Tapioca House has been part of the UT ATX campus since the early 2000s. It's located on The Drag right near the college. For obvious reasons, the customer base is primarily students, toss in their parents, and alumni/Austin residents like us. The restaurant is small and welcoming with excellent service. Easy self-ordering process. Super cute decor. Fairy lights and adorable murals. They have a small area where they sell jewelry, stickers, and so on. They serve authentic Taiwanese comfort food like chow mein, low mein, dumplings, noodle soup, rice dishes, and more. They've got an extensive and wonderful selection of boba, milk teas, smoothies, etc. You can customize your drink choices with add-ins, amount of ice, sugar level, and more. From the minute you walk in the door to your first sip of a drink or bite of food, it's magical. Feels like a shop you'd expect to find in Taiwan. Great flavors. Great people. Good for late-night cravings. Located on the UT Austin campus area, parking can be a bit challenging and it's not free, but one nice thing is that they're open until 11 PM, making this a convenient spot for a late-night snack. I ordered the Spicy Beef Noodle. Unfortunately, the beef was very tough and hard to chew, and the soup tasted more like an artificial pho broth. I got a honeydew slush with Boba, it was definitely really sweet even though I got 75%, but the flavor profile was pretty good, the Boba was all right, more of a medium firm, chewy consistency, it is in the UT area so there's a lot of students that are there. Service was moderate you order on a kiosk, and then they bring out your order, waited for close to almost 10 minutes, but that was expected with the amount of people that were there. This place got new ownership Oct 2021, so the quality went up a lot! The price went up as well, but it was nice to support our local Tap House. The combo plates were okay. The grilled chicken was better than the pork, since the pork was a bit tough. The noodle dishes were not bad, but were mainly noodle. Service is slow since there was only two people there to cook and take orders. The snacks were solid. Crispy tofu was crispy and really soft, and you get a lot. Veggie dumplings were crispy and delicious, but you only get 6. The fried carrots were surprisingly tasty. The fried chicken and fishballs were good too but didn't stand out. If I had written this review years ago I'd probably give it 4 stars. I like the large variety of things they offer (however a detractor is they are always out of one thing or another...) I usually go for the pork with bamboo shoots combo but today I have to say it wasn't as good as I remembered and my friend felt the same way about his pork chop with rice. My daughter and I discovered the Tapioca House last summer. It's located on The Drag, across from the UT campus. It's a "blink and you'll miss it" small space. The walls inside are cheerfully painted with cute cat characters drinking boba. The times we went were all around 9pm therefore, there were not many other customers there. The dining area was clean and orderly, as was the bathroom. The employees were friendly and very helpful. My daughter loved the milk tea she ordered, and I enjoyed the mango classic iced tea. Super old bubble tea place near the UT Campus. It's as old as Coco's, which used to be the only bubble tea restaurant a couple of decades ago. Only the age of Tapioca House shows. I had the rose milk tea. I didn't try the food because the interior just looks super grimy in general. The rose flavor is good, and I wish that more bubble tea places offered rose flavors. However, if the rose syrup wasn't inside the tea, the tea itself would not be that great. Parking sucks. You're near campus, so don't think about finding free parking that's easy to park in. The best time to go to places near UT is to go during breaks. Summer break, spring break, winter break, etc. Parking during the weekend afternoons is free. read more

They pretty much sell out of everything by the end of the night, so the cashier made up a concoction for me. Looks kind of like a Christmas drink, doesn't it? To start off, I was a big fan of the bubble tea and the large variety and selection of the drinks. I really appreciate the hours it's open as well, and the environment is cute but on the small side. I'm giving this place 3/5 stars because of one small instance that really stood out to me and exposed the customer service. When I went up to order my drink, the woman at the front had earbuds in (which I feel is harmless, but still a bit unprofessional). When I placed my order she made no conversation and just passed me a tablet to put in my tip (to which I did tip, because it's proper), but she also acted hostile as if she didn't want to be there and that I was bothering her. The original tea I got wasn't necessarily to my liking which is my fault because it was the first time I tried it and I simply didn't like it. I was happy to go back up and order another drink. The woman at the counter remained quiet and bothered but this time she was on the phone with someone which was clearly shown with the earbuds and the conversation she was having whilst placing my order. I found this quite rude due to the fact that I was confused whether or not she was talking to me or to her friend on the phone. This place is always a hit or miss, but is your spot for any of your bubble tea cravings and late night snacks! The low prices and plethora of choices is a huge plus, and they're open till late. Also, with their recent renovation, the interior looks so much cleaner and feels a bit more spacious than before. The boba is fresh at times and other times, not so much. Or they can even mix the fresh boba with the old boba and it confuses your mouth with the chewy/hard combo. How do people find this place?! The doorway is recessed, there's no signage, and no outdoor seating. If not for Yelp, I would have had no idea it existed. This is coming from someone who used to go to Coco's (2 doors down) every day for a semester to get my bubble tea fix. Someone buy this establishment a sign, at least! Authentic flavour - 2/5 Not real fruit - definitely syrup. However, they actually don't put in a lot of syrup. My tea actually tasted like... well, tea! I could taste a hint of mango, but it wasn't super overpowering. I'm a little torn - on one hand, I love sugary-tasting mango green teas IF the fruit is fresh, but if not, then I would prefer the cafe hold back on the syrup. Tapioca did a good job of not making my drink overpoweringly sweet, but it literally just tasted like watered-down green tea. Sigh. Boba flavour & consistency - 3/5 Boba was cooked a little chewier than I usually prefer. And like many of the places I've tried lately, they're not coating the bubbles with a sufficient layer of sugar. They end up tasting... well, pretty tasteless. Thankfully not bitter, but definitely not as sweet as I would like them to be either. However - and this is important - I asked for a double order of tapioca and actually got A DOUBLE ORDER OF TAPIOCA. The bubbles filled half of my cup. Finally, a place who understands! Menu variety - 3/5 Huge selection. Along with your usual milk teas, fruit teas, smoothies, slushies, and fruit teas, they also have a pretty extensive food menu. A lot of the menu items are awkwardly and ambiguously translated, though, so ask the cashier if you aren't sure what something is. The Chinese names are written next to them for those of us who read it, but for the unsuspecting non-Chinese-reader, choosing between "Crispy Chicken Nuggets with Rice" and "Crispy Chicken Steak with Rice" might be a little like playing food roulette. I haven't eaten the food myself, but judging from the food on the plate of the poor lone soul who had stumbled in and ordered a chicken dish, I'm probably going to pass. Cafe decor and ambiance - 1/5 Tapioca House has the vibe of one of those New York Chinatown hole-in-the-wall cafes. Laminated wall menus, dingy chairs, sketchy bathroom. Not someplace where I would stay and eat. Seating isn't horrible but there isn't a ton of it. Mainly 2-person tables lined up along a wall of booth seating (so you can arrange appropriately if you have a large party). No outdoor seating except for a few bar stools next to what is effectively a wide rail.... And it's dirty, in that same New York Chinatown way. Take your drinks to go :/ Final rating - 2/5 stars Keep in mind I'm primarily rating the bubble tea here. Overall, Tapioca House isn't *terrible*, but that there are better options around town for both bubble tea and food. Where else in Austin (besides McDonald's fast food) do you get food this cheap? I ordered the chicken nuggets with medium spicy. I only ordered bubble tea, so this review is not about food. I always get barley milk tea if it's on the menu, so I have had some amazing teas and some not so much. Tapioca House barley milk tea was just meh. Flavor was not there, and I tasted powder not melted. It was just gross. Tapioca pearls were soft and fresh, and I loved them. It's pretty neat because you can get a boba with extra dollar if you get the food here. The food is not that bad and I find it's very filling and good taste.
