Com Tam Kim Vy was a spontaneous lunch stop after a quick visit to 85°C Bakery. The eye catching sign and the aroma of the grilled meat immediately drew us in. Before we knew it, we were seated inside the restaurant. The menu was straightforward with Com Tam being their specialty. We came with an open mind, ready to see if this spot lives up to its impression. The rice plate is usually piled on with a mixture of simple and customizable ingredients that invites you in. Unfortunately, the presentation here fell short. Each ingredients was spread out to fill the unnecessary large plate. The Bi (shredded pork), Cha (steamed egg) was especially skimpy, while the Suong Nuong (grilled pork chop) was thin and lacked charred flavor that makes a great Com Tam. A small soup on the side wasn't offered, that would've helped balance out the dryness of the rice plate. Service was another disappointment, the staff seemed disengaged offering little to no service. More Viet food options!! I initially came here looking for com tam, but after taking a look at the menu, we opted to order the Bo Ne and Bun Rieu. Now, the issue I have with most places that serve bun rieu, is that they tend to be bland and missing the iconic pungent flavor. However, the bun rieu here is some of the best I've ever had. There was plenty of crab, and it was packed with flavor. I thought to myself: This is what bun rieu should taste like. As for the Bo Ne, I personally felt like the swerving of beef was a bit small. I got more onions than beef and relied on the sides to fill me up. Luckily there was bread, salad and pate to accompany the beef. The item that stole the show for today's meal: Nem Noung Cuon (Pork Sausage spring rolls. It was a tasy and refreshing switch up from the classic Goi Cuon, which comes with shrimp and pork belly. If you typically order the classic spring rolls, I highly reccomend giving this one a try. One of the servers got our order wrong, so there was a bit of confusion, but they quickly rectified the mistake and took care of us throughout our meal. The service was horrible and the food was even worst. One order was prepared so poorly it could not be finished. It was supposed to have grilled chicken, but instead had some type of unrecognizable old overcooked meat. There was also a strange sauce on both dishes that didn't taste well. I specifically asked for no cilantro but my sandwich came with a ton of it on the sandwich anyway, but they were nice enough to remake one without it. The baguette was crispy, but alot more narrow than most baguette styles but I just thought the sandwich was "ok." Their rice plate was better. Greeted by a self serve ordering kiosk, no one at the counter. For some reason they stuck a $1 charge on the order that didn't make sense and no one around to explain it I assume it was the kiosk fee. Then it prompts for a tip at the end lol. Food was pretty bad. From the watery peanut sauce to the tiny sliced egg rolls I felt like they are doing a lot of short cuts here to save nickles and dimes. The meat in the Bun Thit Nuong cha gio, half of it went wasted because they gave me old overcooked meat probably intended for the garbage. It is a breath of fresh air to have a new Vietnamese restaurant that does not only sell pho!! Vietnamese food is my favorite cuisine and I am so glad that this place can showcase that. The restaurant does NOT sell pho, but it has SO MUCH more to offer! Also, the rice dishes uses BROKEN rice, which is more authentic to the rice dishes compared to just long grain/Jasmine rice. Let me tell you that it seriously hits differently when eaten with the fish sauce. It is just so much better! The staff are all really friendly. The set up is you sit down, order food, and then walk up to the register to pay. Banh bot chien - the dish was good, but the sauce was okay. It was more salty than sweet (which is what I am used to and prefer). Com chien dat biet - This was so good! Flavorful, savory, and fragrant. The portion was great and loaded with protein. This is enough to share between two people. Com tam ga xoi mo - This was AMAZING! Don't be fooled by the quantity of food, because it was pretty filling, especially when eaten with the rice. The dish came with fish sauce on the side and I could literally just eat rice with fish sauce and be happy. The chicken was extremely crispy, like Korean double fried chicken. The flavor was on point, too! I highly recommend this dish!! The only discrepancy that I saw from the menu, was that the menu had a picture of red rice. Com tam bi suon cha - It is so rare to see this type of rice plate! Usually it's just grilled pork and that's it. The shredded pork may be weird to you if you're not used to it since it's gummy/chewy in texture. My brother ordered this so I can't attest to the taste. Bun thit nuong - Huge portion! I tried the meat and it was good, but not as flavorful as it could be. Overall, I'm excited about this place and so glad it is near my house. They also took my order wrong and when I told them they said that's what they heard me order . Instead of saying sorry the waitress kept telling me that's what I ordered. No offense to the owners or staff. This is my honest review as a Vietnamese person. The restaurant specializes in Com tam (as it is in their restaurant name), and honestly... it is pretty lackluster compared to other places. My sister ordered Cơm Tấm Thịt Nướng Bì Chả (C8). Waiter brings the plate with just the Thit nuong (meat), missing all other components of the dish. Asked the waiter where everything else was and they corrected it. Truly, no problem at all. After bringing back the complete dish, the broken rice tasted dry (can definitely tell it was old) and the BBQ meat (thit nuong) was not good as well. It had a strange orange hue and no grill flavor either. The meat was probably cooked hours before, maybe a day before then reheated and served. My dad ordered from their special menu of the day, which was Pho Dac Biet. I did tell him that he is going to regret his decision because this place specializes in rice dishes... he was surely NOT impressed. They forgot to bring his side of rare meat and had to ask the waiter. Again, not a huge problem but worth mentioning. I suppose this is a PSA- do not order pho here and go to Pho Danh down the street if you really want to eat pho. I ordered the Bo Ne Dac Biet. It was okay. Nothing special. This has been opened for a awhile by my house and have not gotten a chance to try it and tonight my kids wanted Bo ne and I did want to drive back to Katy (works in Katy)because they wanted yummy Bo ne in Katy Asian town. So we gave this place a try. This used to be a seafood place. First thing I noticed when we walked in was it was hot, no ac! We sat at one of the bigger table since it was 7 of us. And they do close at 8 which was early I feel and we got there at 7:10. Since we've never been, we ordered our drink and wanted to take our time to look at the menu since this place was new. Waitress with the glasses asked if we were ready to order after like literally 5 minutes after we sat down. We asked for more time. She left then came back like a minute later. We still told her not ready. Like she was rushing us to order. I get it they close at 8 but we were there like an hour before they close. She came total of 3 times and I finally said to my family in Chinese let's just hurry up and order because she keeps rushing us. So we ordered, I got the C8 rice plate, my aunt got bun bo hue, my dad just got the specialty pho that was not on the menu but on the chalkboard under register, then 2 Bo ne with the Vietnamese sausage and a bun mi. By this time I was sweating as I'm fanning myself with one of their menu. I kept one for that reason. I did see one of the employees go to the ac control then I did start to feel just a slight ac but not enough. Now to the food, my rice plate was barely warm. I cook a lot at home myself. For some reason it seems or feels like the dishes were microwaved and plated on the plate after. It didn't like fresh. Called me weird but I was excited about the pickle veggie that comes with rice plate. Veggies were soggy and the pickled flavor was barely there, disappointing. Then the fish sauce that comes with the rice plate was just plain fish sauce maybe diluted with a bit water. For the the Asian that knows Asian dishes, knows the nuoc mam (fish sauce) is not just fish sauce and water. I only know that because you can only smell fish sauce and fish sauce by itself is very pungent. Now the bo ne, it was on the cast iron but was not sizzling but cast iron was hot tho. Not what my kids are used to from yummy bo ne. Now if you know this dish, you know to dip the bread into the juice of the beef and there were no juice on the cast iron. My kids doesn't eat it with the egg which was yolk was well done so it's not my they could have dip it in the yolk. VERY DISAPPOINTING. My son pretty much dipped his bread into the butter and part and ate the meat. The bun bo hue soup base was not as flavorful as it should and they didn't even give us the shrimp paste to put in and no shrimp paste was on the table. Remember as we are eating the restaurant is still hot . We are in Texas, it's like 106 degrees during the day, how do you run an establishment no ac. Back to the food. Bun mi was okay and the pho was okay. The ONLY thing I can't knock them for it the portion. The portions are pretty good size. But what's the point of being big dishes but not good. Maybe they are trying to focus on the Americans so they couldn't notice how it should taste. Idk. So by now I walked by to ask for a Togo box and saw the ac temp was at 83!!!!!!! All in all, probably would not recommend or come back which is very disappointing because there is a lot of Asian community here near cypress and it was nice to see an authentic Vietnamese restaurant so we don't have to drive to Katy Asian town or bellaire just for some food good especially now they closed down Viva by jones and 1960. read more

Recently just dined here and I have a few suggestions... The food itself is good however we ordered the spring rolls, bo ne, and com tam. The Bo ne was ok except they put the pate on to the hot skillet, we had to ask for the butter that is traditionally served on the side with the bread. If the pate came on the side along with the butter instead of cooking on the hot plate with the beef and eggs that's would've been nice. My com tam did not come with the traditional broken rice. They didn't have a knife for me to cut my meat as well. Spring rolls came out wrapped in unnecessary Saran wrap. If I'm eating it in the restaurant there's no need, the rice paper won't dry out that quickly implying that these should be made fresh. I honestly won't be surprised if this place goes out of business soon. The service is terrible but primarily because it seems as if it's run by a family that has their young daughter doing majority of the work. Also, not to mention there's pictures of food on the outside of the building that they do not serve.
