The restaurant transports you to a different location with the open courtyard --it says the courtyard is climate controlled but we went on a gorgeous day for alfresco. Our server was attentive and walked us through the menu--we ended up ordering some popular dishes as multiple tables ordered similarly. We started with the tostado and crudo. Both were exceptional with a focus on depth of flavor as well as textures. For our mains we got the bone marrow tacos and the empanadas. Both were so good! The restaurant was delightful. It doesn't look like much on the outside but when enter you are greeted by a lovely hostess and then escorted to your table. I guess they have weekday happy hour ONLY in the bar. Like any other high end restaurant you are offered a choice of water, sparkling or flat. The cocktails were delicious. Our server explained how the chef prepares our food by what we ordered. Most of the items are prepared family style and meant for sharing. We ordered 5 items for the 4 of us. Ensalada, pescadado tacos, bone marrow tacos and the New York steak. Every time a dish came the server presented the dish with the name and brief explanation. For dessert we tried the dark chocolate tamal with a caramel type ice cream. The atmosphere was very relaxing and even though the restaurant was packed the design made it feel very comfortable. "Do We like what We see?" etc. etc. then he proceeded to order things we hadn't asked for, including an alcoholic drink for one of our party who clearly asked for it N/A! It's a pretty place inside. Nice ambiance. Friendly servers. Food was OK. I got the fish tacos with a soda. The tacos were good (not amazing or great) but I found it pretty overpriced. The meal was $65. I also had to pay $10 for parking so I don't think it's worth it to pay $75 for ok fish tacos. I would definitely not come again. The parking garage next to it requires pre-payment via an app but the QR code didn't work so I had to go all the way back down, go around the block, and park in the garage across the street. They had the tapas coming out one at a time, the salad came out third from last, the steak came out cold, the pork chop so late we forgot about it. The inside was quite literally half-cooked, unseasoned cubes of butternut squash...like if you just reheated a bag of pre-cut frozen cubes. Nothing else inside at all. I brought a couple of friends here for happy hour after a long work day and was truly disappointed. I was so excited to share this experience with them since I've been here before and loved it and this was their first time. The food was amazing! We ordered each item on the happy hour menu as we wanted to try it all. We also ordered a secret garden and margaritas. Unfortunately, the service was disappointing. Our server was Joshua G and he was nice at the beginning but the quality of service dwindled. When we paid our bill, we split the check evenly 3 ways. One of my friends had her receipt printed and when she was looking at it again, she noticed there were extra drink charges. Once we noticed, we tried to find Joshua but didn't see him for a while. We ended up asking another waiter if he could find our waiter as there was a problem with our check. When Joshua finally came back to our table, he said "oh there are extra charges on your check. I'll get my manager to fix that" before we explained the problem. We also did not tell the other waiter what the exact problem was. Once he got the manager to fix the check, the manager came to our table and said "I'm sorry this happened. We usually don't do split checks." However, the problem was not splitting the check but the charge of extra drinks that we did not order. Additionally, they didn't have problems splitting the check the last time I went. Blended in like a garage but once you find the entrance the inside looks quaint, classy and cozy. We sat at the communal table but it wasn't too busy so we still had our privacy. We got the avocado tostada as the app. It was light and crisp. Next came the masa dumplings. It came with a tomato based sauce with some cream sauce. The dumplings were very heavy. The fish tacos were perfect and probably our favourite. Fish was fried but not oily and it came with salsa Verde. It had a combo of umami, a lot of texture, a slight heat kick, and just lightly salted. The tamal was also pretty heavy and too buttery for our liking but the prawns were grilled nicely and the corn was pretty smoky. First of all - such a cool hidden spot. Walking downtown you'd walk right past it without knows it's there giving it a speakeasy vibe. The interior is very sleek and modern featuring dark browns and blacks. They have a bar, indoor seating. And a little patio with fans and heaters because of the unpredictable Texas weather! In terms of the food itself, we enjoyed all of the mocktails which were all delicious, the coconut horchata was my favorite. Came back for a full dinner with visiting friends and so happy to have explored the menu further! TLDR; Avocado Tostado and Crudo to start, followed by the Bone Marrow Tacos and a meat of your choice, and a Churro de Chocolate. Seated for dinner, rather than the Happy Hours booths, we got to experience the transitioning of the evening with the unexpected change in design as the dividing walls were raised to allow open space between the dining room and patio. So fun and such a cool industrial design! We started off with the Avocado Tostada - only one, but enough to taste for 4. Textures and flavors paired very well. A great crunch with added Salpicón (similar to a salsa). The L&L Brasicas (broccolini) also tasty and properly seared, could pair well with one of the meat dishes, any of the three suggested at the bottom of the menu. There Heritage Crudo was a perfect palette cleanser, small, but again a great little bite that could be split by 4. We, once again, made sure to have our visiting guests try the bone marrow tacos. I'll admit, just as tasty, but definitely a great value if you make it to happy hour. The Papas Fritas were underwhelming. Too charred, in fact couldn't help but only taste the oil. I recommend saving choices for something else. Potatoes are fillers any way! Out of the blue, right before closing out our tab, our guest asks if there are Churros -- and guess what? YES. They do have Churros. But not the traditional type, which surprisingly was okay in our books. I went here on a rainy day and almost couldn't find it. The sign to the building is not really that clear and on a dark day at night time you can miss it, so just pay attention. I think they have a pretty decent happy hour so if you wanna try it out but don't wanna spend the amount of money for like the regular dinner menu, Definitely go during happy hour. Overall, I definitely think that it's very expensive and the food is just OK. It wasn't fantastic but our server was really nice really polite and loved to give us you his thoughts on things on the menu. (Which I love). My husbands and I came on a Friday afternoon around 5:45pm with no reservation. We immediately sat at the bar and was overwhelmed by the happy hour choices. The bartenders were super knowledgable, shared stories about how the restaurant started, and where the food is from. Fun fact, Comedor doesn't have one main executive chef - they focus on meso-american oxacan style food and rotate chefs every month! Major destination haute cuisine. Costs a fortune and is worth absolutely positively every centavo. Fantastically original and marvelously executed dishes at every turn. A mescal collection to die for. Lots of architectural and design eye candy. Massively uncomfortable seats. Okay - you can't have everything in this world. Fortunately, the seats are designed so that The more mescal you drink, The softer and more comfortable the chairs become. I don't know how they do that but it kind of works. * * * The menu here is small ... So if you ate here enough - you really would get to try everything. Everything here is worth doing. The most boring format on a Yelp review is Dish 1. OMG! Dish 2. OMG! Dish 3 OMG! Repeat through Dish 36. I won't do that to you because you are nice people. However, I will make a few observations about some of the utterly amazing things you can eat and drink here. a) Many upscale Mexican restaurants in town have long long long long very first rate Mescal menus. Nearly all of them are good. Comedor has one of the best. A 2 oz drink will command an eye opening price. Just pay the price and close your eyes to enjoy the total mescal bliss that is coming your way. 2. They do a carrot tamal with a grated carrot salad on top and a carrot mole. Bugs Bunny never had it so good. Eat your carrots. Its's good for your eyesight. 3. Why in the world would anyone get $32 fish tacos when there are perfectly wonderful fish tacos all over town? (I particularly like the fish tacos at Tulum). Because Comedor's fish tacos are simply better - thank you very much. There is zero innovative in the preparation. They simply use a strong fishy fish and prepare it utterly and totally magnificently. This is Exhibit A for why Americans shouldn't be wimps about always eating bland fish. This strong fish has balls - and piercing dark eyes - and a rose between its teeth. You are about to be made love to by a fish taco. 4) The Hibiscus Raspa is a perfect happy little clown dessert. It is atypically huge for a restaurant that often has smallish servings. It is also an absolute proof of the argument once made by a Polish gourmet - "The problem with American desserts is that you can't get Americans to eat anything that is not chocolate". The Hibiscus Raspa will make you want to give up chocolate forever. Take shaved ice. Let it melt in your bowl. Top it with coconut espuma. Add a second whipped-cream-like complement. Add about four or five different kinds of fruit or fruit infusion. Think if you will about fruit salad - but imagine a fruit salad that is pure and total tropical paradise. This is everything the inventor of fruit salad wanted fruit salad to be. This is not the awful stuff that comes in a can from Del Monte. This is not the that's-nice-dear mediocrity that your friend brings to a potluck and you sample out of politeness. I spent longer on my Hibiscus Raspa than on anything else except for the mescal. I was in coconut espuma and harlequin colored happiness the entire time. Not even British Colombian marijuana has ever made me this happy. * * * They have other things on the menu - and I could go on and on and on about them. (One plus is they make a truly impressive and engaging strong espresso.) But I will let you do your own exploring on this menu. * * * Start saving your pennies now. Money doesn't buy happiness ... Overall had a great experience at Comedor! I love the discreet entrance that makes you feel like you're going to an exclusive place that only the coolest people know about. We arrived for our reservation early and we were accommodated right away. Immediately, you can feel a relaxed and romantic ambiance with dim lights and an indoor outdoor feel. The food was very tasty. What really sets the restaurant apart are the house/homemade masa tortillas with several of the main courses. So well made and delicious. We ordered fish tacos, avocado tostada, bone marrow tacos, and half chicken for 5 of us and this was able to fill us up. You have some time in between dishes, so you get fuller than you think. The portions are not large, but you're meant to enjoy it all little by little. The star of the show was definitely the bone marrow tacos. These were some of the biggest pieces of bone marrow I've ever had and was a hefty portion worth the price. The Kale salad bed was insane and makes you want to clear the entire plate. Honorable mentions are the micheladas! Super spicy and sour how I like them. The staff also greeted us with a birthday card for one of our celebrants. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I wish there was a little something extra for the birthday, and if you're hungry and have somewhere to be after, you might find yourself getting a little impatient. Such a beautiful space, but the best way to enjoy this place is the bar. The barkeeps here are the best I've seen in Austin, with not only intimate knowledge of the menu and and their cocktail craft, but also the heavily curated collection of 170+ bottles of mezcal behind them. Get there past 7:30 and the place will be too hoppin for them to pay you much attention, but get there earlier, say 6:30, and you'll get the best service Comedor has to offer from menu recommendations to mezcal pairings. The Central Texas Food Bank / Restaurant Week menu consisting of Masa tastings really exercised my taste buds from earthy lions mane mushrooms and "bathtub" cheese to the "smashburgerdilla" and shrimp empanada, followed by an amazing masa chocolate brownie Sunday. Off the normal menu, the fish tacos are some of the best on the planet. No matter what you order, the hero of just about every dish here is the in-house ground masa. There is literally no way I'll ever be able to eat a corn tortilla ever again without wishing it was as good as Comedor's. read more

Large parties must choose one of the three pre-fixe menu sets prior to dining. We selected Menu B ($85pp), which included a four course meal. However, even with a four course meal, I still found myself hungry. Food items were more tapas-portioned, and in my opinion, too modern and opulent for a Mexican restaurant (ie: Bone Marrow Tacos on a 2.5" corn tortilla, Mushroom Quesadillas). Comedor seems to rave about their mezcals, but even with a simple Comedor Margarita, I found the drink to be missing that distinct punch Mezcal gives. I've had canned fish that tasted better. Followed by the albondigas, which were so disappointing. I love albondigas and I've never tasted any that were anything like this, in the worst way possible. If you told me it was a meat substitute instead of actual meat, I would have believed you. All of the plates are small, especially considering the high cost. Not worth it at all. For dessert, we had the tamal de chocolate and masa blonde sundae. I know the names have masa in them, but damn. I wasn't prepared for what we got. They aren't playing around with the masa and the tasted lingered in my mouth for about an hour. I can't even understand why someone would choose to make either of these desserts. We were told the chef was a James Beard nominated pastry chef and I still just can't even. Im speechless. The service was great. The mocktails were great. One of the best restaurants in ATX!! Definitely a must try when visiting the city or to take your guests to! Try to make a reservation prior as it can get pretty busy. The restaurant door is very lowkey and kinda hidden. Once stepping in, you're immersed in a cute and chill indoor/outdoor space which is pretty common for ATX. We loved the vibe. The bone marrow tacos are definitely a highlight of the menu and a must get!! The 4 bone marrows were served on a bed of beautifully seasoned kale and greens to add onto the homemade tortillas along with the marrow. It was a pretty large serving and can definitely feed 3-4 people. There were only 2 of us and we had ordered a few more dishes and were stuffed to the brim.
