Borderline Nachos (personal size)
Joshua B.

We visited Churchkey last week in November 2025 and as usual, it was a great experience. This place is roomy inside and is great for dates, small, medium, or large groups as well. It can be a bit noisy at times, but the atmosphere is great and also very fun. There's even a cute spot upstairs you can choose to sit in as well. I ordered the bonanza burger and wife ordered the borderline nachos. It was really good. I also ordered a blackberry bramble with whiskey. Our server was highly attentive and really kind. She made sure to go out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. All in all, I love this place and highly recommend it. They have something on the menu for everyone!

I've been telling myself I'm on a "diet" (you know, the kind where you still eat wings but balance it out with a salad so it feels healthy). I make the Fresno-to-SF trek pretty often, and somewhere around the middle of that drive, the hunger kicks in and I start scrolling through Yelp like it's DoorDash for the highway. On one of those trips, I searched "salads" and stumbled onto Churchkey. Let me tell you, I'm mad I didn't find this spot sooner. Instant midway stop. Locked in. I ordered the Cowboy Cobb for myself and some wings for my fiancé (because love is sharing food but also pretending you didn't secretly want the wings too). First bite of that Cobb? SMACK. Like, I don't know what they're putting in their salads, but it had no business being that good. Big, fresh, flavorful, and it actually felt like a meal, not just sad lettuce pretending to be dinner. And those wings? MASSIVE. Crispy like they came straight out of a food commercial. You know, the slow motion, crunch sound effect kind of crispy. The vibe inside sealed the deal for me. Spacious, chill atmosphere, definitely the type of place where you can kick back with friends or just post up with a plate of wings and pretend you're still "on a diet." The staff was super friendly too, helpful, welcoming, the kind of people that make you feel like a regular even if it's your first time walking in. Modesto isn't usually on my rotation, but now? Yeah, I'll be detouring through just to come back here. If you're on the 99 and debating another sad drive-thru meal, do yourself a favor and pull off for Churchkey. Trust me, your stomach (and your fake diet) will thank you!

We went for drinks and we weren't disappointed. They were very reasonably priced at $10 and $12. They were decent to very good drinks depending on what you ordered. We also had the Jacked up poutine tater tots as an app and it was very good. It was a large restaurant and lots of families while we were there. We sat bar top and had good customer service. Devry was one of our bartenders and he was great. We will def be back.

I've been here more times I can count but I figured I should finally write a review. Being a local, these are one of our go-to spots to take out-of-towners. The menu has something for everyone & even if there is sometimes a wait, the place is big enough that you don't have to wait too long. They have a ton of indoor seating - your choice at the bar, high seating, or a regular table. They have a good amount of outdoor seating, both at front & back of the restaurant. The back of the restaurant has super cute murals! I've always had friendly waiters/waitresses, no matter how busy it is. My go-to drink always is the Aperol Spritz - super refreshing & bonus, it looks super cute! There were two instances where two other customers asked me what I was drinking because it was so interesting to look at. Okay, okay, okay - What you came here for - THE FOODS! Coconut Curry Cauliflower Bites: MY FAVE! Super yums, so much flavor! Yum Yum Cauliflower Bites: This used to be my favorite but the last couple of times I've ordered this - it's had this burnt taste. Lemon Pepper & Spicy BBQ Cauliflower Bites: These flavors are both good. Jacked Up Poutine: Yuuuuuums, love me my fried potatoes & gravy. I always ask for the bacon on the side. Seoul Bowl: I've tried this twice & it's yums. Love the spicy sauce. You can substitute any of the burgers with an impossible burger for an extra charge. Love it! My favorite burger is the Bonanza - the house BBQ sauce is so delicious. Overall, we will definitely be back so I can get my Aperol Spritz & Cauliflower Bites fix :)

Churchkey is one of my go-to spots for downtown eateries. Tasty pints, delish cocktails, really decent pies! The pies could be a little less well-done on the bottom but that's more of a personal preference I guess. Love the variety of beers on tap--there is something for everyone! Service is always spot on; all the staff are great, attentive without hovering. This is a place you can take your time at, or stop in for a quick bite.

We ended up doubling down on the micheladas absolutely worth it

Stopped by for a couple of micheladas to wind down the night, and this spot hit the mark. While we didn't get a chance to try the food this time, the menu looked solid definitely planning to come back for a proper meal soon. The vibe is lively with spacious indoor seating and a decent sized bar. It looks like it gets pretty packed during peak hours, which makes sense given the atmosphere. Great place to grab a drink and hang out can't wait to return and check out more of what they have to offer.

Baja Bowl

Churchkey - Downtown Modesto Visited during Graffiti Week 2025 This place hits the perfect note, vibe, flavor, and service all in tune. I stopped in early during Graffiti Week and ordered the Baja Bowl with a Tall Vato Loco Lager, and... wow. The bowl was light, fresh, and layered with flavor, crisp tortilla strips, bright veggies, and just enough zest to keep you digging in. The beer was cold, smooth, and golden...paired perfectly. The interior is modern but welcoming, with a sleek bar, great lighting, and a mellow crowd. Music on the PA was on point...Johnny B. Goode, Dream Lover, Good Vibrations, setting a classic, uplifting mood for the week. Service was excellent. My server was kind, sharp, and warm...exactly the type of presence you hope for when the day is just unfolding. Big thanks to the team for holding space with style. Churchkey is a gem on 12th. I will be back. Especially when the music and the mood align like this.

We walked here after the movies in downtown Modesto. The restaurant is very spacious with booths, a big bar and many tables. The server was very knowledgeable, friendly and speedy. The food was amazing! We had burgers, pizza and they had all kinds of great beers on tap.

Piña Colada

This is by far one of the best bar/ food spots in Modesto. The food is beyond amazing, full of flavor and nice portion sizes. I have ordered a handful of items and each of them has been outstanding. Their cocktail menu is a real highlight, featuring Tiki drinks which are concocted expertly. The service is consistently great with attention to detail and friendly servers. Their prices are hard to beat with the quality you experience. This is a go to spot for date nights where we can walk away boozy, full, and under $50!

Grilled chicken sandwich I ordered mine plain

This was our first time eating here as I have been skeptical because the reviews are very mixed. I can tell you we went on Tuesday and it was around 2 pm so it was not busy and we received excellent service and we had our food out promptly. The sourdough bread they use for their chicken sandwich is so delicious, my daughter had the pepperoni pizza and that was amazing, my husband had one of their special burgers I for the name but he said it was also so good and he would like to go back to try more items. The experience was great. They gave very very good tator tots I would highly recommend trying those out.

My party was seated fairly quickly. Our waitress took all our orders by memory - we were a party of 8! I got the Chicken Marsala: Chicken, sauce, mixed veggies, mashed potatoes, and gravy. I started off with the mixed veggies - they were cooked soft, just how I like them. They were also flavorful! Not just regular ole steamed frozen veggies, they definitely were buttered and seasoned or something. Next, the mashed potatoes. I'm not a mashed potato connoisseur - matter of fact, I usually skip eating mashed potatoes when they're available. These mashed potatoes however were so flavorful! And it was not only the gravy doing all the talking, it was both the mash and the gravy. I was impressed! Lastly, the chicken Marsala. The chicken itself was cooked to perfection, moist on the inside & fully cooked - and with chicken breast, we all know how hard that is to accomplish. The sauce was incredible. I have never had any Marsala sauce as good as that. So much flavor, very savory. Altogether, the flavors worked together and worked perfectly. If only I wasn't an hour away, I would come here more often. I hope to be here again someday!

Here, you order your food, grab a number, and find your own seat for the food to be brought out to you. We sat at a table outside to decide what to order. There were no menus available so we just had to search for it online before heading inside to order. Despite being third in line from the register, we had an extremely long wait to order. There was only one person running the register who also had to make the drinks, meaning the service incredibly slow. We wanted to order the five taco platter, garlic fries, chicken Caesar salad, and mimosa pitcher. Sadly, we were only able to get the pitcher and salad. The cashier told us "sorry, we aren't doing fries right now." Not doing fries? Every plate in the vicinity had fries on them. She said that because it was brunch hour, only food on the brunch menu could be ordered. We looked at the brunch menu again and literally saw garlic fries as an option as a side for the burgers/sandwiches. No where did it specify that you can't order off the other menu and both were available online. What bothered us about this is that we placed this order at around 1:50pm, and brunch ended at 2:00pm. I understand that we are not entitled to things on the lunch menu during brunch-time for items like the tacos, but considering the menu swap was less than 10 minutes away and they were quite literally were "doing fries" at the time, it didn't make much sense to us. The only food that we ended up ordering was the Chicken Caesar Salad. This one dish took a super long time to receive. By the time it was brought out, the three of us nearly finished the Mimosa pitcher. The waitress noticed we had no silverware and said she would go grab us some. Because of how the service had been going thus far, we placed a bet on whether or not the waitress would come back with the silverware. Surprise, surprise. She didn't. We had to go inside later and search for silverware ourselves. We weren't even able to get sharing plates which was upsetting since the waitress asked us if we would be sharing the salad. The salad itself looked delicious, but was bland. The dressing was missing that zing and zest that a Caesar dressing typically has. I do appreciate that is was a chopped salad, had avocado, and seasoned croutons. It is just unfortunate that it was lacking any flavor at all. The food prices are quite affordable for the quantity of food you receive though. This experience was disappointing because I was so optimistic about the place. The menu looked good, it had fun and casual vibes and a cool crowd of people. If Commonwealth worked towards better service practices, it would have been a more positive experience.

My friend, whom I realized often fusses about the meals we share, was more critical. His comments were "Wrong bun, hamburger bun shoulda been an onion bun" and "How long does it take to make a sandwich?" (The wait time was totally reasonable to me.) He didn't like the potato salad (but ate it all with little time spared). He liked the meat in the sandwich, giving it a 5 out of 5. He liked the service less (I felt it was on point and just fine.) Pickles are just something that you have to either love Em or you hate Em. But deep fried pickles are just that sour taste that I just have to have. I have to have a sweet and a sour and pickles are just that for us. So we enjoyed them. They were just crispy enpugh on the outside with just a nice firm bite of the pickle, tender. And then that bitterness was really good. And then our main meal came, and there is enough food on that platter for two people to share. So if you're getting it for one, you better be a hearty guy like you gotta be a lumberjack guy to eat this all by yourself. Because this is like a platterful. There is like 6 ribs on that plate, 2 mouds of the pulled pork, 2 big huge scoops of macaroni n cheese and like a bag of those tater tots, then they drizzle, drizzle, drizzle, barbecue sauce. All over it, it was just like mouthwatering. When it hit the table. It smelled so good, it was just amazing. And then we just dove in a little bit, tried this a little bit of that, the ribs fell off the bone. It was so good. Now the restaurant is small and looks like it is a locals kinda spot so it is semi loud with sports and men chopping it up, but there were ladies sitting at various tables and a couple of families so it is semi family friendly if you dont mind the bar aspect that is bigger than the eating area in my opinion. We only seen one staff member on the floor and one behind the bar while we were there, but the service was quick and the ladies were attentive so it was a good experience. The decor needs an update and it had a 4 out of 5 vibe for me, but I rate food not people so I would go back for that.

I showed up around 7pm and I thought it might have been closed because no one was here. But they were open. I ordered a Bauer burger with the house seasoned fries. They asked how I'd like the egg cooked and the burger cooked: I asked for medium for both. Given how dead the place was, it did take a minute to get my food. The burger was ok, not worth $21. The bun fell apart very quickly which is a bit of a cardinal sin in the burger game. The bacon on the burger was not bacon strips but a bit of bacon crumble. The patty was a bit overcooked so it was dry and it wasn't seasoned so it was bland. The egg was cooked perfectly, but the aioli and the egg yolk with a disintegrated bun made for a huge mess. The fries were interesting. The house seasoned fries are not salted. So the fries were almost sweet due to the spices, but no salt. And they do not have regular table ketchup or malt vinegar. I did ask for some ketchup and they brought me their house ketchup. While not like a classic ketchup, it was actually quite good. Oh, be aware. They will charge you a 4% fee when they bring you the check (what would have happened if I'd paid with cash?). I do not see anywhere on the menu where they say their is a payment fee so that is a pretty shady business practice. Overall: meh.
