La Vie Mex is the new iteration of this space and a couple months back a few of us stopped in to check it out and to catch up. I may be bias but I find it difficult to enjoy a restaurant and the food they offer when the focus seems to be more on hookah and photo ops. We arrived at about 6pm on a Saturday and the place had some motion but was not busy. We were seated and started with drinks. Our server started off attentive. Once the drinks were corrected they were pretty good. Please note not everyone can successfully make an old fashioned even if they say they can. We started with chicken nachos and then order entrées of chicken fajitas (for me), steak fajitas, and birria tacos. Once our orders were placed our server became harder to find. However, the gentleman running the hookah was hustling and very visible. When we needed anything we had to get someone to flag our server down, whom was often at the bar as the employees were taking shots and smoking hookah themselves. My chicken fajitas were cool once I added some extra razzle dazzle of sauces. The steak fajitas were ok and the birria tacos lacked flavor as per the respective recipients. While I understand that hookah and social media aesthetics look cool for the gram & TikTok ... I wanted a dining experience and that was lacking. With apps and drinks at $18-20 and entrées starting @ $25 & up I would have preferred good food and service over the charcoal and smoke tips. Just A Note: The place is cute. The service and food leave something to be desired IMO. However, if you are looking for a vibe and not food, and don't mind a turn-up with your server over service then check out LVM

Stopped in to what was their soft opening. Friendly greetings from all staff that we encountered. Sat at the bar that has been transformed from the middle of the restaurant to the far left. Matter of fact the entire space has been transformed into what I would call a wall garden of multicolors. Complimentary Chips and Dip was offered, which is a nice touch. I will give them a pass on the chips not being fresh, hoping that this was just a circumstance of not being fully opened. We did not get a chance to try their food so cannot fully comment in that area. There is a charm to the space and its surroundings. With pumping music, warm lights and multiple pops of color. Welcome to the neighborhood La Vie Mex. Wising you much success. 3.5

Just went today. Service is slow. Bathroom has cold water and dryer cold air. No heat.

La Vie Mex is slowly improving but I still haven't really found my go-to order. The designs are really sleek and the space seems inviting. The furniture and the color palette are trendy. I love the plant/floral wall and the times I have been it seems very clean. The chips they offer to start were much better and fresh this time around. You can take the comp chips or upgrade to made-to-order guacamole or a shrimp ceviche. Their sauces, the red and green, are still all very good and seem to be homemade or even jazzed up if store bought. The Chicken flautas were really good. They are like fried rolled up stuffed tacos and then they are dressed with all sorts of sauces and lettuce. This is an item I will order again. At this point I have tried my way through all the tacos they offer. In all honesty, they are not really that great for the price point. My favorite so far has been the shrimp taco and next to that maybe the birria. One time we ordered the fish taco and it was a bit off putting, I suspected it was made with an oily fish and if I would have known I would have not ordered it. Luckily I only ordered one to try as part of an assortment of tacos. I mentioned it to the bartender because I was curious what kind of fish the kitchen used and not to my surprise she said the kitchen used salmon because they didn't have their normal fish for tacos. This is a learning opportunity for the kitchen to let the customer know that they do not have something rather than just make something with a fish that isn't normally used for fish tacos. Salmon should not be fried as it already has an oil flesh. It gives off a "fishy" profile and thats why in a fried fish taco you typically use a white, meaty, lean fish to go with all the fresh condiments in a taco. The quesadilla had a unique mixture of cheese that really didn't have a cheese pull, more like a creamy, stiff texture. A visual cheese pull is a personal preference to me but the quesadilla tasted fine. Next time I will try one of the bigger entrees. Possibly the salmon one which I have heard is good! While it may not sound like it from the information above, I do love salmon. This entree is pan seared which will be very different from trying to use salmon scraps from the belly to use for tacos. I would also be interested in the skirt steak entree. The beverage program is great and they make a great margarita so that will at least keep me going back while I continue my journey on finding my go-to meal. I love that they carry different brands of alcohol which leads me to believe they really dive into small craft, good options out there. The service is always great! They are still relatively new so I have faith that these kitchen issues will sort themselves out. I love supporting new restaurants in the neighborhood especially women owned! Good luck and I look forward to providing more stars on a future review!

I've been wanting to come here for a while now! They started to follow me on Instagram and that's how I found out about it. They were always posting stories when they first opened and definitely caught my attention when they mentioned French! Especially since you don't normally hear about Mexican and French food or decor being mixed together. I came on a Friday night around 11pm and it was raining like crazy! Funny thing is my bestfriend asked me if it was a club once she heard the music and I said noooo it's a restaurant with good music lol I did forget to tell her you can dance there too. Service was good, our waitress kept checking on us and the food was great! Drinks were pretty good! The first one was good and strong but the second one def tasted more sugary and less tequila. My drink came with casamigos but I'm not a fan of that tequila so I paired it with Don Julio Reposado & it came out delish! Highly suggest it! The dj mixed the songs great and he was engaging! I can't wait to go back and come back with the rest of my girls for brunch!

To Preface this review, we want them to do well in our neighborhood but we have had spotty experiences here. Some tacos are great! Service is consistent! It's a cute place but louder than I personally like. Wouldn't recommend fish tacos or the Al pastor but everything else was pretty good. Give me chips and salsa and don't try to upsell me?! We will come again for Liz on a Tuesday or Friday at the bar. Cheers

Breakfast tacos and Mac and cheese were flavorful.

Aesthetically pleasing. Slow service . You have to ask for refills. Mac and cheese was good. Came for brunch with a group of girls. Food came out at different times. Drinks came out at different times as well. We couldn't toast at the same time. One of our friends ate by themselves and the food order came out wrong. The chips were salty, the salsa tastes like sofrito. The only thing French is some of the decor. Don't expect anything different. It's a Mexican restaurant with French decor. Music and Bellinis were good.

There are some dedicated parking spaces that have a three hour limit if dining. Upon arrival, I entered the inside restaurant space for Dakota's on the Grove. It was aesthetically pleasing. I should have sat inside here instead of in their outdoor space which they call The Grove at Dakota's. I was able to choose where I wanted to sit, so I chose a table near this shed where the bartender/waiter was. I noticed they were setting up for the Knicks Game 3 final and there were two large TVs and a projection screen. I overheard the waiter state that the area would be packed for the game tonight. There was also good music playing throughout. They had a large connect four, which would be nice to play. They are family friendly and had high chairs for babies and toddlers. When sitting outside they state that they have to preauthorize your card. Now getting onto the food. I was seated and provided with two menus. I immediately asked for a happy hour menu and then I waited for about 15 minutes, until I followed up with another waiter who brought out the menu for me. For the happy hour menu before I received my food I initially thought the prices were good, but upon receiving my food it was evident that the prices are off in terms of the portion size of the food. I ordered a $5 slider. I thought it would be a decent size. It was incredibly small. For the $5 price they should give at minimum 2 sliders but ideally 3. This would incentivize people to buy more. The slider was the best thing I tasted while there and I would have liked more but I couldn't justify spending another $5 when it was so tiny. The tiny slider appeared to be the portion size for a toddler. I ordered calamari which was $9. I was initially disappointed that there was such a small amount. I was even more disappointed when I tasted them. They tasted very "fishy." They absolutely needed a squeeze of lemon and fresh cracked black pepper to try and balance and mask the taste. I believe the portion size for the fries was also off for $5. The fries came in a teacup. Fries are something that people tend to order to have something to pick at while dining and it would make sense I think to provide more fries for the same price. I also could not justify getting another set of fries in a small teacup for $5. I did not like the taste of the fries. When the sparse calamari, tiny beef slider, and small teacup of fries came out, I realized I would not be full and ordered chicken wings from the happy hour menu. You have to get a minimum of 6. You cannot mix the flavors. They were out of the dockside fire sauce so I went with the garlic parm. These wings did not taste like garlic parm. The garlic parm seemed like an afterthought, which was just sprinkled on the wings at the very end. The chicken itself did not have much flavor. They did not mention providing any dipping sauce. I asked for blue cheese and I had to wait for about ten minutes and then remind another waiter that I was still waiting for my blue cheese. They were out of the mozzarella sticks. Moving onto the drinks. While I get being outside and maybe wanting to serve drinks in plastic to minimize glassware breaking, I did not enjoy being served Pinot Noir in a plastic cup or the white cranberry lemon drop in a plastic cup. Each time I was taken aback that they weren't offered in glassware. I got the $7 Pinot Noir from the happy hour menu. A regular glass of Pinot Noir is $9. I also ordered the white cranberry lemon drop which is priced at $12 and is not included on the happy hour menu. The drink came out in the same sized small plastic cup as the Pinot Noir. I think once again that glassware should be used. When ordering a lemon drop you tend to expect a chilled frosty glass with a sugar rim, and that was not what I received here. I think the sugar rim would have elevated the taste profile of the drink. All in all, I really liked the outdoor area. I would probably only return to get a canned beer in the outside section. I hope they start to carry some sour beer options. I do not see myself trying the food again, with the exception of a burger (since the burger was really good.) I did have an inquiry regarding the pre-authorization charge and the final charge that I saw on my credit card. I called and left a message and the restaurant got back to me quickly, which I really appreciated.

When the wife came out, I asked if we could just have one drink at the bar since we came all the way out there, and Joe told the bartender "Let these two sit and order some drinks". The chairs are really small so it might not be comfortable for most. Also, our table was very wobbly so we moved to another one and that one ended up being wobbly too.
