Stopped at this bakery while on my way home. The bakery was very busy and crowded, which usually means a business is popular. The young female employees were nice and friendly, and a taller one with glasses was very helpful, taking and handing me my order. The variety of pastries on display in the glass cases was extensive, and everything looked delicious. I ordered a guava-filled pastry and a chocolate milk, while my wife had a sugar-free drink. The pastry was just okay, as it was rather hard, but you can never go wrong with chocolate milk. The shelves and display cases were fully stocked, and both the interior and exterior of the business were clean and well-maintained. read more

Stopped by this place for a quick pick me up dessert and coffee. My husband walked in and ordered a guava pastry, chocolate milk, and I ordered a sugar free iced Chai . The cashier that assisted my husband was really nice, welcoming, and courteous. I honestly could not give a name because I forgot to ask. Reason I forgot to ask was because my attention was so focused on another employee (Vivian) who was uncommunicative with everyone, not even really making eye contact with customers she was assisting. Best way to describe her was she had a brusque manner. It was all business, and very short. She was borderline disrespectful in my opinion. If Vivian was having a bad day, which caused her to behave in this manner then she should not be at work, where counter service is priority. The pastry and chai may have tasted much better had Vivian's negative attitude not taken away from my positive experience. read more

I always come here for the bucket of Danish cookies, but they have great sandwiches as well! On this visit, I noticed a friendlier crew working, not the folks noted in older reviews. The cookies are still great, and because I wanted a simple lunch, I ordered my favorite sandwich here, the grilled cheese, with Havarti and Swiss cheeses on Sheepherder's bread, with a dill pickle spear! You can also get a 1/2 sandwich with soup or a 1/2 salad. The sandwich is very tasty, with lots of melty cheese on a grilled, panini-style bread that has real body. If you have not tried Sheepherder bread, this is a good chance. Overall, this bakery is solid for pastries and cookies, but the "deli" is great too, and only available from 10 am to 3 pm, so plan ahead. read more

We stopped in Solvang to stretch our legs and get a few sweets for the rest of our trip. We picked up a few things to enjoy and they were good. There areca lot of Danish bakeries here in this town and they all pretty much offer the same selection. This place though had a better price without sacrificing the product. read more

Birkholm's Bakery and Cafe is another bakery that my family and I checked out while in Solvang! I actually really enjoyed this bakery - I feel like they offered some different items that I did not see elsewhere. They offered Butter Cookies, Tebirkes, Almond Surprises, muffins, different breads and even preserves! I bought a slice of Napoleon and a Blueberry Muffin - both were super good! I love anything with whipped cream and the Napoleon was exactly what I needed - just a massive amount of whipped cream. My daughter also devoured her blueberry muffin! There interior of Birkholm's Bakery and Cafe is actually pretty big - you walk in one side where the bakery is and then the other side is all tables to sit out. Staff were very friendly and helpful! I would absolutely check them out again next time we are visiting Solvang and I would order one of every pastry they offer! Can't wait to come back! read more

I ordered a Raspberry latte and a Cinnamon roll. This place is awful. The latte tasted like medicine. The Cinnamon roll is one of the worst I've had and is not worth the money. I did not finish my items. The Solvang Bakery, a bit down the same street, was much better. read more

First time visiting Solvang, the Denmark old town is so beautiful on Christmas Day. Stopped by this bakery for danish coffee, the taste is pretty light and not sweetened. The chocolate chips cookies is super huge, kinda interesting and I had to grab some of them. It's delicious. Love to go back for another visit. read more

This was my first trip to Solvang and there's just soooo many bakeries! This one had one thing I wanted that the others didn't, a chocolate iced brownie. I knew I wanted it when I saw it. The bakery was clean and bustling. It was amazing to see how many people got themselves into a small space but the staff was all on the move. We were greeted and when it was my turn to order, I asked for my brownie to go and paid. The woman was so kind and asked if I'd like some utensils because it could get pretty messy to eat. I appreciated her warning and thoughtfulness to let me know. The brownie was so moist and the chocolate ganche was perfect. The only thing I didn't like was that there was sugar on the bottom that I didn't know about until I started eating it. It did give it a crunch and many would probably like that, but it made the rich brownie too sweet for me. I ended up just avoiding the very bottom while eating the brownie. I wish I had the stomach space to everything but it's just another reason to come back in the future. read more

I've been to Solvang over 50 times and have never tried this place. There are so many bakeries in this area, I'm overwhelmed most of the time so really haven't tried too many in the area. Given I come here with my family at least twice a year and always stay at Corque Hotel, which is practically next to this place, I had no excuse not to try on my most recent visit. Since most of the bakeries in this area carry similar items, I wasn't sure what this place's specialty is, so I just got 2 Danish - pineapple cream cheese and guava. Both were great but I really loved the pineapple one, because it's not a common flavor for a Danish. Both were quite massive and tasted fresh. read more

Lovely cafe and bakery located in the central part of the city. My personal favorite is the eclair paired with a double cappuccino. This time we tried the Danish waffle, it was too sweet for our liking (both the filling and the outside). We also got another pastry which was soft and delicious (in the photo). This is a great place to try many different kinds of pastries. They also have lunch options and lots of seating. read more

We stopped off in Solvang on our way back north from Santa Barbara and were recommended by a local to try to Birkholm's as a bakery that is truly good and not just touristy. We were really blown away by how good and fresh the danishes were - we tried: guava, strawberry and cheese, pineapple, and raspberry. My favorite was the guava and I would def go back to try the cheese danish. The iced americano from their espresso counter was also decent. Finally, the service was really prompt and friendly and consistent across every employee we interacted with. They were attentive and patient, which you don't often get with busy and crowded bakeries in a tourist hotspot. 5/5! read more

Morning walks are great in Solvang, and Birkholm's Bakery is one of the best parts of waking up in the Danish Capital of America. Enjoy an espresso and a variety of pastries. While several other bakeries are still getting the day started and not yet open, Birkholm's is open at 7am, perfect for early risers. They're dog friendly too! I love the Ham and Havarti croissant. Pro Tip: Get in early if you plan on trying it, they make them in limited quantity. One particular morning I stopped in during a morning walk with my dog. Returned with family around 9:30 and they were already sold out of Ham and Havarti for the day! The bakery offers a decent amount of seating inside as well as outdoor. We grabbed a sandwich during a quick pit stop in Solvang, and enjoyed the back covered patio with our dog. The salami sandwich was carefully made with many layers of thinly sliced veggies, generous amount of salami, and fluffy fresh bread spread evenly with honey mustard. It was a delight! I ordered a latte, and my wife picked two Danish‑style breads, a pastry, and a cinnamon bun. Super nice staff! Selection is a bit limited vs some of the other bakeries in Solvang. Picked up a few items (cookies and pastries) to try out. All were good, not amazing. We have tried three different bakeries in Solvang now, none were amazing. We love Danish Bakeries. I tend to compare them to Schat's in Bishop and Larsen's in Seattle, our family favorites. read more

Thursday, 12-18-2024: We've been here in the past and I have miserably failed to post a review for them. They're a wonderful bakery with an extremely welcoming staff. We've ordered their buckets of cookies to be shipped to our home in the past. This time we went in to purchase their specialty cookies, which were absolutely delicious! They offered a senior discount of 20%! Love seeing their pastries, which is displayed in abundance. This bakery is bright and clean and well laid out. There are tables and chairs outside conducive to people watching while relishing their tasty offerings. Their sandwiches are very good! I've had their veggie sandwich and hubby has had the Black Forest Ham with Swiss Cheese. Their breads are fantastic since they're freshly made on the premises. Came here on a Sunday morning specifically looking for vegan pastries because I read online and on Yelp that they had some vegan boats and other pastries. Was delighted to find that their palm leaf pastry was also vegan. They remind me of elephant ears or palmiers. The boats are basically puff pastry with fruit jelly/custard in the middle and powdered sugar on top. They had raspberry and lemon so I got both. My son is allergic to dairy and eggs so opting for vegan desserts has always been our solution. I also grabbed a cinnamon roll, a croissant, a bear claw, and a bucket of cookies. Out of these non vegan selections, the bucket of cookies were really good and the other things were not as good as the same things from a different bakery. read more

This is our favorite bakery in Solvang. Birkholm's has a wide selection. The inside I much more spacious compared to some of the other bakeries. The women runny the coffee bar area could have been nicer when inquired about paying but I'm glad that Leilani was there to help. I have said it before and I'll say it again, the best Bear Claw in the 805. The cream puff is a must have for me. Cream, custard, chocolate and raspberry make for the perfect oversized dessert. When visit I tend to try something new, still no complaints. read more

This bakery in solvang has an amazing selection of pastries, cookies, candies not to mention their signature sandwiches that melt right in your mouth. We had the ham and cheese. It was the mildest, most tender ham I have ever had on a huge slice of homemade rye bread served with mustard, mayo, red pepper, lettuce, tomato, onion and a pickle on the side. Just delicious and a side note: we shared a sandwich and were both full. They also have chicken and beef sandwiches. The staff is very friendly and dressed very cute in a Danish style. The bakery / restaurant is clean and there are plenty of tables for seating and there's also a few tables outside on the patio. I think it's a must stop in Solvang. read more

Lots of different places to eat. Opted to stop in here, the staff was welcoming, I believe the woman that helped us was Miriam, really friendly. Decided on a pastrami sandwich and the Apple & Blue Salad (had wanted soup but it wasn't ready). Miriam's suggestion on the salad was spot on! The pastrami on squaw was a good size, had split both the salad and sandwich with my brother. Very cute little place more of a coffeehouse feel. read more

We went here because of a local resident's recommendation. The word she used to describe this place was... "Tasty pastries and very inexpensive." A wide selection of baked goods and hot/ice drinks (coffee, tea, etc) to choose from. I got the Danish Waffle and matcha green tea drink. The waffle was very flaky and it had whipped cream and some strawberries inside. Service was very quick and there are two cashiers on each side of the cafe (one for drinks and one for the pastries). This has a bakery/cafe type ambience and I definitely recommend to stop here and get your coffee fix before your long drive out of Solvang. read more

My girlfriend and I had the opportunity to stop by Birkholm's bakery last week while visiting Solvang. This was the first of many bakeries we visited during that visit. The shop itself was fairly simple with a large area for grabbing pastries, and then an extended longer area for seating. There was also outdoor seating, but that seemed to be reserved for larger parties and special. At the shop, we ended up going for a cream puff and something called a princess waffle. The princess waffle was a delight. Texturally it was crunchy with an oat based exterior, and it had some sort of filling which was very delicious. It was also dipped in chocolate, which was a nice touch. The cream puff was OK. While the actual pastry and whipped cream were good the custard that was on the inside was unfortunately a little too eggy for both my girlfriend and I. With that said, we both really enjoyed visiting here and we made sure to stop by to pick up desserts for our family on the way home. Definitely a great way to start our bakery tour of Solvang. read more

Giving this gem of a bakery five stars because of its plentiful gluten-free options! They also are able to grab the gluten-free pastries with a different utensil to make sure there's no cross contamination. This was one of the few, if not only places that had gluten-free pastries in Solvang. Highly recommend, especially if you have celiac. Got up early to stroll the streets of Solvang with no crowds. Walked over to one of the few places open before 8am. Tried the cheese danish and their bear claw. All excellent. Read somewhere that someone else thought it was the best bear claw in all of Solvang. Can't disagree, it was great especially with black coffee. read more

We are a family owner and Operated Bakery for over 60 years. We use the finest ingredients in our pastries, breads and baked goods. We have a full espresso bar using Illy caffe, we offer soy based and almond milk. Come in and set down in our cafe and use the free WiFi.

History

Established in 1951.

Birkholm's Bakery was founded by Carl "Cookie" Sr. and Charlotte Birkholm in 1951. Birkholm's has been a family owned and operated business passed from generation to generation for over 60 years. In 1980, Carl Jr. and Elizabeth Birkholm stepped in to carry on the tradition of baking in Solvang. Carl continues to use the original Danish recipes that "Cookie" brought over from Denmark. In 2011, our son Carl "Thomas" approached us wanting to learn and continue the business like his Grandfather "FarFar" and Father had done before him. Thomas is the 3rd generation of bakers in Solvang and with the Family he is looking forward to a new beginning. Birkholm's Bakery & Cafe is family-owned and operated right here in SOLVANG, CA. Other companies may offer similar services, but our services are the best, and come with a personal touch.

I found myself going back to them until finally giving in to buying a couple to share with family. The type and shape of the buttercookies is slightly different in each box. A small bag is also available. Super-cute, bright, clean and organized. Friendly staff. I'm so glad we finally had a chance to visit.

There were so many pastries to choose from - we had a hard time walking away and not buying one of everything! They had tubs of Danish Butter Cookies and massive Danish Kringles! They also had plenty of seating inside as well! I loved seeing all of the Spring and Easter decorations throughout - it was a very welcoming atmosphere! Although nowadays spices are much more easier to come by (just drive down to your nearest supermarket!); many spices are still on the scarcer side and represent luxury. Have no fear, though, because you no longer have to board a ship and find the passage to the Middle East but can simply head to the Solvang Spice Merchant. Solvang Spice Merchant is a female-owned (shout out to girl bosses!) spice boutique located in the central hub of the famous Danish tourist city of Solvang near Santa Barbara. Opening its doors a couple years before the Covid pandemic in 2018; Solvang Spice Merchant not only survived but thrived with a brick and mortar storefront and an online shipping option (flat rate of $10 shipping no matter the size of purchase!). The business features hand-crafted spices and seasonings, teas, and foodie gift sets serving both tourists and Solvang residents, alike. My boyfriend and I ventured into the Solvang Spice Merchant when visiting Solvang from Los Angeles for the city's Christmas-time Julefest and gazed our eyes on a shop that would make any King or emperor proud. The store is filled with floor to ceiling shelves of spices/seasoning mixes categorized by country/region and then further sub-categorized by ingredients, styles (BBQ, Pickling, etc) available in various bottle sizes (plus some can be purchased at the counter in bulk, as well). If you can conceive a certain spice or seasoning, trust me that Solvang Spice Merchant has it! Even if you are not in the market for spices; the store is fun to browse and discover all of the spices from around the world. My personal spice journey has endlessly been looking for Garam Masala (an Indian spice) which I could have purchased at the Indian shop by my apartment in Los Angeles - but what fun is that?! It is much better to come across Garam Masala at Solvang Spice Merchant where the spices are combined by hand and with love while enjoying the world of spices! We purchased a 2.3 oz bottle (the smallest) of Garam Masala for $10.25 which isn't cheap: but expected from a boutique spice store. I have since used the spice mix on chicken, Steelhead trout and steamed veggies and it is absolute perfection and makes my apartment smell delightful with its warm spices. The only complaint? None of the two young females behind the counter welcomed us into the store, offered any samples (which I learned the store does indeed do), ask if we needed help, etc. Solvang's main gimmick is being a welcoming tourist city ESPECIALLY during Christmas as it is known as the, "Most Christmas-y City in the Nation". Unfortunately, that Hallmark Christmas movie customer service was absent the night of our visit. Despite this minor qualm; Solvang Spice Merchant is a charming spice shop fit for a King, emperor, sultan or just Averages Joes like you and I visiting Solvang. Not only will you find whatever spice your heart desires but you will have an enjoyable time simply scanning the shelves.

Before I did, I bought 2 packs of their Danish Haribo gummies that I had never seen or heard of before - we brought them back for a friend of ours who loves Haribo! I also noticed their massive glass counter display of Danish pastries - they looked amazing! We didn't buy anything from them since I was in a hurry to get outside, but man...did they look tasty! I did notice that they had a nice seating area in the back to enjoy your items - that is, if you can stand the heat. Staff at the counter and register were super friendly! Whether you're sipping wine inside or strolling through the grounds, the scenery alone makes this place worth a visit. Speaking of wine, the selection here is top-notch. We tried the Signature tastings and ended up leaving with 3 bottles. Every glass was a delight and Scherina was so kind and knowledgeable. The wine is clearly crafted with care, and the staff is more than happy to help you find the perfect pairing to suit your tastes. But what really took this experience to the next level was the food! The lobster roll was out of this world, fresh, flavorful, and packed with lobster that had just the right amount of seasoning. If you're in the mood for something a bit more casual, the smash burger is a must-try. It's juicy, perfectly cooked, and served with a side and a side of chips. It went well with a red blend. Recs: Walnut Fudge - Maple Pecan - is a bit overtly sweet in my opinion, but it becomes less overwhelming as I eat it - still quite good. But that Walnut fudge - I can't describe it but my man who doesn't really care for sweets/chocolate/fudge/brownies closed his eyes while he was eating because it was so good.
