Mortensen's is a landmark in Solvang, the building is huge and they even have nice lawn area where you can sit and enjoy your treats! We ordered an assortment of cookies, an Almond Croissant, Cheese Danish and a Pistachio Bar. There were so many pastries to choose from - we had a hard time walking away and not buying one of everything! They had tubs of Danish Butter Cookies and massive Danish Kringles! They also had plenty of seating inside as well! I loved seeing all of the Spring and Easter decorations throughout - it was a very welcoming atmosphere! Take a look at my photos first--the cake and the bill just didn't match. I ordered three items (two cakes and a coffee), but the receipt only listed two, and they weren't even the items I had. I checked the menu and realized the bill was actually for less than I should have paid; it was likely mixed up with the customer sitting next to me, who I remember had ordered a Napoleon. Looking at the prices later, I found the menu quite strange: the Chocolate Eclair is $11.95, while the Napoleon is a dollar less. Anyone who has ever made both will admit that an eclair is much easier to prepare than a Napoleon--in fact, an eclair might be the easiest item in a bakery. It's an interesting pricing choice. This bakery must be very famous; even the AI I used to plan my trip from Pasadena to San Jose recommended it. Since it isn't peak season, I easily found a parking spot on the main street, which was a relief compared to ten years ago when I had to drive in circles to find one. Even in the off-season, there was still a line--not too long, but a line nonetheless. The pastries in the case were all beautifully made and looked delicious. It was difficult to decide, but I eventually chose a Chocolate Eclair and a Danish Waffle. I went with the eclair because it was one of the few Western-style cakes available in my hometown of Shanghai when I was growing up. I've loved them since childhood. Back then, the only other Western desserts we could find were Palmiers, Chestnut Cream Cakes, and cups of whipped cream that you would just eat directly. The eclair tasted excellent, with a texture that was a perfect mix of soft and crispy. The cream was a little oily but still acceptable, and while the whole thing was quite sweet--a bit beyond average--I could still enjoy it. The Danish Waffle looked a bit like a fried Chinese donut, or Youtiao, stuffed with whipped cream, but the outside was actually a light, crispy puff pastry. It was much better than I imagined--crispy without being hard and perfectly baked. The filling was the same cream used in the eclair, combined with raspberry jam. I later realized the Danish Waffle was only $6.25, nearly half the price of the eclair despite being just as good. It's strange that the Chocolate Eclair is the most expensive item in the bakery; it's good, but compared to the Danish Waffle, the price is a bit high. I saw some people complaining that the bakery doesn't have a restroom. When I asked, the staff politely directed me to the nearby park. I accepted the answer, though I can't imagine how they handle the crowds during the busy season. Regardless, this is a five-star experience, no doubt--just be sure to check your bill when you pay. I don't want to pay more than I owe, but I don't want to pay less, either. read more

Mmm! There's one delight after another here! I felt we used great restraint as we chose just one item for each of us. My hubs chose a turnover for later while I got the almond bear claw, which certainly wasn't going to make it past the end of the street! The outside had a satisfyingly slight crunch as I bit through the sugar and almonds on top. In short, easy to find and delicious traditional Danish pastries! This place is right on the main road and is easy to find. During busy weekends, expect the line to run out the door, but don't worry - it moves fast. They had a wide assortment of pastries to choose from. I tried the Danish waffle and my +1 got a cheese danish. Both were good, but the waffle really stood out! The bread was impossibly flaky (in the best way) and delicate, sole being string enough to hold the berry filling. A cup of black coffee for my +1 and an Americano for me helped balance the sweetness. We decided to visit again the next day, on our way out of town. The danish waffles are easily the sweetest desserts I've ever had as the puff pastries are coated in sugar and filled inside with sweetened whipped cream and raspberry jam but in the best way possible. Eating one danish is enough to keep you wired and alert the entire day. The other pastry that has been a hit or miss with my family is the pistachio bar enrobed partially in chocolate. Some feedback I've heard is that it's artificial tasting but I think it has more of a marzipan flavor so that can be off putting to some. It can get busy here so I recommend to come early if you can or during off times but be warned that they can run out of some pastries. I would know firsthand since we came here one time around 2:00PM-3:00PM in the afternoon and they were all out of danish waffles. read more

Have been to Solvang many times, but have never been to this bakery before. It's a pretty decent sized bakery, with a good amount of seating on one side. Since we were in Solvang, of course we needed to get danishes. I got the cream cheese danish, and the lemon curd danish. You go down the line and let the staff know what you like, and they'll put it from the display case. I want to say the danishes were about $5 each, so for two it was about $11. It wasn't super busy when we went in the early morning, but I can see it getting really crowded and cramped if it does get busy in there. We took our danish, and sat over by the town square area, and enjoyed it while people watching. My favorite was probably the cream cheese one. The sweet and savoriness of it really got me, and I must've chomped that one down! The lemon curd one was also good, and I'd say is my second favorite to the cream cheese. read more

Mortensen's danish bakery has some of the better danishes in town. We arrived on a Tuesday afternoon. The bakery is located right in the heart of Solvang off the Hwy 246. Parking is accessible in the nearby free parking lots and street parking. Once inside, it is bright, spacious, and inviting. Can't recall that I'd ever been to Mortensen's before. The friendliness of the young woman behind the counter alone would bring me back. She was wonderful about knowing the qualities of the large array of pastries. She made suggestions about what would most likely please our young granddaughter. For me, I don't usually order a fruit pastry when I visit a bakery like this one. The cherry Danish looked too amazing to pass up, so that will be a main highlight of breakfast tomorrow morning, along with coffee. Delicious pastry spot in none other than Solvang! We try to stop by here anytime we come to the city. They offer a lot of pastries and cookies. My girls got these cute little cream shells that were filled to the brim. I always get the pistachio pastry and but it didn't taste like pistachio but more like vanilla this time. Knocking a star off for that. It can get busy but the staff are very friendly and efficient in moving the line along. There's seating inside but outside is more picturesque. Yummy whipped cream filling with strawberries was a winner for my toddler, he gobbled up the piece I gave him. We also got the blueberry danish and an almond croissant.
