Wow. Food is without a doubt incredible. My best friend and I ordered the Tostadas, Mexican Street Corn, Flautas Mexicanas, Carnitas Tacos, Beef Nachos & Guacamole -- all was tasty; So full of flavor and fresh. The guacamole was my absolute favorite. For drinks I had "La Pendeja" it was very strong and since I'm such a lightweight I was feeling tipsy by that one drink. Customer service was great. Our waitress was very accommodating and kept making sure we were okay without being overbearing. I loved the decor of this spot. Music wasn't super loud so it was easy to talk. I was super excited to finally get to try this place. Alas there is slight disappointment, the staff was amazing and attentive. The place proves to be a hit with the neighborhood....which is why I'm sad I didn't have a more enjoyable experience. Cocina Chente during Covid review First off, I will start that I love el Chente as they serve great food, host good deals on brunches, and the drinks are good. With that being said, I decided to go out for a COVID lunch. Starters guac and chips El chapo Fish tacos and pork tacos The guac was seasoned but for the portion, I'd skip. Seems like the portion got really small which will be the theme of today. The tacos were great. Fish tacos were crispy and juicy. The pork was juicy and I'd prefer more salt but still tasty. El Chapo - one of my fav drinks at the spot...only issue was I got half a normal serving. I asked the waiter and he said that is the normal size, to which I denied. For entree We order for the Volcan...which normally brings alot of food but we literally got two tiny pieces of meat, three thin strips of cactus, and a small chicken breast. Four shrimps and some salami. For 32 dollars portions were really small. Normally you get alot more food but hey guess we hitting tough times. I'd normally order dessert and more drinks but did not want to chance getting another half serving with a big block of ice. Again this place rocks and while everyone is dealing with COVID as best they can, the portions for the price was off. I don't mind paying for the experience as long as it is good and I'm full. After some Yelp research, I made my way to Cocina Chente. I loved the colors on the entrance; it gives the restaurant an exciting feeling! When we first arrived, there were not many other patrons, so we were able to choose where we wanted to sit. Once we sat down, we were given menus, but I kind of already knew what I was going to order since I saw the menu online. "El Volcano" seemed like a popular option and I knew I had to have it; the thing is massive and comes out sizzling hot. We also ordered chicken tacos, carnitas tacos, French fries, and chips and guac. We ordered the guac medium, but it was pretty spicy and good. For drinks, we ordered a passion fruit margarita and a coconut margarita. The coconut margarita had the right balance. The passionfruit margarita was a little bit too sour. Also, the "rosa colada," which I am guessing is a twist on a pina colada, was really good! I chose to get it without alcohol and it was so refreshing. We also ordered flan; it was overcooked. I was so disappointed since I was craving a nice homey and delicious flan! * One last issue: the owner (or one of the owners) was checking on CERTAIN tables, making sure everything was fine. After a long day of travel and lack of sleep this was actually really good for east coast Mexican food. I prepared myself to have low expectations but was seriously so happy with my meal. I had the cochinta tacos and a mezcal mojito. I'm from the south and this meal was definitely delicious and met my expectations for a creative and worth the price Mexican dish. Where to start. Had a pretty tepid date here but the guac and tacos were very tasty. That being said, portion sizes were on the smaller end which was just the right size for me as I was only looking for a snack. The waitress/ hostess at the time was kind of dismissive and rude at moments but a male waiter/ host was incredibly attentive and warm. I was tempted to make this review 4/5 stars for him as he really rescued the ambience of the place. Drinks were bit weaker than what im used to but were unique. Place was very cute overall but note about some of the clientele: two creepy guys sat at a table in the corner leering at the women in the restaurant the whole time. A hostess went over to chat with them pretty consistently and they were just there to chat at a table apparently. I always wanted to come here because it looks like a nice place. Also this is my 1st time writing a bad yelp review. I am easy to please and never complain at any restaurant. The food was 2.5 stars. But the service needs improvement for sure. Also i had the worst margarita ever. Seriously! A margarita I sat down, waiter was a nice guy, i ordered a bottle of sparkling water and guac, told him ill order my drink next time he comes. Guac was good. Water came with a lime in it, i never asked for a lime but whatever. He comes back around, and i order my drink, ...15 mins pass. I still havent gotten my drink, i am done with my guac. He passes by and i say "hey is the drink coming?" He apologized and says he forgot. The drink came. But the glass was cracked. So i decided to sent it back with him, but instead i order a margarita to make sure that i get a new drink. Cool, margarita came and it tasted sooo bad. Tasted strong with alcohol but had a old lime taste with a hint of medicine. So, i sent that back too and didnt want a drink anymore since i been there for an hour now with no drink. No problem. Im chilling. Ate the chicken flautas, 6/10 and some of the the chimi tacos 5/10. Chimi taco meat needed seasoning. I Ask for the bill. I see the margarita is charged, so i tell waiter like hey i sent this back. He said manager said to leave it on even tho i never took more than 2 sips out of it. He also said the bartender tried it (in a pandemic) and that it was fine. He said since i sent 2 drinks back they have to charge me for one. But i would have never sent the 1st one back if the GLASS WASNT CRACKED! I ask for manager for the 1st time ever (been out to eat probably over 500 times) im only 29. manager comes up. I tell her, "that 1st drink, the glass was cracked so i got a new drink to make sure it was fresh. The second drink was really bad so why is it on the bill?" She tries to "tell me what happened" i dont care what happened. How are you going to tell me about MY EXPERIENCE. THE DRINK WAS NASTY THROW IT AWAY! Anyway. The bill was $66 i left $80 on the table because i had no patience. Im sorry that i got upset, i had a bad time here since i waited 25-30 mins for my 1st drink that came in a cracked glass. Then the drink that came 10 mins later was so bad. I was there for an almost an hour and had no drink. I worked every position in a restaurant and even managed and this manager really is the reason why im here. She shouldnt try to charge me for a nasty drink and slow service and then tell me what happened. I wish i could care. But this is a restaurant i would not recommend to anyone or come to. One of my favorite places in the area! Excellent food, great margaritas. The music on the weekends is also a nice touch and creates a fun vibe. I enjoy coming here and will continue to return. The only critique I have to offer about Cocina Chente is that the service and experience is often a hit or miss. Sometimes I go and it's great, other times I go and wonder why I am even giving them my money. I would suggest sitting at the bar to anyone as the bar staff is much more polite and friendly than some of the waitresses in the establishment. I never seem disappointed at the bar, however at tables I am very underwhelmed with the service. Recently I showed up with a group of 4 and they decided to seat us at a table for four with only three chairs leaving someone in our party awkwardly standing. None of the employees were making an effort to find a seat and it was shocking to me that they would offer us a table with inadequate seating - if anything when they were made aware of the issue they should have done their best to resolve or atleast given the guy a free drink for standing at dinner. I placed an order through UberEats for 2 Chimi tacos ($7) and 2 Crispy Fish tacos ($8). Food arrived quick and still warm. They sent complimentary chips and 3 different salsas which was nice. The tacos looked good but the taste was just not it. The chimi ones were pretty flavorless which was surprising given the ingredients (cabbage, lettuce, pickled onions, ground beef, and chimi sauce). Service was excellent. My glass was never empty and waiter stopped by numerous times to make sure we were good. The food was excellent. And the decor in this place is fresh and really pretty. We don't normally order any starters unless something screams out at us, figuring we'll share main dishes instead. We got the cochinita pibil tacos along with the carnitas tacos, 4 altogether being that one order of tacos only brings 2. Both tacos consisted of pork meat. Both just deliciously smothered in some crazy tasty sauce. We loved them but wished we had more. Next came the chicken enchiladas Suizas style. You can chose different sauces. Our enchiladas were very good. Succulent white meat only with just the right amount of salsa verde on the outside but maybe 2 slivers of the cheese that is supposed to go with it. And to add to that awful surprise, we only had 2 enchiladas on our plate. Everywhere I've been to and ordered tacos or enchiladas, I've been served 3 of each. 3 tacos, 3 enchiladas etc. This place however only served 2 of each. We would be ok with that only when it was time to pay our bill, we noticed a $2 charge for ordering the Suizas style enchiladas because apparently much like guac, cheese is extra. Another thing that really turned us off was the amount of noise at this particular restaurant. Wow! Patrons at the bar screaming over loud music. We couldn't hold a conversation so we texted each other instead. Quite romantic for our 2nd wedding anniversary dinner. We will however be back for happy hour as we really enjoyed our drinks, overpriced as they were. My main complaint here is the lack of food for the price. I walked in here around 8:30pm on a Monday night with my girl friend. The first thing we noticed was the outdoor lights and seating which we definitely would've taken advantage of if it wasn't for the cooler weather. It's a small place with a romantic vibe, low lighting and table candles, but overall very cute with its hip wall paintings. They had an all night special of margaritas for $5 which were pretty good. Our waiter was attentive and courteous. The food on the other hand was mediocre. I ordered a chicken fajita which lacked flavor, although the portion of food was filling. My friend ordered the chicken tacos (2) which were also low in seasoning. Overall, good but not great. Once we finished our food, we talked over our drinks as the place closes around 12:30am, although the waiter admitted they close earlier if business is slow. I love this place!! The vibe is soo chill but trendy and fun at the same time, the waitress was so kind both times I have been, and the spicy margs I ordered were perfect. The happy hour prices are really good and include great options (including multiple flavors of margaritas). The fun floral couch and flowers outside and the bright colored walls & art all create the perfect vibe for a good & happy night. My only reason for giving 4 stars is that the food could be a bit better -- the fish is not crispy at all in the crispy fish tacos & they can be improved a bit overall - maybe a sauce should be added as well. But I think that is something that can easily be fixed and everything else was so enjoyable that I did not mind about the tacos and will definitely be back but will just try a different order. Cocina Chente is one of my favorite go-to spots in Riverdale. It provides a warm, festive atmosphere, complete with a DJ on Fridays and brunch on Sundays. It's one of the few restaurants that stays open relatively late in the otherwise sleepy neighborhood. The chefs provide an almost artisanal experience with the food as the flavor is good and has noticeable care in the presentation. There is also an impressive variety of drinks and they are all delicious! The staff is friendly and has always made me feel welcome, even when they are very busy.
