This little bakery is a great local bakery. Staff very attentive and give great recommendations. Danish and pastry not overly sweet.

TLDR: It's simple things done well. I'm normally wary of going to places that tourists frequent, but this is a place that I feel matches the hype. Thoughts: I must admit that I'm not a bread person. The only reason I went here is that I had to take some tourists around. Solvang was a pretty obvious stop to make, and we found ourselves in Olsen's. I'm a believer of nailing the simple things, because you won't be able to hide it in fluff. What I liked about Olsen's bread is that they taste home made. The flavors taste exactly like what you asked for, and they don't have those added chemicals that certain establishments use to make the flavors "pop out". The bread was flaky, chewy, and an overall joy to consume. Ambiance: The tables and chairs had a cafe vibe (which is what the place is). It's clean, the bakery smelled great, and the high foot traffic means that the turnaround keeps the food fresh. Service: Straightforward. Pick your bread, ask your questions, and the staff will ring you up after getting what you asked for.

When you drive by Solvang, you must stop for some butter cookies. I miss the blue tin can from childhood and they didn't have any with fresh made cookies. You can always get the next best thing! Giant bucket of fresh butter cookies! Service is excellent. There is some seating.

We ordered quite a few pastries from here. Although the line was long, it moved very quickly. We couldn't wait to try one of them and pulled out the strawberry danish. We also grabbed one of the hot cross buns, a cherry and cheese danish, and an almond pastry. It was a good place to tie us over while waiting for the restaurant next door. Would recommend coming inside for a quick cute pastry.

Very quaint bakery with lots of beautiful goodies to choose from. You pick your treat and it's served to your table on a white porcelain plate. No paper plates here. Only negative is there isn't a public restroom.

Austrian Cake (a lot of almond flavor)

The bakery has some traditional charm. Busy store, the line is a bit disorganized. The baked goods are pricier than the other bakery. The store has a couple of seats inside and out, but overall really busy. Has a large selection, but the quality of the items were underwhelming. The ladyfinger (butter) cookie was $5.25 which was okay, it had filling inside. Nothing special. Somewhat hard to bite and crumby. Tiramisu roll cookie is $5.25, a bit pricey for a cookie. It is a crunchy almost like brittle cookie with mocha filling, did not also taste like coffee. The Austrian cake ($7.50) was interesting, it has a honeycomb texture on the outside, filled with a lot of almond flavor. I will come back to try the pastries rather than the cookies.

Line was long and cleared a table to sit down. Ciffee was good and we devoured our morning pastries

I was so excited to visit Solvang for their pastries! There was a line, but I felt that it moved pretty quickly. I ended up ordering the Almond Horn, which was an almond cookie that was dipped in chocolate. I really enjoyed it, and it was the perfect little snack for me in the morning. Great ambiance, since there's so many sweets to look at, and they even have a little gift shop with their own knick-knacks.

For my first trip to Solvang, I figured I needed to try this bakery. It took 30 minutes in line on a Saturday night. When I left, the line was the same as when I got in it with 30 minutes until closing! The inside had some tables and had Christmas decorations up. I bought a few pastries and a bucket of cookies. My husband and I tried some cookies in our hotel room and loved them so much we went back the next morning to buy another bucket for a gift. Everything was good and fresh but was a little too sweet for my liking. I'll be back for the cookies bucket though. My favorite was the cinnamon cookies and wish I could buy a box of just those!

Danish Raspberry and Danish Cream Cheese
    Jocelyn T.

Line was out the door when we went but it went by pretty fast!! We ordered the cream cheese danish and the raspberry danish. The danishes were standard, both 4/5. The raspberry jam flavor was really pleasant and complimented the danish. We wish the danishes were more flaked and maybe warmed up but for what it was it was a danish! There's a good amount of tables inside and they have some outside. It's a cute charming bakery and they also have the buckets of danish cookies! Good stop if you're nearby!

    Breakfast combo

We came into solvang on an early morning and this was one of the first places open. You can't beat pastries that are freshly baked. We shared the breakfast combo that comes with a pastry, roll, cheese, coffee, and juice. Oftentimes I get flaky pastries that turn out dry but these were perfectly baked- flaky on the outside and moist on the inside. I also tried some of the chocolate covered waffles but I think the bear claws and rolls is where it's at. Ambiance is no frills but you can see why this place gets busy quick

How much are the five-dozen (tub) butter cookies?

Their website is posted on their yelp page. It has all of their prices. It also has their phone number.

Stop by several times for what I'll call an elephant ear around crispy pastry with sugar and honey. Do they ship this in California?

    Yes, they do.

    Are you open Christmas Day?

They are closed on Christmas day.

Yes they do, refer to their webpage: https://www.olsensdanishvillagebakery.com They offer quite a variety for shipping.

Not a set time from what I have seen but my 11am most the pastries start to finish off. If you go in past 11 from my experience you get just what's left over.

Take a look at my photos first--the cake and the bill just didn't match. I ordered three items (two…read morecakes and a coffee), but the receipt only listed two, and they weren't even the items I had. I checked the menu and realized the bill was actually for less than I should have paid; it was likely mixed up with the customer sitting next to me, who I remember had ordered a Napoleon. Looking at the prices later, I found the menu quite strange: the Chocolate Eclair is $11.95, while the Napoleon is a dollar less. Anyone who has ever made both will admit that an eclair is much easier to prepare than a Napoleon--in fact, an eclair might be the easiest item in a bakery. It's an interesting pricing choice. This bakery must be very famous; even the AI I used to plan my trip from Pasadena to San Jose recommended it. Since it isn't peak season, I easily found a parking spot on the main street, which was a relief compared to ten years ago when I had to drive in circles to find one. Even in the off-season, there was still a line--not too long, but a line nonetheless. The pastries in the case were all beautifully made and looked delicious. It was difficult to decide, but I eventually chose a Chocolate Eclair and a Danish Waffle. I went with the eclair because it was one of the few Western-style cakes available in my hometown of Shanghai when I was growing up. I've loved them since childhood. Back then, the only other Western desserts we could find were Palmiers, Chestnut Cream Cakes, and cups of whipped cream that you would just eat directly. The eclair tasted excellent, with a texture that was a perfect mix of soft and crispy. The cream was a little oily but still acceptable, and while the whole thing was quite sweet--a bit beyond average--I could still enjoy it. The Danish Waffle looked a bit like a fried Chinese donut, or Youtiao, stuffed with whipped cream, but the outside was actually a light, crispy puff pastry. It was much better than I imagined--crispy without being hard and perfectly baked. The filling was the same cream used in the eclair, combined with raspberry jam. I later realized the Danish Waffle was only $6.25, nearly half the price of the eclair despite being just as good. It's strange that the Chocolate Eclair is the most expensive item in the bakery; it's good, but compared to the Danish Waffle, the price is a bit high. I saw some people complaining that the bakery doesn't have a restroom. When I asked, the staff politely directed me to the nearby park. I accepted the answer, though I can't imagine how they handle the crowds during the busy season. Regardless, this is a five-star experience, no doubt--just be sure to check your bill when you pay. I don't want to pay more than I owe, but I don't want to pay less, either.

Although nowadays spices are much more easier to come by (just drive down to your nearest supermarket!); many spices are still on the scarcer side and represent luxury. Have no fear, though, because you no longer have to board a ship and find the passage to the Middle East but can simply head to the Solvang Spice Merchant. Solvang Spice Merchant is a female-owned (shout out to girl bosses!) spice boutique located in the central hub of the famous Danish tourist city of Solvang near Santa Barbara. Opening its doors a couple years before the Covid pandemic in 2018; Solvang Spice Merchant not only survived but thrived with a brick and mortar storefront and an online shipping option (flat rate of $10 shipping no matter the size of purchase!). The business features hand-crafted spices and seasonings, teas, and foodie gift sets serving both tourists and Solvang residents, alike. My boyfriend and I ventured into the Solvang Spice Merchant when visiting Solvang from Los Angeles for the city's Christmas-time Julefest and gazed our eyes on a shop that would make any King or emperor proud. The store is filled with floor to ceiling shelves of spices/seasoning mixes categorized by country/region and then further sub-categorized by ingredients, styles (BBQ, Pickling, etc) available in various bottle sizes (plus some can be purchased at the counter in bulk, as well). If you can conceive a certain spice or seasoning, trust me that Solvang Spice Merchant has it! Even if you are not in the market for spices; the store is fun to browse and discover all of the spices from around the world. My personal spice journey has endlessly been looking for Garam Masala (an Indian spice) which I could have purchased at the Indian shop by my apartment in Los Angeles - but what fun is that?! It is much better to come across Garam Masala at Solvang Spice Merchant where the spices are combined by hand and with love while enjoying the world of spices! We purchased a 2.3 oz bottle (the smallest) of Garam Masala for $10.25 which isn't cheap: but expected from a boutique spice store. I have since used the spice mix on chicken, Steelhead trout and steamed veggies and it is absolute perfection and makes my apartment smell delightful with its warm spices. The only complaint? None of the two young females behind the counter welcomed us into the store, offered any samples (which I learned the store does indeed do), ask if we needed help, etc. Solvang's main gimmick is being a welcoming tourist city ESPECIALLY during Christmas as it is known as the, "Most Christmas-y City in the Nation". Unfortunately, that Hallmark Christmas movie customer service was absent the night of our visit. Despite this minor qualm; Solvang Spice Merchant is a charming spice shop fit for a King, emperor, sultan or just Averages Joes like you and I visiting Solvang. Not only will you find whatever spice your heart desires but you will have an enjoyable time simply scanning the shelves.
