Came here about a month or so ago. Had an early doctor's appointment on a Friday and the day off. I got done early and knew no stores would be open had heard about this coffee shop and had been wanting to check it out. Maybe I should have went to the one not far away that sells poke. The service was good and I had a great latte, but it was probably not the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had mostly because it wasn't cooked or heated up enough. Or maybe it's just me. I'm guessing it was microwaved possibly. I must be used to having a breakfast sandwich heated up on a panini machine. The English muffin just seemed soft and not all that exciting and I think I probably thought it was going to be nicely toasty and melty. The cheese wasn't melted that much which makes me think either they were busy and didn't have time to check. I would definitely give them another try cause they appear to have a lot of variety pastries for breakfast, I probably just wouldn't get a breakfast sandwich next time. read more

I am so lucky to have this place across the street from my workplace. They are always quick, accommodating, and make a great latte, no matter which employee is working the bar. I'm impressed with their ability to remember my usual favorite drink, and they always have my favorite syrup available -- sugar-free irish creme. I enjoy their food too. It's not gourmet, but the paninis and breakfast sandwiches are still tasty even if they are simple. I have not yet tried their bubble tea. Try this place out, you won't regret it. Fantastic food and staff. I come here often as I am an employee at The Polyclinic and it's located within the same building. I usually get the Korean bbq rice bowl, but they have a variety of great options like Poke bowls, pastries and salads that are delicious. I highly recommend enjoying some breakfast or lunch here. I live across the street, so I used to visit this coffee shop more than once a week but I just got sick of dealing with them. The staff is NEVER the same, and they're frequently out of many products and don't seem to restock some for weeks. I've had a cappuccino in the store twice and both times the espresso was burnt. Just stay away. Sugar Bakery is only two blocks away and far, far better. read more

Really overpriced- a 12 oz latte and a biscuit from Macrina bakery that other places in town sell for $3 or $4 ends up coming to about $12 with tip. When I got a biscuit last time, it was very stale as well. The coffee is great, however, and this is the closest coffeeshop to me. I wish it was a more consistently good and reasonably-priced experience, because I would like to be able to make this my neighborhood coffee shop. read more

Disclaimer: I am not a coffee drinker. I will occasionally indulge in a mocha or latte, but I'm no conossiuer. This place is across the street from my apartment, so when I am in need of a fix I stop in. Also, whenever I have guests in town, this is the go-to coffee shop. From guests I have learned that the drip coffee is great. On my own, I learned that their mocha is a disaster that ends in a little pool of chocolate syrup. Customer service hasn't even been bad, but the place is very disorganized. I've seen multiple incidents with people waiting far too long for items, forgotten items, incorrect charges, and the food selection is very inconsistent. If you're in the neighborhood, stop by for a drip, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. read more

The place is warm and cozy, the aromas are great and inviting. However, the server with the grayish hair and purple streaks, uses the same glove over and over again (health and cross contamination) in preparing sandwiches and food. She also uses the ungloved hand to brush her hair back and adjust her glasses (hygiene and food safety) while she is preparing food. These are all health and food safety violations. If you ask for anything special in preparing your order, she is easily offended. read more

I ordered a chai latte & a 4 cheese grilled with a side salad. Everything was standard. It wasn't the best chai, but it was pretty good. The sandwich was nice, but nothing to sing about. The salad felt a bit off like it's from a salad bag, but overall I give the place a 4 b/c nothing wrong, customer service good, place is gorgeous. You know...prior to my most recent experience, I would have given Coffee Tree 4 stars because they make really good paninis (I always order the Veggie--it comes with avocado! Kafe Berlin charges you $1 to add it to their veggie sandwich). I haven't tried any of their drinks, since I'm not a coffee person, nor do I trust bubble tea from non-Asian establishments (yes, that might not be fair, but...meh), but their prices seem to be on-par with other cafes (and when I say "cafes," I'm really talking about Starbucks). However, I am docking them 1 star because I saw the girl making my sandwich EAT while making it. Yes, it may not be completely unsanitary as she didn't lick her fingers, stuff her face with sandwich fillings, etc., but STILL. You're not hiding behind a kitchen--rather, you're standing in front of me, so couldn't you at least just wait until my sandwich was done and in the panini press before snacking?? Gah. This was the first time she had made my sandwich, so fortunately, I haven't had this experience with any of their other employees, but it's enough to make me NOT want to return for awhile. Flew in from Dallas with the wife and needed a coffee fix fast. Very good coffee here. In an area dominated by starbucks it was refreshing to have an option of coffee or bubble tea. It's a fine coffee shop. I only rated it with 3 stars as I couldn't order a simple drip coffee...which in Seattle, I find extremely rare. The coffee is bold and pairs nicely with the small selection of typical coffee treats. They also make boba tea and do a hard push to sell you this drink. read more

This place makes delicious coffee but it's just a little expensive and also when they're using the panini press or making other hot food, the smell just takes over the entire front of the cafe and your jacket, clothes, mask, etc smell like burnt/Smokey food when you leave the cafe and it's so unpleasant. I've been budgeting like crazy since I started grad school 2 years ago, so I haven't been able to buy coffee as much as I used to. But I still love Coffee Tree! I met my old landlord there when I was first looking to move to First Hill so it's a major part of my neighborhood experience. They are a great neighborhood spot with good coffee and tasty treats. This is a cute place, but they never have enough staff on hand. This one poor guy is trying to handle five customers. I've waited about 8 minutes for a single espresso beverage. Just got a latte and was very pleased with it - plus they put just the right amount of caramel sauce in it! The coffee is Vivace and had a really bright flavor (not that I am a coffee expert or anything). Prices were comparable to Starbucks - I paid 3.50 for a 8oz latte with caramel drizzle. Staff was very friendly and patient as I decided what to get. :) It didn't seem too busy but the service was quick for me! I would go here again when I am on First Hill. read more

I am a regular customer at coffee tree since it is right near my work at the polyclinic. I continue to return to this shop because they are always so friendly and make a consistently delicious latte for me. Whenever I walk in, the barista has already begun making my usual drink. I love this place! It has been approximately 3 1/2 years since I have been here... As we used to live over on this side and now we do not. I was walking by today as I happened to be in the neighborhood and I walked in to get a coffee to see that things were still nice and quaint inside and they still make great coffee! On my way out the owner was walking in and she looked up and immediately stopped and recognize me and we started chatting for a few minutes! I have actually always had a fondness for this cafe, despite its less-than-stellar coffee quality. I live across the street and I use it as a peaceful place to work on weekends. It has generally been pleasant and kind of quirky. The two stars are for pleasant work sessions past. Today I went over to get in a good hour of work before they closed, and ten minutes after I ordered (watery shots and low quality sugary almonds milk) my eardrums--really my very bones--were being rattled to the point of exploding by the loudest power tool, right behind the counter. Someone came over to warn me it was going to happen "for a minute." Another ten minutes, one migraine, zero work done, and about 40 decibels decrease in my hearing later, it was still going on. Really, it was loud. Nuclear bomb loud. But more grindy and with staying power. So, here's what I would like the owners to understand: people do not come here for the coffee. Especially on weekends, when most customers live near by. Believe me, we make better coffee at home. We come for a pleasant atmosphere. This is your commodity. If you're going to do construction, you should do it after business hours. You close at three. You only had to wait one hour. I'm sure you want to go home early, but you are ruining your product. I will probably not be going back for a good long while. The walk to the Viscount is good for me anyway. read more

I love this coffee shop. I've lived in Seattle for 5 years and this little spot is my favorite. The atmosphere is relaxed and makes for a great place to get some work done. The staff is always friendly and the owners always remember me and treat me very well when I come in. They serve Victrola coffee, which I love, and make really good sandwiches! Try the veggie breakfast with an egg. I am moving out of town but will definitely be back next time I am in Seattle. read more

I have given Coffee Tree many chances since they opened back in 2012 and have waited to write a review because I wanted to love them. I wanted them to prove my dissatisfaction wrong. I have tried everything from plain lattes, flavored lattes, milkshakes, iced coffee, and even their specialty drinks. My conclusion is that they are more concerned at appearing posh than being a good First Hill coffee shop. We live in a city full of unemployed baristas who have a passion for making coffee, yet they hire people who appear to be doing this just because it's a job. I should back up, the baristas they had when they first opened knew how to make coffee, but over time the quality declined. The last three times I have been there I had to toss my lattes before they were even halfway down. There is a science to pulling shots, and Coffee Tree's baristas just haven't figured it out. They also don't have that "friendly barista attitude" you would expect when going into a local coffee shop. You will get more friendly small talk at a coffee stand in an airport terminal. They are also as slow as molasses. I have made the mistake thinking I can grab a cup of coffee before I have to be some where and am always late. I would plan 10-15 minutes to place your order and get your drink, even when there is only one person ahead of you. Another thing that upsets me is that despite being in an extremely dog friendly neighborhood, they have an actual sign on their door asking you not to bring your dog in, but that they do have treats inside. I don't think places should just allow their establishment to be crawling with dogs, but I do like to grab a cup of coffee on my morning walk with my dog. Luckily Cafe Berlin happily welcomes dogs and makes very delicious coffee. If good coffee isn't your thing and you're just looking for a place to chat with a friend or do some work, this place does have a trendy atmosphere. Yummy veggie panini's, a really good triple vanilla latte (except I can never tell what design he is trying to do with the foam so I just make stuff up in my head- It's a unicorn!). I try to be as conservative with my 5-star reviews as possible but frankly, this place has been unfairly rated in the past year. I've only lived in these parts for a year so I won't ask you to apply my praise to anything pre-2014 because I wasn't around for that, but I HAVE been coming to Coffee Tree almost daily for a year and can say with confidence that the big ol' 1-star reviews are pretty unnecessary if you look at what they complained about. Coffee Tree is a total godsend to anyone living in this part of First Hill which is essentially in a huge black hole with little more than parking garages, high rises, a pizza place, a sushi place, and this here coffee joint. I worried when we moved here that we might have accidentally ended up in the land that time forgot and when I find myself craving the omnipresent tacos of my former home in Texas, I still sometimes think so. Fortunately for me, Coffee Tree exists and not only exists but also serves amazing Victrola coffee and some tasty pastries just a block away from me. We started coming here out of sheer convenience and have continued to come here because the coffee is consistently great, the baristas are all friendly and engaging, the prices are right on the money for Seattle, and the food/snacks are all really good too. I'm not an ambiance guy so I can't give a lot of flowery and/or scathing feedback about the decor because in my opinion, it's not important. I come here for great coffee, fair prices, friendly people, and I've yet to walk away without experiencing all three. I'll briefly touch on the 1-star review that mentions dogs and will agree ONLY to the point that I think that dogs don't belong in places that prepare and/or serve food (unless it's a service animal...er...an actual service animal, not an accessory, ya dig?). That much being said, I can probably count on one hand how many times I've seen someone bring a dog in and I've never once seen dogs anywhere near the food prep area. I, too, wish dogs were nowhere near my food but really that's an observation and complaint about patrons, not the owner or their staff. For the 1-star writeup that laments the broken espresso machine and the SUPER LONG TIME it took to make an obscure pour-over coffee drink that is clearly not the type of drink they make the most often, I can only offer her reassurance that she will survive that adversity and might remind her that if that particular situation was so hard that it seemed appropriate to ding a business with a harsh review because of a mild inconvenience, that her perspective may need some reevaluation. I DIGRESS...let's finish up by talking about how friendly and knowledgeable the baristas and owner are. I've learned all their names and they've learned mine. We've chatted about the coffee, we've commiserated about the weather. They take extra care to make sure you enjoy your drink and unlike almost every shop I've ever been to, they've never once burnt an espresso shot. It's great stuff, and if you're on the fence about giving it a try, trust me, you'll dig it. read more
