Not at all surprise that Grains and Grounds is a place I'm going to rave about! It's truly one of my favorite bakery stop in Santa Ynez. This little bakery is located inside Chumash Casino and I get more excited about this pastry shop than the actual resort. Not only are the desserts aesthetically pleasing, they are simply WOW! A different array of desserts are presented each month depending on season or special events. And don't forget about their in house made Gelato Bar. Yummy! Personal favorites are the cake pops and specialty cakes. The cake pops are dangerously delicious and the art, along with the distinctive flavors in their cakes are just astounding. Need something a little bit more filling? Grains and Grounds also serves fresh, pre-packaged salads and inviting sandwiches. A healthier fare that will tie you down until your next meal. Craving Starbucks? This shop also has you covered with some of your favorite Starbucks coffees and drinks. Masks are required for service and social distancing is enforced. Enjoy and please be safe always.

It's a bummer when you lose $ at the casino AGAIN!! Ugh! I was disappointed, but I saw something sweet that can make me feel better. A chocolate cake!! Chocolate marquise ($3.99): chocolate cake, layered with mousse, very thin fudge, topped with sugary chocolate icing and a dark cherry on top. I could really taste the chocolate and it wasn't too sweet. Non chocolate lover would even eat this cake. Starbucks coffee is also available at the bakery. Super friendly and helpful workers. QUCK TIP: IT IS LOCATED AT CHUMASH CASINO, NEAR THE ENTRANCE. 4 stars!! Sweet Stop Cafe is yummylicious!!

Inside was equally charming, and the menu more extensive than we imagined, including some vegetarian options. Three vegan chorizo breakfast burritos and one Farmer's Market Roasted Veggie Tartine were ordered. The burritos were more expensive than we are used to from other places we've eaten ($19.00 each), but my husband, who grew up eating non-vegetarian chorizo, insists that this was the best vegan chorizo that he has ever had - it was spicy, oily, and delicious! The kids agreed that their burritos were well-made. My tartine was also delicious and well-made, with quality, fresh ingredients, including the salad greens on the side to absorb the balsamic vinegar. Oh, and we also shared a thick slice of their carrot cake, which was moist, well-spiced, and generous with icing! The staff was very friendly, and it should be noted that we came in at 1:00 and they generously said "we can do breakfast" when we asked about the burritos. :-) Overall, I know that we'll be back again, definitely to try out more of that carrot cake and some of their other pastries!

Thoughts: I must admit that I'm not a bread person. The only reason I went here is that I had to take some tourists around. Solvang was a pretty obvious stop to make, and we found ourselves in Olsen's. I'm a believer of nailing the simple things, because you won't be able to hide it in fluff. What I liked about Olsen's bread is that they taste home made. The flavors taste exactly like what you asked for, and they don't have those added chemicals that certain establishments use to make the flavors "pop out". The bread was flaky, chewy, and an overall joy to consume. Ambiance: The tables and chairs had a cafe vibe (which is what the place is). It's clean, the bakery smelled great, and the high foot traffic means that the turnaround keeps the food fresh. Service: Straightforward. Pick your bread, ask your questions, and the staff will ring you up after getting what you asked for.

Today was a perfectly slow day that we found ourselves the only customers in the late afternoon. We were able to take our time browsing every shelf and display. The gingerbread houses were amazing. I found myself going back to them until finally giving in to buying a couple to share with family. The type and shape of the buttercookies is slightly different in each box. Take a look at my photos first--the cake and the bill just didn't match. I ordered three items (two…read morecakes and a coffee), but the receipt only listed two, and they weren't even the items I had. I checked the menu and realized the bill was actually for less than I should have paid; it was likely mixed up with the customer sitting next to me, who I remember had ordered a Napoleon. Looking at the prices later, I found the menu quite strange: the Chocolate Eclair is $11.95, while the Napoleon is a dollar less. Anyone who has ever made both will admit that an eclair is much easier to prepare than a Napoleon--in fact, an eclair might be the easiest item in a bakery. It's an interesting pricing choice. This bakery must be very famous; even the AI I used to plan my trip from Pasadena to San Jose recommended it. Since it isn't peak season, I easily found a parking spot on the main street, which was a relief compared to ten years ago when I had to drive in circles to find one. Even in the off-season, there was still a line--not too long, but a line nonetheless. The pastries in the case were all beautifully made and looked delicious. It was difficult to decide, but I eventually chose a Chocolate Eclair and a Danish Waffle. I went with the eclair because it was one of the few Western-style cakes available in my hometown of Shanghai when I was growing up. I've loved them since childhood. Back then, the only other Western desserts we could find were Palmiers, Chestnut Cream Cakes, and cups of whipped cream that you would just eat directly. The eclair tasted excellent, with a texture that was a perfect mix of soft and crispy. The cream was a little oily but still acceptable, and while the whole thing was quite sweet--a bit beyond average--I could still enjoy it. The Danish Waffle looked a bit like a fried Chinese donut, or Youtiao, stuffed with whipped cream, but the outside was actually a light, crispy puff pastry. It was much better than I imagined--crispy without being hard and perfectly baked. The filling was the same cream used in the eclair, combined with raspberry jam. I later realized the Danish Waffle was only $6.25, nearly half the price of the eclair despite being just as good. It's strange that the Chocolate Eclair is the most expensive item in the bakery; it's good, but compared to the Danish Waffle, the price is a bit high. I saw some people complaining that the bakery doesn't have a restroom. When I asked, the staff politely directed me to the nearby park. I accepted the answer, though I can't imagine how they handle the crowds during the busy season. Regardless, this is a five-star experience, no doubt--just be sure to check your bill when you pay. I don't want to pay more than I owe, but I don't want to pay less, either.
