I hate to say this. Because, I've always had a great experience at church key. However, the Bartender tonight never bothered to acknowledge me at the bar, offer me a cocktail, or even say hello. After 10 minutes of waiting for some acknowledgment, I simply left. What was the most frustrating is that three other people who work there noticed me sitting there and never bothered to say hello. The bar Back did however, give me a menu and a glass of water. But, I continue to wait another 5 to 7 minutes after that with no acknowledgment from the Bartender. First time visiting on a Sunday afternoon place was hopping. Was greeted and seated right away. Acoustically speaking the place is loud, music, and people enjoying the vibrations. We started with the cauliflower bites (with honey sriracha) and I wouldn't normally pay $10 for some bites of cauliflower, but my friends were raving about them and I could see why. Finally, an artisan pizza spot in Modesto! I love me a thin crust, & Churchkey does the best thin crust pie in the 209. No contest. The crust is crisp throughout, there's absolutely no sogginess. A feat that is not easy to accomplish, especially when the crust is this thin. It's golden, light, & chewy, w good bite. Apparently, crushing it over at Commonwealth wasn't enough for the owners. They decided they needed to open another first rate, casual, gourmet food joint. That is also beer focused. Aesthetically, this space is the complete opposite of its older sister. Churchkey is much larger, & much brighter. Sky high ceilings, skylights, all open. So it's uber airy. Commonwealth is great, but it's not airy. This is actually a loft space, w additional seating upstairs. And the program here is self seating w waiter service, unlike the order at the counter/food then delivered to your table system at Commonwealth. I had heard how great the pizza was, but the arancini really surprised me. Creamy, rich, full of flavor, w the appropriate crispness on the outside...outstanding. All 3 flavors are delicious, but the traditional & the Napa are my favorites. The barbecue is spicy! I understand that since this is a beer focused establishment, the wine options are very limited. Went for lunch today with five other women. To start with waitress seemed annoyed she had to wait on us. Worse $12 cold, dry, and overcooked burger I have had in a long time. Others had salads and seemed happy with them. None of us were asked if we wanted anything else to drink besides water. Water was never refilled. Nor were we checked on to see if there was anything else we wanted or needed. We were seated by 11:30 so it was not overly busy at this time. I've gone there three times. The first two times served by chill and efficient gentleman. He had glasses, he was a cool and helpful brother. Didn't have the food, but look decent. Drinks were great. The storefront is really modern and the interior was clean and hip. There's a bar in the front and an upstairs area too that I didn't get to really see. There are TVs set up all around. My coworkers and I went during lunch. We were a group of 11 and I called around 11:00 o'clock to make a reservation. They informed me that with a party that big, they needed 24 hours notice. I wish it was posted somewhere on their website that that was a rule, because I definitely would have complied. Nonetheless, they said they can make an exception just this once. I also had everyone's order ready to give over the phone in hopes that it would have helped them and us get served in a quick manner as our office was located across town and parking was a bit difficult in the downtown area. But they told me they don't do phone orders and that we'd have to order once we were there. Now whether that means you can call in a to-go order or not -- I'm not sure, but I do know I couldn't place our orders ahead of time. Let me tell you, I was excited about the bacon and egg pizza... breakfast is my favorite and this sounded almost too good to be true. And as much as I wanted to love it, the pizza seemed underwhelming. Too bland. It tasted like I got a cheese pizza with some egg in some bites. The bacon seemed almost nonexistent. I just wish there was more flavor there. A coworker got the burger with a cheese skirt and egg. He said it was delicious. And it looked delicious. The stars are for the server because he was very nice. Other than that it was all down hill from there. Came in today - Wednesday at 3pm it was dead. We were told the patio was closed, that's fine. Ordered a margarita and it was literally undrinkable, something must've gotten mixed up while making it because it was pure sour lemon lime juice but terrible. Told the server about it and he took it back and it tasted a little better but not by much. Next we ordered the tater tots with cheese and bacon and they just kinda tasted like a middle schoolers lunch.. Then I ordered just their classic cheeseburger ~ and I didn't think you could mess that one up but they did. First the bun was dry and tasted like it's been sitting out for too long, second the entire burger was cold. It was just weird dining experience. First off I love the name of this spot; each time I looked up restaurants in Modesto this one always came up. When I finally found it I was shocked as I had driven past this location a million times never knew what it was. Lots of quirky pictures on the wall with the brick, its super nice inside of here, and very clean also. One thing about this place that was quite unfortunate. I love to have a nice drink when I go to a new place. And Churchkey, they lack completely when it comes to their drinks. I tried my first drink it was gross, I didn't even get a pictures of it, and the second one was just as bad. I was offered a third one and I just declined it, they I don't know, need a bartender, or need to go back to the drawing board, their drinks totally suck here. Even my Mother's drinks were trash. Chicken wings were our appetizer, they were covered in a thick BBQ sauce that was a very interesting flavor, especially since it was cooked with bell peppers. So they were gross, and the smell of them was just too strong. I am not a bell pepper fan so when I tasted them along with the sweet BBQ flavor, I couldn't do them. They were nice in size, but that bell pepper overwhelmed it. Mom and I both ordered burgers, she had the Dwayne Rock Johnson burger just because of the name, she didn't rave about it, and it was just any old burger. I myself ordered the "Bacon & Blue" and I was waiting to be disappointed, but LORD was I NOT. This burger was amazing. I love "blue cheese" and when I saw that I was excited. I was not excited about the "bacon jam" and asked that, that be put on the side. And Lord was I happy I did only requested it on the side and not order it period. That was an acquired part of the burger, but after a few bites, I was in HOG HEAVEN. I have never heard of bacon jam in my life and I am glad I was able to learn (taste) about it. It's simply amazing on the burger, with the blue cheese, and the balsamic vinegar, it was salty, it was sweet, and it was savory, best part of the place for me was that amazing burger. This place does not have French Fries, we did inquire, and they declined said they only served Tater Tots with their burgers, may not be a big deal to some, but I prefer an actual fry with my burgers. All though I did love my burger, that goodness, it was not unfortunately enough to make me ever say I want to come here again. This place was just ughh, nothing to make me come back for again. We walked in, and were immediately greeted and seated. We ordered drinks and reviewed the menus. I ordered the Gangnam style burger, which I've ordered before, with extra Kimchi. When I had my first bite, I couldn't believe how good it was. The burger and bacon were perfect and the teriyaki sauce, jalapeños, fried egg and sauce made it a true treat. Is churchkey homophobic, racist, or classist? I was looking forward to enjoying the food and atmosphere here with my cousin for his birthday. I usually have a great time here (when I come in wearing my work clothes, long hair, and name badge). On this occasion, (in regular clothes, shaved hair, and without a name badge) we sat at the bar to no avail. We didn't receive any services, other than being served some water.
