We were driving from SF and were running 20 min behind, contacted them through OpenTable and got a quick response that they could move our reservation out (given that we could give the table back within a time limit). Range Days Ahead Highly-acclaimed newish restaurant (2021) that's fronted by acclaimed chefs Anthony Carron and Steven Fretz and a pastry/dessert program run by James Beard nominated pastry chef Lincoln Carson. They're already off to a ripping start, as they've already nabbed two Michelin Guide recommendations ('22 & '23) and was one of two restaurants we *had* to visit on our latest trip to Solvang. The fact that we actually visited twice (once for dinner, and once for brunch) in one visit is pretty rare for us, as we're like bumblebees that are constantly on the move from one restaurant to the next. The Good: *Locally-sourced products from their own cattle farm to fish straight from the Santa Barbara Pier. Their menu changes from season to season to highlight what's good. *Overall the service was friendly, swift, and not too annoying. There was a bit of an issue with a snarky hostess, but let's be honest, shall we, that's pretty much part of the job description for a good host/hostess. *Reservations for dinner are recommended and available thru the handy-dandy Yelp app in your hands. *Fantastic old-timey roadhouse meets burlesque shop décor. The exterior is also just as gorgeous, as they're housed in an old Victorian. *Dog-friendly outdoor seating *Booths!! Actual honest to goodness booths! I was literally just asking Carissa, "You remember when all restaurants had the privacy of a booth?" And like a prayer, the food gods answered. *Great bar and local microbrews on-tap (alcohol actually comes from their next-door sister Vaquero Bar) *Carissa's "Atlantic" salmon was cooked to absolute perfection, despite the outward Blackened appearance. One second more--and it would've been overdone. It's also important to note that they actually asked how you want your fish cooked, which is extremely rare. Medium, of course... *Potato Pierogies had a fantasticly crisp exterior and soft juicy interior. My one complaint was I wish they had a little more sauce on the dish. *Parker House Rolls, too, came out warm, soft, and so full of good buttery flavor. I'd order these again in a heartbeat. #Carboholic *I figured I should try some of their house-grown beef, and I was able to rectify that the next day as I ordered the Steak Fretz w/ eggs, and it was a breakfast fit for a king. The beef was tender, full of flavor and cooked expertly medium-rare. The well-seasoned steak fries were the perfect foil and especially when enveloped in the rich, velvety egg yolks. *Potato Cake was like a McDonald's Hasbrown on steroids. Just get it. *Carissa raved about her Eggs Benedict as "the best" she's ever had. The Meh: *Wagyu Beef Stroganoff was a bit of a letdown, especially since it was the Michelin Inspector's recommendation. Perhaps it was a case of the hype getting the better of the dish, as it wasn't bad in the least. In fact, it was quite good, but it was missing a little something to push it over the top, which is what I'd expect from a dish of this caliber. The Ugly: *Coast Range Brioche donuts were everything they're advertised and then some. Soft, tender, and a smooth not-too-sweet glaze. Did I pay $15 for two tiny donuts? Yes. Yes, I did. I rarely leave one star reviews, but the experience my siblings, boyfriend, and I had at Coast Range on Christmas Eve was so upsetting that I feel compelled to share. As a 20 year old woman who works really hard and planned this holiday road trip to give my younger siblings a memorable time, I left the restaurant feeling dismissed and disrespected. From the start, the service was abysmal. Our waitress, Yesenia, was unwelcoming and condescending, as if she had already decided that we didn't belong there. I always strive to be polite, so the coldness we received felt both unwarranted and unprofessional. To make matters worse, the hostess I'm assuming (tall white blonde woman) felt only inattentive to us. Every group around us was asked about their seating preferences (inside or outside), yet we weren't given a choice and were unceremoniously placed outside next to the door, the least desirable spot of course. This wasn't an isolated moment. I observed an Asian woman ahead of us being ignored until she physically had to wave someone down for help, while a white family in behind her was served promptly. Later, when I tried to get the hostess's attention to pay, she didn't even acknowledge me, yet she happily chatted with other (white) customers that came after. Also, the water had visible particles floating in it. Completely unacceptable for any dining establishment. The food itself was average, certainly not enough to justify the poor service or the unpleasant experience. I made a reservation for my partner's birthday a few weeks in advance. Overall, we were a bit disappointed in Coast Range. I'll start with some highlights. The cocktails were amazing ! I got the Cranberry Spritz and my partner got the zero-proof Mint to Be (Sober). Both were extremely tasty and fruity! The crust on my filet mignon was excellent, and the pomme purée was delicious. We had an issue with the brussels sprouts being too charred, but they fixed it with the new order. The house rolls are tasty, but not worth $10 imo since they're tiny and we only got two in our order. Some of my biggest cons had to do with overall ambiance. The outdoor seating is decently warm in December due to heat lamps, but it's so cramped and hard to relax. The finer details- the chairs, plateware, silverware- are not what I expected from a Michelin recommend steakhouse of this price point. The presentation of the food is extremely subpar. A $75 steak is just plopped on a plain white plate with a sad salad and roasted pepper. The salad is comprised of a microgreen in a vinagrette, I would have appreciated more effort into it, such as additional greens variety, other veggies, cheese, nuts, or fruits. In my reservation, I had detailed it was my partner's birthday. I never expect anything included for a birthday, but the table next to us received a complementary birthday dessert while we only got the check. I found it a bit strange! So I really wanted to like this place! It wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing either. I was expecting it to be a lot better too because it was rewarded Michelin star in 2022 and 2023...Their food was fresh and flavorful but my wagyu stroganoff was a little too tangy ... probably from the horseradish cream and I got a really chewy piece of meat that I couldn't even swallow. Plus on he menu I was ordering from it didn't say the meat was wagyu... I had to ask. Then their computers were down and one of the dishes that we ordered didn't get put in and the waiter forgot the drink we ordered. I do have to say the Mac and cheese was like nothing I ever tasted it was rich and creamy and I had a bite of the rigatoni and it was very delicious. So this place was conveniently located right across the street from our hotel. Lucky for us there was no wait and we're seated right away. I do believe that they take reservations.The restaurant itself is very nice and classy. It had a romantic vibe and perfect for date nights and even proposals. My husband ordered the Rib eye. It came with a side salad .He also had a side of the potatoes. Mostly everything on the menu is a la carte. I had the fried calamari appetizer as my main course. Hmmmm? I had dinner here this evening and I was disappointed. Always when going to a Michelin star restaurant, there are expectations. I always try to keep these expectations in check. Tonight I was disappointed by the lack of attention to detail from the kitchen, which is an indicator that this restaurant has lost its edge and strong leadership in the kitchen maintaining consistent quality. Let me tell you about our evening... We ordered a bottle of wine. Good etiquette observed by our server Liz. Liz was friendly and welcoming. She provided excellent service. We ordered the tuna crudo and Parker Rolls as starters. Both were very well made. The Parker Rolls were warm pillowy with butter, chives, and light salt on the top. We were off to a very good start. For entrees we ordered steaks. My wife ordered a filet and I ordered the New York strip. My entire steak was lukewarm when it was served. It must have been fired too soon and was resting for 20-25 minutes. Our side of pomme puree was also lukewarm. The pad of butter they put on top to finish the potatoes remained unmelted. That is how cool the potatoes were. They had the correct Robuchon puree consistency, but they were just not hot. These are not attributes of a high performing kitchen nor the attention of an executive chef doing their job. Very disappointing. The final straw was their signature dessert of brioche donuts with brown butter glaze. While the batter and the glaze are genius, again the execution was flawed. The donuts were not cooked long enough and were 'doughy'. Ughhh! Even though they weren't cooked long enough, the donut batter and glaze were a delicious sweet and salty treat...kind of like eating a perfect chocolate chip cookie dough raw. A guilty pleasure you know you shouldn't eat. I would have probably given Coast Range 2 stars except the service from Liz was very good. Michelin star restaurants should not have such significant flaws with cooking. If I were an Owner, I would be evaluating my executive chef and brigade leadership in the kitchen. I probably won't be back to Coast Range on future visits and will try other options in the area. read more

I agree with many other reviews that this restaurant is not Michelin star worthy, nor worth a stop in Solvang. We came at 2pm after typical peak lunch hour and it wasn't very crowded at all. We were sat in 15 minutes and we already noticed the waiters and an older lady that looked like the manager had no interest in being polite or greeting guests in a prompt manner. Overall, I didn't feel respected or appreciate coming here with my business. There was a variety of families and people grabbing drinks. We got 1/4 ribs and a caesar salad for a medium sized lunch. Ribs looked like they came from a fast food chain, however they were very tender. Interesting sauce. Caesar salad was great! Only thing I loved was meeting Gus, the restaurant dog. Everything that we had today at Coast Range was extraordinary! Chelsea was our server and she did a fantastic job and was knowledgeable about the menu. Her assistant was a great help as well although we didn't catch his name unfortunately: We started off with the Parker Rolls which were so soft and flavorful. The Caesar salad was one of the best we had ever had and had some pepitas in it for a little bit of a twist. The pierogis were excellent and had a great texture and flavor with the peach butter and sour cream emulsion. For our main me and my girl shared the 20oz Ribeye which was cooked to a perfect medium, it was super flavorful and had a good amount of fat which is our favorite. The baked potato was perfectly soft and melted in your mouth, and the jalapeño creamed corn was a perfect side to compliment the ribeye. For dessert we decided on the brioche donuts which were my favorite part of the meal! My girl got a complimentary birthday donut which was a nice surprise as well. Went on a day trip for New Year's Day since we have some visitors. Our reservation is at 5pm so we pretty much choose where we want to be seated which is outside. There are heaters so it was comfortable. There's a bar right next to it so it can be loud but we didn't mind. We were a big group and indoors they seem to only have booths. Checking the menu the selection is a bit pricey for a la carte and entrees items but they have daily specials and on the day we went it was fried chicken and waffles. We have 4 minors in our group so we ordered beef stroganoff, bunch of chicken and waffles, steak from the kids menu and ribeye steak both cooked medium, I also had the French onion soup. For the steak's sides we had the mushroom and the chicken and waffles actually come with a few side items. So this restaurant is in the Michelin guide list and while dining I wondered which dish gave them the recognition and I found out it was for their chicken sandwiches - which was not on the dinner menu. Service - I think they tried given it was a busy day, food took longer than we expected, server apologized and mentioned they are under staffed. Food was just ok - nothing memorable for me. I found this place on Yelp and thought it would be a nice spot for dinner in Solvang. I made a reservation for a Thursday night and there was a good amount of people dining. The exterior of the restaurant gave off cozy vibes. The interior was decorated with nautical art pieces which I thought was fitting with the name. Mussels (5/5): This was a delicious appetizer. The portion was huge and the broth was nicely seasoned. It wasn't too saucy which really let the mussels be the center of the meal. The bread was good too. Big Shell Mac n' Cheese (3/5): It came with 4 jumbo ricotta filled shells. The cheese was very thick and filling. I prefer just a regular mac and cheese. 22 oz Bone-in New York (3.5/5): I ordered my steak medium. Not the most tender new york strip but it was good. It was a thick piece of meat. It had a really nice sear on it which elevated the flavor. I didn't care for the side salad it came with. I wish it was just a regular salad or any vegetable. Overall, it was a nice dinner spot. One guest decided to sit at the end to be closer to the family. Our hostess seemed very unhappy voicing that she would have difficulty serving us with that seating arrangement. On this trip we ordered the Breakfast Crunch Wrap (filled to the brim with juicy steak and topped off with/the most flavorful fluffy eggs), the Crispy Chicken Sandwich, and the Bagel & Lox. Everything was fresh, flavorful and served with a smile by the sweetest staff! On previous visits we've had, dare I say - the best Ribeye steak I've ever had! The server and waitress that were assigned to us were friendly and on top of it even on a busy Saturday night. As for the meal, We each got a cocktail and they were okay, maybe 3 stars. We were thinking maybe we should've looked into if there's a cork fee & just bring a bottle of wine that we love instead. We did the 3 courses and added an appetizer which was Not our smartest move given they do good portion sizes, however it was worth it because we got the bone marrow and it was divine. First course was a shrimp Louie salad with a cup of split pea soup. 2nd was braised lamb with cheese ravioli and dessert was an apple carrot cake. Everything was delicious. Hearty and well seasoned. We had come here last spring and loved our meals! We said we would for sure be back. Today, We traveled in just to come to this spot and order the cheeseburger. However this time wasn't as good. We also got the artichoke and side of fries. My chicken sandwich was good but nothing special. Fries were perfect, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with a good amount of seasoning. The artichokes were bizarre, there was a cheese and watery sauce in the middle of the halved artichoke, which made it hard to eat and was overpowering; we would've preferred a simply grilled artichoke. Boyfriend finished his pastrami sandwich and was still hungry; so ordered the burger. Disappointed in the size of the burger/ sandwich and the artichokes were strange.
