First time visiting Solvang, the Denmark old town is so beautiful on Christmas Day. Stopped by this bakery for danish coffee, the taste is pretty light and not sweetened. The chocolate chips cookies is super huge, kinda interesting and I had to grab some of them. It's delicious. Love to go back for another visit.

Lovely cafe and bakery located in the central part of the city. My personal favorite is the eclair paired with a double cappuccino. This time we tried the Danish waffle, it was too sweet for our liking (both the filling and the outside). We also got another pastry which was soft and delicious (in the photo). This is a great place to try many different kinds of pastries. They also have lunch options and lots of seating.

Bought 12 different pastries to try. Out of everything I tried my favorites were the cheese danish and the apricot danish. The pastries are light and flakey and the fillings very sweet. The staff is very nice and patient.

First time visiting solvang and I heard this place was a must! We went at a time where the lines weren't long which was nice. We ordered their cinnamon crisp and a danish. They were both pretty decent! The danish was a bit too buttery/greasy? for us but it was still very good!

Wonderful service today 8/2/25 about 9:30am Two double espressos, two cheese danishes, one cinnamon roll. The espresso was bold and flavorful and the perfect temperature. The danishes were AMAZING! Fast and friendly service and a spacious inside.

We stopped off in Solvang on our way back north from Santa Barbara and were recommended by a local to try to Birkholm's as a bakery that is truly good and not just touristy. We were really blown away by how good and fresh the danishes were - we tried: guava, strawberry and cheese, pineapple, and raspberry. My favorite was the guava and I would def go back to try the cheese danish. The iced americano from their espresso counter was also decent. Finally, the service was really prompt and friendly and consistent across every employee we interacted with. They were attentive and patient, which you don't often get with busy and crowded bakeries in a tourist hotspot. 5/5!

Perfect place for a sweet snack, we try the apricot pastry and i haven't try such a perfect thing like this one, it's really delicious! We try their matcha and actually it was too sweet. But the place is always busy and they have a plenty of sweet options.

Absolutely love this place! They have a lemonade I really enjoyed and a vegan pastry my husband was able to eat! He really loved it too! The staff were super friendly and helpful despite being so busy! I highly recommend stopping by!

Morning walks are great in Solvang, and Birkholm's Bakery is one of the best parts of waking up in the Danish Capital of America. Enjoy an espresso and a variety of pastries. While several other bakeries are still getting the day started and not yet open, Birkholm's is open at 7am, perfect for early risers. They're dog friendly too! I love the Ham and Havarti croissant. Pro Tip: Get in early if you plan on trying it, they make them in limited quantity. One particular morning I stopped in during a morning walk with my dog. Returned with family around 9:30 and they were already sold out of Ham and Havarti for the day! The bakery offers a decent amount of seating inside as well as outdoor. Staff is super friendly and happy to help.

Adorable bakery with a wide selection of pastries, breads, and cookies! There are so many options to choose from it's like being in Willy Wonka's candy factory. The smell in here is incredible! We grabbed a sandwich during a quick pit stop in Solvang, and enjoyed the back covered patio with our dog. The salami sandwich was carefully made with many layers of thinly sliced veggies, generous amount of salami, and fluffy fresh bread spread evenly with honey mustard. It was a delight! We also opted for a bucket of cookies, which were fantastically buttery, not too sweet, and packed full of a variety of flavors.

Bought the onion cheese bread on Saturday. I thought that it was freshly baked. Three days later, I found mold on the bottom of the loaf. Very disappointed! Don't buy anything from this bakery unless you plan to consume it on the same day or maybe the next.

Super nice staff! Selection is a bit limited vs some of the other bakeries in Solvang. Picked up a few items (cookies and pastries) to try out. All were good, not amazing. We have tried three different bakeries in Solvang now, none were amazing. We love Danish Bakeries. I tend to compare them to Schat's in Bishop and Larsen's in Seattle, our family favorites.

After a couple minutes, you begin to feel like this is Home. You may start a little bit quiet, but then the people open up to you and make you feel better. They talk to you, and they give you prompt service. I love their coffee and their pastries. We always buy their buckets of cookies!

    Buckets of their delicious cookies!

Thoughts: I must admit that I'm not a bread person. The only reason I went here is that I had to take some tourists around. Solvang was a pretty obvious stop to make, and we found ourselves in Olsen's. I'm a believer of nailing the simple things, because you won't be able to hide it in fluff. What I liked about Olsen's bread is that they taste home made. The flavors taste exactly like what you asked for, and they don't have those added chemicals that certain establishments use to make the flavors "pop out". The bread was flaky, chewy, and an overall joy to consume. Ambiance: The tables and chairs had a cafe vibe (which is what the place is). It's clean, the bakery smelled great, and the high foot traffic means that the turnaround keeps the food fresh. Service: Straightforward. Pick your bread, ask your questions, and the staff will ring you up after getting what you asked for.

I ordered three items (two…read morecakes and a coffee), but the receipt only listed two, and they weren't even the items I had. I checked the menu and realized the bill was actually for less than I should have paid; it was likely mixed up with the customer sitting next to me, who I remember had ordered a Napoleon. Looking at the prices later, I found the menu quite strange: the Chocolate Eclair is $11.95, while the Napoleon is a dollar less. Anyone who has ever made both will admit that an eclair is much easier to prepare than a Napoleon--in fact, an eclair might be the easiest item in a bakery. It's an interesting pricing choice. This bakery must be very famous; even the AI I used to plan my trip from Pasadena to San Jose recommended it. Since it isn't peak season, I easily found a parking spot on the main street, which was a relief compared to ten years ago when I had to drive in circles to find one. Even in the off-season, there was still a line--not too long, but a line nonetheless. The pastries in the case were all beautifully made and looked delicious. It was difficult to decide, but I eventually chose a Chocolate Eclair and a Danish Waffle. I went with the eclair because it was one of the few Western-style cakes available in my hometown of Shanghai when I was growing up. I've loved them since childhood. Back then, the only other Western desserts we could find were Palmiers, Chestnut Cream Cakes, and cups of whipped cream that you would just eat directly. The eclair tasted excellent, with a texture that was a perfect mix of soft and crispy. The cream was a little oily but still acceptable, and while the whole thing was quite sweet--a bit beyond average--I could still enjoy it. The Danish Waffle looked a bit like a fried Chinese donut, or Youtiao, stuffed with whipped cream, but the outside was actually a light, crispy puff pastry. It was much better than I imagined--crispy without being hard and perfectly baked. The filling was the same cream used in the eclair, combined with raspberry jam. I later realized the Danish Waffle was only $6.25, nearly half the price of the eclair despite being just as good. It's strange that the Chocolate Eclair is the most expensive item in the bakery; it's good, but compared to the Danish Waffle, the price is a bit high. I saw some people complaining that the bakery doesn't have a restroom. When I asked, the staff politely directed me to the nearby park. I accepted the answer, though I can't imagine how they handle the crowds during the busy season. Regardless, this is a five-star experience, no doubt--just be sure to check your bill when you pay. I don't want to pay more than I owe, but I don't want to pay less, either.

Although nowadays spices are much more easier to come by (just drive down to your nearest supermarket!); many spices are still on the scarcer side and represent luxury. Have no fear, though, because you no longer have to board a ship and find the passage to the Middle East but can simply head to the Solvang Spice Merchant. Solvang Spice Merchant is a female-owned (shout out to girl bosses!) spice boutique located in the central hub of the famous Danish tourist city of Solvang near Santa Barbara. Opening its doors a couple years before the Covid pandemic in 2018; Solvang Spice Merchant not only survived but thrived with a brick and mortar storefront and an online shipping option (flat rate of $10 shipping no matter the size of purchase!). The business features hand-crafted spices and seasonings, teas, and foodie gift sets serving both tourists and Solvang residents, alike. My boyfriend and I ventured into the Solvang Spice Merchant when visiting Solvang from Los Angeles for the city's Christmas-time Julefest and gazed our eyes on a shop that would make any King or emperor proud. The store is filled with floor to ceiling shelves of spices/seasoning mixes categorized by country/region and then further sub-categorized by ingredients, styles (BBQ, Pickling, etc) available in various bottle sizes (plus some can be purchased at the counter in bulk, as well). If you can conceive a certain spice or seasoning, trust me that Solvang Spice Merchant has it! Even if you are not in the market for spices; the store is fun to browse and discover all of the spices from around the world. My personal spice journey has endlessly been looking for Garam Masala (an Indian spice) which I could have purchased at the Indian shop by my apartment in Los Angeles - but what fun is that?! It is much better to come across Garam Masala at Solvang Spice Merchant where the spices are combined by hand and with love while enjoying the world of spices! We purchased a 2.3 oz bottle (the smallest) of Garam Masala for $10.25 which isn't cheap: but expected from a boutique spice store. I have since used the spice mix on chicken, Steelhead trout and steamed veggies and it is absolute perfection and makes my apartment smell delightful with its warm spices. The only complaint? None of the two young females behind the counter welcomed us into the store, offered any samples (which I learned the store does indeed do), ask if we needed help, etc. Solvang's main gimmick is being a welcoming tourist city ESPECIALLY during Christmas as it is known as the, "Most Christmas-y City in the Nation". Unfortunately, that Hallmark Christmas movie customer service was absent the night of our visit. Despite this minor qualm; Solvang Spice Merchant is a charming spice shop fit for a King, emperor, sultan or just Averages Joes like you and I visiting Solvang. Not only will you find whatever spice your heart desires but you will have an enjoyable time simply scanning the shelves.
