have been here 3 times. Last Sunday...went to see Psychic TV....came a LONG way to see them. The support band took along time to set up , and this cut into the headliner's set time. The headline band constantly complained of poor sound onstage. The doorman this night was very aggressive...manhandling me instead of asking me to move to the left. My phone slipped out of my purse and Andy was kind enough to get in touch with my sister to get it back to me. I've been to Chop Suey twice this month and both times I really enjoyed myself! One of my favorite local venues. Just big enough to fit a crowd while still being small enough to get a good view of the stage. Since re-opening there have been several improvements - most notably, the useless area of storage and occasional merch tables has now been utilized to include a fully functioning bar! The bar usually opens around 3 or 4 every day for happy hour. I like to stop by after work on Wednesdays to play Mario Kart with my friends (and the bartender if they aren't busy). In terms of a music venue, the sound has always been decent. I remember going to the occasional show back in the day where the stage was hardly lit and you could just barely see shadows of the band on stage. Fortunately that seems to no longer be the case. The staff is always nice enough, particularly for bar-venue standards. Lots of the complaints on here seem rather petty. The bartenders weren't conversational during a noisy crowded show? I wonder why. The bouncers were kind of dicks? They're bouncers - that's their job. The door person didn't hug you after stamping your hand? Probably because they were busy doing their job, and you're a douchebag. Bottom line: I'm glad Chop Suey is still around and I will keep going back again and again. read more

It's a standard club with all the attitude and hedonism one could expect. Decent sound, stiff drinks, competent staff and a lovely nude oil of Burt Reynolds. The bar area smelled like all of Saudi Arabia shoved into a foreskin. read more

I have to believe this new listing for Chop Suey is due to their brief closure and renovation with new owners. The remodeled version is much nicer! Where there was once a long wooden wall/barrier to keep the under 21 crowd is a nice long bench filled with tables and chairs. There are a handful of cool pinball machines near the front window with the photobooth machine. they've jazzed up the "lounge" area with a nicer bar and seating. The cheesy Chinese decorations have been replaced with hipstery vintage paintings and posters. I look forward to my future visits to the new Chop Suey. read more

Terrible service. Bartender was a bitch and demanded a tip before I even paid. Weak ass drinks.

For me personally, the night was a bust. I'm disabled, and while technically the venue meets ADA requirements (ramps can get you from the door to show floor) several spots are up on raised areas (including the merch stand). I was also left with a choice between pushing myself to the front of the stage, or not seeing anything at all, since there were no spots for them to accommodate a wheelchair/walker other than the very back of the floor. I ended up leaving before the first band even took stage because I couldn't see the stage at all. The late starting times were also a deal breaker for me. (Almost 2 hours from doors open to the opening act.) read more

Pretty horrible experience overall. Not sure why the bartender at a previous bar recommended this place but the service (or lack thereof) and even the band were pretty terrible tonight... Saw the bartender doing blow on my way to the bathroom which made sense considering she disappeared for 15 minutes at a time.. Anyway, not a cool Seattle experience that's for sure. Beware how you fill out the tip section on your receipt. I had the waitress modify the tip amount to give herself a $10 dollar tip on an $8 dollar tab when I hadn't left a tip for poor service. read more

I've had so much fun here for Dance Yourself Clean but they reallllllyyyy need to love their patrons better and not have angry staff and DJ who plays the same exact playlist. Treat us better and I promise to continue making this my Saturday night playground. read more

Drake Nite - reviewing while I'm sitting here waiting for your DJ to play Drake music. Is there a reason why he's playing a drake song by the hour? I've been here since 11:30 and the Drake related music is super limited and at this point. I, nor anybody else have any idea what he is playing. Glad it was only $10. I'm sure you're okay with half of your "ticket sales" disputing this charge....a. They couldn't get in. (2 lines that had no movement until more capacity cleared?....including people that bought tickets in advance?) b. As soon as they got in, the DJ played "Fight Night"....please reach out if you need some direction related to how to handle this event moving forward. Chop Suey has gotten increasingly better over the last year. More efficient and friendly security that just seem to be concerned about making sure events/nights run smoothly and patrons are safe. Bartenders are super friendly, especially during super packed and what I imagine to be pretty stressful. Props to management for listening on feedback. read more

So sorry to have to confirm all the negative comments, but they're true. I called 6 times, but no one answered. We drove into town to arrive early for one of the wonderful hamburgers they talk about. We're told doors didn't open until 7. It was 5:30. We asked if we could have something to eat and drink - no the doors open at 7. Really?? As a striving business you'd rather have us wait in the line outside than sell $1000s worth of food and alcohol??? What a crazy system - time for new management- these guys have no idea about good business and certainly nothing about customer service. I was nervous in my courageous endeavor to this capital hill weekend nightmare I've heard rumors of. Upon arrival in chop I felt what could only be described as rainbows! glitter! blinding light! embraces of warmth acceptances and unbridled love. I was drawn to the staff like nothing I've felt. It was like stumbling across the herd of majestic Griffins. Regal beasts that were imagined to be both fearsome guards of precious treasure and kingly symbols of wisdom and power. The new chop suey is one of the coolest venues/bars in the city. One of the few places in the city that features local bands. There's always something cool happening. My fav is Monday night ggnzla karaoke and kill the keg on Sunday's featuring 1$ PBR's. The new owners are very sweet people and all of the bartenders and door people are great people who live in cap hill and contribute to the neighborhood. Maximum stars!!!!!!! read more

CHANGE YOUR SIGN BACK!! I don't know if the sign change was because of "cultural appropriation" but the new signage is ugly and basic and plain and super vanilla. Sorry to say the least. Another way Seattle is rapidly losing any taste or culture. I used to come to Chop Suey cause the sign was cool but now there is nothing cool about it. Old building trying to be modern and neutral : boring!! Looks less inviting and interesting, also red is such a solid colo with that yellowish brick the blue looks TERRIBLE. A great place for dancing if you love the band/music of the night and don't mind a sweaty, over crowded, albeit probably fun, dance floor. If this isn't what you want just don't go to this bar. It has no other redeeming qualities. read more

Overall I was pleased with tonight, but the red haired door girl really put a damper on things. She treated me like a drunk teenager. I attended an event tonight with my fiancé and our couple friends for a night of throw back music. I'm going on day 8 of a cold and wanted a single beer, definitely not out to party. I mistakenly went to walk outside with said beer with my friends (I'm from Oregon where you can do this and it's not illegal) and the bright red haired gal aggressively grabbed me by the sleeve. Me fiancé and friends were already outside once I was stopped and she told me to leave my open beer in the bar I kindly asked to leave it on the shelf near her and she rudely replied "do not talk to me that way, you are disrespecting me, you cannot stand in the hallway, get back in the bar". Absolutely blew my mind. I had no idea what to say but felt the altercation was completely uncalled for. The bartenders and door man after her were very pleasant. I'm not sure what happened to her this evening but she definitely needs a chill pill. I might return, but in all honesty, I was ready to leave after that interaction. I've never felt so disrespected, especially in cap hill, where I now live and work. Not a good idea to build a bad rep with those living in the neighborhood. read more

What a tremendous dissapointment. My friends and I recently visited Chop Suey in celebration of a birthday, excited to dance at a venue on the Hill which we had not yet been. We arrived, paid the mandatory cover, and found ourselves slipping around and/or sticking to the drink laden floor. At the bar, we were ignored as the bartender laboriously and angrily served the mere 3 other people waiting, only to look up and bark "Make a line!" I opened a tab, on which I ended up paying $8 a piece for watered-down Dixie cup sized well drinks from the increasingly cantankerous keep. After about 30 minutes of having our heads rattled from the awful acoustics and amateur DJ, I collected my tab and went elsewhere. On my bank statement the next day, I found that in addition to the healthy dose of contempt we received from the bartender, he had also gouged my bill an additional $20. Moral of the story? Capitol Hill has a wonderful variety of nightlife - most with helpful, friendly staff who don't rip off your credit card and serve a decent drink at a fair price. Save your money, go somewhere else, or... be sure to pay cash when visiting Chop Suey. read more

This place has become my second home. New bar at the front of the venue is great spot to sit back and knock back some Montuckys (Montana's version of Rainier, yes there are other beers out there in the world) whilst you watch the world go by in their theater in the round windows looking onto the intersection of Madison and 14th. Sometimes you see your friends out there walking by going to an inferior place and you convince them to come join you for a drink as the bartender regales you with stories about the summer of '89. The food is cash only but well worth the ATM fee to get some. The cook loves food and if you are looking for the best sandwich on Capitol Hill look no further. Or if you're still hungover in the evening order the Captain Kangaroo and tuck into the an experience that will leave you feeling like a brand new human. read more

My buddy invited me to a show at Chop Suey, so of course I went. This place looks like a typical Seattle rock venue from the outside, kinda run down but chic as well. I didn't like having to wait out in the cold rain, but once inside things started to look up. I promptly ordered two beers at the bar from friendly bartender Kyle. Whenever I needed more drinks, he was there ready to pour. The restrooms weren't great, small and smelly but clean-ish. Way better than that shithole El Corazon.... And when the bands began to play, it wasn't too loud, so I could actually hear them. The capacity of this joint is probably between 2 or 3 hundred, which is the perfect size. And with that being said, they didn't over sell the show, leaving enough room to get around. Chop Suey, I'll be back! read more

I had a very negative experience upon my arrival to Chop Suey. I went last Friday for the tribute to Prince. I arrived when it was light out, had no alcohol in my system and there was no line. My friend came out to give me my ticket which I showed to the bouncer along with my ID. He told me to go to the other side and give to the woman at the desk. My friend grabbed my hand and pulled me in. A second later my shoulder was grabbed aggressively by the bouncer and our arms were chopped apart. This left me teary eyed for about an hour. I'm 47 with three kids and a sensible person. I have spent plenty of time in bars and clubs and never have felt violated. My behavior didn't warrant being treated aggressively. The friend that I was with contacted the club owners about what happened and got no response. I was hoping for a response, but there lack of caring and responsibility leaves me wanting others to know what happened. Poor job on Chop Sueys part on many levels. I would not recommend going there. read more
