CoCo's is so so so good! I've only had takeout and it stays good still on the drive to my home. I love all types of Taiwanese and Chinese beef noodle soups but CoCo's is my favorite in all of Austin! A bunch of Taiwanese restaurants are crowded around here so it's hard to choose which one to go to. This place is small but the food and boba tea are pretty good. I got the coconut milk tea and the pork over rice. The coconut milk tea was nicely sweetened and had a pronounced coconut flavor. I got it with boba and almond pudding. The boba was chewy and sweet and the almond pudding added a nice nuttiness that mellowed out all of the sweetness. The pork over rice was also very good. The pork was fatty, so when you mix it with the rice, the fat and juices from the pork coat the rice and create a sauce. It was very flavorful and got even better when you mixed it with the braised egg and pickled vegetables. All of the food came out fairly quickly and the service was good. I recommend coming here if you want someplace quick to eat and you want boba tea. read more

I've been on a taco+Chick-fil-A diet since I've returned to Texas. However, it was time I needed more sustenance! If you are trying to drive to Coco's, DON'T. I would recommend having it delivered instead. The drive to Coco's is not ideal. They DO NOT have a private lot. One of their popular menu items is the Peppercorn Chicken, but honestly, the Pepper Steak is where y'all are sleeping! It is soooo much better than the Peppercorn Chicken. The Peppercorn Chicken is fried, while the Pepper Steak is cooked. I love the seasoning of the sauce of The Pepper Steak-- it's not thick, but more liquid instead. If you have been living in Austin, you know CoCo's Cafe has been on guad forever. It is definitely the comfort taiwanese food avail near campus, but it does come with higher cost. My favorite dish to get here is the peppercorn chicken rice dish. The peppers that go along with the chicken give a great kick, as it definitely complements the rice in my opinion. My concern about this place is the quality control. There are many times where I have been served soggy peppercorn chicken. Trust me, the dish is still good, but if I'm paying $9 before taxes for a meal when there are cheaper options like Tapioca House next door, then I'd expect fresh chicken. There are also other dishes to try here, like the spicy beef noodle soup and the green onion pie. The green onion pie is a more appetizer like dish and is definitely shareable with friends. The spicy beef noodle soup is great entree to get as well with a generous amount of beef in the soup. Stopped in for lunch on a Sat. The restaurant is very small. A handful of tables and high top seating. I tried the rice ball with bamboo and pork. Reminds me of street food in Taiwan. There is a gelatinous texture to the rice ball, my non Chinese friend did not like this :) I thought it was great. The sauce is quite sweet. The fried tofu was great. Crispy on outside n soft in the inside. It came with a peanut sauce. A bit on the sweet side again. Also ordered the green onion pancakes. Def get a half order. The full order is too much. The pancakes are very crispy. Has a soy based sauce. It's tasty. Lastly we tried the rice that is served in a tea leaf. The serving size for this is ginormous. Double the size of the ones my mom has made in the past. This is also quite good. All the serving sizes are generous. There's not really service here. I hadn't had good boba for several months and was looking forward to finally getting legit boba once I reached Austin. Seriously the visit was such a disappointment, it was like I didn't even get boba in the first place. This Coco's is located pretty much across the street from University of Texas. Parking is pretty much nonexistent if you come during rush hour, but luckily we snagged a spot right outside the storefront. I've been to several Coco's in LA, and all of them have been super bright and welcoming, but this one was really dark and crowded. There's quite a few tables, but pretty much all of them were occupied. Menu wasn't too complicated, but I just stuck with a simple milk tea with pearls. Price was less than $4, and the drink came out pretty quickly - but sadly, it was disappointing. Pearls were pretty soft and not chewy enough. The tea was bland, with a sweet tinge to it. I felt like I wasn't even drink milk tea, just watered down black tea with soft boba. I actually had to force myself to finish the boba ... it was that unappetizing. Lesson learned. The best boba is really in the San Gabriel Valley. Even the milk tea and boba that I made myself tasted better than this. read more

I am currently sitting on the toilet as I am writing this. I've been here for the past 30 minutes and my boyfriend is waiting for me outside so that I can squeeze into a date night dress and go out to eat with him. But I don't think that will be happening tonight. I first felt it 4 hours after I ate here. I had just finished voting (do it) and came home to collapse in bed as I felt very tired. Then all of a sudden, it was like all of the air had been sucked out of my lungs. My stomach clenched into itself. An unruly, inhuman growl came from my stomach and in my mind I thought: "oh...no....." Clenching my butthole the best I could, I yelled to the boyfriend "I GOTTA GO" as I bolted into the bathroom and stripped my pants off. I wish I could say it came easily after that--but it was just, how should I say it delicately, clogged. My stomach did not care and continued to beat itself into a pulp and my whole body convulsed as cramps racked through my whole abdomen. I've never given birth but I'd imagine this is how hard I'd push if I did. Finally--FINALLY it came out. And by it, I mean the most satanic, awful, horrible substance ever. It didn't even retain its solid form, from an outsiders perspective it probably sounded like a very forceful stream of pee. If only it were. As the only thing I've eaten today is coco's curry fried chicken with rice, and nothing I ate yesterday was out of the ordinary, I do unfortunately have to chalk up this bathroom experience to the meal. I was so set on complimenting coco's for increasing their portion sizes as I remember the many times I've come before the prices have been steadily increasing while portions have been decreasing, but it looks like they've been listening to the reviews. I've been to Coco's many, many times. My go-to choice on the menu here is peppercorn chicken (no. 5). It's absolutely delicious and almost always made perfectly crunchy and tasty. Their milk tea with boba, in my opinion, is a bit watered down and less flavorful than it should be. However, their fruitier flavors are so worth it! For gluten free options, I've heard that the peppercorn tofu is gluten free (minus the rice) and ALL tapioca pearl should be gluten free as well. :) read more

The Peppercorn Chicken plate is always a good idea! The dish has an ample amount of chicken and rice. There is also complimentary soup. My go to drinks here are the Green Milk Tea, Taro Coconut Milk Tea, and Coffee Milk Tea. Their boba isn't my fave in Austin but it's still good with a variety of options. Coco's is a great hangout spot and there is limited seating but I am usually able to find a spot during weekday lunches or dinners. read more

This place is delicious but what is up with the cloying smell of air fresheners every where? It's like grandma's house here. There are multiple ones on the long dining table and on the shelves and it makes it difficult to smell the food. Are they hiding something in the basement?! Right on west campus so you have to either walk there or die trying to park! We chose to walk from campus. It was insanely expensive like every other West campus restaurant and it was veryyyy busy. Basically nothing on the menu was less than $5 even the sides. Boba here is hella expensive maybe because i'm used to houston prices but $7+ for a large is ridiculous. Regardless their boba and soup was good as hell, but it was almost $20 soooo i would say it isn't worth it. The fried chicken was more like a chicken strip cut into pieces but it was super good too. This is normally one of my fave places to go when im craving asian food. My favorite dish is the peppercorn chicken and my fiance usually gets the chicken or beef lo mein. To prelude the main reasons I like this place 1. good quality non greasy food 2. prices are pretty cheap for the amount of food you get 3. clean (not that it matters bc I like dumpy dive looking places too - as long as no bugs running around) So this time around I had to do it non meat style because it was a Friday during lent. Tofu peppercorn - I've gotten this before and it was pretty good. Equally as good as the chicken. Perfectly crisp and not greasy. This time around everything was sitting in grease on the bottom (even my rice). The further into eating it, the breading around the tofu became gummy and soggy. I couldn't even finish it and I threw away the rest (and I don't throw away food unless its gone bad). Vegetable Lo Mein - we get the meat version almost every time and we love it because there's always a lot of veggies that aren't over cooked and it is the least greasiest lo mein I have ever found. This time around I can't say so much. There were less veggies and it was pretty greasy you could even see a shine to it (not drenched in grease of course - just similar to most asian restaurants) So the 5 stars is normally what I think of this place. It could've been a bad day or a new cook. I would definitely give it one more shot because this is one bad instance out of the more than 10 times that I've eaten here. read more

A very student friendly Chinese cafe. Seems to be bustling with lots of young millennials, but not so much that the place seems stuffy or crowded. Then again, we came at 3 for a late lunch. I'm sure it's different when it's lunch hour!! Wanna a free soup? You get one with any purchase. In fact, it was really delicious, and didn't seem to be something that was free and so good at the same time. They have a very nice menu, not overly extensive. But it's more than enough for a quick lunch or dinner. There are picture menu on the wall, so even you don't know much about Asian dishes, you don't feel like a total stranger. We ordered the beef soup noodles and peppercorn chicken and rice. The soup noodles looked very appetizing in a bowl. The beef placed on top was chunky, garnished with chopped green onions. The soup was very flavorful and delicious. The noodles were flat noodles and a bit chewy and moist. I'm almost tempted to say they were made from scratch in-house. But it's not likely for a small café of this size to do so. As to the beef, it was chunky and tasty. The portion was generous. But it would be better to have cooked a bit longer. It was kind of tough for me. I had beef in other places much tenderer than this. But I did get a good workout for my jaw and teeth. Don't get me wrong. Since it's so delicious, it's worth a try. As to the peppercorn chicken, it was nicely fried, crispy outside and tender inside. The fried sliced green pepper and chopped green unions were just as tasty as the chicken. It added a lot of flavor to the chicken. Again the portion was good, but I would like to have more steamed rice. One small scoop was not enough. Everything was good, and we cleaned up the whole plate at the end! We also tried a bubble Thai tea. Not spectacular, but decent enough. Coco's Cafe was amazing!! i had never tried Taiwanese food before but this was a great intro. i got the crispy chicken nuggets, and they were super crispy/crunchy on the outside but still juicy and soft inside. the sauce they gave with it added a really good mix of a sweet and somewhat tangy flavor to go with the chicken! all this for only 7 and a half dollars!! the thai tea was also sweet and good overall. the service was super quick and the workers were friendly! the servings were very generous for the price, and my friends seemed enjoy their orders as well! read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Austin! This is a must visit and classic Longhorn hangout. I've been going to this place since 2001 and 90% of the time I get the same dish...fried chicken #3 it's been voted best chicken dish of Austin for quite a few years by the Austin Chronicle. The fried chicken breading is like no other you have tried before. The pickled cabbage and the white rice are a perfect balance creating a culinary ying yang. And to top this you can add fresh jalapeños marinated in soy souce...oh yeah, I like'em spicy! You can't eat here and not get a pearl drink (tapioca)...I like the fruit drinks. The aesthetic's in here is pretty typical of a bubble tea/small restaurant it is very small however it does have a good amount of seating at the same time. We did not try the food however we did all order bubble tea drinks we ordered the pineapple/watermelon/taro smoothie/milk tea and strawberry smoothie. The taro and pineapple, and milk tea were good however the strawberry and watermelon weren't the best the strawberry one is way too sweet and the watermelon just tasted like water down watermelon juice. I have to say, I feel pretty ripped off after getting dinner there this evening. Honestly, I probably wouldn't be ordering from Coco's ever, due to its incredibly difficult location and high food prices (they may look comparable to some other Asian restaurants, but considering what you actually get for your money, it is very expensive and overpriced) my girlfriend went to UT though and so every now and then she gets a craving for Coco's. So, this isn't the first time we've been there, but aside from the scallion pancakes, this place is incredibly unremarkable. Tonight was really the straw that broke the camel's back though, and in the future, I will probably talk my girlfriend out of eating here again. Tonight we ordered two of the pepper chicken dishes (this is what my gf gets a craving for) a 1/2 order of the scallion pancakes, an order of egg rolls, and 1 order of steamed vegetables. Pepper chicken - again we have had this dish before, it is essentially the reason my gf ever makes us go here, and in the past it has been tasty, but not today. Today the chunks of chicken were big, not even remotely crispy, very oily, and had the texture of big hunks of fat. It was bad, not good at all. The sides are always white rice and what I think is a form of kimchi they just refer to as "pickled vegetables" Egg rolls - these were an absolute joke. They should be ashamed of these things. I have eaten egg rolls at lots of places both in and out of austin. I have never ever ever seen an egg roll so tiny except maybe in a frozen box of hors d'oeuvres. I mean they were itty bitty and more expensive than pretty much any place I have ever got egg rolls before. It's $3 for 3 of them, but again, it's practically comedic how damn tiny these things were. Maybe they were 2" big. Don't get ripped off buying these. Just skip them completely Steamed vegetables - this was $5 and again a total joke. It basically looked like chopped up bock choy. That's it. No "mixture" of vegetables. No broccoli, carrots, water chestnuts, snow peas, baby corn, you know pretty much anything you would be used to getting as steamed vegetables. It was just chopped up bok choy, steamed. Gross, over priced, and total rip off. Scallion pancakes - I think they call this "green onion pie" got the half order. This wasn't bad, and it's a pretty decent sized portion, and also one of the only restaurants in town that I know of that makes this. The kicker is though, that they charge $0.75 for an extra "pancake sauce" which I paid for and then they didn't even give me. These are good, but again, I really only got them because this is where my girl wanted to eat tonight. Certainly not worth any sort of special trip. I am now writing that at 4:30 AM, because I woke up with a stomach ache about 45 minutes ago. My guess is, this place is able to survive because it is across from campus and so must get a pretty good amount of walk up traffic, and they serve Boba, so maybe that is what they sell the majority of. All I know is, I already wasn't particularly fond of the place, and after wasting $45 tonight for food that was a total rip off, I won't be spending my money there again. To start off, milk tea is veerrry sweet and the tea flavor is barely there. The mango green tea tastes slightly watered down, and I wish I could've gotten that extra sweet. Taro smoothie was delicious! Perfect in sweetness and balance of flavors. I'd probably prefer to go elsewhere if I had a choice. I'll have to come back to try the boba, but the fried tofu curry was pretty bad. The curry itself was ok but it was too bland. The fried tofu had too much cornstarch so that when you bit into it, there was gooey un-fried slime. The tofu was also not crispy at all. And when you poked it, your finger came away all greasy. The bottom of the plate had a substantial layer of oil under the tofu. The pickled veggies were good! read more
