the guy brought tea over and started to pour it and I told him we had pepsi and he took our cups and brought us Pepsi and when we asked for straws because he took ours with our first cup he brought us some small black straws and had us pick our own did communicate with us didn't apologize for bringing us tea in stead of Pepsi he made us feel like we were a bother to him but he did go to to other tables and gave the refills and more chip but never came to us kept passing us by we have never had this issue when we came here but not sure if we be back after this. read more

I'm not sure why Angie's doesn't get more press in Austin for having excellent Tex-Mex. After moving away from town, I hadn't been to Angie's in years, but I recently went for dinner with my daughter after a Longhorn game. The salsa is excellent, particularly if you like it hot, and our server convinced me to get a particular dish, and she was right - it was absolutely delicious! In addition, the corn tortillas were excellent and freshly made to order. I highly recommend giving this local business your time. read more

Im really surprised by the low marks as Angie's has been consistently one of the better Tex-Mex spots. We've been going here for quite sometime and have not had any issues with food or service. Great hidden gem without all the trendy fluff!! I highly recommend you stopping in..my husband and I wanted a snack so we shared the nachos. I had the house margarita and my husband had the Mexican Martini! So yummy!! Mexican martini comes with olives and a shaker - you get 4 delicious martinis from the shaker- definitely well worth it! Be sure to ask for Anna - she was the sweetest! She made a few recommendations as far as the menu was concerned (carnita puffy tacos) and suggested a few places for us to visit, while visiting ATX for the night. You won't be disappointed! read more
