Went here over the weekend since it's been a while since I went back. Still wish they made improvements to the parking lot, but I know it's not on them. I came here also because I had a deal from the AACHI fundraiser they are doing this month. Ordered the Spicy Salmon toast and the Egg, Bacon, and Sausage toast. Both were amazing and had tons of flavor. The bread is soft and fluffy. I also got a plate with Chicken Kara-age. Not too bad, I personally would stick to the Katsu. The Chicken Kara-age was not as crispy as I would like it. Also got royal milk tea, which was lightly sweetened. This place does get packed, so if you like to try this place, avoid the right before noon crowd or go early morning or later in the afternoon. The restaurant itself is small, but they do have some outdoor tables as well. The hard part about sitting outside is if you order drinks, I don't know if you can hear your name being yelled out while you are outside, so I would suggest having someone inside to grab your drink if you order any or check inside after a while to see if your drinks are ready. read more

Initially, I was supposed to meet a friend at Sa-Tén-Canapy. GPS Alert: My GPS kept taking me to the Springdale Food Park, which appears to be a bike tour location. Please note that Sa-Tén is in an industrial-style complex and can be easily missed. The anchor point is a large green Canopy sign. After circling a few times, my friend and I started to meet at Stargazer instead for coffee. After having coffee at Stargazer, we decided to grab breakfast "to-go" at Sa-Tén as my Art contest start time was nearing. It is literally diagonally across the street from Stargazer. Sa-Tén means "coffee lounge" or "café" in Japanese. It traditionally refers to a relaxed neighborhood coffee shop...a place meant to be a welcoming community space. The coffee shop is small with wraparound glass windows emitting an abundance of light. Sa-Tén's interior is unassuming...really non-distinct. My friend ordered the last salmon toast, however, since she had previously tried it, she allowed me to have the last one. Such a thoughtful and kind friend...she ordered the bacon, egg and cheese toast instead. Let me just say this salmon toast was the bomb diggity. Our server described this breakfast item as salmon on white toast...what a major understatement! Our toast was even larger than Texas toast with a brioche taste and perfectly toasted. Quite honestly, I could have just eaten the toast all by itself. The salmon and cheese enhanced the taste. What a spectacular discovery! My friend was pleased with her selection as well. You know when you only have one niece and you tell them they're your FAVORITE niece...By default this is true no matter how much it really is true. When at Canopy, Sa-Tén is the only food, drink and coffee option so it's my FAVORITE! It's a very cute shop and shares the parking lot with Canopy so there's plenty of spots. Staff was very friendly here and there is a lot of indoor & outdoor seating. During Open Canopy the line gets long and the seats get full, but the turnover is fairly fast. It's a cute space with kissaten (Japanese coffee shop) vintage, minimalistic vibes, but also some flare with kitschy trinkets abound fitting their squirrel theme. I only did caffenation hydration here and was pleased with my black cold brew. Great taste and didn't break the bank. Word on my street is the toasts are fabulous - next time! Sa-Tén is easily one of my favorite coffee shops in Austin. I've probably been 15 times if you include their old location on Airport, and it never disappoints. If they have the seasonal black sesame latte, get it. It's incredible. Nutty, almost like peanut butter, and not overly sweet. Their matcha is also some of my favorite in the city. It's smooth, balanced, and doesn't even need sweetener. The food is just as good as the drinks. The toasted milk bread is a must. It's simple but perfect. I've also had most of the lunch items, including the curry, potato salad, and chicken katsu, and all of it has been excellent. You really can't go wrong. It's the kind of place where you can grab a coffee and end up staying for a full meal without regret. The vibe also keeps me coming back. It has this effortlessly cool, Japanese-inspired aesthetic without feeling try-hard. The music is always great, like "hold on, I need to Shazam this." There's a loose squirrel theme, which I don't fully understand it, but it somehow works and just adds to the charm of the place. It's located in a complex with art galleries, so the whole area feels creative and interesting. Great coffee and food and cool atmosphere. I originally wanted to try their brunch items, but they were sold out and brunch was just ending, so we went with the build-a-plate option instead. Build-a-plate meals are fun. At Sa-Ten, I chose chicken katsu, anchovy garlic toast plus sides of Japanese curry and kale salad. It arrived quickly and was presented beautifully. Salad was fresh and lovely. The toast was almost too hot to eat, which to me is perfect! I do wish they wouldn't serve their katsu almost always on the edge of burnt. An overcooked and dry katsu just doesn't taste great, no matter how much sauce is on it. I'll branch out and try other items like the grilled tare chicken next time. I've enjoyed every coffee drink I've ever had here. These days, it's mostly Americanos. Sa-Ten's Canopy location is a bit out of the way for me (their old location on Airport was closer to home) but much nicer. The Canopy complex consists of art studios, art galleries and several offices. There's outdoor seating and plenty of parking. read more

I came here once in 2018 and had a grand 'ol time, so when my friend asked if we could get brunch here in 2026, I was happy to learn that Sa'Ten is still open and thriving. The restaurant was only half full when I arrived at 11:00 am on a Sunday morning. I ordered a chicken karage with a drizzle of siracha mayo, white rice and sides of curry and potato salad at the counter and was given a number to bring to my indoor table. My food came out pretty quickly and it was piping hot. My chicken was cooked perfectly and the siracha mayo was not too spicy for me. I thought the rice shaped into a cube was so cute, and it was the perfect shape to spoon curry on top of. The interior is decorated so well, with lush green plants and warm brown wood walls. There's plenty of spots in the parking lot and they have some outdoor tables too. I saw a cute dog on the patio. I am excited to come back! read more

It just unfortunately wasn't very satisfying because of the small portion size for $18. The staff were nice, and I came in with quite the large, noisy group on a weekend. I had the build a plate with chicken katsu, white rice, macaroni Fuji salad, and Japanese-style curry. Honestly, this would have been vastly improved if they could have just given more white rice, which is dirt cheap and should be easy to do. There was a small amount of rice that was not enough. I thought the curry would come with some extra rice, but it didn't, so it was extra difficult to portion out the rice with the curry and meat. The chicken katsu and macaroni salad were both very good, and I enjoyed them. The curry had a strange sweet taste that I can only describe as similar to Play-Doh. Not the texture, but just how I imagine Play-Doh would taste like. I also got the matcha latte, which was alright. It definitely had a very earthy matcha flavour. It doesn't come with sweetener, so I asked for some to be added. I would say on my matcha tier list, it was average. read more

One of my favorite spots to get matcha! Located on the east side, Sa-Ten is an Asian inspired cafe with coffees, teas and toasts. Plenty of parking available and they have seats indoor and outdoor. I've been to their old Airport location and loved it back then, so I was very excited to try this newer location. I will say, the parking lot and plaza seem a little sketchy at night. But I feel like this kind of food is better in the day time anyways, especially since Sa-ten also doubles as kind of a coffee shop. The chicken kara-age is so good! The meat is crispy and juicy and I love how saucy it was too. The spicy samurai sauce is creamy but gives it a little kick too. The anchovy garlic toast just tasted like cheesy garlic toast, which obviously is delicious, but I was kind of hoping for more of an anchovy taste to it. The kale salad is really nice, especially because I feel like everything else is so heavy that's it's nice to have some leafy vegetables. Its really lemony and light. The macaroni Fuji salad took me a few mouthfuls to get used to. I was expecting more of a traditional Japanese mac salad that's got a bit of a vinegary taste to cut through the heaviness of everything. But it was more like macaroni and mayo. It was still good, but yeah not what I expected. One of my friends got the Katsu don. And while each aspect of the bowl was good, it was really dry because there wasn't any type of sauce. Oh wow. This spot is such a treat. I came for the sesame latte and milk toast options but stayed for the floor to ceiling windows and The Canopy. If you're from the Houston area, The Canopy gives off Sawyer Yards vibes, but the addition of a spot like-Sa-Tén is more than welcomed. The smoked salmon milk toast (offered all day) is definitely a delectable snack. Incorporating many of the main components of the sushi roll, it offers great bursts of flavor (without tasting fishy).
