I grabbed an after dinner boba tea at Coco Café two weeks ago. Coco Café is part of a small block of Asian eateries - Taiwanese, Vietnamese, and Chinese. It's like a Pan-Asian hotbed close to the Drag and UT. The price is right for college students, which I'm sure many are grateful. When I stopped by, most people - if not all - in the Café were college-aged. There were a bunch of tables where students could relax, chill, and go online (Coco has free WiFi). I bought an Almond Milk Tea with Tapioca (they call it pearls here) for me and a Taro Milk tea for my dude back at the hotel. They make the drinks fresh and have the cup sealer machine here. The drinks were very good and they hit the spot. Plus, the girl behind the counter who took my order and rang me was friendly and polite. Coco Café is a nice spot by UT and I'd recommend it if you need a boba fix. read more

As my family and I slowly begin to venture outside post pandemic, we found Coco Cafe, and this place is fantastic. I spent many summers with family in Taipei, and this place brought back so many memories of those visits. The flavor of the spicy beef noodle soup was on point with the most tender piece of beef ever. The crispy pork chop reminded me of a great little bento box place I would go to. The best item was the green onion pie (aka Chinese pizza at my house)! This reminded me of how my father would make these from scratch on special occasions. What a awesome little spot on the drag! Coco's was actually one of the first places that I ever ate in Austin when I came here 4 years ago to tour UT. My first impression was that it was really good! The milk tea tasted great and the peppercorn chicken meal was great as well. Fast forward 4 years and now the prices have sky-rocketed in comparison to then and the portions have gotten way smaller. I still think it's unbelievable how the crispy chicken nuggets (snack size) are almost $7. That's two in-n-out meals pretty much. The chicken nuggets actually taste good though! It comes with sweet and sour sauce (I think that's what it is?) on the side and they taste nice together. I just really don't think it's worth what you pay for it. The only other things I ever get when I come are the peppercorn chicken and the papaya smoothie. The peppercorn chicken tastes good but they're such small pieces and for the price, the portion is just too small. The papaya smoothie on the other hand tastes pretty fresh and pretty authentic! I like it and that's why I come back occasionally. I think they have some of the best smoothies around! But if I'm wanting thai tea, I always go to the place next door (Tap House). It's cheaper and tastes better! It's also fairly small and cramped there. There's not that much space so sometimes it might be hard to find seating. Overall, I would still come back here if I'm feeling rich that day and willing to spend some $$. Otherwise, I would choose somewhere cheaper that gives more food. Coco's gets my business quite a bit - mainly because my bus transfer happens a block away from its doors, and after a long day at work (with a long commute home ahead of me), I feel like I deserve to treat myself to a delicious bubble tea and some yummy Taiwanese food. As usual, I am basing this review primarily on my usual order of bubble tea: mango green tea with double tapioca. Authentic flavour - 3/5 Not real fruit, definitely syrup. As a result, the drinks can get really sweet compared to some of the other bubble tea locations in town. I remedy this by asking for "light sugar", which they are happy to comply with. Still, you'll probably taste more of the syrup than the tea. Boba flavour & consistency - 4/5 Consistency is perfect, rivalled only by Teapioca Lounge to the far north. The bubbles are always thoroughly cooked through, soft and chewy but never too slimy. The sugar coating is a too sweet for mem though - I don't know what they use, but it is by far the sweetest boba I've had in the Austin area. This might be great for some people, but I don't like sticky-sweet boba :( Thankfully, however, they do give me a legitimate double serving when I ask for it, hooray! Menu variety - 5/5 Awesome. They have milk teas, fruit teas, slushies, smoothies, and juices. For those who are dropping by for food, they have a TON of appetizers and entrees. Everyone I bring to Coco's ends up finding something that they like. Beware, though, these are mainly Taiwanese variants of food, so when you order lo mein, don't expect it to taste like the greasy American-Chinese concoctions from Panda Express. The food tastes authentic and is always fast to come out. Protip: order the peppercorn chicken. You will not regret it. Cafe decor and ambiance - 3/5 The place is way too popular for its own good - there's not a lot of seating, and it gets cramped really easily (especially during lunch/dinner hours). The seats are all metal and the general ambiance is a little cold and steely, but it also matches the fast-casual look they're going for. In general, if you come with a group during busy hours, expect to not find a seat. If you're alone, it's usually no problem since you can easily sit at the bar tables. Oh, and they have plugs for your laptops if you want to (try to) get work done. It tends to be noisy though. In terms of service, Coco's is hit or miss. So disappointed in my last experience here. Coco's was one of the first places I ever ate at when I first moved to Austin and even though I never thought it was amazing, it used to be a nice, satisfactory meal close to campus that reminded me of home (before all these Asian food trucks/don/etc) started opening on the drag. They've been steadily hiking up their prices now so that a bowl of beef noodle soup is now close to $9 (used to be around $6 when I first came here) and the quality of the food has gone down. I got a bowl of the beef noodle soup and the first thing I noticed was that broth was super watery. Also, the beef itself was extremely tough and hard to eat. I ended up just eating the noodles to fill me up -- I ended up full but very unsatisfied. Very sad at how Coco's has changed over the years. I hated coco's when I first tried it because I had the ground pork rice bowl, which I wasn't a big fan of. However, I'm glad I gave it a second chance. Food items I've had and liked are the beef noodle soup and the spicy peppercorn chicken with rice. My friend likes the curry pork with rice dish. The green onion pancake is alright. My favorite drink is the avocado smoothie. I haven't found another place that makes it as well as coco's does. It might sound strange at first but it's sweet, creamy, and refreshing. I also enjoy the watermelon and green tea smoothies. Coco's is good for fruity/smoothie drinks while taphouse may be a better and cheaper option for (flavored) tea drinks. Finally had some time to come down and give Coco's a try. I was always confused by the name CoCo's because growing up in California I remember CoCo's being a chain restaurant very similar to Denny's. So with that in mind, when I hear CoCo's, my image is of a sit down Denny's style restaurant which this definitely is not. This is a small cafe with a couple of counter type seating areas and a few sit down tables where you order at the counter, get a number and they bring the food to you. We ordered a spicy beef soup, a curry chicken with rice, seasonal veggies, and a half green onion pie. Also got an almond milk tea with tapioca to drink. I have to say everything was delicious with my favorites being the seasonal veggies, the green onion pie, and the tapioca balls in the milk tea. These stood out to me as being unique in flavor and something I would definitely order any time I come. Not to say the dishes we ordered themselves weren't great because they were, but I wanted to point out the things that I felt were special. Another cool thing, with food orders they have a free vegetable self serve soup that us also quite a treat. It is like an egg drop soup with veggies. I've been eating here for a few years now, almost always order the same thing, peppercorn shrimp or tofu. the food tonight was MUCH saltier than usual. I have been coming to Coco's Cafe since 2011, and their overall quality has dropped quite a bit since then. Their portions have decreased, and their food has become a mess. I normally get the Peppercorn Chicken with Rice or the Ground Pork with Rice when I come here. In the past, they gave much larger portions of chicken, but now they have more fried batter than chicken. I feel like I'm eating a pile of grease when I come here. Their food used to be good but has gone downhill on quality and taste. I used to order the peppercorn chicken every time but after their decrease in portion size and the taste, I've cut my visits to a minimum. Coco's Cafe is very nostalgic of my college years. Now it is a must visit destination whenever we return to Austin, TX. I love their food, drinks and atmosphere. I liked the Chinese marinated pickles (sweet/sour cabbage), large portion for the price. But the main chicken was too bland and plain, no taste really. Breading:chicken ratio was 2:1. FOOD I recommend the spicy beef noodle soup or peppercorn chicken with rice. The spicy beef noodle soup comes with these pickled greens on the side. Their noodles aren't the best, but they'll do for noodles close to campus. Beef can be hit or miss. The peppercorn chicken comes with one scooping of rice (menu on wall is deceiving because it shows two helpings of rice), your peppercorn chicken (basically fried chicken bites covered in peppers, and a few pickled cabbage pieces. I am sensitive to spiciness, but I still enjoy this dish (I just eat the chicken and avoid the peppers!) Their food is inconsistent though...sometimes you will get a lot of chicken, sometimes you will get a lot of peppers. Sometimes the meat will be tender, and other times it won't be. Honestly, it's average, nothing amazing. Close to campus with decent food. DRINKS There are some things I prefer here over Tapioca House next door and that is their boba (the sinker only not the entire drink). I also like the Taro Milk and Taro Smoothie here (beware it is on the sweeter end). I do not like their black tea, yogurt green tea, or mango green tea. Not all smoothies/slushies are made with fresh fruits, as indicated on their menu. The drinks here are pricier compared to Tapioca House and there are no punch cards sadly. OTHER - Limited tables here. They recently "upgraded" their tables and have stools. Went in on my first night at UT and was blown away with how good the food was. After that first time, I've been here multiple times throughout the years and my order is always the same because it's just so good. I order the thai tea flavored bubble tea and the peppercorn chicken with rice. The chicken comes with a relish and jalapenos which are a must for every delicious bite. They give just enough food to fill you up so you don't have to worry about taking it home and the service is quick! Being struck with tonsillitis makes for a limited food selection. Thus, I decided to come to Coco's to try out their noodle soup and to finally stop my stomach from eating itself. They must put magical spices or crack in their broth because it is freaking delicious. I am not even a huge fan of noodle soup, but this is one of the best I have tasted, and I have come back for it two nights in a row. It is pretty simple with just baby bok choy and some cilantro. The noodles remind me of the thinner sister of Udon noodles. The first night, we also had the eggs in a blanket, which were not bad. Next time I want to try the green onion pancake and the bamboo sticky rice. The very first time I came to Coco's months ago, I had the peppercorn chicken, which is spicy goodness. We go here after church for bubble tea, smoothies and more. My kids are hooked on the peppercorn shrimp. And all of us are hooked on their drinks. I am giving it an A-OK more out of frustration. Quality is good as is the consistancy. The problem we are having is getting what we ordered. It has happened more than one time. My kids order peppercorn shrimp. We pay for peppercorn shrimp. And we get peppercorn chicken. This has happened 3 times now. If we are still at the restaurant (instead of having ordered it to go) and discover it, they will exchange it assuming we actually received a receipt to prove what was ordered. Receipts are not given automatically even when using a credit card. If not we do not discover the error before leaving or do not have a receipt we are stuck with chicken which costs less and our kids have out grown chicken nuggets! This is a casual, counter service East (Southeast?) Asian spot with a few tables and take out. I initially thought it was just a bubble-tea place but it has a solid menu of filling and delicious dishes. I've had a few dishes and they were universally good-sized and good quality. I like the spicy beef soup. It's not that spicy and has complex flavors and artistry that I would expect of a such a casual place. The beef is a tougher cut. Sometimes I think they cook that for hours to make it nice and soft and other times not. Still, a solid choice with good portions of meat. The ground pork bowl is misleading. It's more like diced pork and much better than it sounds. It is incredibly lean pork, nicely seasoned, and served over rice. It comes with a soy-sauce hard-boiled egg. If you're new to this type of cuisine, it can be off-putting in appearance since it's an ugly brown but taste it - wonderful. You also get "pickles" which is mostly pickled cabbage with maybe a bit of carrot. Delicious. If I were to offer a bit of advice the place, I'd suggest upping that description to reflect how much more appetizing it is than "ground pork" since that term, to me at least, means it might be really greasy. It's not. It's a good dish. The peppercorn chicken bowl is my favorite but again the description sells it short. It's like karaage chicken - bits of moist (leg?) meat tossed in a light (starch?) batter and expertly fried. I didn't see any peppercorns but I'm not complaining. Instead, there are tons of jalapeños slices throughout making this a potentially spicy dish. Don't want it so spicy? Push the jalapeños slices aside - you can chose your level of heat. Served with rice and - I think - their "pickles". It's a great dish. Even when "old" - as in I got take out and couldn't eat it right away and it sat. There's a little side "bar" with cold water and some condiments. I love that you can serve yourself a free little soup (egg/cabbage mostly - tasty) while you wait. There's black vinegar, some sauces, and what I like best - the chopped jalapeños in soy sauce. Nicely done. There's a tiny parking lot behind the restaurant. Please don't tell anyone as there are like 3 spots and I need one! That being said, if you use their itty-bitty parking, tell them. You often have to block other cars there so it's just polite to let them know in case you block a patron who needs to get out. The prices are $9-12 or so. I think this place is better than it thinks it is on the food scene. (I don't know about the million drinks they offer.) I have been here a handful of times because it is literally the only bubble tea cafe nearby - and quite possibly the only decent one that serves Taiwanese food. However, I do find that each time I visit, the drinks are made different each time (sometimes too sweet or no sugar at all) and the food portions vary (more meat/ less meat/ less rice - you get the point). So sometimes Coco's can be a hit or a miss. But I do like coming here to get my fix of TW Cafe food and also the staff are much more pleasant than the other bbt place a few doors down. This place is still a stalwart for me every time I want to eat around campus because a. it's asian food and b. its predictable. Having been here so many times, I have narrowed my dish selection down to this: 1. Green Onion Pie - if I'm really hungry I could just eat a whole one for dinner, with some friends eating away at part of it too...really cheap, tasty and filling though likely not good for one's health. 2. Beef Noodle Soup- Julie's opened recently a block down, which takes away some of the magic of this one, but still very good. 3. Bacon Pork/Three Layer Pork - i love this dish and its the only place relatively even close by that serves it. bit hard to finish some days because of the fattiness, but they do it well. I actually am not that huge a fan of the peppercorn chicken though everything else likes it. Tonight I got the beef noodle soup. Promptly served within 5 minutes of ordering. Good broth, soft beef (though I wish I had more tendon) and chewy noodles (though not hand cut). I've only come here to get the peppercorn chicken and bubble tea. 90% of the time I only get bubble tea...the cookies and cream flavor. Never had any real problems with it so far other than a bit of inconsistency with the blending (a bit of ice chunks here and there.) One thing I don't understand is why the portion ratio of chicken to pepper is equal...and not like 60:40 or 75:25 chicken:pepper, haha. I mean it doesn't BOTHER me it's just kind of..weird. I didn't know people liked to eat so many peppers. The portioning overall is still worth the price so no complaints there. I order the curry tofu when I come here - it tastes exactly like you think curry tofu would take, nothing spectacular, but decent if you are looking for a pretty filling meal. The ground pork with rice is also yummy - it just tastes like ground pork, soy sauce, and rice, which is always nice. Noodle soup and peppercorn chicken are also good - peppercorn chicken is super flavorful and a bit spicy after more than a few bites. I also order the green onion pancake, which is pretty average and gets the job done. I once ordered the eggs in a blanket...lol, it was just a scrambled egg in a grocery-store tortilla...and it was also lukewarm...I don't know what I expected... In terms of drinks, they are pretty expensive, so I don't typically order them here. I like their mango and almond slushes though! I don't have much to say about this place, haha. The food is very average, but it's a good place to get relatively cheap, quick Asian food near campus. read more

So I only really come here with my girlfriend for the shaved ice. It's under $5 which includes four toppings. There is a good amount of toppings to choose from, such as watermelon, mango, coffee jelly, taro, red and green bean, lychee jelly, egg pudding, honeydew, candied pineapple, grass jelly, and several more. They will fill up your bowl with more ice or condensed milk/brown sugar when/if you run out!!! Can't beat that. The food is Amercanized Taiwanese. As a Taiwanese, it does the job when I'm craving something closer to home. Beef noodle is good. read more

What we got: Peppercorn shrimp and spicy beef noodle soup. I have been coming to Coco's ever since I moved to Austin. They used to be one of the few places that had bubble tea. The food here is amazing for any type of people. The menu is on the wall so it's great that there are pictures for everything before you order it. You could take your pickiest eater and they would be able to find something to eat here. The staff is always friendly and service is fast. read more
