Good selection of teas. The milk tea is a bit too sweet (even at 25%) and quite creamy.

Despite the terrible, non-existent parking, I enjoy coming here for the comfort food. You really can't beat the meals you can grab here: rice, bean sprouts, green beans, and a soy sauce egg every. single. order. It's comfort food personified for me. The drink selection is large, with all of the usual favorites. Sometimes they're out of things (avocados, usually) but I like that they use fresh fruits. Not sure if they offer alternatives to non-dairy creamer, but it would be nice! Service is hit or miss as it's mostly college kids trying to balance school, life, and (usually) working alone. It can get pretty busy quickly with only one person managing the register and having to make all the drinks, so come with that in mind or order ahead online/by phone. They've made some nice renovations and decorating updates in the past few years so it's a lot more aesthetically pleasing than it was in 2012. (Don't know if that's deterred anyone for the past 8 years but who knows!) It was something I noticed as it used to be kind of depressing to go there. P.S. Their nuggets were good but it didn't come with fried basil which is something they advertise in one of their picture. The drinks were good too. This is pretty good boba. I got the Taro smoothie and the honeydew melon... compared to the boba shop next door (Coco's) I would say Tapioca House has better honeydew! They also serve fire ants on the menu (which is a pork dish, not actual fire ants) that would be a fun dish to jokingly try with friends!! All in all probably my go to boba place in Austin. Tried the passion fruit green tea (large) with rainbow jelly. The staff was super nice, the menu was easy to navigate and order from, there's definitely a variety of drinks to order and it's a quick order and out process. My drink I was not a fan of. It was so...."tart". I'm not sure if it was the passion fruit flavoring or the green tea but I just wasn't a fan. The jelly's were super tasty though. The food here is definitely nothing special and they're drinks are overly sweet. I asked if they could give me half sugar and they said they can't control the sweetness level because the flavors are already pre-mixed in a powder... so I guess that means my taro milk tea didn't have any sort of real taro chunk in It but was just artificially sweetened. Food wise, nothing spectacular but just simple Asian street food that is mediocrely prepared. The inside seating is also pretty crammed and limited so I wouldn't really recommend this place, but if you're wanting Asian street food, it is slightly cheaper than Coco's nearby so I guess you would come here for that. read more

To start off, I was a big fan of the bubble tea and the large variety and selection of the drinks. I really appreciate the hours it's open as well, and the environment is cute but on the small side. I'm giving this place 3/5 stars because of one small instance that really stood out to me and exposed the customer service. When I went up to order my drink, the woman at the front had earbuds in (which I feel is harmless, but still a bit unprofessional). When I placed my order she made no conversation and just passed me a tablet to put in my tip (to which I did tip, because it's proper), but she also acted hostile as if she didn't want to be there and that I was bothering her. The original tea I got wasn't necessarily to my liking which is my fault because it was the first time I tried it and I simply didn't like it. I was happy to go back up and order another drink. The woman at the counter remained quiet and bothered but this time she was on the phone with someone which was clearly shown with the earbuds and the conversation she was having whilst placing my order. I found this quite rude due to the fact that I was confused whether or not she was talking to me or to her friend on the phone. Other than that, I do enjoy this place and the selection is large, quite good, and definitely lower priced than many tapioca establishments around Austin. read more

Every time I enter this establishment, I always ask myself, "why do I doing this to myself?". And without fail, this place always makes me feel much worse than I felt before I entered. Overall, the reason for the low rating is that the amount of cons severely outweigh the number of pros. To start, upon entering Tap House, it's interior gives off a bad impression. Maybe due to the age of the building, but the whole place looks run down and poorly maintained. Looking past the interior when ordering, in all the times i've been here, I have never once seen any of the employees focused on the job. Even during peak hours, most of the time they're either on their phones or studying. While waiting for our food, Lucy and I played Connect 4. While in the beginning, the games were new, after a while, they got beat up, broken and dirty. When the food came, everything was fast and efficient, but shortly after we finished eating, we both simultaneously started feeling queasy The worst part are the numerous rumors I have heard of health code violations. While I haven't personally confirmed anything that breaks the code, through word of mouth, I hear mention of cockroaches in the kitchen. Although not something to take heavily, the appearance of the interior brings credibility to this rumor. Looking past all these negatives, when in a hurry, Tap House is one of the best establishments to get milk tea on the quick and cheap. Walked in and the inside wasn't incredibly well decorated nor did it feel incredibly homey like a normal boba shop. In addition, the service was fast and the employee was nice but I didn't think it was incredibly professional to be on your phone when customers are around. Ordered the strawberry mango slush. It was okay but not incredibly good. I probably wouldn't order it again as the flavors weren't as fruity as I expected as I have gone to other boba shops but have gotten the rich fruitiness that comes with fruit slushes. read more

Not good, this place is nothing like the Houston location. The tea is not very good, service is okay but wasn't offered large size even though we noticed they had it afterwards. Also offered a cup of large boba straws even though our drink had no toppings only to later have to search for smaller straws ourselves. Worst of all is the popcorn chicken. I ordered the regular size honey milk tea, no ice, half sweet, with the regular sized tapioca pearls. It came out to $3.78 including tax. I've tried boba at Gong Cha and Coco's Cafe and I liked this drink the most (though, to be fair, I got different drinks at each place, and I may have to give Gong Cha another shot). The boba was of just the right consistency and texture, with an average serving size. The sweetness seemed just right, as a person that regularly orders boba with lower sugar levels. However, they did mess up orders - I requested no ice, but got ice...meanwhile, my friend ordered an iced coffee, but the ice all melted upon serving, so it was awkwardly lukewarm (in more ways than one). They did accommodate her request to get ice in another cup, so she could transfer her drink to it. The orders also came out at weird times, and not in any chronological fashion, although that may be because certain drinks take longer to prepare. The ambiance was nice enough with adequate seating and a restroom, though it was somewhat dim (on an overcast day). The chairs weren't the cleanest-looking either, but that may be because the booth seating stains easily with fabric upholstery. Overall, I would come here again, but I wouldn't place too high of an expectation on getting my order done correctly. read more

Tapioca House is the go-to place for a cheap lunch or dinner. It even closes late so its convenient for a light meal after a night of studying. The combo meals don't taste very good, but they do have a decent portion. I have tried the majority of the combos, and my favorite is the grilled pork chop with rice. It is cheap and it comes with bean sprouts, and a boiled egg. They even give you a green tea or black tea. The majority of the other combos are very salty and unappetizing. In addition, the workers at the front are not very good at their job. They are more concerned with playing on their computers or phone than providing good customer service. Overall, if its late at night, and you have no where else to go, Tap House is the place for you! read more

I don't know why people have this place such low stars because I absolutely love it here! I normally go after class so I'll probably be there around noon or so. I love the jasmine milk tea. It's flavor is so light and it's sweet but not too sweet. I used to get the regular pearls, but now I get the baby ones because I feel like I can sip more without running out of them, hahaha. Depending on the time of day you go, the pearls may end up a bit soft or mushy but not to where it's not edible or unbearable. I think it's like that for every tapioca place though. Especially on a slow day. As for the food, the only thing I've had were the smack sized chicken nugget balls. I think that's what they're called. I'm not a big fan of tapioca drinks, in general, but I wanted to write this review because the service here was just so horribly slow that I feel like warning others. My friend and I came in on a Saturday afternoon. No one else in sight. No other customers sitting in chairs. No one in line. The only worker we saw was one guy sitting near the cash register, surfing the internet. There was a lot of stuff to choose from, so we stood back a little bit and appraised the boards. Finally, we made our decisions, approached the counter, and waited. I swear, the guy looked at us, then continued surfing. After about two minutes of waiting to be noticed, I went to the bathroom. I came back and stood in front of the counter again and waited.... Finally I said, "Um?" and the guy looked up, stood, and didn't say anything. No smile, not even "What do you want?" The juice that I got was interesting, though -- kumquat lemon. Reading these other reviews of "friendly" counter people makes me want to go back and try other flavors because maybe this one bored, poor soul was just a fluke, and my next visit may be better. This place definitely needs a revamp for its decor, staff and food.... Dirty floor, tables and seats. Seems like the AC needs to replaced (or they are not willing turn it up). Staff do not show any signs of any emotions. Unpleasant & unfriendly service. A smile or an acknowledgement would go a long way! Decent priced drinks, but mediocre food. I forgot I had been here before and decided it wasn't good, so I succumbed myself to having another nasty bubble tea. Too much sweetener! Over cooked boba. They use Torani syrup flavoring. It's not made fresh, they have pots of the base flavor made up in a case and pour it in the cup with a soup ladle. So gross I felt nauseas and had to throw away half of it. Coco's cafe may be the exciting new girlfriend, but Tap House will always be the first. Tap House is the first restaurant on the Drag that I've eaten at and is responsible for my first bubble tea. It's nostalgic to finally review this place after first eating there 6 years ago. Yet, there's really not much to say. Their food isn't spectacular or fancy, but it doesn't have to be. With restaurants coming and going on the Drag, Tap House is consistent and holds a firm stand. My entree of choice is their Curry Chicken w/ Rice. A savory texture, the chicken is always cooked just right, soaked up the curry, and the bean sprouts are full of flavor. Chop up the hard boiled egg, mix it around, and just enjoy the meal in its simplicity. Honestly, I still cannot say that I like bubble tea. But one that do absolutely enjoy is Tap House's Hazelnut Milk Tea, and I'll get it whenever I can. Never watery or too sweet, I'll sip one up over an overpriced Starbucks frapp any day. The pearls are consistently soft and tasty, something not every tapioca cafe can boast. Is it the best chinese food on the Drag? Definitely not, head over to Coco's. We may have enjoyed the boba tea if it was even possible to drink it. They ran out of large straws which made it literally impossible to drink. The boba would get lodged at the entrance of the too-small straw and prevent any of the tea from getting through. I've called twice and even written a letter with no response. The tea isn't something AMAZING that I would go out of my way to buy but it's so dirt cheap. You get a free tea with any combo which you can upgrade for like 50 cents or something to add in milk. I always get the spicy popcorn chicken nugget combo at a spicy level of 5. I would say that no matter how many times I ask for 5, or 0 like recently, it all taste the same to me and is not spicy at all. I always add sriracha and hot chili oil on the side anyways. I come back for its cheap price. It fills you up and it's not horrible quality! It's decent food and it does its job which is what any college student could ask for! read more

This place is the one to go to if you're looking for good, cheap, boba. It's not the absolute best I've had, but it's consistent and tasty. The thing that is really great here though is the sesame balls! They serve them hot out of the fryer so you have to wait a few minutes to eat them but they are absolutely scrummy! My wife & and I came here yesterday to get a cold drink. We were walking on MLK and saw a 7-11 on the corner of Guadalupe. But before we crossed, I saw the sign to the Tapioca House and turned around. We walked in around 4:30 PM, and the place was almost full of young folks (mostly students, I gather). My wife ordered a pinapple green tea with pearls, while I ordered a large litchi slushy (no pearls). While we waited on our drinks, I looked around. There were several different flavors and drink varations offered, as well as some food items (I don't tend to order food at these places). But the place was clean, which is what I cared about. The drinks came out quickly, and they were welcome to (attempt to) beat the Austin heat and humidity. I was glad to find this little taste of Asia near the University Campus. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants on the Drag for its well-balanced meal with a noticeable helping of vegetables and the soy sauce egg in the combos. These do not come with some of the dishes though, such as lo mein or soup noodles. I also loved how I could get a drink - water or black/green tea with pearls. It was worth it for the price before they remodeled and raised the prices. I'm giving it 4 stars for the nostalgia and good memories since this was my Asian comfort food. I would also come here with friends for boba for their good prices, which have risen, and they have, or maybe had, a few board games. And they're the boba shop that stay open the latest in the area. While sometimes the portions seemed lacking, it depends on what you order and the day. My experience getting grilled pork seemed to get me smaller portions than fried pork. Also, their teas are rather off since they have an off bitter taste, but I would get the bubble/boba teas since the combos came with a drink. Sweetness level only goes down to 50% minimum unless you want 0% since you'll notice the drop in flavor with less syrup added. I came here twice in a row for barley milk tea since I heard it was chewy, but they were out both times! Beware though, one time the rice tasted like soap, and another time the rice did not seem adequately cooked. Service is alright. Although I once heard one of the cashiers complaining about tips while waiting for my food, she did help me clean up and replaced my boba the time my straw destroyed (and spilled) my boba cup. read more

To be honest, even though I can't really give Tap House more than two stars, I will still keep coming back whenever I get bored of Coco's tap. First off, it's not bad. The exterior is pretty tragic, but they did some redecoration inside, so it looks a bit better than last year. There are no outlets, though, so not really a study spot. Decent place to hang out and talk with friends, though. Service tends to be average; nothing above and beyond, but it's run by college students so it's very relaxed and chill. Drinks are decent. I like their simple Honey Black Tea with tap. Their green tea, though, is not very good. Very very bitter. Milk teas taste okay, but something about the texture makes it taste a little weird, so I prefer Coco's for milk-drinks. Food is eh. Spice levels can be arbitrary, and salt doesn't seem to be very consistent. One time I went, and for some reason, my food was ridiculously salty. The next time, it was fine. Very random. I like the House Special Fried Rice and Pork Stew with Potatoes. Honestly, no one screws up fried rice. The Crispy Chicken Nuggets (snack or meal) are decent, but very very greasy. Be prepared. Overall not a disaster, and as a bobaddict, I will be back, but I wish they could improve the ambiance, milk tea texture, and general food quality. read more
