I've been on a hainan chicken binge lately and this must have been my favorite of the 3 places I've tried! Placed my order on their website and everything was easy peasy! -hainan chicken: Got both white and dark meat and they were both flavorful and juicy. I enjoyed their green onion ginger sauce with it very much. -fried hainan chicken: This was okay, not sure I'd order this again. The packaging also wasn't great. The chicken was stacked on top of each other so the bottom piece was soggy by the time I got home. -chicken rice: This was my least favorite chicken rice of the 3 places I tried. The rice grains were bigger? Reminded me more of brown rice than white rice. It also reminded me of the rice they serve at Tokyo Fried Chicken. They seemed to be following covid guidelines well and have a table near the entrance, that allows 1 person in and your food packed and ready to go on tables inside the restaurant. read more

I'll start by saying that the Hainan chicken here is fantastic. I've been ordering a Combo B basically every 2 weeks for the past 6 months. But, I'm going to find somewhere else to go now-- here's why. The service here is horrendous. The cashiers are not friendly and NEVER follow through with special requests. It feels like they want to shoo you away as fast as possible. For example, they are very stingy with their sweet soy sauce, which is a MUST-have along with their chili sauce and ginger sauce. There have been multiple times when I've called in to request this sauce for my to-go order or I'll ask for extra while picking up my order--- and the cashier has told me "Yes, the extra sauce is in the bag". Only for me to discover once I got home that they lied--- no sweet soy sauce at all! It's honestly super frustrating. I'm completely willing to pay more if they want..... Karen and I were in the area as we had an event to go to later in the day. Luckily enough Pasadena is part of the San Gabriel Valley - a mecca for Chinese food in America. The region's so well known for the many regional variations of Chinese cuisine that simply asking for "Chinese food" just won't do. To make your search a bit easier, you would need suggestions from locals or have a specific dish/cultural focus in mind (or both). In this particular instance I had a desire to finally try "Hainan chicken" (Hainanese chicken rice), one of the national dishes of Singapore and nowhere to be found in any restaurant in San Diego. A quick Google search will reveal Savoy Kitchen as the premier example for Hainan chicken. Unfortunately as we were nowhere near Alhambra we settled for this restaurant, still located within Pasadena. Due to the ongoing pandemic we had our orders to-go while consuming the chicken at a nearby park. I initially placed an order online. There was a glitch in the system so I was unable to complete the order - I had to place the order over the phone. Food was ready within 10 minutes of order. Karen and I had the Combo A ($22.99), which feeds 2-3 people and consists of the following: - 1 half chicken (dark/white meat only option or a combination of both) - 1 spicy cucumber salad - 1 order of fried peanuts - 2 portions of chicken rice - 2 cups of chicken soup - Comes with tangy red chili sauce and ground ginger scallion paste My enjoyment of the dish is due to how much flavor can be packed into what is a simple dish. The chicken broth makes the chicken stand out and what flavors the rice. There is also a synergy that comes with eating the chicken, rice, broth and veggies sequentially (not simultaneously lol) that makes eating said chicken an experience more than just the sum of its parts. I had leftover chicken and rice the next day (Karen took the salad and peanuts) and while the chicken and rice was still good (Karen had a cooler), the overall experience felt like it was missing something. I think I have eaten the healthiest chicken dish ever! My friends, girlfriend, and I went here to grab an early dinner. From the ambiance, it looks like a regular Chinese restaurant. I really thought its one of those orange chicken type of food place, but mann I was wrong; their food speaks to itself! The servers are polite, but my friend which is Chinese told us to agressively order because that's how it is on that part of the world lol. Fortunately, we didn't have to order like that, so their customers service is pretty good :) Anyway.. lets go to the chicken :) Their food were from the province of Hunan (yeah I googled it). My girlfriend ordered their fried chicken, which is good and taste like a non-oily chicken karage, which feels healthy. They served it with their delicious fried rice. Their fried rice is amazing because they put chicken broth in it while frying it. So you can taste chicken all over the whole dish :) She ordered their coconut juice in its shell, too to clean up the taste, which compliments the chicken flavor. I on the other hand, ordered their dark meat steam Hunan style chicken. It is the #7 dish! Their chicken is nice and fresh and you can taste the difference in the quality and texture of the meat. Plenty of chicken and balances out their higher price. We ordered online through their website which sends you text alerts when your food is ready. Then you can pay online vs at the front of the store at pickup. The food was great! We got the combo A which feeds two people for $23. It comes with a half chicken, fried peanuts, cucumber salad, two bowls of chicken rice, and two cups of chicken broth. Everything was delicious. I'll be honest, I still need to try a few other Hainan chicken places, but in terms of the food, this is the real deal. I ate here earlier in the evening and it's 1am and I'm craving it. I knew I should have ordered another to go. I live in Noho, and thinking about when I have time this week to drive back there. It's a hole in the wall. Plastic decorations. Not a lot of tables. I was only there 20 mins or so (food comes out fast) and I saw a lot of foot traffic. I imagine somedays, it's crazy packed. The way the servers were rushing around even when it wasn't crazy busy, let me know they get really busy sometimes, so super saiyan mode is the natural setting. Got the dark meat per the server's rec. It wasn't really your average looking dark meat. It was so good. Pour plenty of that sweet soy on it. Without, it's not the same. The ginger and carrot puree were nice touches to cut the sweetness and broth and add some citrus and vinegar. It was like 95% Chinese people there. In the middle of Pasadena. That says something. Also the short time I was there I saw the servers do a ton of togo orders and food app orders and lots of phone calls. Give them a break ok? Your take-out order and def your postmates falls at the bottom of the list of how a restaurant prioritizes. They want people to come in. Duhhhh. So all these negative reviews on togos can sod off. My rating pretty much says it all. I've bad opportunities to review before but by the time I get to it, I can't get a photo in because my kids are all the food! That in itself should tell you how good their food is. Their Hainan style chicken is always tender and done just right. The scallion ginger sauce and sweet soy sauce that you pair with the tender goodness is just the right measure of flavor to add to your dish. Served with chicken rice, rice cooked in the chicken broth, it's a wonder my plate stayed full, instead it made its way to my belly! We often order the whole chicken, sometimes two because with teenagers you have to have more than one size serving. My daughter likes their steamed buns served with condensed milk, which brings me back to my childhood in Manila when my nan would serve hot pan de sal with condensed milk. Yum!!! They also have a fried chicken hainan style, cooked so nicely that it retains the tenderness of the meat and keeps the meat still flavorful. This one we like with their slightly kicky red scallion ginger sauce. Since the health crisis they only take pick up orders, you can do this via their website so you can order through them directly. LOVE this place, it is so much more convenient to us West side folk than making our way into deep SGV to Savoy and such. Portions are generous, food tastes home cooked, and a really great value on their family meals. I LOVE their chicken rice, string beans, and sauces. Their online ordering portal makes pick up a breeze though there is usually only 1 cashier so there can be a line just to pick up. Wow! This place is awesome! I finally found a good hainan chicken place to go. However, this is a bit far for me since I live in Rosemead. A small hole in the wall located a block away from PCC. I got my dish to go. Affordable and very tasty hainan chicken. I ordered the original hainan chicken rice and the meat was very fresh! The rice is very flavorful every bite. The meat was moist, even the breast part. The staff is friendly and I was able to order ahead and pick up. The rice is a hair dry and not as moist as I'd like it to be, and the soup that comes along isn't as hot as I'd like it to be. The chicken is very very tender, even the white meat and I was extremely impressed with that. So juicy and tender, it was delightful. I'd suggest getting the chicken over rice because it is clearly their trademark dish. The sauces that tag along are also great pairings with the chicken, and don't forget to pour some sweet soy sauce along with it. I tried their milk pudding however, and it was not good. Even though they specialize in Hainan chicken I felt that the food was just so-so. It does come with soup on the side which was delicious. It's great for if you have a crazing and no where close to Savoy or Side Chick where the dish is done much better. The service is good, came into order take out, they were fast, and offered me a seat and some water while I waited. The ambience is clean a and fresh looking. There's a full restaurant has about 25 tables or so. There's plenty of street parking. I was able just to pull up and park with no problems. We shared the whole chicken (dark meat) between 4 people (and ordered an extra portion of rice), and it was the perfect portion size. My friends also mentioned the fried chicken is great too. I also enjoyed their chicken broth, which is just liquid, but it's a hot and flavorful broth that is a nice precursor to the main course. Good food and great service! The waiters were kind enough to bring us waters when we were waiting for a table and were attentive to give us refills as needed. My main quip is that the sauces are only average. I'm glad that there's a pretty authentic Hainan chicken shop in Pasadena now that can give Savoy a run for its money. With all the positive feedback that I was seeing about Cluck2Go, my friends and I came with high expectations. Honestly, I don't think there was anything all that amazing about this place - food is pretty good, but we weren't wowed by what we tried. I wanted to try their signature Hainan Chicken rice dish, but all of my friends ended up ordering it. I ended up going with the Chicken Tom Yum Soup with rice noodle for $9.50 instead. Hearing the words "Tom Yum Soup", I expected the soup to be tangy and a little spicy, but Cluck2Go's soup was not acidic at all. My friends all tried the soup and said that it tasted flowery - I could taste the floral hints of the soup and felt that it was sweeter than expected. I liked the rice noodles, chicken pieces, and vegetables that were in the soup, but I have had better Tom Yum Soup in the middle of nowhere than at Cluck2Go. The chicken pieces were soft and tender - and with the complimentary sauces, tasted pretty good. I just wasn't a fan of the Tom Yum soup, which should have been the star of the dish. The Hainan Chicken rice with dark meat ($9.95 - one dollar more than the regular white meat) came with flavored rice, a bowl of chicken soup, and three additional sauces (sweet soy sauce, scallion paste, and a chili sauce). We all agreed that the broth was too oily although the chicken soup did taste pretty flavorful. Rice was good and had flavor from the chicken broth, and the chicken was juicy and tender. I liked all three of the sauces, but the sweet soy sauce was my favorite. The pickled vegetables were a great addition to add some tanginess to the dish. A lot of people mentioned that the portions were really big, but I actually thought the portion was just right for the rice dish. Portions seem to be much bigger at Tasty Food. Since my friends were the ones who ate the Hainan Chicken rice, I asked them what they thought of it - they liked it, but still all agreed that they have had better Hainan chicken elsewhere. Workers are friendly, but since this is a fast-food ordering type of restaurant, you pretty much serve yourself after you order. Restaurant is on the smaller side - located on Colorado across from PCC. There was a good amount of customers coming in and out the night that we visited. tl;dr - I thought Cluck2Go was just okay - I was disappointed in my Tom Yum Chicken bowl, but I can see why people like the Hainan Chicken rice dish. The sauces are a nice touch, both have a ginger flavor and the red one is like a tart spice chili? The one thing about here is that they have the sweet soy sauce which I like to balance the spiciness from the ginger. For the money, cluck2go is way better value than savoy. As someone who grew up eating Hainanese Chicken (the mother is from Singapore), Cluck2Go hits all the key requirements for a good chicken dish. The skin remains firm and intact, the white meat is moist, and good God the rice! Their chicken rice here is flavorful, not too oily, and cooked to just the right consistency! Parking: Street parking next to a thrift store. Order ahead of time. There isn't much of a waiting area other than outside in the sun. A bit annoying that they don't call you when your order is ready so you have to check up on it from time to time. TLDR: Chicken and rice is better than Savoy. Savoy's sauce is better. Regular Hainan chicken: I got the mixed white and dark meat chicken to try both. The chicken was juicy and tender and you get good amount of chicken which is a plus. Compared to Savoy, I would say the chicken at Cluck2Go is better and you get more chicken. The rice was a ginger/green onion infused riced. It looked like brown rice but it is the seasoning that probably changed its color. You get very little rice but compared to Savoy but the rice is much more fragrant than Savoy. The sauces were a green onion with some ginger mixed in and a spicy sauce. Compare to Savoy, I still prefer savoy's spicy sauce and their ginger sauce with green onions. The green onion sauce was interesting but it needs the ginger to give it that spice and the spicy sauce was missing that umami that Savoy's spicy sauce has. Crispy Hainan Chicken: It feels like you get less chicken since the box is smaller. I recommend eating it right away since the box will create condensation. Finally a restaurant that serves something pretty close to something one would find in Singapore!! Had been hearing good things about Cluck2Go but waited a while before finally checking it out as most others were disappointing at best. Having growing up eating Savoy and seeing how their quality has diminished over the past few years, we found ourselves searching for a place to fill the void. Parking was pretty straight forward as there is a ton of street parking and even a small lot behind the building. As others have mentioned, the seating area is fairly small so don't show up with a large party. As for the chicken and rice, to me the flavor of the rice is the most important part of the meal. It has to be fragrant and actually have some flavor, which they have nailed. The chicken was tender and moist which takes a back seat to the rice for me. Sauces were pretty traditional with the exception of the hot sauce which they already mix in some ginger (for those that want heat, this will be disappointing for you) which was perfect as I usually mix the two together. Priced in line with Savoy's menu however, the portions seemed bigger here and you get an added soup to go along with your meal. We'd been going to Cluck2Go in Pasadena for a number of years and have been singing their praises to anyone and everyone who will hear it for the longest time. This is our one and only spot for hainan chicken, even after years of having been regulars at some other notable spots in the SGV. Before the pandemic, we dined in and ordered a dark-meat plate per person, which comes with chicken, rice, chicken soup, and pickled vegetables. We'd sometimes share a half-chicken instead. During the pandemic, our appetites somehow increased and have since remained, and we now order a whopping Combo B, which feeds 2x the number of people (4-5) than we actually are (2.5). But we love the combo since it comes with string beans, soup, peanuts, and cucumber salad as well. Cluck2Go's chicken is consistently delicious and tender, and their takeout and dine in service is efficient. We usually order online. They also resumed their dine-in service a while back, so that's also an option now. read more

I've been craving some hainan chicken, and I'm so happy to have found this place so I don't have to drive all the way to the 626. I got the hainan chicken rice with dark meat. The rice is super flavorful, but not too salty or greasy. The chicken itself didn't have much flavor, but the rice came with an assortment of condiments such as sweet chili sauce and soy sauce upon request. It also came with a small bowl of chicken soup, which it's super tasty as well. I recommend ordering ahead on their website, as it did get quite busy around dinner time. I'm big fan of hanan chicken so I was super exited when this place recently opened in Pasadena. Now if you're unfamiliar with hanan chicken or have been living under a rock though all these years eating mainly crickets and worms, It's basically poached chicken served atop a bed of fragrant rice that's been cooked in its juices. The name "Cluck2Go" suggest pick-up and go kind atmopshere, but they do offer sit down dining, limited to small handful of seats. Parking is street only. I ordered half hanan chicken (dark meat $14), chicken was perfectly tender and juicy. The rice was simply heaven in bowl, so super most. The meal comes with small bowl chicken broth and pickled vegetables, plus your typical accoutrements of garlic/ginger and sweet chile sauce (soy sauce and sriracha bottle available on hand). All to enhance your eating pleasure. The only thing you would come here for is hanan chicken which is definitely on point, including flavorful rice. The perfect comfort food, healthier option to fried chicken - another weakness of mine. Lately, I been trying to minimize my intake of carbs, but coming here surely doesn't help. I love Hainan Chicken and am happy to see a new restaurant that sells it open near me! This shop is located in Pasadena, a city where you wouldn't normally find any restaurant that sells Hainan Chicken. So, there's a lot of value opening up shop here. PARKING + AMBIENCE I parked on the nearby street, Colorado Blvd is a busy street, but the nearby side street leads to a neighborhood with plenty of parking. The small shop has a couple of tables, perfect for parties of two to five. There was plenty of people dining when I came during a weekend lunch hour, a good sign for an up and coming restaurant! FOOD I got the Hainan Chicken Rice ($8.95), +$1 if you want dark meat. The plate comes with complimentary chicken broth and two sauces filled with ginger. The quality of the chicken was excellent, it was tender and the chicken pieces were all full of meat. They provided a solid portion of chicken and rice. I also enjoyed the two sauces very much, they both added a desirable flavor to the meal. SERVICE We were greeted by the daughter of the owner, who took our order at the front. She was super friendly and happy to see that we found out about them through Yelp. CONCLUSION This might be my favorite place for Hainan Chicken that I have eaten recently. It is absolutely comparable to Savory and might even be better since Savory's quality has been going down as of late. They're a mom and pop shop so they are cordial and value your support greatly.
