Mortensen's is a landmark in Solvang, the building is huge and they even have nice lawn area where you can sit and enjoy your treats! We ordered an assortment of cookies, an Almond Croissant, Cheese Danish and a Pistachio Bar. There were so many pastries to choose from - we had a hard time walking away and not buying one of everything! They had tubs of Danish Butter Cookies and massive Danish Kringles! They also had plenty of seating inside as well! I loved seeing all of the Spring and Easter decorations throughout - it was a very welcoming atmosphere! As the others, my mom (Hispanic) went to go take a look as well, and stood in line patiently while other familes ordered. One of the managers (very tall white lady with blonde hair) started asking my mom in a very annoyed manner "Are you ready to order or what?" and my mom had said "Oh not yet im just looking at the moment," but some how that didn't register with this worker, as she look at her other associate and rolled her eyes, side eyeing my mom. They were unprofessional with how they treated customers, more importantly my mom, and didn't have any patience for those who were viewing the menu. Take a look at my photos first--the cake and the bill just didn't match. I ordered three items (two cakes and a coffee), but the receipt only listed two, and they weren't even the items I had. I checked the menu and realized the bill was actually for less than I should have paid; it was likely mixed up with the customer sitting next to me, who I remember had ordered a Napoleon. Looking at the prices later, I found the menu quite strange: the Chocolate Eclair is $11.95, while the Napoleon is a dollar less. Anyone who has ever made both will admit that an eclair is much easier to prepare than a Napoleon--in fact, an eclair might be the easiest item in a bakery. It's an interesting pricing choice. This bakery must be very famous; even the AI I used to plan my trip from Pasadena to San Jose recommended it. Since it isn't peak season, I easily found a parking spot on the main street, which was a relief compared to ten years ago when I had to drive in circles to find one. Even in the off-season, there was still a line--not too long, but a line nonetheless. The pastries in the case were all beautifully made and looked delicious. It was difficult to decide, but I eventually chose a Chocolate Eclair and a Danish Waffle. I went with the eclair because it was one of the few Western-style cakes available in my hometown of Shanghai when I was growing up. I've loved them since childhood. Back then, the only other Western desserts we could find were Palmiers, Chestnut Cream Cakes, and cups of whipped cream that you would just eat directly. The eclair tasted excellent, with a texture that was a perfect mix of soft and crispy. The cream was a little oily but still acceptable, and while the whole thing was quite sweet--a bit beyond average--I could still enjoy it. The Danish Waffle looked a bit like a fried Chinese donut, or Youtiao, stuffed with whipped cream, but the outside was actually a light, crispy puff pastry. It was much better than I imagined--crispy without being hard and perfectly baked. The filling was the same cream used in the eclair, combined with raspberry jam. I later realized the Danish Waffle was only $6.25, nearly half the price of the eclair despite being just as good. It's strange that the Chocolate Eclair is the most expensive item in the bakery; it's good, but compared to the Danish Waffle, the price is a bit high. I saw some people complaining that the bakery doesn't have a restroom. When I asked, the staff politely directed me to the nearby park. I accepted the answer, though I can't imagine how they handle the crowds during the busy season. Regardless, this is a five-star experience, no doubt--just be sure to check your bill when you pay. I found a piece of plastic inside an apple pastry I ordered here. Even if it wasn't plastic or something else, the fact that there was a hard, unchewable foreign object in an apple pastry is completely unacceptable and makes no sense. I brought it to a staff member expecting at least an apology or some concern. Instead, they dropped the piece, insisted that it wasn't plastic, and then asked me with an annoyed expression, "Do you want your money back?" I then went back to my table and sat down, and a woman who seemed like the owner came over with the money. She forcefully placed it on my table without saying anything properly, which honestly made me feel even worse and more disrespected. I was honestly shocked by the way the situation was handled. Finding a foreign object in food is concerning enough, but the lack of apology or concern, along with how the refund was handled, made the experience even worse. My hubs chose a turnover for later while I got the almond bear claw, which certainly wasn't going to make it past the end of the street! Normally always a line during the weekend so be prepare to wait. But come midweek, you should be ok. Right when you walk in, the sweet fresh smell of baked goods. The danishes are one that's not to be missed. Their raspberry danishes, chefs kiss. Not only danishes, the strudels, crème puffs, eclairs and all their amazing creations. Solvang is such an amazing town. We try to stop by whenever we are in the area. I am a big fan of the architecture and the food especially the pastries. Mortensen's danish bakery has some of the better danishes in town. We arrived on a Tuesday afternoon. The bakery is located right in the heart of Solvang off the Hwy 246. Parking is accessible in the nearby free parking lots and street parking. Once inside, it is bright, spacious, and inviting. The large window case display of pasties, danishes, cookies and other goodies looks so appetizing. We ordered the cream cheese danish, raspberry danish, bear claw, and a few cookies. The danishes were delicious, buttery, and flaky. Their creamy filling was sweet and delectable. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Mortensen's Danish Bakery. While waiting for a table at a nearby restaurant, we stopped in to Mortensen's Bakery. I must confess that we normally go to a different Danish bakery on the other end of town. Can't recall that I'd ever been to Mortensen's before. The friendliness of the young woman behind the counter alone would bring me back. She was wonderful about knowing the qualities of the large array of pastries. She made suggestions about what would most likely please our young granddaughter. For me, I don't usually order a fruit pastry when I visit a bakery like this one. The cherry Danish looked too amazing to pass up, so that will be a main highlight of breakfast tomorrow morning, along with coffee. They bake all their pastries at that location, so they must be very fresh. The interior of the shop has tables to sit and enjoy the baked goods. It's somewhat dated and could use some freshening and accessorizing. The main event is definitely what's in the bakery display cases. The danish waffles are easily the sweetest desserts I've ever had as the puff pastries are coated in sugar and filled inside with sweetened whipped cream and raspberry jam but in the best way possible. Eating one danish is enough to keep you wired and alert the entire day. The other pastry that has been a hit or miss with my family is the pistachio bar enrobed partially in chocolate. Some feedback I've heard is that it's artificial tasting but I think it has more of a marzipan flavor so that can be off putting to some. It can get busy here so I recommend to come early if you can or during off times but be warned that they can run out of some pastries. I would know firsthand since we came here one time around 2:00PM-3:00PM in the afternoon and they were all out of danish waffles. read more

My girls got these cute little cream shells that were filled to the brim. I always get the pistachio pastry and but it didn't taste like pistachio but more like vanilla this time. Every visit you can expect a line but with all of the fantastic women working the shop they really have a process down to keep things moving. They are also amazing and helpful, I had wanted more danish waffles then they had on the case, and made me some fresh as I waited!
